JokesA lady goes into the butcher shopand as she is walking around thestore, she spies a beef tongue in thebutcher's counter. The lady asks,"What in the world is that?""Beef tongue," replies the butcher! The lady gives a little involuntaryshudder, "No way would I put any-thing in my mouth that came out ofan animal's mouth!"The butcher nods sympatheticallywhile peeking into the woman'sshopping cart, "I see you're buying adozen eggs!"
Whether a man winds up with a nestegg, or a goose egg, depends a lot onthe kind of chick he marries.
Playing golf with his buddies, mygrandfather had to make a slick 25-foot putt. As he lined it up, he an-nounced, "I have a €5 that says I canmake this putt. Does anyone want tobet?"His three friends eagerly agreed tothe wager. My grandfather missedthe putt by ten feet, and his friendsgathered around to collect their mon-ey. Granddad pulled out a €5 note onwhich he had written, "I can makethis putt."His pals are still trying to collect onthe bet and granddad is too.
I have to exercise early in the morn-ing before my brain figures out whatI'm doing.
A man asked his wife what she'd likefor her birthday. "I'd really love to beten again" she replied wistfully. On the morning of her birthday, hearose early, got up, made her a nicebig bowl of Frosties and then tookher off to their local theme park. What a day! He put her on every ridein the park: the Death Slide, the Wallof Fear, the Screaming Monster Roll-er Coaster, everything there was.Five hours later she staggered out ofthe theme park. Her head was reelingand her stomach felt upside down.Right away, they journeyed to a Mc-Donald's where her loving husbandordered her a Happy Meal with extrafries and a refreshing chocolateshake. Then it was off to the cinema to seethe latest blockbuster, complete witha hot-dog, popcorn, a big fizzy drink, and a huge bag of M&M's, her fa-vourite sweets. What a time she had! Finally she wobbled home with herhusband and collapsed into bed ex-hausted. He leaned over his preciouswife with a big smile and lovingly
asked, "Well, Darling, what was itlike being ten again?"Her eyes slowly opened and her ex-pression suddenly changed."Oh dear", she replied. "I meant mydress size..."And the moral of the story:Even when a man is listening, he'sstill going to get it wrong.
An 85 year old couple, having beenmarried almost 60 years, had died ina car crash. They had been in goodhealth the last ten years mainly dueto her interest in health food and ex-ercise.When they reached the pearly gates,St. Peter took them to their mansionwhich was decked out with a beauti-ful kitchen and master bath suite andJacuzzi. As they "oohed and aahed" the oldman asked St. Peter how much allthis was going to cost."It's free," St. Peter replied, "this isHeaven."Next they went out back to surveythe championship golf course thatthe home backed up to. They wouldhave golfing privileges everyday andeach week the course changed to anew one representing the greatestgolf courses on earth.
The old man asked, "What are thegreen fees?"St. Peter's reply, "This is heaven, youplay for free."Next they went to the club house andsaw the lavish buffet lunch with thecuisines of the world laid out."How much does it cost to eat?"asked the old man."Don't you understand yet? This isheaven, it's free!" St. Peter repliedwith some exasperation."Well, where are the low fat and lowcholesterol tables?" the old manasked timidly.St. Peter lectured, "That's the bestpart. You can eat as much as you likeof whatever you like and you neverget fat and you never get sick. This isHeaven."With that the old man went into a fitof anger, throwing down his hat andstomping on it, shrieking wildly.St. Peter and the old man's wife bothtried to calm him down, asking himwhat was wrong. The old manlooked at his wife and said, "It's allyour fault! It's all your fault!"His wife said, "My fault? What areyou talking about?"He yelled, "If it weren't for yourblasted bran muffins, I could havebeen here ten years ago!"

The Stitching Room in Nenagh, which has recently opened it’s doors,is a fully equipped dedicated craftlearning room in the town centre thatwill deliver knitting, sewing, crochet, card craft and flower craft. The roomis also available to groups to havetheir own craft classes or meetings.
Knitting, sewing and crochet areskills that were passed down fromone generation to another in families. Each lovingly making practical gar-ments, creative gifts and family heir-looms. These skills however seem tohave missed a generation and maysoon be lost to many of us.
The Stitching Room hopes to addressthis issue. It is a dedicated craft train-ing room in Nenagh town centre. Theroom has all the resources and equip-ment you need to learn to knit, sew, crochet or quilt. There are scheduledclasses morning and evening to suitall abilities or any group can book theroom for one or more sessions.
