TIDBITS® LOOKS

BEHIND THE MAGICby Blue Sullivan

Cinema in America has entertained us with over a century of movie magic. Yet, during the making of some movies, equally unbelievable stories unfolded before the films ever hit the big screen.

• In Steven Spielberg’s terrifying 1975 classic, “Jaws,” you don’t see much of the actual shark until very late in the film. That wasn’t just an aesthetic choice. It was due to all of the problems Spielberg and the crew had with the mechanical sharks that were used during filming.

• Three different mechanical sharks were employed during the filming of “Jaws.” All were nicknamed “Bruce” after Steven Spielberg’s attorney, Bruce Ramer.

• All three mechanical versions of “Bruce” proved unreliable from the beginning of the shoot. The animatronics stalled the first time one was put in the water, and the sharks sank to the seafloor several times, leaving divers scrambling to recover them.

• After completing the filming of “Jaws,” the studio had so little confidence in the film that the three Bruces were dumped on the Universal back lot. No efforts were made to preserve them, and none of the three original sharks remain.

Q: Why does history keep repeating itself ?

A: Because we weren’t listening the first time!

Pentagon Planning Medals Database

Right on the heels of the Supreme Court’s decision that it’s perfectly legal to claim medals one has never earned, the Pentagon is doing something it should have done years ago -- developing a medals database. One hurdle to rolling out a comprehensive, accurate database is the fire that occurred in 1973 in the records center in St. Louis. The records of at least 16 million service members, which included all their medals and service, were lost in that fire. While information for more recent years has been put on computer, earlier files haven’t been digitized -- and some are gone for good. The Pentagon now appears to be ready to take the step of creating a database of the records it does have. Like most efforts involving the government, it might take a while. At this point, keep an eye on legislation in Congress to replace the original Stolen Valor Act. A few new proposals are out there now, ones that wouldn’t fall within the Supreme Court’s problem with free speech. One, by Sen. Jim Webb, focuses on the personal-gain aspect of wearing unearned medals. Criminal punishment would include fines and imprisonment.Senators Scott Brown and Joe Heck have produced revised version of the original legislation that would make it “a federal misdemeanor for someone to profit from lying about their military service, records or awards.”Don’t let down your guard just yet. While, thanks to the Supreme Court, there’s not much you can legally do about nailing a phony, you can take names and keep your eyes open. Make use of the existing online databases such as The P.O.W Network [www.pownetwork.org]; The Congressional Medal of Honor Society [www.cmohs.org]; and Home of Heroes [www.homeofheroes.com], which has an alphabetical index of 120,000 genuine recipients of major military awards.

• On Aug. 16, 1896, George Carmack spots nuggets of gold in a creek bed near the Klondike River in Canada’s Yukon Territory. His lucky discovery sparks the last great gold rush in the American West. Over the next two years, as many as 50,000 would-be miners arrived in the region.

• On Aug. 17, 1915, Charles F. Kettering is issued a patent for his “engine-starting device” -- the first electric ignition for automobiles. In the early years, drivers used hand cranks to start the internal combustion process that powered car engines.

• On Aug. 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs into law the Social Security Act. Although it was initially created to combat unemployment during the Great Depression, Social Security now functions primarily as a safety net for retirees and the disabled.

• On Aug. 18, 1940, Walter Percy Chrysler, the founder of the American automotive corporation that bears his name, dies in New York. Aside from automobiles, Chrysler was known for financing the 77-story Art Deco Chrysler Building skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. When completed in 1930, it was the tallest building in the world and the first manmade structure to top 1,000 feet.

• On Aug. 19, 1953, the Iranian military, with the assistance of the United States government, overthrows the government of Premier Mohammed Mosaddeq and reinstates the Shah of Iran. As thanks for the help, the Shah signed over 40 percent of Iran’s oil fields to U.S. companies. However, the Shah was toppled from power in 1979.

• On Aug. 13, 1961, East German soldiers begin building a wall between Soviet-controlled East Berlin and the democratic western section of the city. Berlin residents found themselves cut off from friends or family until the wall was dismantled in 1989.

• On Aug. 15, 1983, Hurricane Alicia forms south of Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico. Three days later, the Texas Gulf Coast is slammed by the storm, causing 21 deaths. The $2 billion in damages recorded was a record for hurricane damage in Texas at the time.

