To people outside of North America, several of our holidays may seem peculiar. Imagine a foreign person arriving here during our Halloween celebration, for instance. HOLIDAYS (continued): As part of their celebration of the vernal equinox,

the people congregate with buckets, hoses, water balloons, water pistols and anything else that can capably transport water for the purposes of drenching everything and everyone from head to toe. This may well be the world’s biggest water fight. Of course, “fight” isn’t really the right word, because the action of tossing water to others is actually perceived as a demonstration of kindness and respect during the festival. Maybe the “world’s biggest water hug” would be more appropriate.

• Each July, the citizens of the Eastern European republic of Belarus gather for Ivana Kupala Day, a celebration of fertility. Among the customs observed are dancing, singing and the donning of wreaths by both sexes. To add a special twist to their festivities, the people also go skinny-dipping and jump through fire, though presumably not at the same time.

• From the country that gives us the annual “Running of the Bulls” comes an even more curious holiday. On August 27, Spain observes La Tomatina. As you may have gathered from the name, this day involves tomatoes. What you may not have known is that it involves 30,000 people engaged in pitched aerial battle with the beloved red (or green) fruit. For two hours, natives toss tomatoes at each other until 125,000 of them pepper the landscape and people. It’s all in good fun, celebrating a similar spontaneous food fight that broke out during a parade over 65 years ago. Perhaps nowhere else has so much produce gone to such silly and undoubtedly enjoyable use.

Q: My husband is a huge fan of the History Channel, especially its series “Battlefield Detectives.” Any chance it will come out on DVD? I’d love to surprise him with it! -- Kaitlin M., in MinnesotaA: Surprise your husband this Valentine’s Day with a three-volume boxed set of the entire first season of the series. “Battlefield Detectives,” which ran from 2003 to 2006, explored history’s famous battles, focusing on the battlefield itself and conducting re-enactments and forensic research to

better understand what really happened. The DVDs also come with a 16-page viewer’s guide and biographies of major military leaders, plus other extras. Go to acornonline.com for more info on the series. ***Q: I really liked “That ‘70s Show,” especially Danny Masterson. I haven’t really seen him in anything lately and was wondering what shows/movies he has lined up. -- Leonard G., via e-mailA: TBS just announced that it is producing a new series called “Men at Work,” which will star Danny along with James Lesure, Michael Cassidy and Adam Busch. The story follows the misadventures of four friends who work together at a magazine, with Danny’s character, Milo, being recently dumped and his friends helping him get back in the game. Slated to premiere this summer, the show was created by Breckin Meyer (of “Franklin and Bash” and “Clueless” fame), who is co-executive-producing the show and also wrote the pilot. There’s no word yet on whether Breckin plans to make a cameo in the series.***Q: You mentioned that Madonna will be performing the halftime show at the Super Bowl this year, and it got me to wondering if Animal Planet will be continuing its tradition of showcasing its “Puppy Bowl” competition. Please say yes! -- Cara O., Halifax, Nova ScotiaA: YES! Animal Planet’s annual canine competition, “Puppy Bowl VIII,” will air on Sunday, Feb. 5, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. ET/PT. Animal Planet has searched shelters and rescue groups across the nation for the toughest pups ever to carry a chew toy across the goal line and into an end zone. And if you want to skip (or DVR) Madonna’s halftime show, the cute and cuddly kittens are returning to “Puppy Bowl” with an all-new edition of the Bissell Kitty Halftime Show. All of the animals featured in “Puppy Bowl” come from rescues and shelters across the United States. This year’s starting lineup includes puppies from spcaLA, All Star Pet Rescue, Go Boxer Rescue, Pet Matchmaker Rescue, Furever Dachshund Rescue and Huts for Mutts Dog Rescue. Those interested in adopting a pet in your area can visit petfinder.com.***Q: Aside from her Twitter ramblings, what else has Ellen Barkin been up to? -- Ingrid F., via e-mailA: Ellen just finished filming a guest-starring role on “Modern Family,” which will air this spring. Her movie “Another Happy Day,” which also stars Ellen Burstyn, Demi Moore, Kate Bosworth and Thomas Hayden Church, will be out on DVD in late January.

◆ It was noted 20th-century poet T.S. Eliot who made the following sage observation: “Some editors are failed writers, but so are most writers.”

◆ The United States’ first railroad was built in 1809 in Crown Creek, Pa., by a man named Thomas Leiper. It had wooden tracks.

◆ When the now-classic television show “Gilligan’s Island” first aired in 1964, critics were not impressed. The review published in the San Francisco Chronicle said, “It is difficult to believe that this show was written, directed and produced by adults. It marks a new low in the networks’ estimation of public intelligence.” The show went on to air for three seasons and spurred three TV movie sequels.

