Webster, a 1778 graduate of Yale, began writ- ing America’s first dictionary at age 43, wrapping up the job of 70,000 entries at age 70. He was responsible for changing some of the old English spellings, such as “colour” to “color” and “musick” to “music.” • • The National Mole Day Founda- tion urges you to celebrate National Mole Day on October 23. Does that mean it’s time to be kind to those furry little fellows that wreak havoc on your lawn? Not at all! It’s a day to get ex- cited about the mole, a basic measur- ing unit in chemistry, and to memorize Avogadro’s number, 6.024 x 10 to the 23rd power. That’s the formula that defines the amount of atomic mass units in a gram. It’s the amount of a substance that equals the quantity containing as many units as there are atoms in 0.012 kg of Carbon-12. It might actually be easier to be kind to the furry animal. • • October is a big month for monu- ments. President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor on an October day in 1886. The statue, officially called the Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World, had been received from France the previous June in 350 separate parts and was assembled over the next four months. Nine-year-old Joey, was asked by his mother what he had learned in Sunday school. “Well, Mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. When he got to the Red Sea, he had his army build a pontoon bridge and all the people walked across safely. Then, he radioed headquarters for reinforcements. They sent bombers to blow up the bridge and all the Israelites were saved.” “Now, Joey, is that really what your teacher taught you?” his mother asked. “Well, no, Mom. Try to Avoid These Scary Investment Moves If you have kids — or even if you don’t — you’re probably aware that Halloween is fast approaching. Of course, you may find the ghouls, witches and creepy impersonations of celebrities to be more amusing than alarming, but, as you go through life, you will find some things that are generally frightening — such

as investment moves that are misdirected or go awry.

Here are some potentially scary investment moves to avoid:

Investing too aggressively — In the invest-ment world, here’s one of the fundamental truths: The greater the risk, the greater the po-tential reward. So, by investing aggressively, you can potentially achieve greater returns. But if you invest too aggressively, you can, quite simply, get burned and lose your princi-palInvesting too conservatively — You can’t invest with no risk. However, you can find investments that offer a higher preservation of principal in exchange for little or no growth potential. But if your portfolio is full of these vehicles, you may never achieve the growth you need to reach your long-term goals.Failing to diversify — If your portfolio mostly consists of the same type of investment, and a downturn hurts that particular class of assets, you’ll take a big hit. But by spreading your dollars among an array of investments you can reduce the effects of volatility on your overall holdings. Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or pro-tect against loss.Chasing “hot” investments — By the time you hear about a “hot” investment, it will prob-ably already be cooling off. And whether it’s hot or not, it might not be appropriate for your individual needs and risk tolerance.Trading too frequently — If you’re constantly buying and selling investments to maximize your profits, you may end up actually mini-mizing your success. Frequent trading will run up commissions and other investment costs — and the greater your expenses, the lower your real rate of return. Plus, by always adding and subtracting investments to your portfolio, you’ll find it difficult to follow the type of long-term, consistent, comprehensive strategy that’s necessary to help you attain your objec-tives, such as saving for retirement.Starting too late — As an investor, you’ll find that time is one of your greatest allies. The earlier you start saving and investing for your goals, the better your chances of attaining them. “Save early and save often” may sound like a cliché, but it’s good advice.Taking a “time out” from investing — Wheth-er it’s a market slump, a political trauma, a natural disaster or some other event, you can

always find a reason to head to the invest-ment sidelines for a while until things cool off, straighten out or return to what seems like “normal.” Depending on your goals, not participating in the market may cause you to miss out on any opportunities that the market can present. At times, it can be tough to stay invested, but over the long run, a steady, dis-ciplined approach can be a good strategy.Halloween comes and goes in a single day. But by steering clear of these menacing investment moves, you can help take some of the fear out of investing and make it a more productive experience. Are Strays a Threat to Housecats?DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We have several apparently stray cats that can be seen wan-dering the neighborhood in the early morning and at night. I’m not sure where they came from, but there is a large stand of pine trees and scrub behind our subdivision. I’m afraid to let my cats out even during the day, as I worry they could come in contact with orbeattackedbyoneofthesestrays.WhatcanIdo?--GaryinTampa