Coming up to Christmas classes areavailable in making patchwork tablemats, fabric/felt wreaths and seasonalflower arrangements. The little onesare not forgotten either and can joinin a card making class, a sewing classor a knitting class. The tutors are ex-perienced and patient and haveworked in the Irish craft industry andalso in formal education.
With many of us becoming more fru-gal it is important that we can patch aknee, sew a hem or knit a winter hat.And it is even more important that wepass these skills on to the next gener-ation. Sewing and knitting are me-thodical and can be very relaxing, andyou get something practical whenyou are finished.
The classes are the ideal way to learnnew practical skills this winter andmeet new people. All classes includetea, cake and chat.www.facebook.com/[email protected] 8844210

Cappuccino Cream Chocolate CakeRecipe by Neven MaguireServes 10–12
- 750g (1¾lb) mascarpone cheese, well chilled- 200g (7oz) icing sugar, sifted- 1 vanilla pod, split in half and seedsscraped out- 450ml (¾ pint) cream, well chilled- 200ml (7fl oz) freshly brewedstrong espresso coffee, left to cool- 100ml (3½fl oz) Coole Swan Irishcream liqueur- 2 x 380g (13oz) chocolate loafcakes (shop-bought or homemade)- 2 tsp good-quality cocoa powder- 10–12 chocolate-coveredcoffee beans, to decorate
This might look like a very impressive cake that took ages to make, butit’s really only an assembly job. Mascarpone is a rich, creamy cheesefrom Lodi in the Lombardy region of Italy. It has a sweetened taste andis famously used in classic tiramisu, which is the basis of this dessert. However, I’ve used shop-bought chocolate loaf cakes instead of thetraditional sponge fingers.
Using an electric whisk, mix the mascarpone cheese, icing sugar andvanilla seeds until well combined.
Whip 375ml (13fl oz) of the cream until soft peaks form and then fold intothe mascarpone mixture.
Pour the coffee into a shallow dish and stir in the Coole Swan.
Slice the chocolate loaves.Line the base and sides of a 23cm (9in) springform cake tin with parchmentpaper and wrap the outside in clingfilm to avoid any leaks.
Dip 8 of the chocolate cake slices in the Coole Swan mixture to cover thebottom of the tin. It’s important to only dip them as you go along so thatthey are not soaking for long, which would make them difficult to handle.
Cover the layer of soaked chocolate cake with one-third of the mascarponecream and then arrange another even layer of the soaked cake slices on top.
Continue layering in this way, finishing with a mascarpone layer, and placein the fridge to chill for 10–15 minutes.
Meanwhile, whip the rest of the cream in a clean bowl and transfer to a pip-ing bag fitted with a star-shaped nozzle.
When ready to serve, carefully remove from the cake tin and transfer to acake stand.Give the cake an even dusting of the cocoa powder, then pipe 10–12 peaksof cream around the edge of the cake and top each one with a chocolate-cov-ered coffee bean.
Place in the middle of the table so that everyone can help themselves.
The spicing in this korma is abso-lutely authentic, so it won’t resemblethe formula restaurant version. Ap-parently it is traditionally the emper-or’s favourite and it’s now one ofmine too. In India it would be gar-nished with fresh rose petals, but forme it needs nothing more than ascattering of fresh coriander leaves.
Serves 42 tbsp rapeseed oil2 onions, finely chopped2 garlic cloves, crushed1 green chilli, seeded and finelychopped (optional)2 tsp finely grated root ginger1 tsp garam masala1 tsp ground turmeric¼ tsp chilli powder400g (14oz) canchopped tomatoes2 tbsp mango chutney, plus extrato serve1 tsp tomato purée400g (14oz) can coconut milk4 x 175g (6oz) boneless, skinlesschicken breasts, cut into 2.5cm(1in) cubessea salt and freshly ground blackpeppersteamed basmati rice, to servehandful of fresh coriander leaves,to garnishwarmed naan bread or green chilliand coriander flatbreads
Heat the oil in a large pan over a me-dium-high heat and fry theonions and garlic for 6–8 minutes, until golden brown. Stir in the
greenchilli, ifusing,and thegingerand cookfor 1minute,stirring.
Add the garam masala to the panwith the turmeric, chilli powderand a pinch of salt and cook for an-other minute, stirring.
Add the tomatoes, chutney, tomatopurée and 4 tablespoons of water.Stir well to combine, then bring to afast simmer for 5 minutes, untilthe sauce is so well reduced that it isalmost sticking to the bottomof the pan, stirring occasionally.