With school kicking back up and many young athletes taking the fi eld for another season, many student athletes turn to many things to try and gain that competitive edge. One that has been fairly prominent for the past 30 years is creatine. Mixed reports indicate that at a range of 13 to 44 percent of collegiate athletes have used creatine with this number elevating rapidly. Additionally, a range of 17 to 30 percent of high school athletes, 57 percent of health club members, and 74 percent of power sport athletes have reported using creatine monohydrate. (Rawson, et al., 2007)

So will adding creatine into your training regimen make you bigger, stronger, and faster? There is no direct answer to that question.

Creatine is utilized in a very short term energy system in the body called the ATP-PC system. The terminology is not relevant, but the outcome is. We have to understand that this system is only responsible for explosive short lived energy, nothing else.

So the answer to the previously posed is yes, but only for some types of athletes and only if you understand how to utilize it. If we know that we can increase energy in this small window of exertion, we can harness that and take advantage of the extra fuel to get in another rep or set. This allows us to push a bit harder than we normally would be able to. So for athletes that normally work within this explosive energy window like football players, power-lifters, or sprint swimmers creatine can be widely benefi cial.

In August of 2007, the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition published their position statement on creatine supplementation and exercise. After an extensive review of literature, Buford, et al., (2007) conveyed nine points surrounding creatine use. He conveyed that creatine monohydrate was the most extensively form of creatine studied and that creatine was the most effective ergogenic supplement available to athletes. He also went on to suggest that there was no scientifi c research to suggest that creatine monohydrate supplementation was not only safe, with no short or long term adverse side effects, but could offer benefi cial in injury prevention and management of select medical conditions.

BEHIND THE MAGIC (continued):

• The special effects coordinator of the film had the spookiest scrape. On Friday the 13th, 1976, he crashed his car in Holland. When he got out, he noticed the road sign. It read “Ommen, 66.6 km.”

• In terms of sheer danger, the film shoot for the 1925 epic “Ben-Hur” (the second of three cinematic adaptations of the novel of the same name) takes the cake. The chariot race in the film is still renowned for its realism, because the race was completely real.

• “Ben-Hur’s” director Fred Niblo wasn’t happy with the initial footage of the race, so he staged it again. The second time, he told the stunt drivers that the winner of the race would be given the equivalent of around $1,000. Drivers took the race so seriously that there was a huge pile-up of men and horses before the finish line.

• Another scene in “Ben-Hur,” a huge sea battle between two ships, proved equally dangerous. Italian extras were recruited and separated by political affiliation (pro- or anti-fascist), then put on the two boats, to give the on-boat clashes more “realism.”

• After separating the two sets of extras according to their violently opposed political affiliations, “Ben-Hur’s” director gave all the men prop swords that had actually been sharpened, again for “realism.”

• In Howard Hughes’ misbegotten 1956 epic “The Conqueror,” John Wayne played Genghis Khan. Filming was disastrous from the very start, when a flash flood nearly claimed the entire crew of the film.

• Later, “The Conqueror’s” lead actress, Susan Hayward, was attacked by a panther. Fortunately, she survived the attack and was able to carry on filming.

• Most of the filming of “The Conqueror” took place in St. George, Utah. Heat during filming regularly topped 120 degrees, and, unbeknownst to the performers, not far away in Yucca Flats, Nevada, were the military testing grounds for the atomic bomb.

• Eleven atomic bombs were tested in Yucca Flats during filming of “The Conqueror.” Not only were the actors and crew exposed to dusts blown over from the nuclear test site, filmmakers unknowingly shipped 60 tons of the radioactive dirt back to Los Angeles for reshoots.

• There aren’t many films more beloved than 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz,” starring Judy Garland. A little known fact is that she wasn’t the child actor the screenwriters had in mind for the part. Their choice for the part wasn’t a child actor at all: W.C. Fields!

• In “The Wizard of Oz,” actress Margaret Hamilton offered one of the best villains in film history — The Wicked Witch of the West. Her performance was so good, in fact, that many of her scenes were trimmed down or even removed because they were too frightening.

• Not one, not two, but three planes associated with “The Omen” were hit by lightning during the shoot. Among those onboard during these three separate incidents were star Gregory Peck, screenwriter David Seltzer and executive producer Mace Neufeld.

