IMPRESSIVE ROAD WINS
Since becoming head coach at Texas
Southern Mike Davis has captured impres-
sive road wins over some of the nations
top basketball programs. TSU defeated
Michigan State 71-64 in overtime
(12/20/14). The year before that TSU
knocked off Temple 90-89 (12/18/13). This
season the Tigers have posted road wins
over Rice, La Salle, and James Madison.
GRIFFIN TABBED PLAYER OF THE
YEAR
TSU forward Derrick Griffin has estab-
lished himself as one of the most exciting
players to watch in college basketball as
he was named SWAC Player of the Year
last season and Preseason Player of the
Year heading into this year. The 6-7 big
man has had the ability to consistently post
double-doubles and last season he set a
new league record for consecutive double-
doubles. Griffin is a standout athlete and
has also spent time playing on the football
field at wide receiver.
NCAA RANKINGS
Derrick Griffin currently ranks 2nd in the
NCAA in offensive rebounds. He also has
been a double-double machine as he
ranks 9th in the nation in that category.
LOFTON CONTINUES TO POST SOLID
NUMBERS
TSU transfer guard Zach Lofton has been
a big part of the Tigers success this sea-
son as he currently leads the team in scor-
ing with 21.0 points per game. Lofton has
been named the SWAC Player of the
Week twice this season.
ROBINSON HELPS ADD ONE-TWO
PUNCH
Another guard that has played well for the
Tigers is Pacific transfer Dulani Robinson.
Robinson average 12.9 points per game
and averages a team high 5.3 assists per
outing.
LAST OUTING
SIU 74, TSU 70
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Despite a furious second half comeback attempt the Texas
Southern Tigers fell to Southern Illinois 74-70 on Saturday. TSU was trailing 36-27, when they stormed back as Dulani Robinson's 3-pointer with 1:30 left gave Texas Southern the lead, 70-68 in the second half of play. Robinson was called for a foul with 1:11 left, sending Mike Rodriguez to the line for two free throws. After making the first, Tex-as Southern was called for a technical foul and SIU's Armon Fletcher connected on one of two from the line, after which Rodri-guez returned to hit the second of two. SIU added two more points from the chari-ty stripe with eight seconds remaining to help seal the game for the Salukis. Derrick Griffin posted another double-double with 12 points and 13 boards while Kevin Scott chipped in 13 points for the Tigers. UA 85, TSU 63 TUCSON, Ariz.- Texas Southern competed hard but the Tigers fell behind early in a 85-63 loss at #16 Arizona on Wednesday night. Arizona was able to build a 13-point lead in the opening five minutes of play. The Ti-gers would subsequently go into intermis-sion trailing by 19 points. The second half of play was a much tighter game with Arizona only outscoring TSU 40-37 but unfortunately the Tigers were not able to get enough stops defensively to mount a comeback. Texas Southern was once again led in scoring by Zach Lofton who contributed 19 points while fellow teammate Jalan McCloud added 14. Derrick Griffin posted another impressive double-double with 12 points and 11 re-bounds. Texas Southern will have a few days off before returning to the hardwood to face Southern Illinois on the road on Saturday, Dec. 3
rd.
ULL 84, TSU 73
LAFAYETTE, La. – The Texas Southern
Tigers had their four-game win streak
snapped by Louisiana-Lafayette, as TSU
fell 84-73 to the Ragin' Cajuns.
The Ragin' Cajuns were aided by an ad-
vantage on the offensive boards as the
Tigers allowed 15 offensive rebounds and
were out-rebounded 41-30.
TSU trailed 43-42 going into intermission
but the Tigers were outscored by 10 points
(41-31) in the second half thanks in part to
an 18-4 run by ULL that helped turn the
game in their favor.
Zach Lofton scored 24 points, connecting
on 9-of-14 from the line, to lead Texas
Southern. Dulani Robinson added 19
points and Derrick Griffin posted a double-
double grabbing 11 rebounds to go along
with 10 points.
