TIMELINE PROCESS FOR OCEAN EXPORTS

Container inside Port

Generally, to avoid demurrage you only need to return on or after the Earliest Receiving Date (ERD)

Some lines don’t accept the container before the ERD

If booking is rolled with container inside the port, demurrage will most likely apply for next vessel

Some lines count the day of return as part of the free days

Demurrage/Storage is paid to the Shipping Line

All this also applies at Destination!

* Some lines bill Demurrage/Storage until Port Cutoff , not Sailing

Generally, to avoid per diem you need to return the container to the

ramp before the free days are over.

Some lines start counting the number of days from day of pickup

Generally, the rails depart every day so storage often does not apply at

ramp terminals. However, they could apply at the port

To avoid demurrage, always return after ERD date

If the container was returned after ERD but the rail arrives too early to

the port, demurrage could apply. However this is generally absorbed

by the line depending on the situation

If it was returned before ERD (and the rail accepted it) but it arrives to

the port too early, demurrage could apply and we are responsible for it
