Illinois Wesleyan University, founded in 1850, enrolls about 2,100undergraduates in the College of Liberal Arts, with 17 academicdepartments, and in the Schools of Art, Music, Nursing and Theatre

Arts. The 2004 edition of The Fiske Guide to Colleges lists the Universityas one of its 22 “best buys” among the nation’s private colleges, describ-ing Illinois Wesleyan as “at once cozy and diverse, loaded with opportu-nities for ambitious students.”

Emphasizing a distinctive liberal arts curriculum as the central fea-ture of every student’s education, IWU also provides opportunities forprofessional and pre-professional preparation. The student-faculty ratioof 12-to-1 means that the University’s students are active participants intheir education, often working individually with faculty members onresearch. As a residential university, Illinois Wesleyan provides a vibrantcampus environment in which rich co-curricular offerings complementthe primary academic mission.

About 30 percent of each graduating class goes on to graduateschool, with recent alumni accepted into law schools, medical schools,and in other advanced degree programs.New Facilities. The $25 million Ames Library (at right), a place wherebooks, journals and other materials of intellect and culture are comple-mented by exciting computer and information technology, opened in2002 and the recent $6 million renovation of the Memorial Gym hasresulted in the Hansen Student Center, a facility designed to meet thesocial, recreational, and educational needs of IWU students. IWU’sattractive and well-maintained 73-acre campus saw approximately $51million in new construction in the 1990s, including the Shirk Center forAthletics and Recreation (1994), the Center for Natural Science Learningand Research (1995), the Center for Liberal Arts (1997) as well as a resi-dence hall, accommodating 118 students in suite-like apartments (1997).The Shirk Center was funded in part by a $5 million gift from theRussell and Betty Shirk Foundation of Bloomington. The Shirk familyowns Beer Nuts, Inc.®, the Bloomington-based snack food company. Thetwo-level, 135,344-square foot complex seats 2,680 in its performancearena, and contains four multi-use courts for tennis, volleyball, basket-

ball, as well as racquetball courts, a 200-meter track, a training room andwellness center, classrooms, and other facilities. In 1999 the JackHorenberger Baseball Field was opened, which paved the way in 2000for new softball and soccer fields. The science center has 15 technologi-cally-equipped classrooms, lecture halls, and seminar rooms; 18 teachinglabs; 27 research labs; and facilities for computers. The Center for LiberalArts houses 60 faculty offices, classrooms, and facilities for social sci-ence, humanities, business and economics.Distinguished Speakers. In the past few years, IWU has hosted a num-ber of outstanding speakers, including former U.S. Defense SecretaryWilliam Cohen, authors Maya Angelou and Kurt Vonnegut, and filmdirectors Kevin Smith and Spike Lee.Accomplished Alums. RICHARD F. WILSON,

PRESIDENTRichard F. Wilson became the 18th presi-dent at Illinois Wesleyan in July 2004.

Since 1978 Wilson has served in a num-ber of roles at the University of Illinois atUrbana-Champaign, most recently (since1996) as Vice President of the U. of IllinoisFoundation. He was responsible for all pri-vate fundraising on the Urbana campus,including leading campus efforts to achieveits $1 billion goal as part of the university’scomprehensive campaign.

From 1986 to 1994, Wilson was Associate Chancellor, leadingefforts to incorporate computing technologies into instruction andproviding oversight of intercollegiate athletics. In 1994, he becameAssociate Chancellor for Development and Deputy Director of theUniversity of Illinois Foundation. Since 1981 Wilson held an adjunctteaching position in the College of Education, most recently asAdjunct Professor of Higher Education.

Wilson earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics fromAlderson-Broaddus College (W.Va.), where he earned honors inboth academics and athletics.

Wilson pursued advanced degrees at the University of Michigan,earning both the master’s and doctoral degrees in higher education.

Wilson and his wife, Pat, have two children — Adam, who lives inSan Francisco, and Rachel, who lives in Springfield, Ill.

