TISSUES

Page 3: tissues

What are tissues ?

The group of cells that are similar in structure and work together to achieve a particular function are called tissues.

MERISTEMATIC TISSUE

APICAL MERISTEM

INTERCALARYMERISTEM

LATERAL MERISTEM

Page 7: tissues

APICAL MERISTEM : • It is present at the growing tips of stems and roots.

• It increases the length of stems and the roots.

Page 8: tissues

Intercalary meristem:

• It is present at the bottom of leaves or internodes on twigs.

• It is helpful in the growth of stems and leaves.

Page 9: tissues

lateral meristem :

• It is also known as cambium.

• It increases the girth of stems and roots.

SIMPLE PERMANENT TISSUE

PARENCHYMA

COLLENCHYMA SCLERANCHYMA

Page 12: tissues

PARENCHYMA:• Parenchyma,  in plants, tissue typically composed of living cells that are thin-walled, unspecialized in structure, and therefore adaptable, with differentiation, to various functions.• It forms the 1. innermost layers 2.inner layers 3.outer layersof the plants.

Page 13: tissues

Collenchyma :

• Collenchyma cells have thin primary walls with some areas of secondary thickening.

• Collenchyma provides extra structural support, particularly in regions of new growth.

Page 14: tissues

SCLERENCHYMA :

• Sclerenchyma cells have thick lignified secondary walls and often die when mature. • Sclerenchyma provides the main structural support to a plant.

COMPLEX PERMANENT

TISSUEXYLEM PHLOEM

Page 16: tissues

• Xylem carry water and minerals from the roots to the leaves.

• Phloem tubes carry sugar & other organic nutrients made by plant from the leaves to the rest of the plant.

Page 19: tissues

Epithelial tissue:

• Epithelial tissue covers external surfaces and internal cavities and organs.

• Its functions are • protection• absorption• secretion

Page 20: tissues

Connective tissue:

• The cells of connective tissue are separated by non-living material.

•Connective tissue binds and supports body parts, protects, fills spaces, stores fat (for energy), and transports materials.

Page 21: tissues

Muscle tissue:

• Muscle tissue contracts in response to stimulation.

• It cannot lengthen by itself but is lengthened by the contraction of other muscles..Muscle tissue is used for locomotion, food movement in gut, and heat production.

Page 22: tissues

Nerve tissue:

• Nervous tissue responds to stimuli and transmits impulses from one body part to another.

• The outer layer-epidermis• The inner layer-Dermis• The deepest layer-Subcutaneous layer
