Publisher's Corner by Sean AtheyTop 'o the morning to ya!!

The "Wearing of the Green" is almost upon us. For me it is a two-fold holiday. On one hand it is a cele-bration of my Irish heritage, and also a great sign that Spring will return and these dreary winter days are al-most behind us... for another year.

As you can guess by my first name, I have Irish blood, but my last name has an even better tie to Ireland. The Tribes of Galway (Treibheanna na Gaillimhe) were fourteen merchant families who domi-nated the political, commercial, and social life of the city of Galway in western Ireland between the mid-13th and late-19th centuries. (Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, Deane, Darcy, Lynch, Joyes (Joyce), Kirwan, Martin, Morris, Skerrett, Ffont and Ffrench.)

During the Irish Confederate Wars (1641–1653), Galway took the side of the Confed-erate Catholics of Ireland, and as a result the Tribes were punished following the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland. The Tribes lost much of their power within Galway city after English Parliamentarians took over the Galway Corporation in 1654. Because of the uncertain response to this dilemma by the merchant families, Crom-well's forces referred to them by the derogatory name, "The Tribes of Galway", which they themselves later adopted as a mark of defiance.

In Galway, the Athy's were one of the first to build stone structures in that city. (that may explain why half my family seems to be in the con-struction business!). In records dated 1320, The Abbey, the Red Earl's House and Athy Castle were the only stone structures in Galway.

Athy was one "tribe", and, as immigration to America sped up, the name took many alternate spellings... Athey, Athie, Athee... but all de-rivatives of the original Athy.

So, as you celebrate St. Patrick's Day, be safe, have fun and Be Irish... at least for a day!

Irish Blessing: May you have warm words on a cold evening, a full moon on a dark night, and the road downhill all the way to your door.

St. Patrick was a gentlemanWho through strategy and stealthDrove all the snakes from Ireland.

Here's toasting to his health.

But not too many toastings Lest you lose yourself and then

The Legend of the Mighty Eagle The mighty eagle originates from the very beginning of time, even before this little town was formed. From that time a tiny eaglet developed into a majestic adult bird. It grew strong and courageous. With its mighty wings and keen eyesight it soared over the hills and valleys of northeast South Dakota to choose a territory for its

very own. It chose the little town known as Summit for its particular care, to watch and guide the young while they developed from little eaglets into mighty eagles.

Q: My family farm is in Iowa, and I have scouted for arrowheads ever since I was a youngster. I have several hundred in my collection, and wonder if you can recommend a good, basic reference book to help me identify the specimens I have. -- Ken, Davenport, Iowa

A: There are several excellent references, but one I think is exceptional is “Overstreet Indian Arrowheads: Identification and Price Guide” by Robert M. Overstreet and pub-lished by House of Collectibles. This guide is filled with life-size illustrations of arrow-heads grouped by nine geographic areas in the United States: Northeast, Eastern Seaboard, Gulf Coastal, Southern Central, Desert Southwest, Great Basin Westward, Northern High Plains, Northern Central and Eastern Central. Iowa is in the Northern Central region. In this guide, there are tips on grading and even an experts’ guide on how and where to pur-chase authentic relics.

• • •Q: I have inherited my older brother’s comic-book collection. I know nothing about vin-

tage comics. Can you recommend a good price guide that I can use to determine values? -- Anita, Mound City, Illinois

A: I have several comic-book references, but the two I keep checking are “Comic Book Checklist & Price Guide” by Maggie Thompson, Brent Frankenhuff and Peter Bickford (Krause, $19.99); and “The Standard Guide to Golden Age Comic Books” by Alex G. Mallow and Stuart W. Wells III (Krause, $19.99). Both books are thoroughly illustrated and accurately reflect the marketplace. As with most collectibles, condition is extremely important. For example, the first issue of Archie comics, which was published in 1942,

is valued at $25,000 in mint condition. In lesser condi-tion, it would worth only a fraction of that amount.

• “This tip is good for an inexpen-sive watch or a piece of jewelry that tends to rust or discolor on the skin-

facing side. Clean it well and “paint” the side facing your skin with clear nail polish.” -- M.T. in Alabama

• “Here is a fun idea for a baby shower, especially if you have a small group: Have a supply of baby onesies, fabric paint and fabric markers, and have guests personal-ize a onesie for the baby. They are so easy to create and so necessary for Mom and Dad.” -- T.B. in Florida

• If you want to make a message station for dry-erase notes, try this cheap and fun DIY trick: Grab a picture frame with a glass insert. Use a photo, pretty piece of pat-terned paper or a piece of your child’s artwork covered by a sheet of tracing paper in the frame. Hang on the wall. You can write on the glass with a dry-erase marker and erase as needed.

• Shower caps are an outstanding substitute for plastic wrap when covering a large plate or bowl. They are easily cleaned, super easy to use and can be found cheap at your local dollar store!

• “Do you have a toddler or preschooler who likes to lock him- or herself in the bathroom? This happened to us, and we found a great solution. We slipped a small sec-tion of pool noodle slit down the side over the door, high enough to be out of reach of little hands. The door simply won’t close (or slam!), but an adult can easily take it off if necessary. This has been a lifesaver, because we were about to take the doorknob off!” -- A.P. in Nevada

• For a fun magnet board, paint inexpensive burner cov-ers and mount on the wall. Since they’re metal, kitchen magnets will work easily.

ST CHARLES MASS TIME CHANGED TO SATURDAyS @ 5:30 PM (FEB 28TH- JUNE 27TH)

• It was Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw who made the follow-ing sage observation: “There is no sin-cerer love than the love of food.”

• You might be surprised to learn that the fastest flying insect is the dragonfly; it’s been clocked at speeds up to 35 mph.

• In Japan, a black cat crossing your path is considered to be good luck, not bad.

• If you have trouble getting along with your in-laws, you might dream of getting payback someday. A man named Charles Webb did just that -- on a grand scale. While in high school, Webb dated a girl named Eve; Eve’s mother, however, didn’t think Webb was good enough for her daughter and did everything she could to keep them apart. The two eventually got married, and Webb wrote the novel “The Grad-uate” ... yes, the one that was turned into a movie starring Dustin Hoffman. The character of the drunken, promis-cuous mother-in-law was based on the woman who’d tried to sabotage his relationship for years.

• When archaeologists discovered the tomb of King Tut, one of the ob-jects they found inside was a bronze razor -- and it was still sharp enough to use.

• President George Washington re-portedly was terrified at the thought of being buried alive. He insisted that his burial not take place until at least three days after his death, just to make sure he was really deceased.

• The starling is the world’s most common bird.