The all-time victories leader forwomen’s basketball at Illinois Wesleyan,head coach Mia Smith will be startingher 12th season at the school in the2009-10 campaign.In her first 11 seasons, Smith hascoached the Titans to a record of 199-95(.677 winning percentage) and a 106-48College Conference of Illinois andWisconsin record (.688) and was theleague’s “Coach of the Year” in 2008 and2009. She was also the region seven

winner of the 2009 Russell Athletic/WBCA Regional Coach ofthe Year honor and was the Illinois Basketball CoachesAssociation Division III “Coach of the Year” in 2008 and 2009.In her 11 seasons she has coached 24 all-conference selections,including three league “Most Outstanding Players” (KatieCantrell, 2003; Heidi Harnisch, 2006; Christina Solari, 2009).Smith became the school’s all-time win leader with a win on Jan.20, 2007 at North Park.In 2008-09, IWU posted a 30-1 record, played for the thirdstraight year in the NCAA Division III tournament and advancedto the round of eight before being eliminated.The Titans were ranked No. 1 for nine straight weeks in both theUSA Today/ESPN poll and the D3hoops.com poll. The team was14-0 in winning the CCIW regular season title and also capturedthe league’s tournament championship. The squad set school sea-son records for wins (30), topping the mark of 26 set a yearbefore and had a school-record 30-game win streak.In 2007-08, IWU had a 26-3 record, played for the secondstraight year in the NCAA Division III tournament and enjoyednational rankings throughout the season, reaching a high of No. 5for two weeks in January (USA Today/ESPN poll). The team was13-1 in winning the CCIW regular season title and also won theleague’s tournament championship. The squad set school seasonrecords for points scored (2,467); 3-pointers made (279) and 3-pointers attempted (805); and field goals made (901). They alsohad a 16-game win streak.The 2007-08 Titans also set a pair of team game records (114points, 37 assists) in a 114-40 win over Milwaukee School ofEngineering in the Cal Lutheran Tournament Dec. 29 and, onDecember 4, IWU (with 18) and Fontbonne (with 9) combinedfor 27 3-point field goals to set a Division III record. The oldmark was 26, set by Cabrini (20) and Rosemount (6) in 1994 andequalled by McMurry (16) and Schreiner (10) in 2007.In 2006-07, IWU had a 22-6 record and played in the NCAADivision III tournament. The team set school records for 3-point-ers in a game (19 at Emory) and season (247). IWU opened witha 10-game winning streak, including a victory over eventualnational champion DePauw. IWU was ranked as high as No. 10on Feb. 6.Smith's 2005-06 team was 19-8 overall (10-4 CCIW) andadvanced to the championship game of the CCIW postseasontournament and in 2005, IWU was beaten in the CCIW final byeventual national Division III champion Milikin.In 2002-03, the Titans were 20-9 and 11-3 in the CCIW, winning

both the regular season and tournament championships (the firstin women’s basketball at IWU). The Titans also won their first-ever NCAA Division III tournament game. Smith was named the2003 IBCA Division III co-“Coach of the Year.”From 1994-98, Smith coached volleyball and softball at DivisionIII Monmouth (Illinois), where her volleyball teams were 55-69in four seasons and her softball teams were 61-54.Smith coached basketball and two other sports at CarrolltonHigh School in west central Illinois from 1986-94. Her basketballmark was 156-55 with three consecutive regional and sectionaltitles and she was twice named IBCA regional “Coach of theYear.” Her 1992 team was 28-3 and advanced to the quarterfinalsof the Class A state tournament, and her 1993 and 1994 teamslost in the super-sectional round. In volleyball, her teams were127-69 with five straight regional titles and her softball teamswere 97-54 with three regional championships.A native of Farina, Ill., and graduate of LaGrove High School,Smith earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical edu-cation from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, where shewas a four-year letterwinner in basketball and softball. She wasthe basketball team captain for three seasons and earned“Defensive Player of the Year” honors four times. She was namedto the 1983 Dial Classic all-tournament team. A Dean’s List stu-dent, she was an SIUE “Scholar-Athlete” and the school’s“Sportsmanship Award” winner in 1986.Smith also teaches classes in the IWU physical education depart-ment.

