How do we measure up to the feats of others? This week, Tidbits investigates the age of these achievers at the time of their accomplishments. • Mary, Queen of Scots became Queen of Scotland when
she was just six days old, upon the death of her father. Scotland was ruled by regents throughout her childhood. When Mary was 16, she married the French Dauphin Francis, who became King Francis II when she was 17. The union lasted only two years, as Francis died in 1560, and Mary returned to Scotland. Her life did not have a happy ending, as she was beheaded for plotting the assassination of her cousin Queen Elizabeth I of England.
• Somegolfersmightnevershoota48fornineholesofgolf, but Tiger Woods achieved this feat at age 3. He had already been featured in Golf Digest by the age of 5.
• JudyGarlandmadeherfirststageappearanceatage2,when she joined her singing siblings in an act called The GummSisters.Shewenton toafilmcareerspanningover40years,and is immortalizedasDorothy inTheWizard of Oz, although she made more than 35 other films. Despite her extraordinary talent, Judy wasunable to deal with the demands of fame, and turned to drugs and alcohol. She perished from an overdose of barbituratesatage47.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat “Sandy” has had a weight problem for a few years now. His veterinarian recommended giving him less food and more exercise, but it hasn’t helped. What else can I do? -- Craig in Grand Rapids, Michigan
DEAR CRAIG: First, take Sandy in for a complete health evaluation at the vet -- if one hasn’t been done lately -- just to rule out any underlying issues. Then, if his health is fine, start re-evaluating his regime.
Like humans, pets can fall into routines where they get far less exercise and eat much more than an owner may es-timate. Many pets also are masters at sneaking food when we’re not looking. So, here are some tips to help jump-start Sandy’s weight loss:
* Follow the v e t ’ s r e c o m -mended feeding amounts exactly. Use a measuring cup.
Fat Cat
* If you don’t get a recommended amount, follow this guideline for indoor cats: about 20 calories per pound of weight. So, a 10-pound cat needs about 200 calories per day to maintain that weight, while a 15-pound cat needs about 300 calories per day. Lower those calorie amounts slightly -- about 40 fewer calo-ries per day -- for weight loss.
* Double your pet’s activity time. Do you swing a toy in front of your cat for 5-10 minutes each evening while your TV shows are on? Make it 20 minutes.
* Reset the routine for both of you. Carve out play or exercise time in the morning and evening.
* Provide your cat plenty of distractions from the food bowl: catnip-laced toys, scratching posts, etc.

• Last month’s Earth Day got me think-ing about how many plastic bottled bev-erages my family goes through. I have found six glass reusable bottles that can
be run through the dishwasher, and I store them in the refrigerator in a cardboard six-pack holder. I still want the convenience of grabbing a bottle of water from the fridge, but I feel better knowing that I’m not contributing to a plastic problem.” -- JoAnn
• “If you love to burn candles as much as I do, consider storing them in the refrigerator for a day or so before burning them. I swear, it makes them burn evenly. Someone told me this once, and I tried it and have been doing it ever since. No more crooked candles.” -- J.L. in Tennes-see
• When traveling for more than a few days, stick your plants into the bathtub with a little bit of water. They’ll soak it up, and you won’t have to
have someone come over and water your plants. This will only work for a week at most, though.” -- J.M. in Louisiana
• Kitchen remodels can be expensive, but when your kitchen isn’t us-able, that’s even more of an expense. Instead of opting for takeout food, set up an alternate kitchen to save money. A microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot and a small dorm-style fridge can take care of a lot of your needs in the short term.
• Planning on putting in some new plants or sprucing up your garden this spring? Check with your town’s yard-waste recycling center about free mulch or compost. Many facilities offer these to their residents.

Friday, May 8, in Ortonville, Paul Ragan broke the dis-cus record with a throw of 136’ 7”. Combellick is also very close to breaking the 300m hurdle school record; he is only .47s off.
Shout out to the track coaches Mr. Far-well and Zeke Johnson for all the work they put in helping the Tracksters become greyhounds and quarter horses. Big thanks to Coach Chris-tensen too, for coming out and help-ing the throwers in his spare time.