• Speaking of Mace Neufeld, his hotel during the “The Omen” shoot was the object of an IRA bombing. A restaurant frequented by the cast and crew was also bombed. Luckily, no one was hurt in either incident.

• Many years later, the strange real-life occurrence that inspired “The Birds” was explained as the result of toxic algae in the birds’ water supply.

Three Simple Steps to Weight Loss

Far too many of us, women especially, can develop weight problems as we age. We’re less active. Menopause doesn’t help. We might have different eating patterns.

Researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center have done a study that looked at self-monitoring as a way to reduce weight.

The study results show how we can lose weight safely in three steps: 1) Keep a journal that reports everything that’s eaten; 2) Don’t skip meals; and 3) Don’t go out to lunch. Sounds so simple, doesn’t it.

They divided 123 overweight and obese senior women into two groups for the yearlong study: one group used diet and exercise, and the other only diet.

Here’s what they learned:Women who kept journals of what they ate

lost six pounds more than those who didn’t keep a journal. This appeared to be the most important of the three steps, and it makes sense. If we write down exactly what we eat, it’s easier to identify whether we’re meeting our goals. The trick is to be honest, and being honest means measuring portions and reading labels -- and always keeping your journal with you in case you do eat while away from home.

Women who went out for lunch at least once a week lost five pounds less than those who didn’t, or who ate lunch out less frequently. When you eat at a restaurant, you can’t control the size of the portions or how the food is cooked.

Women who skipped meals lost eight pounds less than those who didn’t skip meals. Researchers weren’t sure why this was so, but it could be that being hungry leads to overeating or eating out. Eating at regular times gave the best success.

Matilda Charles regrets that she cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into her column whenever possible. Write to her in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to [email protected].

Time for Menard to Get It In GearSay this for Paul Menard. He can pick them. e Crown Royal Presents the Curtiss Shaver 400 -- named a er a re ghter from Alabama -- was the 203rd Sprint Cup race of Menard’s career. e last time NASCAR visited Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Menard was the driver who won.It was quite a story. Menard’s family has a long history at the Brickyard. He is from Eau Claire, Wisc. Even now, Menard, 31, has only six top- ve nishes at the Sprint Cup level. So far this year, his best nish was a sixth in the Daytona 500. He is 15th in the point standings.Repeating at Indy would seem to require a great deal of magic being re-created.“I’ve got the trophy in a spot right between my bedroom and the kitchen,” Menard said, “so I walk by it a dozen teams a day, at least.”If it’s been a humdrum season so far for Menard, it mirrors the performance of his team, Richard Childress Racing, which hasn’t won a race yet, either. One of Menard’s teammates, Kevin Harvick, ranks sixth in the point standings, but the other, Je Burton, is 19th.“RCR, as a whole, has run competitively this year, but we need to get better to make the next step up, everywhere from Kevin and myself and Je , across the board, and we have been doing some testing, trying to develop some new ideas and theories to get better,” Menard said. “Really, this week is no di erent.”No di erent? Maybe not for his team or his teammates. For Menard, though, it’s a return to a scene he will remember always.Menard is a long shot to make the Chase. He has to win. Only seven races remain in the NASCAR regular season.“We have to take more risks,” he said. “If it comes to fuel mileage at the end, maybe gamble a little bit to stretch the mileage out. We are working hard on improving the race cars every week.“ at’s a big part of it, too, just putting yourself in contention of winning. If you run top 10, and especially top ve, you can put yourself in position to win.”Even, at least once, at the Brickyard.***Monte Dutton covers motorsports for e Gaston (N.C.) Gazette. THE PATH OF A STAR

Among the countless actors and actresses that have graced our TVs or movie screens, there are an untold number of fascinating stories about how those men and women got there in the first place. Here are a few of the most interesting ones. • Although Elvis wasn’t primarily an

actor (though he did appear in 31 movies between 1956 and 1969), his eighth grade teacher certainly

encouraged acting over his eventual day job. She told him that he had no

“aptitude for singing.” Fortunately, he politely disagreed with her appraisal

and became the best-selling recording artist of all time.

