    TIDBITS GETS MISTY WITH SOME

    MAGNIFICENT WATERFALLSby Patricia L. Cook

Two requirements for waterfalls to occur are water and an elevation gradient. Numerous wa-terfalls are considered natural wonders and are sought out as vacation destinations. Height and water volume produce the most spectacular falls. Lets explore a few.NiagaraFalls isactuallyacollectionof three

    TIDBITS REMEMBERS OUR FAVORITE

    CARTOONS, PART TWOby Kathy Wolfe

This week, Tidbits continues reminiscing about our best-loved animated series. We hope we hit on your Saturday morning favorite!

WhoknowshowacartoonwithadognamedToo Much would have fared? Probably not as well as Scooby Doo, the name Hanna and Barbera opted to use for the lovable Great Dane. Originally, Daphne was to be known as Kelly, Fred as Geoff, Velma as Linda, and Shaggy as W.W. The program was slated to be called W-Whos S-S-Scared with a sheepdog named Too Much. As the CBS producer was reviewing the artwork, he was listening to a Frank Sinatra recording of Strangers in the Night, and the lyrics reminded him of Scooby-dooby-doo. The sheepdog was axed and the Great Dane was in.

DoyourecognizethenamesofLazy,Clumsy,Brainy, Harmony, Greedy and Jokey? No, theyre not part of the Seven Dwarfs, they are the Smurfs, those blue-hued creatures created by a Belgian cartoonist named Peyo. Although theywerefirstseenin1958,theydidntappearin North America until 1981 when the series was picked up by NBC. Papa Smurf and his crew won several Emmy Awards before their cancellation in 1990.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Avoid adding to the tension around you. Even a well-meant reaction against something you perceive as unfair could be misunderstood. Let things calm down, and then talk about it.

TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Its a good time for romance for unattached Bo-vines, and a good time for reinforcing the bonds between partners. Childrens needs are important during the latter part of the week.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A compliment from a surprising source sends you wafting way up into the clouds, where -- sorry to say -- your view of whats going on is ob-scured. Come on down and face some reality.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Even a family-loving person like you sometimes can feel youre at the end of the line with conten-tious kinfolk. But things can work out. Remember that its better to talk than walk.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) A job-related move might hold more positive sur-prises than youd expected. Go into it with con-fidence, and look for all the advantages it offers. Then decide what youll do with what you find.

VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Driving yourself too hard to get something done on a deadline you set up can backfire. Ease into a more realistic finish date, and add more breaks to your work schedule.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your sense of humor can brighten any dark period, and your laughter can dispel those gray clouds swirling around you. The weekend pres-ents a surprising but welcome change.

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Be careful about the words you use, especially in touchy situations. The old Chinese saying that the spoken word is silver, but the unspoken gold could well apply here.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some facts could emerge to shed light on unre-solved past problems. What you learn also might help explain why a once-warm relationship sud-denly cooled down.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Dont let your pride get in the way of checking into what could be a great new opportunity. Get the facts first, and worry about procedure and protocol later.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A health problem in the family might have other relatives assuming that, as before, youll take over the health-care duties. Surprise them and insist they share in the caretaking.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A series of changes can be unsettling, but in the long run, it can pay off with new perspectives on what you plan to do. Keep your mind open to the possibilities that might well lie ahead.

BORN THIS WEEK: You might be under a royal sign, but you have a wonderful way of em-bracing everyone as an equal.

    Thought of the week

It was American actress and comedian Lily Tomlin who made the following sage obser-vation:Maninventedlanguagetosatisfyhisdeep need to complain.

According to Henry Heimlich, the inventor of the abdominal thrust technique known as the Heimlich Maneuver, the food upon which people most commonly choke is peanut butter straightoutofthejar.

Astronauts on the International Space Station see the sun rise every 90 minutes. Youve probably heard that Eskimos have 50 words for different types of snow, but you might not realize that their language doesnthaveawordforjustplainsnow. You might recall Glenn Ford, an actor from HollywoodsGoldenEra, from such films as3:10toYuma,BlackboardJungleandTheBig Heat. You probably didnt know, though, that when he was born in Quebec he was named

Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford. The inspiration for his stage name was the town of Glenford, Canada. Those who study such things say that every day in the world, 62 square miles of land becomes desert. When groups of shrimp end up with too few males to sustain the population, some of the females turn into males. Michael Crichton is best known as an author and screenwriter, and most of his fans are aware of the fact that he was a medical doctor, as well. Its inter-esting to note, however, that as an undergraduate studenthemajoredinanthropology. If youre like 80 percent of the world, you will experience some kind of back trouble at least once in your lifetime. DONT GET WET! (continued):

The worlds wettest spot, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey, is Mt. Waialeale, Hawaii, where an average of 451 inches (1,146 cm) of rain falls each year. More than 642 inches (1631 cm) fell from July 1947 to July 1948!

If you live in the continental U. S. and see rain outside your window at this moment, maybe you live in the vicinity of the nine major weather stations with over 60 inches (152.4 cm) of precipitation annually. Mt. Washington, NH, 101.9 in. (258.8 cm) and Quillayute, WA, 101.7 in. (258.3 cm) lead the pack; and the others are: Astoria, OR; Mobile, AL; Pensacola, FL; New Orleans, LA; Tallahassee, FL; Baton Rouge, LA; and West Palm Beach, FL.

While the wettest areas in the continental U.S. are scattered across the country, Canadas wettest areas are all in British Columbia. The fish hatchery at Henderson Lake received 908.2 centimeters (nearly 30 ft.) of precipitation in 1997! Hartley Bay measures an annual average of 454.9 centimeters (nearly 15 feet).

If you live in a high desert climate, you are probably familiar with wet snow and dry snow. The average snow-to-water ratio is 10:1; so that ten inches of melted snow equals one inch of water. Wet snow can have a ratio of 5:1 and dry snow can be extreme with a ratio at or exceeding 30:1. If you want to make a snowman or have a snowball fight, wet snow is best!

Tidbits hopes you are having a great winter; with wet, dry or even no snow!
