Tiki ChapelBy Connie Pratt

“We are now gathering together at the Chapel for Sunday worship at 9:00 a.m. It is so good to be able to gather together again. We are continuing to follow the guidelines set forth by the government surrounding the Covid-19 virus by practicing safe distancing. We are also continu-ing to provide the service via the Zoom video stream for anyone who is not able to attend in person. The Zoom link, along with the song lyrics for the service, is provided through email distribution. Monday Night Bible Study and Wednesday Ladies Fellowship will not resume until the fall.

If you are not currently on the Chapel email distribution list and would like to be, please email Connie at [email protected], and she will add you to the list. Any Chapel news and event updates are sent out via this email distribution list. You can also be added to our Prayer Partners email distribution list to be notified of any prayer requests received during the week. Should you have any prayer requests, feel free to email those to Connie also, and they will be included in our prayer time on Sundays.

Please know that the Tiki Chapel leadership is here for you and are available if you have a need. Pastor Steve Hill can be reached at [email protected] or 409-933-9829.”

INSURED BONDED

A friend of mine said this recently: “Every day I wake up and I think things can’t possibly get any worse than the day before, but they do.” This is not a man whose regular demeanor fits that statement. In fact, he is a high-func-tioning, overachieving, successful, and relatively young man. The world is his oyster, and if he feels disillusioned lately, most of us do. Given all of the sweet deals we have been dealt so far this year, it would be abnormal to not feel overwhelmed at times. In 2018, NIMH (National Institute of Mental Health) reported that 4.6% of adults in the U.S. had a severe psy-chological condition. These are not the people I want to focus on in this article. That said, they are going through the same extraordinary pressures that we all are now, and they are at risk. I watched a video last week of a woman who was clearly off of her medication. She was scream-ing expletives at everyone in a Walmart but trying to tell them about Jesus too. It reminded me of the church my family belonged to when I was a child. For the already mentally ill, those teetering on the edge, and even those who otherwise seem unaffected, recent events in fact are impacting us all. Anxiety is among one of the top 3 mental illnesses, and the most common stressors that lead to anxiety are work, school, marriage/relation-ship, finances, emotional trauma (death), medical illness, and prescription /illicit drug side effects. I score a 4-5 depending on my husband, and I would guess that most people have at least 3-4 of those stressors lately. Anxiety’s

most common symptoms include uncontrollable worry/fear, muscle tension, fast heartbeat, difficulty sleeping/in-somnia, difficulty concentrating, physical discomfort (ex. chest pains), irritability, and panic attacks. Some of those symptoms sound familiar, and I know I am not alone. Anxiety is the human body’s natural response to stress. It is a normal response in otherwise healthy people. What can we do? How can we prevent each other from showing up in a Walmart video? There are an infinite number of short-term coping strategies, and its likely you will already have several to fall back on. Deep breath-ing, journaling, exercise, meditation/prayer, gardening, fishing, and making music and art are all positive coping methods. If you find your routine becoming disheveled and you feel unable to cope with life’s pressures on your own, talk to your doctor. Doctors are just people, and they are going through the same struggles as the rest of us. A medical doctor can direct you to a therapist who can help identify the triggers for your anxiety and provide support solving problems that may seem overwhelming. Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorders or disabilities. It involves actively looking after your on-going wellness and happiness, coping with the pressures of life, and being productive and able to contribute to your community. Take care of yourself. A Minute with MaxBy Max McDulin

Fishing ReportBy Max McDulin

Hello friends, I hope you are all doing well! It is an honor to introduce myself to the Tiki Island community. My name is Max McDulin, and I will be writing a monthly column for the paper entitled “A Minute with Max” and a monthly fish-ing report.Originally a South Houston

native of the Clear Lake area I come from your prototyp-ical American family. My Dad is about as blue collar as they come, in Texas he was a maintenance tech for Igloo Coolers, and my mother was an art teacher at Clear Lake High School. They’ve since moved to Ohio, just as I did for college. Now I’ve come on back, and I’m trying to convince them to do the same!I feel lucky for a few reasons in my return to Texas. I feel lucky to have the chance to write my column, which will be observational about our community and world with an emphasis on positive energy. I feel lucky to get to write about local and offshore fishing, something I’ve been a part of doing down here since I was ten. I feel lucky also to be returning here to Texas as a tennis coach, and I feel lucky to hopefully get to share my passion for life and love for our country and community through my writings.

I’m also grateful for the people who have welcomed me with open arms since I arrived in March. My grandpar-ents, Bonnie and Richard Martin, have lived here for half the year each year since 2014 and I’ve been lucky to meet many of you since then. This place has a lust and joy for life that is already abun-dantly apparent. You share a joy for boating, good food, good times, and seem united to genuinely appreciate each day, each are attitudes and interests that I also take pride in.I hope you’ll enjoy taking a minute or two of your time each month in the physical paper, and maybe a moment at church or in person to share with me your thoughts and interests. I’ll also be sharing a more frequent col-umn on FaceBook and am happy to connect with anyone there as well!A little further background on myself, I played tennis at Clear Falls High School, in League City. While in High School I broadcast local sports on Texas Sports Radio Network and eventually went on to school at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio (Go Bobcats!)I broadcast and wrote for local papers and radio stations in the year, but always missed my Texas roots. Thanks for welcoming me back and sharing a minute, hope to catch you around.

Galveston Bay fishing has been strong for Redfish, Speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, pompano, black drum. The best bait, per usual this time of year has been live shrimp freelined along both the north and south Galveston Jetties. Personally, I’ve also had considerable success coastally in the bay in the Bacliff to Kemah area with Berkley Gulp Peeler Crabs as a plastic on a weight and leader. Mostly Redfish hitting it.The beachfront has had relatively good water clarity and the Speckled trout are being caught in the surf. As water temperatures continue to rise, surf fishing will improve. In Tiki off the docks we’ve had periods of success with Redfish and have had considerable success with Flounder. Local kayak fishermen have had success up and down the canals, and from Highland Bayou to Jones Bay. Marsh drains, shoreline, and structure have led to the best successes. While with most all other bay fishing, shrimp have been most effective, baby mullet, mullet, menhaden, and croak-ers are going to continue to be the go-to bait for Flounder.Texas City Dike has seen a good run with Redfish being caught on live bait, and strong anglers have been effec-tive with plastics. In the same area, but more in the shal-lows Speckled trout have been hitting shrimp and small plastics.

My most recent successful trip that I highly advise, at daybreak (about 30 minutes or so before sunrise) wade fishing in the surf with top waters and spoons. You’re fishing for Trout and Redfish, some marine life has start-ed to increase from the warming of the water, but you’ll mostly encounter the good eating fish you’re looking for.If the surf is soft enough, I also advise popping corks with live bait if you have the set up to do it while wading into the surf. You’ll undoubtedly get some hits. We’ve had a mix of good green water days, but the surf and current has led to some weaker days than I’m personally used to this time of year.Friends have had regular success at Big Hanna Reef and had a great day of Speckled Trout, Redfish, and even a flounder in the box while fishing with mostly top waters, and live shrimp on a popping cork, while wading along the shore. With that being said, what’s been successful so far for you? Sometimes it might be the opposite for you and your group, or maybe we are all doing pretty well with the same set ups.Feel free to email me at [email protected] with your fishing stories, personal tips and tricks, and photos from successful trips. We would love to add them to the paper.