◆ Believing that beards and long hair were too easy for enemies to grab, Alexander the Great ordered his soldiers to shave their faces and heads before going into battle.

◆ You hear a lot about the isolationism of Switzerland -- the country that’s always neutral in any conflict -- but you might be surprised to learn how serious they are about it. The country’s system of roads is mined in 2,000 places and can be demolished in the space of 10 minutes.

◆ Are you doing your share? If you’ve had a beer today, you’ve contributed to the approximately 90 million cans of the brew that are consumed by Americans every day.

◆ When the territory that later became the state of Alaska was purchased from Russia in 1867, the cost came out to about 2 cents per acre.

◆ It’s not clear why, but it seems that fine hair grows faster than coarse hair.

HOLIDAYS (continued):• Northern Italians engage in fruit-flinging silliness

when they observe Iverea Carnevale’s “Battle of the Oranges.” During the three days of the country’s annual carnival (held during February or March), the local populace re-enacts an 1194 revolt by the people against a cruel count and his troops. The original revolt was conducted with stones, but today, the citizenry have smartly taken to instead using the oranges that exceed the country’s yearly production quota. Some locals really re-enact the scene enthusiastically, so if you happen to attend, don’t forget to duck.

• In the spring, India celebrates the Holi Festival of Colors. This “colorful” festival was re-created in the 2006 independent film, “Outsourced” (the inspiration for a similarly named NBC sitcom last year). All the colors of the rainbow are tossed around in powders that men and women throw at each other. In addition, people pitch buckets of water on each other, making for a messy good time. These playful activities are accompanied by dancing and the frenzied beating of drums. This festival has political and socio-economic significance as well, since it marks one of the only times where one sees men and women of various social castes mixing in Indian society.

• Thailand’s Songkran Festival, held April 13-15, is part of the Thai New Year and is a very wet tradition. While “Songkran” is a Sanskrit word that in Thai refers to the influence of the sun on certain Zodiac signs, it is water that captures the attention and imagination of all the locals.

Get it off your chest.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“In Time” (PG-13) -- In a bluish near-future science-fiction world, time is literally money. Wealthy people stay young and live forever, while the working sods have to scrape by just to make it another day. It’s a nifty idea for a Bonnie and Clyde, upset-the-system type of adventure. Too bad the whole thing falls flat and runs out of time while the film is still rolling. Justin Timberlake plays a blue-collar guy who gains a windfall when a wealthy man decides he’s sick of immortality and gives all of his time to Timberlake, thus killing himself. By this point, the movie has just begun to preach loud and clear through its thin metaphor for wealth inequality. The movie gets dull as the plot limps along, the characters stay flat and the heavy-handed speeches continue.

“The Thing” (R) -- In a remote facility in Antarctica, a few cabin-fevered researchers find something not of this world. A grotesque shape-shifting alien is making its way though their roster, and nobody knows whom to trust or where to run. It’s a prequel that plays it so close to the original that it’s almost a remake. For a pointless prequel, it sure tries its best. Unfortunately for this Thing, John Carpenter’s 1982 “The Thing” casts a long, cold shadow as one of the best American horror films. The thing about the new Thing (sorry folks), is that it has thrills based around gore and things jumping out at you, but it never learns to walk on its own, and instead relies on mimicking the exact characteristics of the original without getting the real hang of it.

“The Big Year” (PG) -- Jack Black, Owen Wilson and Steve Martin are three comedy steeds hitched to this cart that goes nowhere. This lukewarm flick about competitive bird watchers has its three-dimensional characters, but the comedy never really takes flight. It’s on a small-scale, but there is some enjoyment in the movie if you’re patient and gentle-tempered with it.

“Drive” (R) -- Ryan Gosling stars in this stylized thriller about a getaway driver who gets involved in a job gone wrong. Gosling’s man-of-few-words protagonist smolders opposite Carey Mulligan, the young mother next door who can never be rid of the trouble caused by her convict husband. The taciturn motorist takes an interest in pulling her out of danger, and becomes the target of some bad guys on the take.Don’t assume this is another coulda-been-

