Flag Thief IdentifiedWhen I first heard the news item, I was outraged: Over the course of three days, 75 American flags were stolen from a veterans cemetery. Upon further investigation, I was chuckling ... almost. In New York, in the Civil War section of the Cedar Park Cemetery in Hudson, flags had gone missing, and people were justifiable angry. Only the flag portions were missing, not the wooden poles, which remained pushed into the ground. The latest theft was discovered just hours after a meeting of local officials, veterans and police to address the topic of stolen flags -- because it had happened before at the same cemetery. Something had to be done.Upon learning of the new damage, police set up cameras to attempt to nail the culprit in the flag thefts. What they found on the video had them scratching their heads: A woodchuck, also knows as a groundhog, was seen pulling down the flags and hauling them away, minus the wooden pole. Extending the investigation, police used a special camera to go down into the burrows and tunnels the woodchucks had dug, and sure enough, there were remnants of the flags, used as bedding.A look around the Internet reveals that woodchucks have been notorious for stealing flags (and flower arrangements) in cemeteries. In Bernville, Pa., woodchucks stole 40 flags -- in 2005. So it’s been going on for a long time. It’s suspected that there’s a chemical put into the flags that attracts the woodchucks. While the loss of the flags is good news for flag manufacturers, who will no doubt benefit from additional flag orders, they need to do the patriotic thing and change that chemical. Perhaps the addition of mint or another scent will deter the varmints from snatching flags.

• On Aug. 9, 1936, at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, black American track star Jesse Owens wins his fourth gold medal of the Games in the 4-by-100-meter relay. His relay team set a new world record of 39.8 seconds, which stood for 20 years.

• On Aug. 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the world’s first atom bomb over the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Some 80,000 people are killed as a result of the blast, and another 35,000 are injured. At least 60,000 more would be dead by the end of the year from the effects of the radioactive fallout.

• On Aug. 7, 1959, the U.S. unmanned spacecraft Explorer 6 is launched into an orbit around the Earth. The spacecraft featured a scanner that transmitted a crude picture of the Earth’s surface from a distance of 17,000 miles. The photo, received in Hawaii, took nearly 40 minutes to transmit.

• On Aug. 11, 1965, in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, a riot began that eventually ranged over a 50-square-mile area. With the assistance of thousands of National Guardsmen, order was restored five days later. The violence left 34 dead, 1,032 injured, nearly 4,000 arrested and $40 million worth of property destroyed.

• On Aug. 8, 1974, President Richard Nixon announces his intention to become the first president in American history to resign. With impeachment proceedings under way against him for his involvement in the Watergate affair, Nixon finally bowed to pressure from the public and Congress to leave the White House.

• On Aug. 10, 1981, Pete Rose of the Philadelphia Phillies gets the 3,631st hit of his baseball career, breaking Stan Musial’s record for most hits by a National Leaguer. It was only Rose’s 2,886th game; it had taken Musial 3,026 games to set the mark.

Fats: Friend or Foe? (Part 3 of 3 Series)

How many of us have been fooled by the “fat free” label we see on so many foods today? ese so called healthy options that simply replace fats with sugars, llers, or even a smaller amount of arti cial fats that could harm us even more than the fats that were in there before. Just about everyone has given in at least once, but never again.

e truth is that certain fats can hurt us but other fats can be the missing piece to a great diet. Fats that we eat will add calories to our diet, but they also control our cholesterol levels. Saturated and trans fats will both lower our good cholesterol (HDL) and increase our bad cholesterol (LDL). is leads to higher risk of heart disease and can severely slow down metabolism. Trans fats are especially harmful, increasing heart disease rates far more than saturated fats ever could. ese fats hide in labels, so you have to look for the word “hydrogenated” in the ingredients list; if you see that, there are trans fats in it…put that product back on the shelf.

Good fats come in the form on mono- and poly- unsaturated fats, which are found in nuts, seeds, avocado, olive oil, sh, and soybeans. ese fats do just the opposite of saturated and trans fats, balancing out HDL and LDL levels to make sure everything in your body is running how it should, especially your heart. You can think of good fats like putting the right type of oil in your car; when we get it then everything runs right, if not then we break down.

