This week, Tidbits looks at rain, snow, wind and storms, bringing you the best and worst of several weather conditions from around the world. • “Rain, rain, go away” might be something the residents of Mawsynram, India, want to say. It’s the wettest place on earth, receiving over 36 feet (11 m) of rainfall every year. Antofagasta, Chile, on the other hand, receives less than a tenth of a millimeter of rain per year, and many years, receives none at all. • The community of Bagdad, California, had no rain for 767 days between October of 1912 and November of 1914. That’s two years and 37 days! • You may have heard of Chicago referred to as the “Windy City,” but it’s not the windiest city in America. That distinction belongs to Blue Hill Observatory, Massachusetts, with an average annual wind speed of 15.4 mph. Second place belongs to Dodge City, Kansas, with Amarillo, Texas, at No. 3. Chicago isn’t even in the top ten! About 27 percent of weather-reporting stations average higher annual wind speeds than Chicago. turn the page for more!

¥ The word “avocado” is derived from a South Ameri-can Indian word that means “testicle.”

¥ When the miniskirt was introduced to the world in the 1960s, the reaction was swift and often harsh. Women who wore them in theMalagasy Republic were sen-tenced to 10 days in jail. Congolese police arrested 300 women for wearing the new style, and Egyptian lawbrandedthegarmentasindecent.InCaracas,Venezuela, the clergy got involved; churches admonished women to give up their minis or “be condemned to hell.” Perhaps the seeming overreaction wasn’t entirely unjustified, considering the effect the miniskirt had in some places. It was reported that two women wearing minis caused a two-hourtrafficjamindowntownCairo,anda63-year-oldmaninRioDeJaneirowassentencedtothreedaysin jail after biting the legs of the miniskirt-clad woman seated next to him on a bus.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Moneyball” (PG-13)-- The nuts and bolts of man-aging a baseball team might seem like a criminally dulltopic,butinanadmirablelaboroflove,BradPittanddirectorBennetMillerturnitintoataleofchal-lenging conventions and revolutionizingAmerica’sfavoritepastime.BasedonthestoryofOaklandA’smanagerBillyBeane(Pitt),“Moneyball”isasurpris-ingly funny and relentlessly engaging story of how somebody changed the game without setting foot on thefield. While the characters are talking about team budgets andplayerstats,PittandJonahHill(yes,he’sase-rious actor in this one) humanize the mathematicswithout getting in the way of the story. It’s an under-dog story without the cheese, and a true-life baseball story that you don’t have to be a “SportsCenter” ad-dict to appreciate.

“Killer Elite”(R)--JasonStatham,RobertDeNiroandCliveOwen serveup a gritty actionflickwiththat magical mixture of thrilling and forgettable. Danny (Statham) is an ex-special forces kinda guy whoteamsupwithhismentor,Hunter(DeNiro)totake down Clive Owen’s underground badguy soci-ety. That’s as coherent as the plot gets -- or needs to be. For a no-brainer night of tough guys and ex-plosions, “KillerElite” is adecent actionflick thatwon’t disappoint, unless you want to see De Niro in anything more than an extended cameo.

“Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season” (TV-MA) -- If you haven’t been watching or you don’t subscribe toHBO, take this chance to checkout this rich series. Set in Atlantic City at the onset of Prohibition, the show follows “Nucky” Thompson, theremorselessracketeerplayedbySteveBuscemi.“The Sopranos” is so 1990s, but it’s not too late to jump on this worthwhile bandwagon.

DOG OF THE WEEK“What’s Your Number?”(R)--AllyDarling(AnnaFerris) is a city girl with a ridiculous name who has had a string of ridiculous lovers. A staggering amount of comedy talent is weighed down by the most inane, predictable, slapdash rom-com script ever put together. Andy Samberg and Joel McHaleareamongthewastedfunnymeninbitroles.Anna Ferris is the most tragic of all; she’s charming, cuteandfunny, butjustcan’tseemtofindthatspecialmovie that will make it all happen.

Inside the NEW Walmart Supercenter at Freemont Village

Heather McCormick owns Spic 'n Span House Cleaning Services. She started the com-pany on a lark while on a teaching hiatus and it has grown to include more than 200 cus-tomers and an enthusiastic "crew" only too eager to "make your day easier".

Time-pressed moms and busy professionals are outsourcing their household chores...and who can blame them? But Tri-City women (and men) aren't just letting anybody into their home. If they had their choice they'd pick a friend...or Mary Poppins...or even a super nanny...someone both efficient and no-nonsense, brisk yet caring...someone, well like Heather McCormick.

McCormick has built her business on trust with her customers and rec-ognizes that each "clean" is different . We've extended services to in-clude school pick ups, laundry...even meal preparations, said McCor-mick. You have to get to know your customer and offer whatever service that will make their day... even their life easier. It's all about listening to our customers.

Along with weight gain, emotional eating can ignite a psyco-logical warfare in the mind. Feeling out of control when eating, and then feeling guilty for not being able to control it. Eating when you are not hungry, for comfort when sad, anxious, stressed, or bored can easily escalate to something more serious and difficult to control. Seeking professional help to re-learn destructive behaviors around food and restriction, can identify road blocks and uncover deeper emotional issues preventing weight loss.

