A change of career saw Tim move into Construction Management in 2003 on the Integrated Clinical Education Centre at UHNS North Staffs Hospital. Into his 28 th year with Laing O’Rourke Tim has taken his engineering knowledge and combined this with his management skills, health and safety and quality management knowledge to thoroughly drive the successful completion of North Staffs PFI Hospital over the last few years. Upon completion of North Staffs PFI the next challenge was Heathrow Terminal 2a and the completion of the Departures level on this prestigious project . Construction Manager

January 2013 – June 2014 Heathrow Terminal 2a £1bn

Construction Manager managing the fit out of the Departures Level at Heathrow Terminal 2a.

Reporting directly to the Project Leader managing the fit out consisted of traditional finishes plus those associated with an airport terminal .

Heathrow Airport is the main airport serving London and the the United Kingdom . The new terminal’s design continues the “toast rack” principle employed in the construction of terminal 5 , a layout that maximises uses of the airport’s land by placing the terminal building and its satellites perpendicular to the runways . Like terminal 5 much of the building will be constructed off-site , helping to overcome many of the logistical constraints of building in one of the world’s busiest international airports .

Project Manager

October 2012 – December 2012 PET / CT Scanner Suite , North Staffs £1.5m

Completion of the PET / CT Scanner at North Staffs .

This refurbishment contract was completed under the P21 banner and handed over successfully as the final P21 project on this scheme .

This scheme was constructed within an existing structure to the specification required for a modern day PET / CT Scanner suite .

Construction Manager

2009 – October 2012 Hub , Wards & DTC, North Staffs PFI £475m

The flagship building and pinnacle of the North Staffs PFI development in North Staffordshire. Senior Construction Manager reporting directly to the Project Leader overseeing all aspects of the construction phase.

The construction featured pre-cast concrete slabs, wall panels, glass curtain walling, masonry, rain screen cladding, M & E installations and high class finishes. Tim was also the appointed person for lifting operations on this contract which at its peak had 5 tower cranes and various mobile cranes on site.

Tim also had close liason with the client and Building Control throughout the contract for the inspection and snagging of the contract.

Construction Manager

2007 – 2009 Maternity & Oncology, North Staffs P21

£54m

Construction Manager responsible for the construction of the prestigious Maternity & Oncology Building at North Staffs. Using various construction methods, predominantly pre-cast concrete, rain screen cladding, masonry and quality finishes this project also featured the latest in technology for cancer treatment.

The Maternity and Oncology building is an amalgamation of two very different uses, the provision of a fully equipped Maternity building and adjoining Cancer treatment building.

The building is constructed over ground, three upper levels and additional rooftop plant rooms. For the main part, the building is rectangular in shape incorporating two courtyards to provide daylight to internal areas. In addition there is a rotund section which also has an internal courtyard. This is arranged over ground, one upper level and rooftop plant room. The gross internal area is 19,900m2.

The construction utilised the latest pre-manufacture methods. Columns and walls were produced off-site then delivered and erected on site.

Appointed Person for lifting operations, overseeing an in house lifting team.

2006 North Staffs Car Park 1A £4m

Construction Manager reporting directly to the Project Leader this project featured in-situ post tensioned concrete, cedar and rain screen cladding, curtain walling and landscaping .

Project Manager

2005 – 2006 Research & Development Centre, North Staffs Hospital £3m

Project Manager responsible for the completion and handover of a NHS Genomics Laboratory researching into gene therapy. Load bearing block work with brickwork facing. Composite concrete decked flooring. Substructure and internal fit out.

Construction Manager

2005 Ricoh Arena , Coventry £53m

Overall management of the main stand and away end of the stadium. This encompassed the construction of the dressing rooms, club offices, catering areas, police cells and groundmans requirements.

This building is a state of the art sports stadia built to the highest quality on a tight programme.

The Ricoh Arena is a multi - purpose facility which provides the home for Coventry City FC . The 32,000 all seat football stadium also has the ability to host rugby matches and concerts.

