A man applied for a job as an industrial spy. Together with several other applicants, he was given a sealed envelope and told to take it to the fourth floor.

As soon as the man was alone, he stepped into an empty hallway and opened the envelope. Inside, a message read: “You’re our kind of person. Report to the fifth floor Personnel Office immediately.”

PICKS OF THE WEEK“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn

Part 2” (PG-13) -- The saga comes to a whimpering end with this final installment of the Twilight series. Bella (Kristen Stewart) starts her new life as a vampire -- red-eyed and somehow pastier than before. Her half-vampire baby is growing up alarmingly fast. The Volturi -- the vampire elite -- have de-creed that the super-child must be destroyed, because nothing is more dangerous than an immortal child. Naturally, this all builds to the final showdown between goofy-looking villains and one-dimensional side characters.

If you’re not already indoctrinated into the Twilight Club, there’s no point in diving in now. Even the climactic battle falls limp. The romance has lost what little pulse it had.

“The Master” (R) -- After serving in the Navy in World War II, Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) is filled with mental anguish. Quell crashes a party on a boat owned by Lancaster Dodd (Phillip Seymour Hoffman) -- a charis-matic intellectual who believes he’s discov-ered the scientific formula for happiness and enlightenment. Dodd sees Quell as a man who has become a beast and lost his way. As Dodd tries to save Quell, we see a more sinister side to his way of thinking.

This dense psycho-drama is propped up by the powerful performance of the two leads. Hoffman is both caring and selfish -- a man who thinks he can be man’s savior. It’s not a rental for a quiet evening of entertainment, but it’s as engaging and intense as it is heavy and smart.

“Chasing Mavericks” (PG) -- Based on a true story, this movie follows Jay Moriarty as he navigates teenhood in California and chases his dream of surfing the wildest waves in the ocean. Mavericks are enormous rogue waves that develop off the coast of Santa Cruz, and Moriarty wants to ride them. See-ing that they’re all deadly and powerful forc-es of nature, the teen wisely enlists the help of veteran surfer and next-door neighbor, Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler). It’s a happy movie, if a tad forgettable.

“Holy Motors” (R) -- Enchanting and bizarre, engaging and difficult to follow, this movie takes the audience along with Monsieur Oscar, a strange man who seems to change faces and roles at a whim. He’s an accordion player, a bum, an overbearing family man, a futuristic erotic motion-capture actor, a leprechaun and so much more. He as-sumes these different identities in a flash by changing in a limousine that carts him around Paris. Don’t expect it to make much sense on first viewing.

New Hours:

• It was former heavyweight champion and social activist Muhammad Ali who made the following observation: “A nation is only as good as its women.”

• During World War I, fully one-third of all men in England between the ages of 17 and 35 were killed.

• The 20th century saw some profound changes in society, and here is one of the more striking examples: Between 1900 and 1990, the lifespan of the average American man increased from less than 47 years to more than 72 years.

• You might be surprised to learn that 20 percent of American families don’t have bank accounts.

• It was in the late 1930s when Harry Reeves, a writer for the Donald Duck cartoon, decided that introducing three nephews would open up

a lot of story lines. At a loss for names for the characters, Reeves asked Jim Carmichael, who also worked on the cartoons, for sugges-tions. Carmichael was busy with his own work, but in glancing down at the newspaper on his desk he noticed Thomas E. Dewey and Huey P. Long were both mentioned in headlines, so he suggested Huey and Dewey. A friend named Louie Schmitt stopped in to say hello at that moment, so he added Louie as the third nephew.

• Jack Nicholson has been nominated for an Academy Award 12 times (more than any other actor in history) and has won the award twice. He also appeared in two episodes of “The Andy Griffith Show.”

• In 1974, a Gallup poll found that the most ad-mired man in America was Henry Kissinger.

Transistor RadioQ: I have a Magnavox transistor radio, model AM-

60. I had it in high school during the 1960s. It still works, and I have been offered $45 for it. Any advice? -- Mollie, Gulfport, Miss.

A: This offer should be sweet music to your ears, since it is valued at $10 in the Antique Trader "Radio and Television Price Guide" edited by Kyle Husfloen and published by Krause.

• • •Q: I have a souvenir booklet, "Here We Are -- The

Dionne Quints." It was first published in 1936, but the edition I have was published the following year. What makes it unusual is that it was purchased during a visit to the family compound in Canada. -- Margaret, Apache Junction, Ariz.

A: I have seen the first edition of this same booklet sell in the $15 to $45 range depending on condition. Since your booklet is not a first edition, and assuming it is in good condition, it is worth perhaps $25. For a second opinion, visit the antique mall in your city Patterns of the Past, 300 W. Apache Trail, No. 101, Apache Junction, AZ 85120.

• • •Q: I have an old French's mustard jar, patented

Feb. 23, 1915. Is there any value to it? -- Jim, West Warwick, R.I.

