TIM McGAHAN ACS

Welcome to the Queensland and Northern Territory ACS awards for another year.

I would like to pass on a very special thanks to all those who have given so much time to the ACS over the last twelve months. Firstly to an outstanding committee who generously give their time to ensure the ACS continues to be a strong and thriving society. I would like to thank all of our valued Cinematographers who have given their time and shared so freely their knowledge through our ACS functions and events. A very special thanks to Karen Hayward and the members of the awards committee that contributed to the planning and execution of these awards.

I would like to thank our entire esteemed judging panel that gave up their time to view more than 150 entries for tonight’s awards: Chairman of judges John Stokes ACS, David Knight ACS, Allan Collins ACS, Peter Collins ACS, Ben Nott ACS, Simon Christidis ACS and Aron Leong ACS.

This time each year we give a special thanks to and acknowledge the contribution our valued sponsors make towards the running of the ACS and allow us to host this and our various events throughout the year. I would also like to welcome our new sponsors and hope that we maintain a valuable and long lasting relationship.

Congratulations must go to QLD member Aron Leong who received his ACS accreditation at the national accreditation screenings in Sydney. Also at that screening ACS member John Bean was granted a posthumous accreditation. John was tragically killed in a helicopter accident earlier this year while on the job shooting. Accreditation is the highest honour that the Society can bestow and Aron and John can now proudly display the ACS letters after his name.

In September the ACS held accreditation screenings and the AGM for the first time in the National Headquarters in Sydney. A fabulous venue that just feels like home, the home of cinematography in Australia. A massive renovation effort and commitment of funds from the ACS, state branches and our sponsors who have once again dug deep.

Although sometimes the commitment of time is a struggle, it has been a pleasure to continue to lead the QLD ACS branch over the last twelve months. The QLD branch and the work that our members do continues to impress me and as a state we punch well above our weight.

I would like to also welcome Vice President Ian Richards from the Northern Territory who is here tonight on behalf of the President of the Northern Territory branch of the ACS, Andrew Hyde.

ANDREW HYDE

On behalf of the Northern Territory committee, I welcome you all to the Queensland/NT state awards for cinematography. Firstly let me pay a particular thanks all those that have given their time this year to participate as judges.

2010-11 has seen small but steady growth in the NT Branch, indeed our membership numbers have been slowly but consistently rising over the past 3 years. Credit for this must go to our outgoing President Ian Redfearn who brought no shortage of wisdom and a stabilising influence to the branch.

This year the NT Branch has once again sponsored the award for Best Cinematography at the Territory’s leading short film festival “Fist Full of Films”. Additionally, we have partnered with the Film & Television Association of the NT to facilitate a series of web based workshops and professional development sessions for the local industry. Central to this was Darwin’s first ever masterclass in Cinematography, conducted by Pieter De Vries ACS this past September.

The NT Branch continues to be characterised by the consider geographical divide that separates Darwin & Alice Springs. Nearly half of our members are based in the Red Centre making even a simple rudimentary committee meeting often something of a challenge. Nevertheless, the increasing vibrancy of our Branch reflects a Territory that’s going places!

A special thanks to Tim McGahan ACS, Karen Hayward and the Queensland Committee for their work throughout the year, and in bringing you tonight’s event, and a particular thanks to the sponsors for their continued support.

SCOTT TWEEDIE

Scott Tweedie is proving himself to be one of hottest young stars to come out of Australia. After being chosen from thousands of other young hopefuls in ABC Television’s ‘MeOn3’ campaign in 2009, Scott was selected to host Prank Patrol...the success of which now makes Scott Tweedie a household name in any family with children aged 5-16 years.

Scott has been touring Australia doing signings in shopping malls where over 1000 kids and their families have been known to show up. Scott’s easy- going nature and witty conversation skills make audience interaction a pleasure on all sides. These skills were demonstrated at the 2011 Trop Jnr Festival where Scott had the privilege of being asked to host on the main stage.

In 1981 John left Jumbuck to freelance in Sydney as a camera- assistant where he assisted the likes of Phil Pike ACS, David Lewis ACS and John Haddy. In 1982 he returned to Brisbane to start work at Zenac productions as the in house lighting cameraman shooting TV commercials and documentaries.

In 1985 John shot his first narrative project as a freelancer. It was a 30-minute pilot for a horror series called “A Room Next Door”. Since then he has photographed features, TV drama, documentaries and TV commercials.

John has recently finished shooting season 4 of “Packed to the Rafters” and 2nd unit photography on the US Series “Terra Nova”

DAVID KNIGHT ACS

David’s adventure in the Film and Television industry commenced when he was 16 and just out of school. David was lucky enough to land his first job as a Camera Assistant in the News Room at SBS.