Stir the coconut milk into the panand then stir in the chicken.
Slowly bring to the boil, then reducethe heat and simmer gentlyfor 10–15 minutes, until the chickenis cooked through andcompletely tender. Season to taste.
To serve, arrange the basmati riceand chicken korma on warmedplates and scatter over the corianderleaves to garnish. Place thenaan or green chilli and corianderflatbreads in a separate dish topass around at the table along withthe mango chutney.

Pemberley Productions & The LimeTree Theatre presentIn Acting Shakespeare
In Acting Shakespeare is a superblyengaging one-man show, arrivingon tour in Ireland this October fol-lowing a two-month sold out runoff-Broadway in New York City.
It is a funny, touching and upliftingstory of one man’s discovery ofShakespeare, acting and language.Freely adapted, with permission, from Sir Ian McKellen’s ‘ActingShakespeare’, the wonderfully tal-ented James De Vita tells his ownstory of a young fisherman search-ing for a new career. This fun, fer-vent tribute to one man’s personaljourney, deftly weaves some ofShakespeare’s most famous mono-logues with James’ days as a LongIsland fisherman and his nights as aclassical actor.
A native of Long Island, NY, Jamesis an author, actor and companymember at American Players Thea-tre and lives in Wisconsin. He hastoured the United States with "InActing Shakespeare” culminating in
a two month off-Broadway run atthe Pearl Theatre on 42nd Street. Arecipient of the National Endow-ment for the Arts Literature Fellow-ship for Fiction, Jim has had twonovels published, The Silenced andBlue (HarperCollins), and is also awidely published playwright, writ-ing for both adults and young audi-ences. This play is a must see foranyone interested in Shakespeare ortheatre. Full details and ticket infor-mation atwww.shakespeareireland.com

Minister for the Environment, Commu-nity and Local Government Mr. AlanKelly TD has launched a brand newwebsite dedicated exclusively to thepromotion of the Lakelands LoughDerg region.
www.discoverloughderg.ie providesvisitors to the region with informationon places to visit, events, accommoda-tion providers and restaurants, specialoffers, and land and water based activi-ties.
The website is one of a number of mar-keting initiatives being rolled out overthe coming months and during 2015 toestablish the Lough Derg area in coun-ties Clare, Galway and Tipperary as Ire-land's premier lakeland destination.
“Lough Derg is the most importanttourism asset in this region, and the lakehas the capacity and the potential to en-tice and host domestic and internationalvisitors alike," stated Minister Kelly atthe launch ofwww.discoverloughderg.ie.
The Minister added: “We need to con-tinue to work on increasing the demandfor lakeside and leisure activities andattract tourists into the LakelandsLough Derg Region. An online pres-ence is just one activity to assist us indoing this”.
Minister Kelly confirmed that a€2million stimulus package is beinginvested to progress the objectives ofthe “Roadmap for Experience Develop-ment and Destination Marketing Plan2014-2017” for Lough Derg, which waslaunched earlier this year.
Implementation of the Plan is being co-ordinated by the Lough Derg MarketingGroup (LDMG), comprising Fáilte Ire-land, Waterways Ireland, Inland Fisher-ies, Clare, Galway and TipperaryCounty Councils, LEADER and tour-ism trade representatives from the pri-vate sector.
In addition to the website, the LDMGhas coordinated a promotional video forthe Lakelands Lough Derg Region, which is available to view on the newlylaunched website and which local tour-ism businesses are encouraged to incor-porate into their websites. LakelandsLough Derg will also be promoted onwebsites across France and Germanylater this year, while a domestic market-ing campaign is planned for the nationalprint and broadcast media in early 2015.
Joe MacGrath, LDMG Chairperson andChief Executive of Tipperary CountyCouncil commented: "One of the keyobjectives outlined in the Roadmap is toimprove orientation around Lough Dergfor visitors. This will be achieved byerecting new signage to create a senseof arrival and enhance the visitor expe-rience in exploring the area. It will fo-cus on the three counties of Clare,Tipperary and Galway that border thelake with signage from motorways tothe regional and local roads included inthe scheme. Work is progressing in re-lation to this project and new signage isexpected to be put in place in 2015”.
“The marketing and promotion ofLough Derg is an ongoing process,"explained Áine Mc Carthy, TourismMarketing Coordinator for Lough Derg, who added: "For example, the LoughDerg Marketing Group launched a pilotfood tourism initiative, A Taste ofLough Derg 2014, in June of this yearwhich became an instant success gener-ating public attention on social mediathrough a series of events organised bythe tourism trade in July and August. The initiative, which continues thismonth has created a significant interestin local produce available aroundLough Derg and has heightened aware-ness of Lough Derg as a food tourismdestination”.