A Memorable Memorial Day
Memorial Day was created to remember those who died while serv-ing our country. The federal holiday originated after the American Civil War to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers. Today, the hol-iday commemorates all of those who served in the American military who sacrificed their lives for our country. It is observed every year on the last Monday of May. Originally, Memorial Day was known as Decoration Day because the graves of soldiers were cleaned and beautified with flowers and flags.
Moina Michael is credited with the idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died. In 1915, she was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to raise money for charities serving soldiers in need.
In 1922, the VFW began to sell poppies and expanded the program to selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. In 2000, Congress established the “National Moment of Remembrance,” which asks that at 3 p.m. local time, all Americans “To voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a Moment of Remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to ‘Taps.’”
Memorial Day also is considered to be the unofficial start of summer. Family gatherings featuring barbe-qued or grilled meats and vegetables
are a traditional part of the celebra-tion. Try my recipe for Cheeseburger Sliders with Sriracha Mayo Sauce for a spicy spin on a holiday favorite.
CHEESEBURGER SLIDERS
1 pound ground beef (80/20 blend) 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons steak sauce 1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon butter 1 small onion, finely chopped 1 1/2 ounces Munster cheese, thin- ly sliced, cut into 1 1/2-inch squares 3 red tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick 8 three-inch mini brioche buns, split in halfFor the Sriracha Mayo Sauce: 1 cup mayonnaise 1/2 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt 1 1/2 tablespoons Sriracha 1 teaspoon honey or agave syrup 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepperTo make the burgers:
Gently combine the beef, 2 tea-spoons of Worcestershire sauce, steak sauce, parsley, salt and pepper in a bowl. Set aside.
Heat the oil and butter in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and the remaining teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce and cook, stir-ring occasionally, until translucent, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool completely. To make the sauce:
In a small bowl, combine the may-
onnaise, sour cream or Greek yogurt, Sriracha, honey or agave, lemon juice, salt and pepper until well-com-bined. Set aside.
To make the sliders:Heat grill to medium-high. Gently
form meat mixture into 8 one-inch-thick patties. Grill 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare. Top with a square of cheese after flipping the burger. Close grill for 30-60 seconds to melt the cheese. Warm buns on the grill. Place hamburger on the bun; top with the onions, tomato slice, Sriracha mayo sauce and the remaining bun.

USS South Dakota (pt. 2 of 4) pt. 3 next issueCatalina patrol bombers sighted a Japanese carrier
force at noon on October 25, 1942, and TF 61 steamed northwest to intercept it. Early the next morning, when all carrier forces were within striking range, a Japanese snooper spotted the American force, triggering the Battle of Santa Cruz. SOUTH DAKOTA and the ENTERPRISE group were approximately 10 miles from the HORNET group when the air battle began.
The first enemy attack was concentrated against HORNET. At 1045, SOUTH DAKOTA was operating near ENTERPRISE to provide protective fire from her numer-ous antiaircraft guns when their group was attacked by dive bombers. Approximately an hour later, about 40 tor-pedo planes struck at the two ships. A third aerial assault,
made by dive bombers and torpedo planes, came in at 1230. SOUTH DAKOTA sustained a 500-pound bomb hit on top of her number one turret. When the action was broken off that evening, the American forces re-tired toward Noumea, New Caledonia, with the battle-ship credited with downing 26 enemy planes.
At 0414 on 30 October, while avoiding a submarine contact, SOUTH DAKOTA and USS MAHAN (DD 364) collided, causing damage to both ships. MAHAN's bow was turned to port and crumpled to frame 14, and a fire, soon brought under control, started in her forward hold. Both ships continued to Noumea where USS VESTAL (AR 4) repaired SOUTH DAKOTA's collision and battle damage.

• When Franklin was 36, he devised a metal-linedfireplacewithrearbafflesforbetterairflow.Placedinthe middle of the room, this cast iron stove radiated heat in all directions and kept the room warm hours after thefirewentout. Inaddition togreaterheat, the Franklin stove produced less smoke than an openfireplaceandusedlesswood.
• Serving as Philadelphia’s postmaster for 16 years led to Franklin’s invention of an improved odometer. It began with his curiosity as to how far he was traveling by carriage between Philadelphia andBoston, carryingouthispostmasterduties.Heattached a geared device to the rear wheel of his carriage, measuring the revolutions made by the wheel. Every 400 revolutions caused the deviceto register ahead onemile (1.6 km). He used hisinvention to streamline the mail delivery, measuring the distances between postal stations to develop moreefficientmailroutes.
• Franklin was even responsible for a musicalinstrument called the hydrocrystalophone, which in simpler terms was known as the glass armonica. His armonica consisted of a series of glass bowls of graduatedsizefloatinginatrayofwater.Thevaryingsizes produced different musical tones based on the sizeofthebowl.Beforelong, itwasbeingplayedin
concert halls across Europe and America, and even MozartandBeethovencomposedmusicforit.
• At79,Franklinwasstillcomingupwithnewideas.Suffering from presbyopia, he conceived the idea of “double spectacles,” which allowed him to see distant objects as well as see close work. He hired his optician to use lenses from two sets of glasses, cutting them horizontally, and putting them into frames. It was the birth of bifocals!
• Benjamin Franklin did not patent a single one ofhis inventions, choosing to gift them to the public. Inhiswords,“Aswebenefitfromtheinventionsofothers, we should be glad to share our own, freely and gladly.”
