President’s Message……… What a great start to another genealogy season. Welcome to our new members!

As I write this, several events are happening prior to our November meeting. Gloria Weth is on a 7- day genealogy cruise. Sally Thomas and I are going to attend the Florida State Genealogical Society conference on Nov 10 & 11 in Melbourne. We plan to share information from the cruise and conference at the November meeting.

At the October meeting about charts and forms, there was discussion by members about family heirlooms and artifacts. If you have an heirloom or artifacts to share, please bring it to the Open Forum meeting in January.

As I was looking through some of my paper work, I discovered I had information on getting our children/grandchildren interested in genealogy. I will go back to the website to make sure there is still access to the articles. The information will be available as a handout at future meetings.

The agenda for the November 15th meeting will include voting [paper ballots], on the revised By-Laws and the election of Officers and Directors. All members are receiving a copy of the By-Laws at the meetings.

Our December 13th meeting will be the installation of Officers and Directors and our Holiday Party at Elsie Quirk Library. As always, everyone looks forward to this yummy event including family tradition goodies, chip & dips and sweets. EGSF provides the plates, silverware, napkins and drinks.

Happy Researching! Sue

Take note of the years statewide vital record- keeping officially began in each US state—that’s when counties started to collect birth, marriage and death information and report it to state offices. Some counties or towns kept stats earlier, and some were slow to comply with state laws, so check with your ancestors’ local government for record availability. *Delaware’s statewide birth and death records stop in 1863 and resume in 1881. All Louisiana birth records are kept in parish clerk offices. Tennessee has no statewide birth or death records for 1913. Birth Marriage Death Birth Marriage Death

Roots Television is Online Roots Television is now available. However, this isn't a traditional television channel.

Roots Television is a web site at http://www.RootsTelevision.com that features videos. In fact, in many ways, this is better than a television station: it is available at any time you wish to view it, 24 hours a day.

Roots Television is by and for genealogists and family history lovers everywhere. The channel promises to appeal to archives hounds, scrap-bookers, cousin collectors, roots-travel enthusiasts, Civil War re-enactors, those interested in DNA, reunion planners, history buffs, story-tellers, flea market and antiques fanatics, nostalgia nuts, and many more.

The episodes already online include the following: In Search of Annie Moore, a press conference Heir Jordan, Extreme Genealogy The Cooling Board - an article about embalming Psychic Roots, a five part series Ancestors, Season Two, in six episodes

The web site also has video blogs, text blogs, and an online store that sells books, videos, and more. Roots Television looks good. I suspect this will be a successful "TV channel." You can find Roots Television at http://www.RootsTelevision.com.

Tips from the Pros: Audit Your Sources from Julianna Smith

When we're up against one of those brick walls that just won't budge, we're often advised to review the information we've gathered. This is good advice, but it works better if we also review our sources. Play devil's advocate and examine the possibility that one or more of the sources could contain incor-rect information that has been misleading you.

Typically sources created nearer the actual event, and/or by an actual witness to the event are more likely to be correct. If you find you've missed recording a source for an event or fact, try to recreate your research and locate the source of the information. Taken in small steps, you may find that this "audit" of the sources you've used may provide you with a door in that brick wall.

Library and Archives Canada (LAC) is pleased to announce the launch of

"Traces of the Past", a new component of the virtual exhibition

"Moving Here, Staying Here: the Canadian Immigrant Experience".

You are invited to visit the site at: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/immigrants.

Funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage through its Canadian Culture Online initiative, the site uses documents held at LAC to tell the exciting story of immigration to Canada from the early 19th century to the outbreak of the Second World War. As well as learning first hand the trials of immigration through narratives enhanced by manuscripts, publications and visual material, you are encouraged to find your own family's history through the databases of digitized documents ... such as passenger lists and muster rolls ... that are provided. In collaboration with the Canadian Genealogy Centre, LAC is pleased to offer the following research tools, all of which include digitized images of documents:

Passenger Lists: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/passenger/index-e.html

Passenger lists (RG 76) were the official immigration documents from 1865 to 1935. The lists contain information such as the name, age, country of origin, occupation and destination of each passenger. The lists are organized by port and date of arrival. This database provides access to passenger lists for the ports of Quebec (1865-1921); Halifax (1881-1912, and soon to 1922); Saint John (1900-1912); North Sydney (1906-1908); Vancouver (1905-1912); and Victoria (1905 to 1912 shortly).