(NC)—Planning a winter vacation is almost as much fun as the vacation itself, especially for us heat-starved Canadians. If taking a winter vacation is on your to-do list this winter, here are some tips from the Canadian Consumer Handbook, producedbyprovincial, territorialand federal governments to help consumers make informed decisions:

Research your destination. Check out www.voyage.gc.ca from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to get critical information for Canadian travellers such as travel warnings and contact information for Canadiangovernmentofficesabroad.

Choose a travel agent wisely. Travel agents can take a lot of the stress out of vacation planning. They often have access to information that many consumers don't, but be aware that not every province or territory requires that travel agents be licensed or registered. Ask if your agent has completed a training program, how much he or she has travelled, how many years the company has been in business and if the company belongs to a professional association.

Five ways to plan your winter vacation safely

and economicallyProtect the payment you have made. When you are paying in advance for a trip, think about how your money is protected in case the travel agent or one of the travel suppliers that are part of your package (e.g., airline, hotel or resort) goes out of business. Some, but not all, provinces have pro-grams that protect your prepaid money in such cases. Also, if you pay by credit card, your credit card provider may be able to offer some protec-tions against services that are not supplied.

Be carefulwhen buying travel online. Many ofthe issues described above about travel agents alsoapplytobuyingonline.Beforeyoubuy, thinkabout how reputable the company is, and what the protections are in case some or all of the services cannot be provided. Also note that an online com-pany based outside of your province or Canada is not necessarily subject to the same regulations or requirements as a company in this country. As a result,itmaybemoredifficulttoobtainredress.Alwaysreadthefineprintbeforeyoubuy.Someoffers might include significant restrictions onmodificationsor cancellations.Checkwithyourprovincialorterritorialconsumeraffairsofficeortravel industry association about rules that apply where you live.

Identify your insurance needs. When you travel outside Canada your health care costs are not cov-ered by provincial health insurance so make sure you obtain the right kind and amount of insurance for you and your family. Insurance may also cov-er things like trip cancellation and lost luggage so research the various policies.

Understand your role in safety and security.Transport Canada and the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority have tips on passenger and baggagescreeningwhichyoucanfindintheCa-nadianConsumerHandbookunder“travel”.

OLD WIVES’ TALESLots of “wisdom” has been passed down fromgeneration to generation that isn’t necessarily the truth. Check to see how many of these old wives’ tales you take as gospel!•Everyone’smothersaidthatgoingoutsidewith

wet hair will bring on a cold. Actually, viruses cause colds, and viruses tend to spread more easily indoors where people tend to congregate a bit more during cold weather. And will your eyes really stay that way if you cross them? Not at all! The eye disorder Strabismus, something that occurs in 4 percent of U.S. children, isresponsible for that.

•Didyourmomalsotellyouthatswallowedgumtakes seven years to digest? While there are ingredients in gum that the body can’t digest, the wad moves through your digestive system and is eliminated within hours, or at the most, days.Largeamountsofswallowedgumcan, onrare occasions, cause an intestinal blockage.

•In the old dayswhen you burned your hand, most likely your mother smeared butter on it. Greasy substances actually hold in the heat, makingthesituationworse.Runningyourhandunder cold water or using a cool cloth reduces the heat and can reduce the damage to the skin. Applying juice from an aloe vera plant is also a wise choice.

•Can coffee stunt a child’s growth? No, notreally, but that doesn’t make it a healthy choice. Too much caffeine in a child’s diet can hinder the absorption of calcium and other nutrients.

• Ifyou’reworriedthatallowingyourchildrentoplay with toads will give them warts, remember that warts are caused by a virus that toads neither carry nor pass on.

• Manyoldwives’talesarerelatedtowomenandtheir babies. For example, if a pregnant woman has frequent heartburn throughout the nine months, her baby will be born with a full head of hair. If that baby has light brown birthmarks, the mother drank too much coffee during

her pregnancy. And who needs expensive ultrasounds to determine a baby’s gender? Folklorehasotherwaysoffiguringitout, suchas suspending a wedding band from a thread. If the ring moves in a circular motion, the baby is a girl, whereas if it moves in a straight line or side to side, a boy is forthcoming. If the mother-to-be craves salty foods, it’s a boy, while cravings for sweets and fruit indicate a girl. Moving gracefully throughout pregnancy is a sign of a girl, while becoming clumsy means a boy is on the way.

•Gotanitch?Oldwives’wisdomsaysitchyfeetindicate you’ll soon be traveling, while an itchy nose means you’re about to kiss a fool. If the palm of your right hand itches, you’ll receive money soon, while an itchy left hand means you’ll lose some.

•Don’t worry about spicy foods giving youan ulcer. While they may irritate an existing one, they don’t bring them on. Sixty percent of peptic ulcers are the result of a bacterial infection. Still others are caused by overuse of pain medications.