TSU 67, James Madison 56
HARRISONBURG, Va.- The Texas South-
ern Tigers basketball team won their fourth
consecutive game while improving to 4-1
overall on the season after another impres-
sive road win.
TSU defeated James Madison 67-56 be-
hind a balance scoring attack of three play-
ers in double figures.
Dulani Robinson led all scorers with 17
points and 7 assists. Zach Lofton contribut-
ed 16 points while Derrick Griffin racked up
a double-double with 10 points and 11 re-
bounds.
The Tigers led 35-26 at intermission and
never looked back from that point as they
added on 32 points in the second half to
increase their lead to double digits.
Texas Southern is now off to its best start
in the Mike Davis era while also playing
solid basketball early in the season against
quality opponents.
TSU will have the next few days off from
competition before returning to the hard
wood to face Louisiana-Lafayette on the
road on Sunday at 4:00 pm.
TSU 77, La Salle 76
PHILADELPHIA – Dulani Robinson's 3-
pointer as time expired lifted the visiting
Texas Southern Tigers to a thrilling 77-76
win Saturday at La Salle.
Robinson drove approximately two-thirds
the length of the court and connected on
the game-winning shot after La Salle's De-
metrius Henry missed the front end of a
one-and-one free throw trip with five sec-
onds remaining. Henry' shot was rebound-
ed by TSU's Derrick Griffin, who got the
ball to Robinson for last-second heroics.
The win was Texas Southern's third
through the first four games of 2016-17,
giving the Tigers the best start to a season
since head coach Mike Davis was hired in
2012.
Robinson led five TSU players scoring in
double-figures, tallying 17 points Saturday;
he was 6-of-15 from the floor, while making
three out of his seven 3-point tries. Griffin
chipped in 16 points and a game-high eight
rebounds.
Marvin Jones and Zach Lofton scored 13
points apiece for the Tigers. Kevin Scott
came off the TSU bench to score 10
points, shooting 4-of-6 from the floor.
B.J. Johnson scored a game-high 24
points on 6-of-8 shooting to lead La Salle
(1-2); Johnson made all three of his 3-point
attempts and all nine of his free throws.
Cleon Roberts scored 16 points off the La
Salle Bench, going 6-of-6 from the field
with four 3-pointers.
Together, Johnson and Roberts kept La
Salle in a game the Explorers led for only
12 minutes. While the team shot 46 per-
cent (25 of 55) from the field and 45 per-
cent (9 of 20) from the 3-point circle, with-
out Johnson and Roberts, La Salle's field
goal percentage dropped to 32 percent,
while its 3-point showing was a dismal 15
percent (2 of 13).
Meanwhile, the Tigers shot 48 percent (26
of 54) from the floor, which included sec-
ond-half showing of 56 percent (15 of 27).
TSU outscored their hosts 43-41 after
halftime.
TSU seized control of the game early, tak-
ing its largest lead of the contest when
Jalan McCloud knocked down a jumper
with 10:27 left in the first half to stretch the
Tigers' lead to 23-10. La Salle fought back
with an 11-2 run over the next three and a
half minutes. The Explorers took a 35-34
lead into halftime.
The second half featured nine of the
game's 10 lead changes and seven of its
eight ties. La Salle appeared to be in con-
trol when Johnson gave the Explorers their
largest lead of the game with a dunk with
1:23 left in the contest, building the home
team's lead to 74-69.
The Tigers responded with a layup by
Lofton on the team's next trip down the
floor, making the game a one-possession
contest with 1:04 remaining. After a missed
dunk by La Salle's Pookie Powell, Lofton
cut the deficit to one with a fast-break
jumper in the paint with 33 seconds left.
Clinging to the lead, the Explorers used as
much time as they could before Powell
was fouled by Lofton, sending him to the
line with eight seconds left to play. Powell
made both free throws to push La Salle's
lead back to 76-73.
On TSU's next possession, Powell fouled
Scott, who made one out of two free
throws with six seconds left. The Tigers
opted to foul immediately, sending Henry
to the line for a one-and-one opportunity.