The Ward Chipman Papers: http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/ward-chipman/index-e.html

Ward Chipman the Elder (1754-1824), a Massachusetts lawyer, was also an army administrator in the State of New York between 1777 and 1783. In 1784, he settled in New Brunswick where he served as solicitor general until 1808. The Ward Chipman Papers contain muster rolls of Loyalists, and their families, who were members of demobilized regiments and who settled in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. This research tool provides access to nearly 19,000 references to Loyalist families.

The Likacheff-Ragosine-Mathers Collection (LI-RA-MA) http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/li-ra-ma/index-e.html

The Likacheff-Ragosine-Mathers collection (LI-RA-MA) contains documents created between 1898 and 1922 by the Canadian consular offices of the Tsarist Russian Empire. The series on passports and identity papers (many with photos) contains approximately 11,400 files on Jewish, Ukrainian and Finnish immigrants who came to Canada from the Russian Empire. Also included are passport applications and questionnaires containing general information. Nearly half the database is now available online, with the rest to be added soon.

Family History Can Keep Your Brain Healthy

Family History Circle I was browsing around CNN and found an article from a couple months ago that caught my attention. Titled Keeping

Your Brain Healthy, it gave several tips from the Alzheimer’s Association that really brightened my day. Exercise Your Brain The first set of tips was geared around keeping your mind active by staying “curious and involved” and continuing to learn. We do that! Curious is one of the first words that pops into my head when I ask myself why I’m involved in family history, and Lord knows we have to continue to learn as we go through the process of researching our family. We have to learn geography, history (and not just the overviews from those school history books–we need to get in-depth!), paleography (study of old writing and inscriptions), how to use technology, math (If great-grandpa died Sept. 19, 1954 at age 80 years, 6 months, and 4 days, when was his birthday?), library science, preservation techniques, genetics, and so much more. The article also mentioned reading and writing. Yep, we have to do that too. “Attend lectures and plays, or take courses at local colleges or community centers.” Check! Conferences and local genealogy classes take care of this category too. Be Social The next section focused on being socially active. When we attend society meetings, conferences, or even communicate online via mailing lists, chats and other forums, we’re being socially active. Another tip was to travel, so now you can plan that dream research trip for health reasons.

Exercise Getting exercise was also cited as a way to keep your brain healthy. Those strolls around a cemetery looking for that elusive headstone, or the dash to get to the library before it closes? Yes, they count too. Diet While the almonds, walnuts, and pecans cited in the article make a good snack on a research outing, I don’t think we’ll be seeing any halibut or mackeral in the vending machines at the Family History Library. We’ll just have to make sure to plan a nice healthy dinner with our genealogy buddies every so often. To Sum Up… So the next time someone gives you a hard time because “you’re always doing genealogy,” you just tell them you’re

working out! *Hosted by Ancestry.com, 24/7 Family History Circle, is a destination for anyone with an interest in family history–be it a passing interest or a raging passion. Long-time Ancestry.com newsletter editor, Julianna Smith, will be writing for the blog, and will include articles from family history columnists, George G. Morgan, Michael Neill, Megan Smolenyak, Maureen Taylor, Paula Warren, and Sherry Irvine, as well as the occasional guest columnist.

The Ancestry Weekly Journal is posted weekly on this blog, along with some unique content. At 24/7 Family History

Circle, you’ll find helpful tips (from readers and from our regular columnists), how-to articles, research stories, and whatever else Juliana thinks might be of interest.

Interesting information about Ancestry. Submitted by Sharon Ingleton..

I got this from "My family" News from the class I took on "Scotland". Might be a help to

someone.

I have used Ancestry for years as most of our family arrived in the USA from the mid 1700s to mid 1880s [except the Scot who was the late arriver and the last to get here] Things had gone well for me on the site until I began to search the census records for one odd spelt surname. I was so pleased when I finally figured out that Erek often turned into Eck in the census index. However total frustration set in when the links did not work. I knew all the names of the six members of the family and every one took me to a wrong page. I could find no telephone number to report the problem and posting messages on that site often causes more frustration. After half an hour or so, I found the attached link on the site. You actually can speak to a live person - as on IM. I signed in and within seconds some one was there. I explained my problem and they will look up my folks and email me the images. [or at least the proper links] They promised to provide a special email address to which I am to send all the problems. That message with the email had already arrived. So if you are having problems, give it a try. You will find the "Live help" about mid way down the page.