A: You presented me with a jigsaw puzzle missing most of its pieces. What is the design of the bottle? Incidentally, despite what some readers might think, the dates on most bottles and jars are inconsequential, since the year represents only the LAST patent date. Some products, such as Coca-Cola, used certain designs for decades under the same patent date.

• On March 6, 1776, a committee of the New York Provincial Congress instructs Major William Malcolm to dismantle the Sandy Hook lighthouse in order to prevent it from aiding the British by warning ships of the rocky shore. Malcolm succeeded, but the British were soon able to put the lighthouse back into service.

• On March 5, 1815, Franz Anton Mesmer, a German physician who pioneered the medi-cal field of hypnotic therapy, dies in obscurity in Germany. In 1772, Mesmer developed treatments that included the use of ethereal music as a hypnotic device.

• On March 7, 1876, 29-year-old Alexander Graham Bell receives a patent for his revo-lutionary new invention -- the telephone. Bell’s patent filing beat a similar claim by Elisha Gray by just two hours.

• On March 4, 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is inaugurated as the 32nd president of the United States. In his famous inaugural address, Roosevelt told Americans that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

• On March 9, 1943, Bobby Fischer is born in Chicago. Fischer went on to become the only American to win the chess world championship. Though he was clearly the dominant player in the world and had attained the highest chess rating in history, he was forced to retire from international competition in 1975 due to his increasingly erratic and bizarre behavior.

• On March 8, 1950, Volkswagen, maker of the Beetle automobile, expands its product offerings to include a microbus. Known officially as the Volkswagen Type 2, the bus was a favorite mode of transportation for hippies during the 1960s and became an icon of the American counterculture movement.

• On March 10, 1988, pop singer and teen idol Andy Gibb -- younger brother of Bee Gees Barry, Robin and Maurice -- dies in Britain just days after his 30th birthday. Six months earlier, Gibb had topped the charts with his debut record, “I Just Want to Be Your Everything.” His string of three No. 1 hits with his first three releases is a record that still stands today.

Q: Can you give me any info on the new season of "Army Wives"? -- Jennifer A., Nashville, Tenn.

A: The longtime hit drama, which begins its seventh season on March 10 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Lifetime, welcomes a new castmate: Brooke Shields. Brooke will play the "brash and brilliant Air Force Col. Katherine Young. A crack C-17 pilot who can hold her own in the boys' club atmosphere of the military, she's hardly touched down in her new assignment at Joint Base Marshall Bring before she clashes with Army Gen. Michael Holden (played by Brian McNamara)." The series stars Catherine Bell, Brian McNamara, Kelli Williams, Wendy Davis, Terry Serpico, Alyssa Diaz, JJ Soria, Ashanti, Torrey De-Vitto, Elle McLemore and Jesse McCartney. Sally Pressman and Sterling K. Brown will also appear in several episodes.

• • •Q: Now that Matthew Perry has his own

TV series, when can we expect to see some "Friends" stars show up? -- DeeDee T., via e-mail

A: Matthew will welcome his former TV wife to his new show, "Go On," sometime in April. Courteney Cox will play a new love interest for Matthew's character, Ryan King. The "Friends" friends always have been supportive of each other's post-"Friends" endeavors, with Jennifer Aniston appearing on Courteney's "Dirt" and "Cougar Town";

Lisa Kudrow also on "Cougar Town"; and Kudrow's "Web Therapy" hosting David Schwimmer and Courteney Cox.

• • •Q: I know you're a fan of TNT's "Dal-

las," so maybe you can find out some scoops for season two for me? -- Erin T. in North Dakota

A: Well, I did manage to get a little bit out of Josh Henderson, who plays John Ross Ewing, when we spoke recently. He told me: "At the end of season one, John Ross was on fire. By this season, he's cooled off a bit because he knows that if he wants to achieve his goals, then he's going to have to keep his emotions and anger buried to gain others' trust. But he's

definitely on a mission, and he definitely wants to take down Christopher and Elena."

In regard to John Ross and Pamela Barnes' new relationship, Josh explained: "These are two people who know that they are never sup-posed to be together. Their fathers are enemies, but they don't care. Julie (Gonzalo, who plays Pamela) and I get along so well; we have a ton of fun together. I really think it shows on screen, and it's going to be a fun thing for people to watch throughout season two."

As for the show's future after the pass-ing of Larry Hagman: "I don't know what the second half brings. None of us do. With Larry's passing, they've had to rewrite the second half of season two completely. I can tell you this: Season two is like season one on steroids. It's everything that people re-fell in love with 'Dallas' for in season one. You won't be disappointed."

Hosting a baby shower? There’s a great deal to think about, from the guest list to the food and fun. Traditionally, the “fun” part includes baby-themed guessing games, but when Ruthie Beahrs threw a shower for her sister this past fall, she knew a DIY craft activity would trump the games and score high on the entertainment factor. And it did.

