Q: My Thursday nights just aren’t the same without “Community.” When will the show return, and will it be on Fridays, which is what I heard last? -- David S., via e-mail

A: NBC recently announced that “Community” -- which stars Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Donald Glover and Chevy Chase -- has ping-ponged back to its original Thursday night at 8/7c time slot, beginning Feb. 7. “Com-munity” takes the place of “30 Rock,” which will have concluded its final season by then. We’ll both have to wait patiently for 13 more episodes of one of the best, and most underrated, comedies on television today.

• • •Q: On your recommendation,

I watched Bill Pullman in Scott Turrow’s “Innocent,” which carried on the story of “Presumed Innocent” main character Rusty Sabich 20 years later, where he is accused of murdering his wife. I absolutely loved it, and it got me to thinking that in my opinion, Bill Pullman is under-utilized in Hollywood. Can you tell me what I can see him in next? -- Virginia F. in Connecticut

A: Beginning Thursday, Jan. 10, at 9:30/8:30c, Bill does a 180 from his “Innocent” role to star as the presi-dent of the United States in the NBC comedy “1600 Penn.” The series was co-created by Jason Winder, director for “Modern Family,” so I can only hope that some of that comic genius carries over to this new se-

ries. And Bill is no stranger to being the POTUS (see: “Independence Day”), nor is he averse to being funny. In fact, when I spoke with the star of the dark comedy “Mr. Wrong” earlier this year, he told me he was eager to get back into comedy if he got the right script.

• • •Q: My roommate told me that there is going to be a

new “Battlestar Galactica” movie on the Syfy channel. Is that true? If so, when? -- Harold W., Boston

A: “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome” is set to debut this March on Syfy, and stars Luke Pasqualino

and Ben Cotton. According to reps for Syfy, the film “takes place in the midst of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, the sentient robotic Cylons, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, gifted fighter pilot William Adama (Pasqualino), finds himself assigned to one of the most power-ful battlestars in the Colonial fleet: the Galactica.

Full of ambition and hungry for action, Adama quickly finds himself at odds with his co-pilot, the battle-weary officer Coker (Cotton).” The film already is airing in weekly seven-to-10-minute segments on the Machinima Prime YouTube channel for those who can’t wait until March,

as long as you don’t mind short segments with a week between airings.

• • •Q: I can’t stand the waiting! When will “Smash” be

back? --- Eric P., via e-mailA: You’ll have to wait just a little bit longer. The

musical melodrama returns to NBC on Feb. 5.

• On Dec. 1, 1830, French novelist Victor Hugo is due to turn in a draft of his book “Notre Dame de Paris” (“The Hunchback of Notre Dame”). Despite his contract, he instead wrote two plays, “Marion de Lorme” and “Her-nani,” and the book is not published until 1831.

• On Nov. 26, 1862, Oxford mathematician Charles Lut-widge Dodgson sends a handwritten manuscript called “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground” to 10-year-old Alice Liddell. Dodgson made up the story one day on a pic-nic, and Alice insisted he write it down. He published it under his nom de plume, Lewis Carroll, in 1865.

• On Nov. 28, 1914, the New York Stock Exchange reopens for bond trading after nearly four months, the longest stoppage in the exchange’s history. The out-break of World War I in Europe forced the NYSE to shut its doors on July 31, 1914.

• On Dec. 2, 1942, Enrico Fermi, Italian-born Nobel Prize-winning physicist, directs and controls the first nuclear chain reaction. He created a jury-rigged labo-ratory under the bleachers in Stagg Field at the Univer-sity of Chicago.

• On Nov. 30, 1954, the first modern instance of a mete-orite striking a human being occurs at Sylacauga, Ala., when an 8 1/2 pound me-teorite crashes through the roof of a house and into the living room, bounces off a radio, and strikes a woman on the hip. The victim suf-fered a nasty bruise.

• On Nov. 29, 1963, one week after President John F. Kennedy was fatally shot while riding in a motorcade in Dallas, President Lyndon Johnson establishes a spe-cial commission to investi-gate the assassination. Af-ter 10 months the Warren Commission report was released, concluding that there was no conspiracy.

I enjoy tossing a variety of spices in family meals, but I clearly hadn’t used mustard seeds in a while -- make that a long while. While cleaning out my spice drawer, I discovered a dented can wedged in back with a 1985 expiration date stamped on the bottom. It might be a good year for a fine wine, but mustard seeds?

The experience had a positive outcome. I dashed off to my neighborhood natural-foods store to pick up fresh spices in bulk (in small quantities) for fall and holiday cooking. While there, I was inspired to take in that evening’s cooking class, “Global Flavor Gone Local,” with chef Kate Moore.

Full of tips and tricks, Kate encouraged us to be spontaneous when cooking at home. With a well-stocked pantry of spices, it’s easy to change the flavor profile of a dish. Like Italian? Use basil, parsley and garlic. Latin? Try cumin, coriander and chipotle. “With a willingness to experiment, kitchen miracles can hap-pen,” she said.

Here’s my own take on Kate’s techniques for prepar-ing Indian-flavored roasted potatoes. My family always clamors for more of these spiced up spuds when served as a side with roasted chicken, pork or grilled fish.