Don’t be afraid of fats, they are in food for a reason. As with all things, we just need to control what kinds we get and how much we are eating. Calories from fat can add up quick, so just watch your serving sizes and enjoy the bene ts of amazing heart health and the feeling of being a well-oiled machine.

If you have any questions that you would like answered regarding general health, nutrition, or tness please email Kyle @ [email protected]

Hiring a Caregiver Through an Agency

When you hire a caregiver for a family member or parent, how do you know who or what you’re getting? If you hire someone through an agency, you would expect that it’s done all the background checks. But can you trust the agencies?

AARP posted on its website the results of a study done by Dr. Lee Lindquist of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. Lindquist discovered that only half of placement agencies do any background screening or testing of caregivers. Only one-third do any drug testing or check out qualifications. And only one-third send supervisors out to check on caregivers.

Scary, isn’t it?Lindquist developed a list of 10 questions to

ask agencies if you’re considering using them to hire a caregiver:

1. How do they recruit caregivers and what are their requirements?

2. What kind of screenings do they do? What level of background check? Any drug testing?

3. Is there any training, such as certification in CPR?

4. How are the caregivers insured? Are they bonded?

5. What skills do the caregivers have? Are they skilled in transfers, dressing and bathing?

6. How does the agency assess these skills? Do they reply only on the applicant’s word?

7. What is their policy if caregivers can’t do what is stated in the contract?

8. If you’re unhappy with the care, will the agency provide a substitute?

9. Is there a supervisor who will evaluate the quality of the care? How often?

10. Is the supervision via phone or home visits?

Your best bets: Look for a caregiver through your church or support group. Ask others for recommendations. Contact seniors service agencies for recommendations.

Tough Road for GordonNever has four-time champion Je Gordon gone through a season like this one.Gordon, who turns 41 on Aug. 4, failed to make the Chase, NASCAR’s version of what other sports call playo s, in 2005, but that year he nished 11th in the nal point standings. At present he is 17th, winless and 89 points out of the top 10.In a span of seven races, the chance of Gordon reaching the top 10 (by regular season’s end) is almost nil. He could make the Chase as a wild card, but that almost certainly would require a pair of victories.Gordon nished sixth in the Lenox 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, but at this point, it makes little di erence. Gordon must win and knows it.Indianapolis Motor Speedway is next up on the schedule July 29. Gordon is the only NASCAR driver with four Brickyard victories. He can ill a ord to let this one pass without winning a h.“We’ve made some gains this year, and the speed has shown many times, just the results haven’t,” Gordon said. “But I think back to last year at Indianapolis and how good we were, and that’s what memory I’m going to have going in there this year; how can we be that good, and improve on our performance versus our competition in these next several weeks.”Gordon nished second to upset winner Paul Menard at Indianapolis last year.“ e urgency to win starts in Daytona in February, so we’re not doing anything di erent than we have all year long,” Gordon said. “We’re just trying to cross our T’s and dot our I’s and just do everything right. We know how hard it is to win, and we also know how easy it can be when you do things right and have a fast race car.“Is there urgency? Yeah, absolutely. One win is going to be great, but it’s still not going to get us into the Chase, I don’t believe. We know we’ve got to put a string of races together here to get ourselves in that opportunity to win more than one race.”It’s quite a challenge, even for one of NASCAR’s all-time greats, and the regular season is winding down.***Monte Dutton covers motorsports for e Gaston (N.C.) Gazette. E-mail Monte at [email protected].

THIS IS A HAMMERBy Samantha Mazzotta

When Rain Barrels Violate HOA Rules

Q: I keep a very nice lawn in the front and back of my house, along with a small kitchen garden and several flowers and shrubs. To water it -- especially in this dry, hot summer -- I try to use “gray” water as well as water collected in rain barrels placed under my downspouts. Recently I received a notice from my homeowners’ association that the rain barrels are against the rules and will have to be removed. How can I convince them that these are not just environmentally friendly, but also the reason I’m able to keep my yard green and growing as required by the HOA rules? -- Red-Taped in Roswell, Ga.