• Emmy-nominated actress Jane Lynch of the hit Fox show “Glee” got her first break from doing commercials for Frosted Flakes. She struck up a friendship with the commercials’ director,

Christopher Guest. Later he would cast her for big spotlight roles in his films “Best in Show”

and “A Mighty Wind.”• People strongly associate John Travolta with

his starring role as Danny Zuko in the smash movie version of “Grease.” Yet five years earlier another future star played the same

role in a theater production of “Grease.” He

was a then little-known actor named Richard Gere.

• Before he became the blockbuster superstar we know from such movies as “Rain Man”

and “Mission: Impossible,” Tom Cruise considered a far different calling: priesthood.

In fact, he told Parade magazine: “I looked at the priesthood and said, ‘This is what I’m going to do.’” Fortunately for Hollywood,

he ultimately decided not to become “Father Cruise.” PATH OF A STAR (continued):

• Before becoming the world-famous director of the two highest-grossing movies of all time, “Titanic” and “Avatar,” James Cameron drove a bus for a living.

• Long before winning an Oscar in 1997 for Best Supporting Actor in “Jerry Maguire,” Cuba Gooding worked as a back-up dancer for Lionel Richie. When Richie played the Olympics in 1984, Gooding was with him.

• Mick Jagger once considered a more stable calling than “internationally famous rock star.” He originally studied to be an accountant at the London School of Economics.• Legendary actor Christopher Lee — who has appeared in over 275 movies and shows in his long, illustrious career — was once a heroic figure in another life, too. He was a Special Operations Executive during World War II, serving as part of an elite unit commissioned directly by Winston Churchill. • Also serving in the unit with Christopher Lee was Ian Fleming, the creator of James Bond. Many of Bond’s adventures were actually modeled after

Fleming’s own experiences with the elite commando unit.

• Kurt Russell has been on our TVs and movie screens since the 1970s, but did you know he was also a champion athlete? Before injury, Russell played minor league baseball. His batting average when he retired was .586! He was a pretty good race car driver also, winning six national championships before he was 21.

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

Get Free HDTV With Outdoor AntennaQ: I recently canceled my cable subscription in order to save money. While watching the news streamed on my computer is OK, I’d like to pick up local stations on my TV. How can I do that? -- Chuck F., New Hampshire

A: Today’s over-the-air TV transmissions are entirely digital, a change mandated by the government a couple of years back. The old “analog” TV transmissions were switched off in 2010, something that owners of old tube televisions who try to pick up signals with their old antennae are painfully aware of.However, even with an older television, you can pick up line-of-sight transmissions and receive local television stations. Converter boxes are available at most large retailers that sell electronics and cost from $30 to $60. You can learn more at http://dtv.gov/consumercorner_4.html.If you have a newer HD television, you might be able to pick up a few signals if the TV has a built-in digital antenna. If not, there are several HD antennas on the market. If you live in an area where TV signals are traditionally faint, you’ll absolutely need one of these. They start at around $45 and go up in price, but the plus side is that you won’t pay any more money for TV signals once the antenna is up. At least one

HOME TIP: If you have an existing dish or antenna mount on the roof, take note of how the mount base is set up. It can be a big help in setting up your HD antenna without causing a roof leak.

VETERANOWNED • When patching cracks in plaster walls, if the

crack is large or it’s a small hole, stuff it with wadded-up newspaper or steel wool in order to fill the gap. Apply the plaster over the top.

• Recipe substitution: For each cup of brown sugar needed, use 1 cup of white sugar and 2 tablespoons of molasses.

• If your washer oversuds because you accidentally added too much detergent, just add a half-cup of white vinegar to the wash water. It will dampen the extra bubbles. Then make sure to put the load through an additional rinse to eliminate soap residue in your clothes.

• Ever had to deal with early arrivals at your garage sale? If so, you know it can be annoying and disruptive. When advertising your sale, use the block number instead of your house number. It will still be easy to find, but you’re less likely to get staked out.

