    Rabbi’s & President’s Messages

"I used to think inspiration could be found anywhere, but I learned there are indeed bad books, pointless movies, and invitations that are best declined. These compose the cold zone. They take energy from you, in contrast to the hot zone: the people and activities that leave you with greater energy. Our task is to fine-tune our spiritual antennae to detect the hot zones that charge us... Just as we need food to keep our bodies going, we

need inspiration to fuel the embers in our souls to keep it burning" (Rabbi Shmuly Yanklowitz, Pirkei Avot: A Social Justice Commentary, p.xiii).

These words hit home for me as I find myself in a truly inspired place, exactly at the one year mark in my time as Senior Rabbi at Temple Israel. Over the past year, I have learned a lot about how to navigate the shoals of cold and hot zones that are inherent to building a holy community. I have honed my ability to anticipate the icy waters of fear and uncertainty to help steer us collectively towards the warmer, more inviting currents of hope and vitality. And our TI community, as far as my compass tells me, is moving slowly but surely towards our own True North, our own hot zone, where we are "charged with holy fire" (ibid.) and burning with a desire to see our communal vision come to fruition.

Seeking inspiration in one's life can take on many forms. For an individual, it can mean defying small-mindedness or finding the courage to speak up for what you believe in. For a spiritual community like ours, it can mean finding common ground to create a morally responsible collective that shares its time, treasure and talent with others. Temple Israel's vision is to be "fine-tuning our spiritual antennae to detect the hot zones that charge us," and that will take place in the following ways: By seeing to it that our children will always feel Temple Israel is

their home. By making Temple Israel the premier house of faith for moving

the needle on social justice. By ensuring that music will be the signature of TI in the

community to inspire, uplift, center and motivate members. By making Jewish learning accessible to all by meeting people

where they are and providing multiple entry points for learning.

My dream is for everyone connected to Temple Israel to become "inspiration addicts," every one of us seeking opportunities to make meaning of our lives together, blessing each other with our insights and deeds, and sharing them.

As Temple Israel welcomes in the new year, I invite you to take this coming year as your personal opportunity to ask not "What can I receive?" but "Who do I want to be, and how can my connection to TI propel me and others toward the hot zone of spiritual awakening?"

Inspired by you and the holy work we are doing together every day,

    Rabbi Sharon Mars

Living in the Hot Zone President’s Message

Dear Temple Israel Families, Summer has been busy! Kids are at camp, families have been travelling the globe, and Temple Israel has been full of activity! On July 24th the final building plans will be set for approval by the City of Columbus. This meeting will be a review and vote by the zoning committee and hopefully an approval of our requested setback and parking variances. The

granting of these approvals is the final step required to move ahead with our plan to break ground late this summer/early fall. I am pleased to formally invite you to two congregational preview events on Thursday, July 26 and Thursday, August 2. These two evenings will provide you the opportunity to tour and see our future location at 3100 East Broad Street as it exists today. You will have the opportunity to view the architectural renderings and to learn more about the vision and plans for the renovation of the property. Our new building will become a focal point of our mission and be a place where our members can connect to one another and to community in which we are located focusing on the sacred work of tikkun olam. Please join us on either date beginning at 5 o’clock as we plan to have a presentation each evening beginning at 5:30 p.m. Children are always welcome. Cantor Moses will offer special programming for children, fun, crafts, and games at the August 2nd event. There remains much work to be done. The necessary preparation to begin construction is complete and our interior design work is underway. As we wrote in our May TIKUN, one of the key outcomes of this year of wandering has been the decision to have a Building Campaign in advance of construction. To that end, we are grateful to report that several early leadership gifts have already been committed to the campaign. I am very excited to inform our congregation that over $500,000 has been pledged and 100% of our Temple Israel and Temple Israel Foundation Boards have participated. Undertaking this Campaign is the right thing to do and is necessary to sustain our synagogue for future generations. It is our hope that a successful campaign will help address the rising construction costs over the past year as well as add to our Foundation funds. These funds should help us both with additional programming as well as to ensure that we have funds to maintain our building in future years. We look forward to meeting with individual congregants over the summer to ensure that we are fiscally ready to enter our next chapter. With your support we can establish new roots for Temple Israel and leave a legacy for our children and grandchildren.

Need or want more information – please contact Ruth Silverman at 614.866.0010 ext. 102 or [email protected] Looking for a fresh start this Yom Kippur? Please join us in wearing white or light colors for the Day of Atonement. Some say that we wear white on Yom Kippur to be like the angels. We yearn to ascend, to be lighter, more clear and transparent. Another interpretation is that we wear white on Yom Kippur as an approximation of the white garments in which we will be buried. (Some of us may even wear a kittel, a simple white cotton robe, which is worn at marriage and for burial.) Wearing white is a reminder of our mortality. Our tradition teaches that it is a mitzvah to make teshuvah, to repent and to clear one’s personal and interpersonal slate, the day before death. But how do any of us know when we will die? Aha, say the sages; then we must make teshuvah every day. And surely this is true. But there is something particularly special and meaningful about the teshuvah we make on Yom Kippur, perhaps because on this day we get in touch with our mortality. As we face death, we become more honest with ourselves, with others, and with God. On Yom Kippur, wearing the garments we will wear when we die is a stark reminder that we stand every day on the edge of life and death. — by Rabbi Rachel Barenblat; from Three Yom Kippur Customs Explained Take your Yom Kippur observance to the next level by doing SHUVU – returning to your best self and participating in one of our afternoon activities below.

Temple Israel Foundation What is Your Legacy?

Who is the kind of individual who leaves a legacy to an organ-ization? The truth is, there is no special type of person. Any-one can do it. It can be as simple as naming Temple Israel Foundation as the beneficiary of a portion of your retirement plan assets or including a couple of sentences in your will. What are your options? You can include a gift in your will of a percentage of your estate – to ensure that your gift will remain proportionate to your estate no matter how it fluctuates over the years. Leave highly taxed assets, such as those in your pre-taxed re-tirement accounts, to Temple Israel since we receive them tax-free. Then leave other less tax-burdened assets, such as Roth IRAs, real estate or cash, to your loved ones. Stipulate that your gift be given in honor or in memory of someone you care about, leaving a legacy that your loved ones will cherish. When is the best time to begin creating a legacy? It is never too early – or too late – to begin creating your legacy. Contact us to learn more: Brian Tuckerman, president, Tem-ple Israel Foundation, 614-402-0880, or Elaine Tenenbaum, Executive Director, Temple Israel Foundation, 614-657-8501.
