Tipperary Youth Group getbehind the camera ahead of theIrish Cancer Society X-HALEYouth Awards

As part of X-HALE, the Irish Can-cer Society hosts the annual X-HALE Youth Awards which seesyouth groups from around the coun-try enter community action projectsand film projects around the issue of
smoking. Tipperary Youth Projectattended the filming workshop inpreparation of their film entries tothe X-HALE Youth Awards in thesummer to learn about film produc-ing and editing.
In total this year, 36 groups havereceived funding from the Societyand a further 15 groups have re-ceived training support. The Societyhas awarded over €123,000 to youthgroups and organisations through theX-HALE Youth Awards to createsmoking related community aware-ness projects since the initiativestarted five years ago.

The competitive call for applicationsis open to new and existing organisa-tions, groups and alliances, who col-laboratively seek to promoteentrepreneurship, create jobs, fosterinnovation and enhance export op-portunities for small business. A pre-requisite for proposals is the need todemonstrate innovative solutions tofostering and creating employment.Priority will be given to new ap-proaches that build on, and strength-en, the entrepreneurial ecosystemthroughout the country.Through the utilisation of existinginfrastructure and the leveraging ofnationally available enterprise sup-
ports, the specific objectives of thescheme include:
· Fostering an increased collabo-rative, networked and linked ap-proach to regional and localenterprise development and job crea-tion· Establishment of hubs, acceler-ators, networks and clusters or otherpartnerships based on regionalstrengths, opportunities and unique-ness. Within this is the establishmentof partnership activities where inno-vative start-ups can be established ina supportive network before graduat-ing to other support mechanisms orself-sufficiency
· Proactively seeking out, en-couraging and supporting applica-tions from economicallydisadvantaged areas and areas facingpotential economic shock to fosterpotential opportunities for job crea-tion and supporting enterprise

This year's Long Way To Tipperary Festivaltakes place on Friday 17th and Saturday18th July 2015. Borrisoleigh Festival is back againthis year at the earlier dates of July24th, 25th and 26th.. There is a greatline up of events planned for theweekend with live music in TheSquare each night. On Friday night 4piece band Acoustra will take to thestage. On Saturday a variety concertwith local talent starts at 7.30pm. Af-terwards you can get your Salsa onwith the Latin fusion sounds of OchyCalderon. Sunday has social dancingin The Square with The Castle Triofollowed by local legends Ebony.
There are a host of activities andevents planned for the weekend.Mack’s Funfair will be in attendanceall weekend (swingboats anyone?).The Tomas Max Camogie Tourna-
ment takes place on Friday evening.On Saturday there is a line dancingexhibition and class in the Squarealong with walks on the Devils Bitand Latteragh woods, historical walk-ing tour of Borrisoleigh and a foodand craft fair in the Square and churnracing later in the evening. On Sun-day there is a Family Fun Day withsomething for everyone, Strong ManDisplay, Sheaf Tossing, Bubble Soc-cer, Vintage Cars, games of skill,plus lots lots more. It may be Mid Summers Day, but inmany people’s eyes the summer willonly be beginning as Eamon O’Sheaand his team of Mick Ryan, PaudieO’Neill and Declan Fanning showtheir hand in the ring and hope that theplans in place are enough to deliver aknockout blow to the Treaty men’saspiration of reaching the provincialdecider on July 14th, even a standingcount will do.
Though nine weeks since the side lastsaw competitive action, last year’s en-counter against Limerick at the samestage will probably bear greater signif-icance by the time Sunday weekcomes round.

The Tipperary Intermediate hurlersline out against Limerick at 2pm in theGaelic Grounds, also on Sunday 21st,before the senior clash. Board isdelighted to report that the member-ship held up over the 16,000 as onceagain the clubs responded positively tothe improved commission rates andthe very attractive prize fund. Thanksto all our club co-ordinators and pro-moters for their great efforts over thelast few weeks.

I believe that having meaning in our life isfundamental to our happiness. Even at ourmost hopeless and helpless, we can findmeaning. I also believe that having meaningis a good antidote to anxiety. When he wasin a concentration camp the greatpsychiatrist, Viktor Frankl, survivedbecause he found meaning, even thoughmost of his close relatives perished underthe Nazi regime. He married in 1942, but inSeptember of that year, Viktor, his wife,parents, and brother, were all arrested, andinterned at Theresienstadt in Bohemia. Hisfather starved to death there. His motherand brother were killed at Auschwitz in1944. His wife died at Bergen-Belsen in1945. Only his sister Stella survivedbecause she had emigrated to Australia ashort while earlier. Yet he found meaning inlife. His wife had died, but she lived in him.We can be free in our minds irrespective ofour suffering and our circumstances.
Existential means experiential or dealingwith existence especially human existence.Therefore, existential anxiety, which iswidespread, is about failing to face some ofthe many life crises that all of us inevitablyexperience. And what are these crises? Forsome it might be a powerful fear ofgrowing old, for others an associated fearof death. Death arouses the ultimateexistential fear. We may be paralysed atthe idea of loss, and all of us suffer loss.We are all the children of someone, and ourparents die. Of all the anxieties, thisfundamental one can evoke a very positiveand inherent response by us as humanbeings. In other words, this type ofanxiety, painful though it is, is part of lifefor all of us. Putting it another way, if weare anxious about death, we may be moreinclined to explore life in a fuller way.However, if our fear of death isdebilitating, then the anxiety has becomeneurotic. Its roots do not lie inexistentialism, but is some other area, suchas childhood difficulties or other trauma.
There are many other life crises that wemay fear, for example, we may have to facegreat loneliness, we may struggle informing a relationship, we may haveproblems in our relationships, we may fearpain and illness, we may have a fear ofresponsibility, and so on. These are allexistential crises. Existential counsellingemphasises personal freedom andresponsibility. It is about choices.Existential anxiety leads to emptiness,loneliness, and guilt. Its roots lie in fourfears – fear of death, fear of creating guilt,fear of having a meaningless life, and fearof isolation. This might include fear ofspiritual emptiness. During the lamentablymaterialistic ethos and greed of the CelticTiger years, I imagine there was asignificant amount of spiritual emptiness.We are spiritual beings (I do not mean
religious beings as such), and spiritualemptiness is a painful experience.Spiritually means awareness of somethinghigher, a higher power. This may be God tomillions of people, but it can also mean asense of connectedness to the universe, oran awareness of the beauty of nature. If youlike poetry you might like to read some ofWilliam Wordsworth’s poetry, whichexplores the spirit and the beauty of nature.Spirituality is something that brings yououtside of yourself, where you get lost, forexample, in the loveliness of nature, or thestrangeness of a misty morning. I think thatWordsworth saw nature as a higher powerthat brought him peace and consolation.You may not have fully understood hispoetry when you were at school, butconsider the lines that nature is ‘a motionand a spirit that impels all thinking things,all objects of all thoughts and flowsthrough all things’. This is how heexpressed the calmness he got from hismemory of nature
But oft, in lonely rooms, and 'mid the dinOf towns and cities, I have owed to themIn hours of weariness, sensations sweet,Felt in the blood, and felt along the heart;And passing even into my purer mind,With tranquil restoration: —
What a lovely line - ‘tranquil restoration’.The very opposite to a state of anxiety. Welive in a rushed world that is getting smallerand smaller. We are inundated with badnews from every corner of the globe. Allinstantly transmitted into our living rooms.Perhaps, poetry is a creative way to dealwith existential anxiety. When my child waskilled in 1990, I wrote some poetry that stillgives me consolation. We all have the gift ofwriting poetry.