The 6-foot-9 reserve was 1-of-7 from the
field at that point, and yet to attempt a free
throw in the game. The strategy worked,
as he missed his first shot, which was then
succeeded by Robinson's heroics.
The Tigers conclude their two-game trip to
the East Coast on Monday when they visit
James Madison. Tipoff is scheduled for 6
p.m. CST (7 p.m. local time).
TSU 71, Rice 68
HOUSTON- Texas Southern won its sec-
ond straight game as Zach Lofton scored a
game high 26 points and blocked a 3-point
shot attempt as time expired helping hand
TSU a 71-68 victory over the Rice Owls on
Wednesday night at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Texas Southern secured the lead for good
with roughly 17 minutes left in regulation,
as they led by as many as seven points
during the contest.
The Owls would subsequently make the
game interesting as Marcus Ev-
ans converted a 3-pointer to pull Rice to 69
-68 with 45 seconds left.
After both teams missed shots on their
next possessions TSU's Kevin Scott made
a pair of free throws before Lofton
blocked Marcus Jackson's final heave at a
game tying 3-point attempt.
Lofton was 10-of-27 from the field and
made three 3-pointers. Derrick Griffin had
16 points and 12 rebounds for Texas
Southern (2-1).
"I was really happy we got the win for TSU
as a university because we're both from
Houston," said Lofton. "They don't expect
us to come in and beat another mid-major
school. That was big for me that we got the
win for them."
With the win TSU head coach Mike Davis
adds yet another impressive win to his
TSU coaching resume. The Tigers pro-
gram has also beaten the likes of Temple
and Michigan State during Davis tenure as
head coach.
Davis had his team primed for an upset on
Wednesday night as the Tigers came out
aggressive to start the second half of play.
Davis was intent on keeping his team fo-
cused on their intensity level after watching
film of the Owls win over James Madison.
"They were up four or five at the half and
they ended up winning by 24," Davis said
of the Owls win over James Madison. "We
were really conscious of not coming out
going too slow. Push the basketball in tran-
sition. Try to get some earlier baskets if we
could."
The Tigers will now get set to travel and
face LaSalle on November 19th in Philadel-
phia.
TSU 74, Delaware State 61
DOVER, Del.- The Texas Southern Tigers played in two games in less than 24 hours but you would not have been able to tell by the high level energy and focus TSU played with on Sunday.

Southern used a big first-half run to surge past Delaware State 74-61 on Sunday.
Jones' jumper tied it at 9-9 and began a 14-3 run that the Tigers used to build a 30-26 halftime advantage. Texas Southern con-trolled the tempo throughout the second half, leading by as many as 17 points.
Texas Southern guard Jalan McCloud scored 14 points off the bench and Derrick Griffin added 10 points for the Tigers, who went on to outrebound the Hornets 46-23.

Head Coach Mike Davis
Texas Southern University announced the appointment of Mike Davis to the position of Head Men’s Basketball Coach on October 27,
2012. Davis arrived to TSU after spending six seasons at the helm of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) men's basket-
ball program.
In 2014 and 2015 Davis led the Tigers to a SWAC Tournament Championship titles as TSU defeated Prairie View A&M and South-
ern respectively. The Tigers advanced to the 2014 NCAA Tournament where they went on to face Cal-Poly in the First Four.
In 2015 they face Arizona as a #15 seed in the first of the Big Dance.
Davis was instrumental in the development of 2014 SWAC Player of the Year Aaric Murray. Murray was also named the 2014 SWAC Tournament MVP as he
led the conference in scoring (21.3), blocked shots (2.5), and shot 49 percent from the field. In 2015 he helped guide Madarious Gibbs to POY honors as
well.
In his first season at Texas Southern Davis led the Tigers' basketball program to a 2012-13 Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season championship.
TSU reeled off 12 consecutive wins to conclude the season with a 16-2 mark in conference play. Davis also eclipsed the 250 career wins mark during the
Tigers 2012-13 campaign.
Under the coaching guidance of Davis Texas Southern had four players named to the All-SWAC team highlighted by senior guard Omar Strong being named
the 2012-13 SWAC Player of the Year. Fred Sturdivant was selected as the 2012-13 SWAC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocked
shots.
