Q: Can you tell me when "Call of the Wildman" will be back? -- James R., Bowling Green, Ohio

A: Turtleman and company will be back for a 20-episode second season on Animal Planet beginning Sunday, June 2, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. This season, "Turtleman" Ernie Brown Jr. hits the road and travels to Texas and Mexico to rescue wild critters in the hit reality series. Kentucky's most famous backwoods animal-trapper ac-knowledges his strange appeal to audiences, saying, "People think I'm crazy, but they can't help but like me."

• • •Q: Can you tell me what Brooke

Burns has been up to? The last thing I remember seeing her in was in the new "Melrose Place" a few years back. -- Petra S., via e-mail

A: Brooke most recently starred in the Lifetime movie "A Sister's Revenge" (which premiered on April 26, and will re-air periodically in the next few weeks; check your local listings). Brooke also is excited about her new pilot series for the Game Show Network. When Brooke and I spoke recently, she told me all about her new projects: "I enjoy acting because you get to dip your toe into the fantasy of a role, like Suzanne in 'A Sister's Revenge.' And I enjoy the hosting because I love people, and that's a natural kind of medium for me that I enjoy as well. It's never boring.

"I just shot a pilot called 'Where Have You Been All

My Life?' It's kind of a 2013 version of 'The Dating Game.' It is super fun, and we're using a lot of social media as research, and using it in an onscreen format. It's been a blast."

• • •Q: I'm a big fan of MTV's "Buckwild," and I won-

dered if the show will continue after the death of Shain Gandee? -- Gerry T., Bentonville, Ark.

A: MTV spokesman Jake Urbanski said that al-though it was not an easy decision, "given Shain's tragic passing and essential presence on the show, we

felt it was not appropriate to con-tinue without him."

"Buckwild" producer J.P. Wil-liams of Parallel Entertainment announced last month that he has already sent out a casting call in Texas and Alaska, with plans to retool and recast the show in one of those states, with plans to shop the show around to other networks.

• • •READERS: A few weeks back,

I wrote about some of TNT's sum-mer premiere dates. Since then, the network decided to change up a few of them. The changes are as

follows: "Franklin & Bash," star-ring Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Breckin

Meyer and new cast member Heather Locklear, will launch its third season with a two-hour premiere on Wednesday, June 19, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. "Rizzoli & Isles," starring Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander, will kick off its fourth season on Tuesday, June 25, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. "Perception," starring Eric McCormack, will return for its second season on Tuesday, June 25, at 10 p.m. ET/PT.

Sewing MachineQ: I have an old electric Singer sewing machine. It is

in working condition. Whom can I contact to find out if it has any value? -- Carol, Stottville, N.Y.

A: Most electric sewing machines are fairly common and of little interest to serious collectors. Judging from the photographs you sent me, I think your machine is probably

from the 1940s or early ‘50s. Most of the Singer machines from this period sell for less than $100 at auction.

• • •Q: My great-grandmother had a china cabinet that

probably was made in about 1880. It is tiger oak and re-ally a beautiful piece of furniture. My problem is that the doors have curved glass and one of the panels is broken. Does anyone still make curved glass for Victorian pieces? -- Steve, Gunnison, Colo.

A: B&L Antiqurie, Inc. is a business that specializes in the replacement of curved glass. Contact is 6217 S. Lakeshore Road, P.O. Box 453, Lexington, MI 48450; bentglasscentral.com; [email protected]; and 800-840-1110.

Q: I have an opportunity to buy a pair of candlesticks made by Fenton in ebony with autumn leaf decoration. They are priced at $75 in a local shop. -- Carlie, Hast-ings, Neb.

A: The candlesticks were made during the 1990s and are not that old or rare. I checked several guides, and the set in ebony seems to retail for $40.

• • •Q: I have several books of old World War II ration

stamps. Any value? -- Wanda, Phymouth, OhioA: WWII ration memorabilia is still fairly plentiful. Old

ration booklets generally sell for less than $10.

Private Leonard William Wagner December 30, 1926 - December 27, 1944

Leonard William Wagner was born December 30, 1926 the eldest son of William and Hazel Wagner of Appleton. In

December of 1943, and at the age of 17 years, he enlisted in the Army and served in the field artillery.

Leonard left for overseas duty in May of 1944, and died in the defense of his country in Belgium on December 27, 1944. His final burial site was the cemetery at West Bank Lutheran Church, 14 miles east of Appleton with interment taking place April 12, 1949.

Survivors at the time of his death included his parents; two brothers: Donald of Dublin, Georgia and James of Alexandria City,

Appleton, MinnesotaLearn more at...

Appleton, Minnesota is the only city in the world to have all of its streets and avenues named after its fallen veterans. With the help of Appleton businesses and referencing the book Home of Honored Veterans, Tidbits of the Lake Area would like to introduce you to one of these Honored Soldiers each week.

Alabama; aunts: Mrs. Minnie Huston, Mrs. Ardell Krohn, Mrs. Harriet Olson and Mrs. Phoebe Haben, all of Benson, and Mrs. Elsie Broderson of California; and one uncle, Raymond Osborne of Texas. He was the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. John Wagner Sr. and George Osborne, all former Appleton residents.

Wagner Avenue is located on the north side of Appleton, between Veum and Werring Avenues.

More than 30 percent of veterans with Post-Trau-matic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are being prescribed a drug called benzodiazepine, which is a sedative, contrary to the Department of Veterans Affairs own PTSD guidelines. Benzodiazepine covers drugs such as Valium and Xanax, often used to help with insomnia and anxiety.

The problem, says Dr. Nancy Bernardy, clinical psy-chologist with the VA’s National Center for PTSD, is that the drug can be harmful. She writes in the PTSD Research Quarterly that the typical PTSD symptoms are not handled by benzodiazepine and that “mounting evidence suggests that the long-term harms imposed by benzodiazepine use outweigh any short-term symp-tomatic benefits in patients with PTSD.” Additionally, her report talks of withdrawal symptoms and risk of tolerance after very limited use.

The VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline “Manage-ment of Post-Traumatic Stress,” dated 2010, “Strongly recommends against the use of benzodiazepines to pre-vent the development of ASD or PTSD.” On the page of Balance of Benefit and Harm, benzodiazepine is noted with an asterisk that says “Potential harm.” In spite of this, prescription levels are about 30 percent.

Short-term prescriptions (two to four weeks) can be beneficial in terms of improved sleep, but at that point the patient naturally doesn’t want to give up the

PTSD Drug Debate

medication, which actually interferes with PTSD thera-pies. In one test, researchers compared sleep results between benzodiazepine and a placebo -- and found no difference.

There are three groups for which benzodiazepine prescription is very much contraindicated: veterans with PTSD and substance abuse disorder, veterans with mild traumatic brain injury, and veterans who take opiates for chronic pain.

To read the whole manual, Google “va/dod clinical

practice guidelines for the management of post-trau-matic stress”.

To read Dr. Bernardy’s report, Google “The Role of Benzodiazepines in the Treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)” in the PTSD Research Quar-terly.