• “It can be hard to find a good contractor or company to provide a service. The best referral resource I’ve found is friends. Whenever someone I know has work done at their home or purchases an item I might be interested in, I always find out the details of who worked on it or where it was purchased, and whether my friends were satisfied with the outcome. Friends and even acquaintances usually are quite amenable to giving details, especially when they are either very pleased or very displeased with a job.” -- R.E. in New York

brand of HD antenna was designed to be set up inside your home, but there are other brands specifically made to be set up outside or on the roof. Outdoor antennas can pick up signals up to 50 miles away in most cases, as long as there aren’t too many obstructions like hills or other buildings between your home and the transmission source. To set up an outdoor HD antenna, follow the instructions included with the product. Those made for rooftops should include proper mounting bolts and, ideally, small sealing squares (basically roof-patching squares) that sit between the antenna mount base and the roof. If those sealing squares aren’t included, head to your home-improvement store for roof patches and cut them to fit. You’ll also need to feed the coaxial cable connecting the antenna back into the house to your television. If possible, try using the holes already drilled by the cable company to install its coax, rather than punch more holes in your home’s envelope. A number of videos on the web can provide more information on antenna installation. This video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CuY-D9fQG_s) shows one homeowner’s installation option, at the top of the eave. Another (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0WQtzMdo7I) provides details on properly positioning the antenna for an optimal signal, which is important in remote areas.

Ban Pit Bulls?DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been reading recent reports that some communities in the United States are trying to ban certain breeds of dogs, like pit bulls. I think this is a great idea, because pit bulls are so unpredictable and violent. Do you agree? -- Carol in Tacoma, Wash.

DEAR CAROL: Nope, I don’t agree. That’s because completely banning specific dog breeds won’t solve the problem of dog bites and attacks. Even dogs of breeds considered benign can attack humans or other dogs -- poodles being the first that come to mind. But, you argue, poodles aren’t violent! Well -- unfortunately, I’ve met a few. The fact is, all breeds of dog have the potential to bite humans. Owners must

be aware of and accept this possibility.I try to educate pet owners about better ways to care for their pets. In the case of dog attacks, I feel that education of the owner is the strongest deterrent. That education should start before a person even becomes a dog owner, so that he or she can make the best choice of dog for the household. A pit bull or other type of guard or attack dog may not be ideal for a number of reasons beyond possible temperament: They’re big dogs; they’re powerful; they need lots of attention and training, no matter how nice they appear to be.Dog owners of all breeds -- not just those considered “dangerous” -- need to know the specific behavioral issues of their breed. They need to train

their dog, and socialize the dog with both other humans and other dogs. The best way to learn how to do this is to enroll in group training classes with a certified trainer, an investment that pays off all the way down the road.

A WORLD OF ADVENTUREAmerica obviously doesn’t corner the market on men and woman of courage and adventurous spirit. Here are a few of the more interesting recent examples of our fellow explorers across the globe.• Alastair Humphreys of the United Kingdom

has ridden his bicycle over 46,000 miles in various locales around the world. Humphreys did this before he was 35 years old. He has also crossed Iceland’s glacial highlands entirely on foot and is planning what will be the longest journey to the South Pole ever attempted without support.

• After travelling nearly everywhere on the globe, Humphreys decided to see more of the country of his birth. He spent all of 2011 in Great Britain. He completed an ambitious group of “microadventures,” beginning and ending these trips at the front door of his home outside London.

• Among his explorations in 2011 was a hike up the M25, the well-known roadway that is notorious for having the worst traffic in the country. He also swam the Thames River, familiarized himself with the UK’s public transportation and spent several days living entirely off the land.

• Humphreys used social media to encourage his fellow adventurers to record video diaries of their own “microadventures.” Through Twitter, he received a surprising number of responses, some from as far away as Japan.

• Austrian mountaineer Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner recently became the only woman to summit all 14 of the peaks worldwide that measure over 26,000 feet (8,000 m). She completed the staggering feat in 2011, besting the K2 near the border of China and Pakistan.

• Kaltenbrunner had nearly gotten the record in 2010 on the very same mountain. She was only 400 meters from the summit when tragedy struck. Her partner, mountaineer Fredrik Ericsson, slipped while climbing above her and tumbled below. Kaltenbrunner immediately abandoned her mission in an attempt to rescue her partner. Unfortunately, Ericsson’s injuries from the fall proved fatal.

• The tragic 2010 trip to K2 was Kaltenbrunner’s fifth attempt to scale the most dangerous peak on Earth. An infamous section of the K2 known as the “Bottleneck” claimed 11 lives in 2008 alone.