"The initiative will be extended nextyear to get more of the tourism tradeinvolved, with more events taking placethroughout the summer months offeringvisitors to Lough Derg a choice of foodevents to attend," added Ms. Mc Carthy.
Meanwhile, the LDMG has been in-volved in an EU Project called TRAP(Territories of Rivers Action Plans)since March which involves improvingstakeholder engagement around LoughDerg.
Businesses wishing to be added towww.discoverloughderg.ie or to havetheir details updated should send anemail to [email protected].

Many of you reading this articlewill remember being sent to thelocal “tech” after your Inter Certor Leaving Cert to do this coursein order to get a job in a localoffice. Those of you who weregood at the exams may havesucceeded in getting placed onthe panel for the health board, county council or civil service.
Do you still remember “fingerson the home keys”, return thecarriage sharply, feet flat on thefloor. The drills associated withtyping and no corrections exceptwith the awful correction paper.Flying capitals and half spaces –the stuff of nightmares! At leastan hour every day and then an-other hour or two on GreggShorthand. Learning a new lan-guage. Taking dictation at aminimum of 80 wpm but reallystriving for 120 to 140 wpm.The notebook that was ruleddown the middle so you didn’thave to waste time going backacross a wider page. However, that was the easy part - the ma-jor difficulty was writing back inperfect English what you hadwritten in shorthand. Basicbookkeeping and office proce-dures were the other subjectsthat were studied as part of thiscourse

Anxiety (continued from previous issue)
(Continued in next issue)
Anxiety. Sleeplessness (contd.).
It is possible to deal effectively withinsomnia. But, it does require efforton our part. If it is caused by stress,it is important to reduce the stressor, whether it is work, home, or personalproblems. Remember that stresskeeps us alert and anxious, the veryopposite of restfulness and peace.Dealing with stress is looked at in thecontext of the different types ofanxiety, and more particularly at theend of these articles. Negativethoughts create anxiety andcontribute to sleeplessness. Dealingeffectively with such thoughts willhelp reduce insomnia. I find that if Ihave a job to do, I can spend hours inbed mulling over how I will do it. Insuch cases, I have to get up, make teaand have a slice of toast. I find thisvery effective. It is not helpful toremain in bed while your thoughts areracing. I also find that on the fewoccasions when my feet burn, I mustget up and run them under the coldtap in the bath. It is easy to warm coldfeet, but much more difficult to coolburning feet, which are a commoncomplaint. Having burning feet isknown as restless leg syndrome, andgenerally comes on in the evening. Iam not sure if there is a connectionbetween burning feet (and hands) andanxiety. I am told that drinking plentyof water during the day can help toeliminate burning feet.
Keeping a sleep diary is an excellentway of tackling insomnia. This takescommitment and perseverance. Aswith any diary it notes times anddetails. Therefore note the time yougo to bed, how long you think ittakes to fall asleep, the number oftimes you wake up during the nightand at what times, how many napsyou take during the day, the times ofyour meals, the amount of alcoholtaken, how much exercise you havetaken and any stressful events thathave occurred during the day.Dealing with negative thoughts andkeeping a diary would be part of aCognitive Behavioural Therapyapproach to dealing with insomnia, and would probably be used in sleepclinics. Your GP may refer you toone of these. Many of the majorhospitals in Ireland have sleep clinics
with experts who may be able to helpyou. You can check these out under‘sleep clinics’ in the internet.
There are other helpful behavioursthat we can do to alleviate insomnia.Avoiding caffeine later in theevening is helpful. I have alreadylooked at caffeine in the context ofanxiety and panic, so there is adouble connection there betweeninsomnia and anxiety. Interestingly,in the context of insomnia, caffeinedoes not affect every person in thesame way. For some people it has noimpact on how they sleep, while forothers a cup of coffee in the morningmay affect their quality of sleepmany hours later.
It seems that an adequate supply ofthe neurotransmitter serotonin mayhelp you to sleep better. Serotoninhelps regulate our moods, and itcontributes to our feelings of well-being. Neurotransmitters are thechemicals, which allow thetransmission of signals from oneneuron to the next across synapses (asynapse is a junction between twonerve cells). Neurotransmitters areproduced by some glands such as thepituitary and the adrenal glands.Health shops will have supplementscontaining serotonin and melatonin(melatonin is a hormone that helpsregulate sleep).