Statham, generic car-chase flick. “Drive” has an original look, masterful pacing and intense violence all to the tune of a buttery-smooth, pitch-perfect soundtrack. If you can handle the visceral shocks and escalating tensions, then this is a wild ride of current, cool and unforgettable cinema.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The changes you’ve waited to see in your work situation might not be happening quite as quickly as you’d hoped. Although the pace is slow, it’s ongoing. Expect to hear news soon.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) You should be feeling very proud of the fine effort you’ve made to get that important project done. Now take some time out to celebrate with family and friends. You’ve earned it.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You’re close to reaching your objectives. That’s the good news. But be careful: Your aspects show lots of potential distractions looming. Stay focused and keep your eyes fixed on your goals.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Be careful not to let that suspicious Cancerian mind create a problem where none exists. What you might believe is an act of betrayal could be nothing more than a misunderstanding.LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Lion’s heart overflows with self-confidence. All you need to do is tap into it, and you’ll be able to handle any change that must be made regarding that recent surprise development.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The need to watch what you say becomes increasingly crucial this week. Be as temperate as you can with your comments and avoid arguments for the sake of controversy.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A longtime family problem presents new demands. But this time, you won’t have to go it alone: Someone else is asking to help share your responsibilities. Let it happen.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A period of feeling vulnerable is about to give way to a stronger, more self-confident aspect. Use this new strength to reaffirm promises you’ve made to others and yourself.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A creative dilemma stalls your progress. Instead of letting it raise your ire, use the time to re-examine your aims and, perhaps, come up with a new target.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your nimble will finds a way for you to work out those newly emerged problems plaguing your new project. Stay with it. The results will be well worth your efforts. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might feel overwhelmed at having to decide which new opportunity you should follow. Best advice: Check them all out and see which offers what you really want.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Continue to tread water before you even consider plunging into something that never seemed quite right. Top Tips When Moving With Pets

(NC)—Moving to a new home can be stressful for everyone involved, including your pets. “We often see homeowners who are anxious about their pet’s adjustment to a new home,” says Yvonne Ratigan, vice president at Royal LePage Canada. “By planning ahead, you can ensure your pet is happy and safe in your new home,” Ratigan says, offering these tips to help things go smoothly.Visit the vet. Schedule a visit with your veterinarian for a check-up and ensure all vaccinations are up to date. Use this time to arrange for copies of your pet’s records, and ask for a recommendation for a veterinarian in your new location. If your journey is a long one, ask for advice on how to care for your pet during transportation.Research by-laws and pet licensing in your new area. What are the requirements concerning domestic animals in your new area? To find out, contact the local Humane Society or an animal shelter run by the municipality. Ask about licensing and by-laws concerning the responsibilities of pet owners. Also check into the availability of leash-free areas for dogs in your new community.Special considerations for rural areas. If the area you are moving to is a rural one, be sure to learn the rights of farmers when neighbouring pets venture onto their property. Often, farmers have special privileges when it comes to protecting their livestock. An unleashed pet, who ventures onto a farmer’s property, could be considered a threat.Transitioning your pet to your new home. Take your dog for several walks each day to help him become familiar with the new area. Avoid walking the dog immediately before you plan to leave the home for errands or work. Plan to be home for a period of time after those initial walks, so that the dog associates the new area with a positive outcome. Leaving immediately after your walk can increase anxiety. Cats on the other hand, should remain inside for several weeks until they become comfortable in the new home. Cats are known to run away to search for their old home, so safe containment indoors is paramount.More moving tips can be found online at

HOLIDAYS (continued):

• We’ve featured the world’s biggest tomato, orange and water fights so far, so why not shine a light on the world’s biggest tug-of-war? The Naha Tug-of-War takes place on October 11 in the middle of the Naha Festival, one of the largest celebrations in Okinawa, Japan. One of the region’s biggest thoroughfares, Highway 58, is shut down so that tens of thousands can congregate to decide which of the two masses can pull the other 30 meters. This is no simple length of rope, mind you. Made of rice straw, the rope is so large that no single set of hands could possibly hold it. In fact, it’s so big that a series of smaller ropes are attached all over its surface to accommodate the swarm of hands there to participate. Seen from a distance, it might look as if a massive synthetic snake several blocks long and taller than a car had taken control of the freeway. Fortunately, it’s just a Guinness-World-Record-breaking competition in a country famous for its fascinating customs.

• An ex-slave is the focus of the African holiday called Matilda Newport Day, celebrated on December 1 in Liberia. Elderly Matilda Newport was a brave lady who changed the fate of an entire country with a single act. A colony of freed American slaves was attempting to form its own nation in Equatorial Africa. In a battle between the colonists and hostile indigenous tribes, the tribes were winning, and all but a few colonists abandoned the fight. That’s when Matilda approached a cannon that, having been forsaken by colonists, had drawn the attention of tribesmen. Thinking her harmless, they took no notice when she dropped a burning coal into the curious machine. When it went off, it frightened the invaders so much that they fled, making Newport a most improbable war hero.

◆ Toothpaste works well as a silver polish. Wet your silver, plop a little non-gel toothpaste on it and rub gently to clean. Rinse well, and let it shine!

◆ A great hint from Mary R. of Duluth, Ga.: “If the kids are drawing with felt markers and their hands get covered with ink, don’t worry. Just spray their hands down with hairspray, and then wipe off the ink with a paper towel. Don’t forget to wash their hands afterward!”