Indian-Spiced Roasted Potatoes

6 medium, red or white skin potatoes

2 tablespoons minced garlic

1 tablespoon grated or minced fresh ginger

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 teaspoon mustard seeds

1 teaspoon coriander seeds

1 teaspoon cumin seeds

Salt to taste

Add Taste of India to

Roasted Potatoes

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.2. Scrub, dry and cut the potatoes into eighths and

place in a bowl. 3. Heat a saute pan with olive oil over medium heat

and toss in a “tester” pinch of ginger. When the ginger starts to sizzle, toss in the remaining ginger, the garlic and whole spices. Cook until fragrant and spices are lightly toasted, about 1-2 minutes.

4. Spoon the Indian-flavored oil and ingredients into the bowl of potatoes. Add salt and toss until all sides of the potatoes are well-coated.

5. Spoon potatoes on a baking sheet and spread out onto one layer. Roast for 30 minutes, or until tender. Flip once to ensure even cooking.

6. Remove from oven and serve. Serves 6.• • •

Q: My grandmother in Texas collected pottery throughout the 1940s and '50s. One of her favorite pieces features the image of an Indian and was made by Rookwood. She had it appraised in 1960 and was told it was painted by Matthew A. Daly in about 1900. The value at that time was $250. Even though I love the piece, I certainly would sell it if it is valuable. -- Susan, West Palm Beach, Fla.

A: According to "Warman's Rookwood Pottery: Identification and Price Guide" by Denise Rago and Jonathan Clancy and published by Krause, your vase is currently worth about $10,000 ... not a bad appreciation since 1960.

• • •Q: My dad lived in Colorado and was an avid fisher-

man. Needless to say, he accumulated quite an array of

Rookwood Pottery

fishing items, including rods, reels, tackle and three older creels. I would like to determine values. Do you have any suggestions? -- Lon, Pueblo, Colo.

A: There are several guides that might be helpful. My favorite is "Fishing Collectibles: Identification and Price Guide" by Russell E. Lewis and published by Krause. Copies are available at www.amazon.com. This reference features current pricing for hundreds of fishing collect-ibles with more than 2,000 illustrations in full color.

• • •Q: My grandmother had a doll that was given to her by

an uncle during World War II. Can you tell me its value? -- Win, Surprise, Ariz.

A: A free appraisal is generally worth what you pay for it. In other words, if it is important to know the value of an antique of collectible, you can contact dealers in your area for their opinion. A more accurate assessment would be an appraisal by a certified professional, and you should, of course, expect to pay for this service.

Since you live fairly near Phoenix, I suggest you con-sult the business pages of the phone book and check the listings under "appraisers." Make certain the appraiser you hire specializes in personal property, not real estate. They are listed together as a rule. You can get either a verbal appraisal, which is less expensive, or a written opinion, which is best for insurance purposes.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Expendables 2” (PG-13) -- The mean, pulpy-

looking action heroes of yesteryear are back for another lighthearted bullet-fest. Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Wil-lis, Ah-nuld, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and some other dudes join up with Chuck Norris to defeat the evil Jean Villain, (Jean-Claude Van Damme, and yes the bad guy of the movie is really named “Villain.”)

This is not a revival of the tough-guys, huge-guns action genre of the ‘80s, but more of a self-mocking reunion special. Schwarzenegger and Willis have to cram into a tiny car. They trade dozens of one-liners referencing more famous one-liners. Things explode quite frequently. It’s a lot of fun, depending on how much you enjoy jokes about Predator and Termina-tor.

“Grave of the Fireflies” [Blu-ray] -- Originally released in 1988, this classic work of dra-matic animation is coming to Blu-ray. Set in the final days of World-War II, Seita and Setsuko are children from a small town on the mainland of Japan. The children are torn from their home by bombing raids and must find their way to safety as more of the countryside is engulfed in flames.

Ghibli Studio produces amazing ani-mated films. This movie is more serious than its usual work, but keeps the same artistic standard. It’s a tremendously sad story, filled with glimpses of intense beauty.

“Bringing Up Bobby” (PG-13) -- Olive (Milla Jovovich of “Resident Evil”) is a Ukranian-born con artist and single mother. Her precocious 10-year-old boy, Bobby (Spencer List), has a bowl cut and a million lines of adoration for his mother. The two are partners in crime, scamming their way across the American Midwest. Things turn from overtly cute to ham-handed melodrama when an accident gets Bobby in trouble and Olive has to become a lawful, non-scheming person. The whole affair has an awkward, first-time director feel to it. A good choice if you want to catch a nap during a movie and not feel too left out.

“Black Magic” (1949) -- Orson Welles goes all-in on this hammy psycho-thriller about the POWERS OF THE MIND! Welles is Cagliostro, a hypnotist traveling with gypsies in some bygone era that demanded elaborate costuming and ridiculous set pieces. Cagliostro starts abusing his powers then gets reeled into a scheme to replace the queen of France. In many scenes, Welles gives the camera his most smoldering stares as the light filters directly onto his eyes. If you love the majesty and drama of “Citizen Kane,” then you can suffer through “Black Magic” and have a few laughs along the way.