Chad Cusac is in his second season as anassistant women’s coach at Illinois Wesleyan.Cusac has served as an assistant coach for anumber of local teams and schools, includ-ing the 2005 Central Catholic girls basketballteam that finished 27-3 and won the IllinoisHigh School Association Class A regionaland sectional tournament championshipsbefore falling in the supersectional round. A1994 graduate of Culver Stockton College

(Mo.), where he played baseball, Cusac has been a firefighter inthe City of Bloomington since 1996 and is currently attained therank of fire engineer.

Tasha Gaston-Bell is in her third season asIllinois Wesleyan assistant coach. She was atwo-year letterwinner and played in all 28games, starting seven, in 2006-07, averaging5.2 points and scoring 21 points at NorthCentral. As a sophomore she played in 18games, averaging 1.3 points, and played inseven games as a freshman and averaged 5.9points. A product of Bloomington (Ill.) HighSchool, she earned four letters and was the

Purple Raiders' "MVP" as a junior and senior and was an all-areaselection as a senior.

In her second season as a Titan assistant isKatherine Menendez, a 2008 graduate andformer player at College Conference ofIllinois and Wisconsin rival North Central.A native of Geneseo, Ill., and graduate ofDarnall High School, Menendez played fourseasons of varsity basketball for theCardinals and played in 21 games as a jun-ior. In 2008 she was one of 28 women toparticipate in the WBCA "So You Want To

Be a Coach" program and was a CCIW all-academic selectionthree seasons. Menendez, whose degree is a double major inEnglish and sports management, has been a counselor at eightbasketball camps, including at the University of Illinois and theAir Force Academy.

Dennie Bridges’ association with IllinoisWesleyan began when he enrolled as a stu-dent in 1957. Bridges retired in March 2001after 36 seasons as basketball coach with acareer record of 667-319, second most all-time among NCAA Division III coaches. His1997 team was 29-2 and won the Division IIIchampionship, while his 1996 (28-3) and2001 (24-7) teams each placed third nation-ally. His teams won 17 conference champi-

onships and qualified for the Division III playoffs 14 times in 18seasons. Since Bridges became athletic director (1981), the ShirkCenter, Fort Natatorium and Jack Horenberger Baseball Fieldhave been built, as well as new facilities for soccer and softball.Bridges, who graduated in 1961 and began his IWU coachingcareer in 1964, earned letters in basketball, baseball and footballand was all-conference in basketball and football as an IWU play-er. Bridges and his wife, Rita, have three grown children, all IWUgraduates and former Titan athletes. Eldest son Steve was a four-year football letterman and was an Academic All-American.

In 2009, Christina Solari became the third Illinois Wesleyanplayer to be chosen as the College Conference of Illinois andWisconsin “Player of the Year” since league play began forwomen in 1987. She led the CCIW with 9.9 rebounds per gameand finished second in field goal percentage (.635).In 2006, Heidi Harnisch (far left) won the award as she led theleague in 3-pointers per game and 3-point percentage. She con-

nected on 77 3-pointers and averaged 14.5 points in the entire season and finished her career as IWU’s 20th all-time scorer with 845points.In 2003, Katie Cantrell (middle above) was the first Titan to earn the award as she set IWU season records with 490 points and 82 3-pointers. A first team all-CCIW and D3hoops.com all-Central region selection, Cantrell led IWU to its first-ever league champi-onship with a team-high 16.9 points per game average.

CCIW RECORDS: The Titans had two individual and two team records in CCIW play in 2008-09. StaceyArlis shot .718 from the field (51 of 71), topping the old mark of .693 (Jennifer Falbe, Millikin, 2000, 52-75); and Mallory Heydorn made 141 3-point field goals in her career, extending her own career CCIWmark. IWU’s current CCIW winning streak of 26 betters the old mark of 25 by Augustana (1990-92) andthe Titans’ winning margin of 28.6 points tops Millikin’s 1993-94 standard of 24.3.

MARGIN OF VICTORY: Illinois Wesleyan set a CCIW record with the 57-point win (109-52 overAugustana on Jan. 21). The record was 56 when Millikin downed Wheaton, 100-44, in 1989 and the IWUschool record is 78 when the Titans beat Elms, 105-27, in 2002-03…The Titans topped the 100 mark threegames this year, winning 101-53 over Fontbonne (Dec. 19) and 101-57 vs. Wheaton (Feb. 14).