◆ “Dip your toothbrush in baking soda before you add toothpaste when brushing your teeth. You get used to the taste, but the extra scrub really gets your teeth clean, and it’s very inexpensive to use.”

◆ Have clumped-up sugar in the canister? No worries. To keep sugar from hardening, add a slice of bread to the container from time to time, and leave it there a day before removing.

◆ Use this quick fix for oily hair. Rub a small amount of cornstarch into the oily areas of your hair. The cornstarch will soak up the dirt and oil; you just brush it out.

◆ A reader from Michigan wonders: How can I keep from having “static head,” especially when using a hat? The answer: You probably already have the remedy in your pocket or purse -- a tube of lip balm. Rub some on your palms, then run your palms over your hair.

Hungarian Chicken Goulash

Goulash and Hungary are truly synonymous in the cooking world. My version offers a new twist on an old favorite by simply substituting cooked chicken (or turkey, if you prefer) for the traditional beef. Enjoy!

1/2 cup finely chopped onion1 cup frozen cut green beans, thawed1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauceSugar substitute to equal 1 tablespoon sugar, suitable for cooking1 tablespoon paprika2 cups hot, cooked noodles, rinsed and drained1 1/2 cups diced, cooked chicken breast

1. In a large skillet sprayed with butter-flavored cooking spray, saute onion and green beans for 5 minutes. Stir in undrained tomatoes, tomato sauce, sugar substitute and paprika. Add noodles and chicken. Mix well to combine.2. Lower heat and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Makes 4 (1 1/2 cups each) servings.

Each serving equals: About 259 calories, 3g fat, 24g protein, 34g carb., 735mg sodium, 4g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 2 Meat, 2 Vegetable, 1 1/2 Starch.

Socks & ToesSocks is almost identical to her brother Toes, with the main quick reference being that she has perfect little white boots on each foot. Socks is fully litter trained and learning to stay on the floor although food became very important to her after being abandoned, so at first you had best be aware of what gremlins can get in to. She made immediate friends with my resident cat and large dog and loves to be petted, rolling over for a tummy rub or giving your hand a head butt. Socks and her two brothers were abandoned so initially they were all a little frightened of the world but very quickly decided the humans are the best people on earth, warm laps to lie in are fantastic and life is generally jpretty good. She relaxes her whole body when picked up although it doesnt take long before she wants down

to play. She is a sweet and loving little girl who will love to spend time on some lucky person’s lap.

Toes is the twin brother to Socks, and named Toes as it looks as if he has little black toes peeking out of white socks. Toes is fully litter trained and learning to stay on the floor although food became very important to him after being abandoned so at first you had best be aware of what gremlins can get in to. Although he was a bit slower than his sister and other brother to decide that humans are the best thing ever, he now comes up asking for pets and will

roll over right away for belly rubs. He is fine with my resident cat and large dog and is sweet and inquisitive but will call to his sister when they are separated for an extended length of time so I would like to see them go to a forever home together.

Fun Games to Keep Minds Sharp in 2012I resolve to build a better brain in 2012. If you’re like me, the “think tank” can always use a little exercise, and it’s easier and definitely more fun to keep a resolution when you share the challenge with friends and family. That’s where games come in. Here are a couple of fun brain games to put smiles on faces and help everyone in the family keep their mind sharp.

TAKE TWO!When you don’t have time for a standard Scrabble board game, try this speedy version that uses the letter tiles without the board. My daughter taught it to us years ago, and our family is still hooked! Here’s how:Turn all the Scrabble tiles upside down in the center of the table. Each player takes seven tiles, turns them over and quickly creates words in his own crossword arrangement in front of him. Each word must connect with another, as it would on a Scrabble board. As soon as one of the players has used all seven tiles to form his words, he shouts, “Take 2.” Each player now draws two more tiles and attempts to work them into their arrangements. Continue this fast-paced play with each player drawing two tiles when someone shouts, “2.” As the game progresses, players may rearrange their words as they work in the new letters. When all tiles are gone from the center, the game proceeds until one

player has used up all of his letters. Count individual scores by adding up the points printed on each of the letters for all words formed. Deduct points for tiles not used. Highest score wins.

I-SPY MEMORY GAMEPull out your kitchen junk drawer, gather family members around and say, “Ready, Set, Go!” Quietly study the contents for 20 seconds. Hide the drawer, and ask everyone to write a list of items they saw. Designate an amount of time for writing, depending on ages of your kids. When time is up, read off your answers, and the longest list wins. For another round, try other storage areas, such as a tackle box, sewing basket or your desk drawer when kids visit your office.