Catherine PS - Update - within 45 minutes they emailed three images to me. Two were the right ones and now they are looking again for the third one - although the one they sent had the correct name, it was not the right person. .... and now twenty minutes later - I have the correct third person I needed. I have never seen such fast service. 3/29/06 Catherine Murray

Ancestry.com Launches New Family Tree Building Tools September 06, 2006

The following is a press release written by MyFamily.com, the parent company of Ancestry.com: Ancestry.com Launches New Family Tree Building Tools With Powerful Search, Save and Share Features PROVO, Utah, Sept. 6 -- Ancestry.com, the world's largest online family history source, today announced it has significantly enhanced its website's search, save and share features, creating a more personalized, collaborative, family history research and social networking experience. The revamped site provides more advanced tools to utilize the wealth of digital content available on Ancestry.com, including its more than 23,000 databases with 5 billion searchable names, which includes the recently added digitized and indexed U.S. Federal Census collection from 1790 to 1930. With these enhancements, users can now build, organize and share their family stories through a variety of interwoven features such as Person Pages that provide a detailed snapshot of a family member's life events, fully indexed Member Trees, and One-WorldTree(SM), the world's largest family tree, which includes data from a collection of more than 500,000 user-submitted trees. Along with these newly added features, Ancestry.com has bolstered its free services offering, allowing users to create a family tree online, upload family photos, create life timelines and share trees with family members. In addition, users who are invited to view a family tree have full access to the family history records and photos attached to names listed on the tree.

"Ancestry.com opens a doorway to discovery with endless opportunities to research your family story, save your findings and share them with others," said Tim Sullivan, CEO, MyFamily.com, Inc., parent company of Ancestry.com. "We are offering more easy-to-use tools to help users save time and effort to achieve better results, enabling them to find and share a richer and more meaningful connection with their roots." With Ancestry.com users can now take advantage of the following new features and functionalities: Search: Upgraded functionality makes searching more efficient and accurate, instantly searching the site's 5 billion names. Multi-functional family trees become a search tool that helps users fill in the gaps. Family trees combine content with convenience by prompting users with possible family name matches (through a shaking leaf icon), linking them to supporting documents and records, and connecting users with existing user-uploaded family trees as a part of OneWorldTree.

Newly designed search tabs feature four specific categories that enable users to define their own search universe and readily access data easier than ever. - Historical Records: Census records, passenger lists, draft cards, vital records, etc. - Family Trees: Searches matching information from hundreds of thousands of trees in one spot - Stories & Publications: Newspaper articles, personal histories, diary entries, etc. - Photos & Maps: Photos of family members, ships, cities, buildings, maps of then and now, etc.

• Save: Person Pages can be created for each family member and serve as a storage location for a timeline of life events, stories, documents and records, photographs and other rich individual artifacts bringing individual family members' stories to life. Users can build their own family tree on Ancestry.com or upload an existing family tree from a GEDCOM file.

• Share: Users now have control over who has access to their content --they can keep it personal, share it with friends and family or make it public. Other members on the site can conduct a search and find whether a person they are searching for exists in any personal member trees and anonymously contact other users researching the same people or family lines.

Submitted by Pat Valentine More Free Charts http://misbach.org/pdfcharts/ I like the Grandmothers Box chart as it keeps the male surname all the way across the top. Also it would be neat to print the "tree" on a T-shirt. And it is the only place I've seen the one for pictures.

EGSF By-Law revisions…..

Revision, additions and/or changes were made to the EGSF By-Laws this past summer by the Officers and Directors. For members at the September and October meetings, the up-dated By-Laws were discussed. There will a vote on the 2006 Revised By-Laws at the November meeting. Below is a very brief summary of the new By-Laws revisions, additions/changes:

· At the regular February meeting, a Nominating Committee shall be established. · Term limits for Officers deleted · Members shall be encouraged to share their 4-generation Ancestral Chart upon completion

As you read the newsletter, you will note that the current officers have agreed to remain in office for a 1 or 2 year term. This is necessary to do since the election this year would be for all officers and 2 directors.

The By-Laws will now have the election of officers staggered, starting with next year.

National Archives Announces Changes in Hours

For research, the Washington, DC, area facilities would be open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and would no longer have evening or Saturday hours.

The new hours of operation for the museum side of the National Archives Building would be 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the spring and summer (March 15 through Labor Day). Fall and winter hours (the day after Labor Day through March 14) would remain unchanged: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. These changes affect (except for special events) the Rotunda, the Public Vaults, the O’Brien Gallery, the Archives Shop, and the McGowan Theater, when it reopens.

The museum would close on Thanksgiving Day in addition to December 25.

The National Archives regional archives around the country would continue to operate during core hours, but would modify their extended hours, effective October 2. For more information, go to the Regional Archives page on the NARA web site.