DEARGARY:Contactyourlocalanimal-controlofficeaboutthestraycats.Theymaybea colony of feral cats -- cats that have lived their entire lives apart from humans. If so, they most likely can’t be socialized.ThisisanongoingprobleminFlorida,particularly,asferalcatcoloniesgrowinsubur-ban areas. And yes, it makes going outside somewhat dangerous for your housecats. If possible, keep them indoors at all times. If you have a screened enclosure, they can hang out there, as long as the screen has no holes that would allow them to escape.Keepyourcats’immunizationsuptodate,asdiseaseslikeFIV(felineimmunodefi-ciencyvirus)andrabiesarecommonamongferalcatpopulations.Ifoneofyourcatsisattacked or you see it in contact with a feral cat, take your cat straight to the vet. Now, it is possible that animal control will not trap the cats wandering your neighbor-hood. Or, they may catch them, yet you’ll see more cats turn up. What some animal welfare groups are doing -- since shelters are full already -- is trapping the cats, having them spayed or neutered and given immunizations, and then releasing them back to theircolony.Thehopeisthatfewerbreedingcatswillreducetheferalpopulation.

Asthma Not Only for ChildrenDEAR DR. DONOHUE: What gives? When I was a kid, I had asthma. Then it went away completely. Now, at age 37, it’s come back. As a child, I took only one medicine, and did well. Now I have a number of medicines and inhal-ers, and I’m confused. Will you simplify asthma for me? It isn’t the same as it used to be. Do you think I have devel-oped allergies that brought it back? -- H.F.

ANSWER: In the more developed countries of the world, around 15 percent of children and 12 percent of adults suf-fer from asthma. Asthma resolves for many children as they reach adolescence, but it can come back. Adults also can develop asthma for the first time. It’s not strictly a childhood problem. Cough, wheezing and shortness of breath are the signs of an asthma attack. Asthma comes in attacks separated by periods when the asthmatic is well. The goal of treatment is to extend the well periods and shorten any attacks, something that wasn’t all that possible when you had only one medicine as a child. The basis of an attack is constriction of the breathing tubes, the airways, the bronchi. Along with narrowed airways, inflammation strikes them, and they fill with thick mucus. The combination makes it difficult to get air into and out of the lungs. Exhaling is particularly difficult. Triggers for asthma attacks include cold air, exercise, viral infections like the common cold and allergens. If your doctor believes that allergens are leading to your asthma attacks, then testing for them is worthwhile. For many, allergy doesn’t lead to bouts of asthma. Exercise as a trigger needs some clarification. Everyone gets short of breath when exercising, but recovery is quick, within five minutes. Breathlessness brought on by an exercise-induced asthma attack lasts much longer, 30 to 60 minutes. An attack of asthma often can be stopped in its tracks with an inhaler medicine like albuterol (Ventolin and Proventil). For longer control, cortisone inhalers or inhalers containing cortisone and a long-acting drug that expands airways keeps a person attack-free. Advair is an example. The booklet on asthma has a more detailed explanation of the common illness and its treatments. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 602W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.***DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What can you tell me about glossopharyngeal? My doctor says I have it. He has me on medicine for it. -- K.L.

ANSWER: The glossopharyngeal (GLOSS-oh-fair-IN-gee-ul) nerve is one of the 12 cranial nerves, nerves that come directly from the brain. They are the nobility of the nerve kingdom. The glossopharyngeal nerve is the nerve of taste and the nerve that activates some throat muscles. Glossopharyngeal neuralgia consists of episodes of knife-like pain in the throat and back of the tongue. Swallowing, chewing and even talking can provoke an attack. Carbamazepine, gabapentin, phenytoin and valproic acid are some of the drugs used to curtail such attacks. Surgically freeing the nerve from an encircling and pulsating artery is another treatment for this condition.***Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column when-ever possible. ¥ Using your fireplace? Try adding citrus peels to the logs for a nice aroma. They can be a good starter material as well.

¥ Those hide-a-key rocks can be a little obvi-ous -- at least they are to me. I have a spare key hidden outside too, but I sealed mine in a plastic baggie and buried it in a spot known only to our family members. Also, it’s not right by the door. -- I.E. in Missis-sippi

¥ When closing up our cabin for the season, we brought a box of mothballs and scattered them around the porch perimeter. This keeps small animals like mice and skunks from setting up shop there while no one is around. -- S.F. in Pennsylvania

¥ Now’s a great time to start weatherstrip-ping! Check and recaulk windows. Caulk along baseboards to deter drafts. Add insu-lation to electrical outlets and under sinks around plumbing. Seal it up to stay toasty this winter.

¥ Remember to turn off bathroom fans after 10 minutes. In the winter, if your house is on the dry side, don’t use the fan at all: Open the door so the humidity from the shower or bath reaches into the house.
