CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODDLINESS

ORTHOSIS MADE UP OF POLYPROPYLENE SHEET OR PLASTIC

The orthosis should be clean properly before applying over the

patient’s limb with sponging or damp cloth, using a mild soap twice a

day.

Clean the Velcro straps properly and make them dry at a room

temperature or under the fan. Dry clean the press button/rivet /joint

part properly using a damp cotton cloth.

If the soft evathene foam is present over the orthosis, then clean it

using a soft damp cotton cloth very securely instead of washing it

under running water.

Give proper time for orthosis to dry to avoid friction over skin. Keep

your limbs clean and dry before using orthosis. Apply some talcum

powder if perspiration continues and then use orthosis.

ORTHOSIS MADE UP OF CANVAS CLOTH/LYCRA /SOFT FLEXIBLE

MATERIAL

Avoid contact of the slings with eyes/mouth or face.

Bobath cuff should be kept clean with damp cloth or wet wipes and

must dry off before using it. Under high perspiration, the use may be

avoided for some time.

Patient using any type of hemi-sling or shoulder support must kept it

clean with same process as that of bobath cuff and properly dried off.

The slings should be kept in an isolated place or must be covered up

when left unused.

The lycra material splints should be kept separately and avoided to be

in contact with other people or outside environment or away from the

reach of children.

Clean the orthosis very securely as the rough treatment may lead to

wear and tear of the orthosis material.

DONNING AND DOFFING OF THE ORTHOSIS

Clean your hands every time or use alcohol based

sanitizer while donning and doffing the orthosis to

the patient. And if the patient is himself

independent then he/she should wash hands and

the orthosis before and after wearing.

The orthosis must be kept in one hand while the

other hand positioning the limb properly and

slowly donning the splint/orthosis/slings. An

interface must be kept to avoid any kind of friction

over the skin like stockinet or cotton gloves etc.

Concern must be given over fastening the straps.

Too much tight may lead to a skin embarrassment

or in many cases callus may be formed.

While doffing, the orthosis must be slowly

removed with the limb on hold. It must be kept

separately and the limb should be checked for any

kind of redness or marks.

WEARING TIME AND EXERCISE REGIMEN

The splint/orthosis must be worn for about 6 to 8

hours daily and may be included in daily living

activities.

For the patient new to the orthosis/splints, it is

instructed to remove their splints/orthosis every 1

to 2 hour to check for areas of any skin

embarrassment after the initial application of the

splint. If the skin shows no sign of distress, the

frequency of checks may be decreased and splint

wearing time increased as needed.

Slowly and progressively the wearing time should

be increased as per guidelines given by orthotist.

The orthosis/splint must be removed and placed

separately before patient’s exercise regimen and

must be avoided to be in contact with the therapist.

The exercise regimen should be followed as per

the therapist guidance.

Wear ability of the orthosis should be checked

especially for the new patients and gadget

tolerance not be exceeded.

TROUBLESHOOTING & PRECAUTIONS

While cleaning the orthosis/splints the use of

hard bristle brushes are strictly prohibited as it

may affect the material property and its durability.

While drying the orthosis, the room temperature

or under fan is feasible instead of any direct heat

contact or under sunlight.

The gadget tolerance must not be exceeded and

interfaces such as stockinet or powder may be use

approximately.

Don’t repair or dismantle the joints or any part of

the orthosis as it may disturb the overall

alignment and further leads to difficulty. In case of

severe issues, contact must be made with the

orthotist.

Donning and doffing of the orthosis must be done

accurately as it may lead to secondary joint

malfunction and further aggravates the problems.
