Directional Terms

• Superior means above or nearer to the head.

• cranial and cephalic, also mean “toward the head.”

• Inferior and caudal mean below or toward the feet.

• Anterior relates to the front of the body.

• Ventral, usually used in veterinary anatomy, pertains to the front (anterior) or undersurface of an animal.

• Posterior specifies the back or toward the back of the body.

• Dorsal, generally used in veterinary anatomy, pertains to the back (posterior) or upper surface of an animal.

• Medial means toward the midline of the body

• lateral means away from the body’s midline or toward the side.

• Proximal refers to something nearer to the body trunk or point of attachment to the body.

• Distal means further from the body trunk or point of attachment.