A: While I’m not an expert in dealing with homeowners’ associations, my first thought would be that you should review the most recent copy of your HOA’s rules. You’ll want to find out what rule or rules the association is referring to, and if rain barrels are specifically mentioned. You’ll also want to find out what your rights are as a member of the HOA, how you can appeal the notice, how long you have to comply and whether you can get that deadline extended.Several years ago, a friend of mine renting in a townhouse community related a story to me.

HOME TIP: HOAs can be either a headache or a boon to homeowners. Be aware of your HOA’s rules and bylaws, and be a participant in the association to advocate effectively for changes or improvements to your community.

• “When painting, write the name and brand of paint under the room’s light switch. If you ever need to go out and buy more, you will know where to start.” -- R.K. in Montana

• “My family has always used mayonnaise as a salve on minor burns. I heard you can use toothpaste too.” -- S.P., via e-mail

• Add these to the list of items to eliminate the odor of cooking cabbage: a heel of bread, a whole walnut or a pinch of baking soda.

• To travel with pleated skirts, use this packing trick: Turn the skirt inside out and straighten all the pleats. Then tape the bottom so that all the pleats are held together. Next, feed the skirt into a leg of pantyhose with the foot cut off. You’ll end up with a nice tube, which you can tuck into the sides of your luggage.

• “When traveling for more than a few days, put your plants in the bathtub with a little bit of water. They’ll soak it up, and you won’t have to have someone come over and water your plants. This will only work for a week or less, though.” -- J.M. in Louisiana

• “I keep grocery lists on my computer. When I am going shopping, I print out the list and fold the paper in half. Then I slip my coupons into the fold. Keeps them handy when I’m shopping.” -- A Reader in Maryland

The condo association only allowed owners to be members, not renters. And it had set up, early in the community’s history, rules that only owners could access the community amenities like the pool and clubhouse. The trouble was, more than 80 percent of the residents were renters -- meaning very few actual residents could use those amenities. My friend took action, attending association meetings every month and speaking each month, until she convinced the association to vote on whether to allow renters to use the amenities. The vote passed easily.I’m relating the above story as an example of what can be accomplished through persistence when it comes to these associations. Talk directly to the HOA, and talk with members of your community about the rain-barrel issue. What’s really bothering the association about your rain barrels? Is it an aesthetic issue? Is it worried about mosquitoes hatching in the rain barrels? There are solutions to the problem -- such as moving the rain barrels out of sight of the street, camouflaging them behind shrubbery and covering the barrels to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.Get out the word, too, about the environmental benefits of using rainwater, as well as the cost savings from doing so. Chances are many homeowners will agree with you -- but not if they don’t know about the issue.

Hot Cars and Pets Can be Deadly MixDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I can’t leave my dog “Shadie” alone in the house, so I have to take her with me when I go shopping. How long can I keep her inside my car before it gets too hot? My friend says 20 minutes, if I keep the windows cracked a little. -- Danielle F., Atlanta

DEAR DANIELLE: How about never? A parked car in the summer heat, even with the windows open a bit to let in airflow, can quickly heat up to extreme temperatures. Neither pets nor humans can stand the quick rise in temperature -- so being left in a parked car can prove fatal. If you’re planning to go out for

a few minutes to pick up some groceries or handle a quick errand, leave Shadie at home. Your dog should be able to handle a short period without you. If Shadie doesn’t handle it well, such as getting agitated, chewing up furniture or shoes, there are training solutions to solve that problem.Another solution, if you must bring your dog, is to bring along a trustworthy friend who is willing to sit in the car with the dog, with the motor running and the air conditioner on to keep it cool. Your friend will need to monitor Shadie while you shop. But this has its own pitfalls -- I don’t know many people willing to wait around while their friend is in the store.

Again, I can’t stress enough how important it is to not leave Shadie alone in the car, for even a few minutes. She easily could suffer heat exhaustion or stroke. Instead, invest some time helping to resolve Shadie’s separation anxiety so she’ll be happy and healthy at home.