Attached to the stadium is a 6,500m2 exhibition centre , comprising two halls that can be converted into one larger facility . Below the exhibition centre and extending under the associated plant and service areas is a 10,000m2 casino . There are also hospitality areas , overnight accommodation and retail outlets .

Construction Manager

2004 – 2005 Temple House Residential / Retail, Birmingham £9m

Construction Manager reporting directly to the Project Manager. This project was delivered before deadline, within budget and to the specified quality.

There are 8 levels of city centre living apartments above a Tesco retail unit on the ground floor. Located in the city centre. Concrete framed structure, glass and terracotta cladding. Glass balustrades to balconies overhead of busy pedestrian areas.

Construction Manager

2003 – 2004 Integrated Clinical Education Centre, North Staffs Hospital £15m

A new education centre at North Staffs Hospital. In the role of construction manager responsible for the internal and external completion of the project. This was an insitu-concrete framed structure featuring sprayed render, and a steel framed atrium roof.

The project involved the design and construction of a 7,100m2 three-story teaching, research and library facility , together with associated landscaping , car parking and new access road . Key client objectives included high quality design and aesthetic appeal.

The project was originally commissioned on a traditional procurement route, with the Trust appointing and briefing the design team for the development of the new build facility on their existing site .

2003 Jupiter 4 Residential Block, Birmingham £21m

Leading a team of engineers on a large residential block in the centre of Birmingham. Coupled with engineering my duties extended into appointed person for lifting operations and temporary works manager.

Project Engineer

2002 – 2003 Jupiter 1 Residential Block, Birmingham £11m

Refurbishment of an existing mill and tacking two new build structures on either gable end to form a new residential block. High spec finishes and façade retention was on of the highlights of this contract.

The project was located in the Ladywood area adjacent to canals and close to the centre of Birmingham. It involved the renovation and improvement of the existing Sherborne Mill, together with the construction of two new reinforced concrete blocks of four and six storeys, joined to the existing structure.

An 18 metre high, 70 metre long central glazed courtyard links the three blocks.

The project provides 104 residential units , three of which are live / work units , together with four commercial units constructed to shell and core standard .

Prefabricated bathroom pods were used throughout the development, to accelerate construction times and ensure quality.

Project Engineer

2001 – 2002 Asda Superstore, Thurmaston, Leicester £14m

Leading the engineering department and managing the groundwork’s and structural steelwork packages. This was a fast programme with key subcontractors.

Project Engineer

2000 – 2001 National College of School Leadership, Nottingham University £18m

Managing the engineering department, temporary works and Appointed Person for lifting. This was a high spec concrete frame featuring cedar cladding, structural glazing and extensive landscaping.

This 100 bedroom conference facility includes three glazed atriums, an auditorium, seminar rooms, an IT centre, exhibition spaces, catering and social facilities.

It is surrounded by car parking and landscaping that includes a freshwater lake. Piled foundations, insitu concrete frame (predominantly exposed fair faced).

The National College is designed to optimise its performance through energy saving technology and natural materials.

Other environmental features include green “grass” roofs covering each of the building wings; ground water from a new borehole located on the site provides a renewable source of cooling. The cool of the water is transferred to the air in the air handling equipment and the water is then used for flushing toilets, irrigation and topping up the lake.

Project Engineer

1999 – 2000 Eagle Shopping Centre, Derby £13m

Refurbishment of the existing Eagle Shopping Centre , including a new extension to Sainsbury’s store, new management suite , ten new shop units , refurbishment of the malls and the creation of new public toilet facilities.

Structural works included piling, foundations, RC frame and upper floor to the new Sainsbury unit, major demolition and rebuilding, including strengthening of foundations around Copecastle Square and the new rotunda area, and laminated timber beams to malls.

Other work included new floor, wall and ceiling finishes to malls, together with new mall roof glazing and external entrances. All work was carried out whilst the shopping centre was trading normally.