Eventually he moved across to the Seven Network in Sydney as a Cameraman, working on current affairs program “Terry Willesee”. Although David worked in current affairs, he spent every spare moment watching Gaffer, Pat Hagan and Best Boy, Craig Sykes lighting Commercials on the Stages.

Through chance David moved across to the Nine Network as a Cameraman on “ A Current Affair” with Jana Wendt . At that time there was an explosion of Entertainment Programs and David decided to leave to work freelance on programs such as “Getaway”, 60 Minutes, NBC Dateline, CBS 48 Hours USA.

At the desire to move the camera on all theses shows, David thought steadicam wouldbe a great way to inject some life and energy into the images . Steadicam lead David into the Film Industry and fell in love again when he learnt how to expose Film Negative. Currently David shoots TVC’s and operates on Drama in Australia and the USA.

ARON LEONG ACS (QLD)

Aron Leong is the second son, of the first daughter, of the third wife, of the first son, of the second wife of Kwong Sue Duk, a Chinese Herbalist who migrated to Australia in 1892 & eventually settled with his 4 wives & 24 children.

Aron was born in Townsville, & spent the majority of his youth in Cairns. The second son of 4 boys to Dr Stephen & Loretta Leong, then moved to Brisbane & engaged in several failed attempts at Medicine, Science, & Fine Art. It was at this turning point in his life that he decided to pursue a field that was a passion.

Aron began his career in Cairns in 1988 as an in-house Commercial Photography Stills Assistant for Robert Gray Photography. In 1991 he branched out into the Motion Picture Industry as a Freelance Camera Assistant, where he spent a lot of time assisting Jim Frazier ACS (Designer of the Panavision/Frazier Lens System). It was on a job with Jim, that Aron met Director - Dick Marks ACS, who convinced him to move to Brisbane to become involved in the emerging Film Industry and Studios that were being developed in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast.

In 1995 Aron got his first break on a drama series for Director of Photography – John Stokes ACS. His role as A Camera Loader / B Camera Focus Puller on “Flipper” the television series, was the beginning of three years of solid work on television drama. During the long hard hours working on TV series, Aron was missing out on his family growing up, so he made the decision in 1998 to concentrate on television commercials, to allow him more time with his family. As a 1st AC, Aron worked with many legendary DOP’s, Phil Meheux BSC, Philippe Le Sourd, Andrew Lesnie ACS ASC, Ian Baker, Steve Windon ACS, David Eggby ACS, Ben Nott ACS, Keith Wagstaff ACS.

In 2004 Aron worked on his first short film as Director of Photography. The project, titled “The Boy and the Fish” won him a Gold Award at the Australian Cinematographers Society (Queensland Awards) 2005, plus the Australian Film and Television Radio School “Incentive Award”, was also shortlisted for Sony Tropfest, Runner Up at Redfest, and Screened at the San Francisco World Film Festival.

Aron has continued to win numerous ACS Awards for both his drama work, & commercial work. His most recent accolade was the Kodak Judges Award at the 2009 ACS Qld Awards for a short film titled “Push Bike”.

Aron’s passion for the Film Industry, and love of the story telling process has seen him work on projects across Australia, China, & most recently in Vietnam. He is an “Ideas Man”, with a strong visual eye, and a commitment to developing stories to get them onto a screen for an audience to appreciate and enjoy.

Aron is not afraid of the dark.

JOHN BEAN ACS (QLD)

John Wayne Bean was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, on June 12, 1963, the son of Colin & Judy Bean. A younger sister, Tammy, was born in 1966. He went to school locally, finishing at Glenmore State High, with a TE score of 990. Beanie could’ve done anything, but he opted to go to the Seven Hills College of Arts in Brisbane, initially to do graphic design. Then he discovered what could be done with a camera. He graduated at the top of his class and toyed with the idea of starting his own production company, but decided it was too risky and got a job filming commercials at RTQ7.

In 1986, he joined DDQ-10 in Toowoomba, which gave him a chance to do all manner of work, including shooting, editing and directing for the news bulletins. He was recommended to the ABC’s Canberra bureau and although initially skeptical about taking on a regional cameraman, the smarties were immediately impressed.

Bean met his beloved Pip, while he was working on Landline. She told her friends: ‘’I think I met the nicest man in the whole world!’’ The couple married in 1999. In 2009, he was assigned to the ABC Bureau in Washington.

John Bean was an award-winning lighting cameraman who worked for the ABC for 20 years. “He’s the cameraman that all the journalists wanted to work with”. ABC Managing Director Mark Scott said. “He was a great partner and a very talented craftsman.”

Beanie has left a legacy of remarkable work, remarkable images that will continue to remind us all of just how good he was at what he did. Once he put his eye to the lens, he was on another level. He has filmed many complete Australian Story programs. One, “With This Ring” was short-listed for a Walkley Award and won the Queensland Media Award along with a Silver ACS Award in 2003.