Through five seasons with the Blazers, Davis owned an impressive record of 122-72 (.629) overall with a 62-34 mark in Conference USA play during his six
years in Birmingham. Davis holds a 237-151 (.608) overall career record in his 12 years as a head coach highlighted by seven 20+ win seasons.
Davis also led his teams to success off the court and in the classroom, as the Blazers achieved a team GPA of 3.0 during the 2010 fall semester. Additionally,
the squad also had four consecutive semesters of a perfect 1000 APR score while Davis was at the helm of the program.
“I’m really excited for the opportunity to lead the Texas Southern men’s basketball program,” said Davis. “Basketball has grown tremendously in the state of
Texas over the past years and I’m looking forward to being apart of the TSU athletic department and the local community.”
Davis had a highly successful season at UAB in 2010-11, as he guided the Blazers to the program's first-ever Conference USA regular season title. In doing
so, he was named the 2011 Conference USA Coach of the Year, while also earning NABC All-District Coach of the Year accolades.
In 2010-11 Davis also guided the Blazers to an NCAA Tournament at-large berth with a record of 22-9 and a 12-4 mark in league play. UAB earned at least
20 victories in the regular season in four-straight years under Davis tenure (2007-2012), marking the first time that feat had been in achieved in program his-
tory. The Blazers also won at least 11 conference games in each of those seasons.
Under Davis the program clinched four consecutive postseason berths (three NITs and one NCAA Tournament). Davis subsequently etched his name in the
record books as he became only the second coach in UAB history to reach 90 wins in a four-year span. The only other coach in program history to accom-
plish the feat was Hall of Famer Gene Bartow, who reached the pinnacle with a school record 94 from 1983-87.
The Fayette, Ala., native arrived at UAB from Indiana University, where he served as the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 2000-06. While there, he
compiled a 115-79 record. Davis teams played some of their best basketball during the postseason, evidenced by Davis' 21-12 record in the month of March
and his 7-4 NCAA Tournament mark, including a run to the NCAA Championship game in 2002.
Under Davis, the Hoosiers enjoyed considerable success, including a trip to the 2002 national championship game against Maryland. Named the 25th head
coach in Indiana history on Sept. 12, 2000, Davis had the most successful first season of any of his 24 predecessors. His 21 wins were four more than any
other first-year IU head coach. His success was not limited to just IU, as his 21 victories ranked him second among first-year head coaches in the country in
2000-01.
Prior to being named head coach Davis had already contributed significantly to the Indiana program. He spent the previous three seasons as an assistant
coach with the Hoosiers. His successful recruitment of several of the country's top prep players earned him national recognition at Indiana.
In addition to his recruiting success, he was instrumental in the development of several players including A.J. Guyton, the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player in
2000, Kirk Haston, a first-round NBA selection in 2001, and 2002 Big Ten MVP and consensus second-team All-American Jared Jeffries, who was the 11th
overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft by the Washington Wizards.
In Davis' three seasons as an IU assistant, the Hoosiers compiled a 63-32 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament all three seasons. Davis
came to Indiana after a two-year stint (1995-97) as an assistant coach under David Hobbs at the University of Alabama. The 1995-96 Crimson Tide basket-
ball team posted a 23-10 record and advanced to the NIT Final Four. Davis' coaching tenure with Alabama marked his return to the Crimson Tide.
Davis spent his collegiate-playing career with the Tide after earning the state's Mr. Basketball honor and All-America status in 1979. He was a standout for
four seasons at Alabama and finished his career in the Top 25 on the Crimson Tide's all-time scoring list with 1,211 points. In his first season, he played for
the legendary C.M. Newton and then spent his final three years playing under another coaching legend, Wimp Sanderson. Davis averaged 10.1 points per
game for his career and ranks third all-time on the school's steals list with 165. During his four seasons at Alabama, the Crimson Tide posted an 80-42 record
and advanced to two NIT and two NCAA Tournaments.