Ruthie picked up 100 percent cotton one-piece-style outfits with snaps (one for each guest to decorate) in sizes newborn to 2 years and some paint supplies. She also cut stencils for those who preferred pre-made designs. When the guests gathered, each dipped and dabbled in colorful paints, adding their creative touches to the clothing.

Now, neat stacks of adorable outfits fill the dresser of 9-week-old Hazel Mae. “I think of my friends whenever I pull one out of the drawer, and since they are in ascending sizes, she will be dressed in the wearable art for a long time,” says new mom Christie Fitch.

Whether you are throwing a baby shower or putting to-gether a group gift, following is how to decorate inexpensive cotton outfits or T-shirts.

Here’s what you need:--Prewashed white 100 percent cotton baby one-piece-style outfit

with snaps or newborn- and toddler-size cotton T-shirt--Cardboard sheet--Cookie cutters or pre-made stencils--Fabric paints in squeeze bottles--Paper plate--Small foam paintbrushes or sponges clipped to clothespins

Here’s the fun:1. Lay the one-piece outfit on a work surface. Place card-

board between the two layers of fabric to protect the reverse side from any paint that may soak through. Choose a cookie cutter or a pre-made stencil -- a star, moon, heart, duckling, anything goes! Place it anywhere on the fabric.

2. Pour a little permanent fabric paint onto a paper plate. Dip in the small foam paintbrush. Tape a stencil on the fabric, or hold the cookie cutter firmly in place and start dab-dab-dabbing inside it, making sure to reach all the edges. You don’t have to put equal density of paint all over the shape. A little variation actually adds interest. When you’re through, lift the stencil or cookie cutter to see the lovely design.

3. Once the paint is dry, remove the cardboard and if the paint bottles say to do so, now is the time to iron on the reverse side to set the color.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: What are the risks if I don't brush my dog's teeth? He doesn't have really bad breath, so I don't see the point. -- Frank G., Houston

DEAR FRANK: Good ques-tion! Periodontal disease is a prob-lem that develops over time. Your dog's breath might be OK now, but his teeth and gums could be slowly deteriorating as plaque builds up. And while bad breath often signals gum disease, it isn't the only indica-tor of a problem.

Brushing your dog's teeth regu-larly helps prevent periodontal dis-ease. A dental checkup and cleaning at the veterinarian's office every six or 12 months is important too, be-cause the vet will remove built-up plaque and also diagnose problems or point out potential issues that you can head off early.

According to vets at VCA West Los Angeles, there are more reasons

to brush your dog's teeth.--Pets often hide dental pain,

like a toothache or abcess. Fre-quent brushing means you're more likely to realize there is a problem and take your dog to the vet to get it checked out.

--Severe periodontal disease can weaken a dog's jawbone to the point where it breaks.

--Periodontal disease can lead to infections in a dog's blood or heart.

--Oral cancer can be caught and treated earlier with regular veteri-nary dental cleanings.

VCA West L.A. added that vet-erinary dental cleanings are usually done while the dog is under anes-thesia, to prevent stress and make the dog more comfortable. It also advises that small dogs, and dogs that eat only soft foods, need more frequent cleanings.

A Gift To RememberYou’re up to your elbows in wedding planning

when you suddenly realize you haven’t shopped for gifts for your attendants yet. Your wedding is just weeks away, and your attendants have done so much for you already. You want to get them a great gift that they will cherish for years to come.

When shopping for gifts for your attendants, you can go one of three ways. You can get ev-eryone the same gift, you can get everyone a different gift, or you can select a theme and buy gifts based on that. For the guys, for example, you might go with a sports theme and buy them items with their favorite team logo on it. You might buy the businessman a pen and the athlete a hat.

Before you go shopping, you should think about the gifts you want to give. Do you want to buy everyone the same gift, or do you want to look for individual gifts? Do you want to buy everyone something they can use at the wedding? Do you want to buy material gifts, or do you want to look for event gifts, like tickets to a concert or a game?

Jewelry is a common gift, especially for the la-dies. If possible, you should look for versatile pieces your attendants can wear at your wedding and at other events. To make the gifts more personal, look for pieces with birthstones or have them en-graved.

Goody bags are another option. You may fill these with a wide range of products from bath

Wedding 2013salts and bubble bath for the ladies to sports gear for the guys.

If everyone likes to hang out as a group, tickets to some event might be ideal. You might arrange to go to a concert, game, play or some other event. The op-tions are endless, and if you think there might be sched-ule conflicts, you can always purchase an event ticket for each individual.

If you are on a tight budget, you might make the gifts. You will find numerous ideas online, and not all of them require you to be crafty or handy. You could make a CD for attendants of their favorite tunes or fill a basket with their favorite foods.

It doesn’t matter what you give your attendants. As long as you put some thought into it, they will be de-lighted with whatever you give them.
