• Water will stay 9 days in the atmosphere; 2 weeks in rivers; 10 years in the largest lakes; 3,000 years in the ocean; up to 10,000 years in deep groundwater; and 10,000 years in the polar icecap.

Well Hello My Friends!Just where do these summers go? Can

you believe our young ones are heading back to school already? Lynette and I are still getting used to the fact we don't have

kids in school... or in the house anymore! But, trust me, I will do my best to acclimate!

We have had a great time working on our back-yard garden this summer. It is a real relaxation time for me, helping those little seeds grow into beautiful plants that provide wholesome treats and put jars of delicious food on our shelves for the in-

evitable winter that is waiting for us. This year we tried some eggplants and they are turning out wonderfully. Since it is new to us, we have been researching many recipes to see what we can do with them. One of the more appetizing sounding ideas... although not too healthy... is to batter the slices and cook them like a fried green tomatoes, which we never had done before until an early frost left with bunch to do something with.

I have seen several Farmer's Markets across the area and know that there are some people out their that really know what they are doing as far as gardening. The tips and tricks abound when you talk to them... I really should write some of them down! One interesting thing I remember, was a older gentleman who swears by ground up egg shells and coffee grounds. He puts them in the hole before planting tomatoes - says it works wonders.... next year, I'm trying it.

Noteworthy InventionsROY PLUNKETT

• On April 6, 1938, chemist Dr. Roy Plunkett wasexperimentingwithcoolantgasesusedinrefrigeratorsand air conditioners at the DuPont laboratories inNewJersey.Fromthefreezerheremovedatankofexperimental gas he’d been working with, calledtetrafluoroethylene.Heexpected tofindacontainerof very cold gas, but when he turned the valve to let some gas out, nothing happened.

• He weighed the tank, which showed it should befullofgas.Hecheckedthevalve,butitworkedfine.Perplexed, he cut the tank in half to find outwhathappened to the gas. He was surprised to see the gas hadcongealedintoasolid,waxysubstance.

• Plunkett ran some tests. The new material wasimpervious to chemicals and heat; it did not absorb things and nothing absorbed it; it was colorless and odorless;andithadanextremelyhighmeltingpoint.

• Plunkett had accidentally discovered what ispopularlyknownastheslipperiestsubstanceonEarth,equivalenttotwoweticecubesrubbingagainsteachother in a warm room. The molecules of the substance are some of the largest molecules known.

• Three years after Plunkett’s accidental discovery,the process of manufacturing the substance was patented.Fouryearsafterthat,itbegantobesoldonthemarket,mostlyformilitaryapplicationsatfirst.

• Fifty years later Plunkett was inducted into the

Inventor’s Hall of Fame. Today the product hashundreds of uses. It’s used on windshield wiper blades, it’s in fingernail polish, it forms a scratch-resistant coating on eyeglasses, it covers cookware, it protects fabrics, and it covers lightbulbs to make them shatterproof. The list is nearly endless. What is it commonly known as? Answer on page 11

• Bill was one of the researchers working in theDuPontlabwhenTeflonwasinvented.Hecontinuedtoexperimentwithit,inventingmanyuses.However,theDuPontTeflonteamwasdisbandedin1957.Billbegged his bosses to let him continue to work with Teflon,butwasturneddown.

• HetookTeflonhomewithhim,experimentedwithitin his basement after work, and established his own company.HissonBobjoinedhim,andin1969theydiscoveredthatTeflonwouldstretchifitwasheatedand then pulled slowly. They wanted to stretch it into a fabric, but time after time – while heating it and pulling it slowly – they failed.

• Finallyinfrustration,Bobheateditandthenyanked

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You recently updated readers about ways to help pets, including volunteering at shelters. An-other place to volunteer is at an assisted-living, or senior-care, facility. Many residents have their pets and sometimes aren’t able to exercise them enough, and they appreciate someone to take their pets on walks or to help bathe them. There is even a need of “babysitting” if the owner goes in for a procedure. -- David P., via email

DEAR DAVID: That’s a great idea! While not all assisted-living facilities permit pets, many do, since they often have residential facilities in which the residents have varying levels of independence.

Most facilities have a volunteer coordinator; if not, there’s always an activities director. Contact information for a facility near you can be found on the Web or in the local phone book.

LEMON-DIJON POTATO SALADThis light, lemony potato salad uses Dijon mustard

and tarragon to give it a greater depth of flavor.

3 pounds red potatoes, cut into 1-inch chunks 1/4 cup white vinegar 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon freshly grated lemon peel Salt Pepper 1/3 cup light mayonnaise 1/3 cup plain yogurt 3 stalks celery, sliced 1/3 cup chopped parsley 1 tablespoon chopped tarragon

1. In 5-quart saucepot, combine potatoes with 1 tea-spoon salt and water to cover; heat to boiling on high, then cover and simmer 10 minutes or until tender.

2. In large bowl, whisk vinegar, oil, mustard, lemon peel and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Drain pota-toes; stir into bowl; cool.

3. In small bowl, whisk remaining ingredients; stir into potatoes. Cover and refrigerate. Makes 10 cups.
