INTERESTING EDIBLESby Sarah Bates

Food nourishes your body just like Tidbits nourishes your brain! Get a double helping with these bits and bites that you might not have known about the things we eat and drink!• Did you know there are over 300 different

varieties of honey in North America alone? Honey, a natural energy restorer, was not only used by ancient cultures but it has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs. There have also been discoveries of 4,500 year old Egyptians carvings which are some of the earliest depictions of bee keeping.

• Do you know what a pluot is? It’s a complex hybrid between a plum and an apricot. It’s traits tend to be more plum-like, with a smooth skin. They are very sweet and intense in flavor and very juicy. They are not to be confused with an aprium, which is also a plum/apricot hybrid that is 1/4th plum and 3/4th apricot. Another plum/apricot hybrid is the plumcot. What’s a plum+apricot+peach? That one’s called a Peacotum.

• The island nation of Grenada in the Caribbean was named for the pomegranate. So was grenadine syrup and the grenade. All come from the Latin root word punica granatum, which means pomegranate.

GOING UP! (continued):• Wellington, New Zealand is a hilly city where private funiculars are

common. The public Wellington Cable Car (a funicular) is a widely recognized symbol of the city. It passes through three tunnels and over three bridges. The Wellington Cable Car Museum is at the top in the city of Kelburn.

• J.K. Graves, a former mayor, senator and banker in Dubuque, Iowa, wanted more time for lunch and a nap… living on top of the hill, his buggy ride to the bottom for work took too long. He had a one-car funicular built for his private use in 1882. In the late 1800s the Fenelon Place Elevator Co. formed and the funicular became public, revamped with a streetcar motor, turnstile and steel cables. In 1977 a major overhaul was done and it is still operational today. Great view of three states!

• The Fenelon Place Elevator is said to be the shortest and steepest scenic railway in the world. It is 296 ft. (90 m) in length and transports passengers 189 ft. (58 m) uphill.

• Another short line…said to be the shortest funicular in the world, is in Zagreb, Croatia. It was built in 1890, is 216.5 ft. (66 m) long and the difference from top to bottom is only 98.5 ft. (30 m).

• The Duquesne and Monongahela Inclines in Pittsburgh, PA were built in 1870 and 1877, respectively, and are still operational. Through the years Pittsburgh has had 17 funiculars with the Monongahela being the oldest continuously operating in the U.S.

• Also in Pennsylvania, the Johnstown Inclined Plane is large enough to haul wagons, horses, and vehicles up a 70.9% grade. It was built in 1889 when new residential areas opened uphill after a flood and has helped with flood rescues in 1936 and 1977.

GOING UP! (continued):

• The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway in Chattanooga, TN carries passengers one mile (1.6 km) on what is claimed to be the world’s steepest passenger railway, a 72.7% grade.

• Between 1883 and 1932, there were 29 funiculars in Valparaiso, Chile. It is the principal port and only large city in Chile built on hills. The fifteen funiculars in operation today are an integral part of the transit system.

• The Canadian side of Niagara Falls in Ontario has the Horseshoe Falls Incline. It does not descend into the gorge below the falls like past area funiculars. It was built in 1966 for access to businesses above the falls.

• The Funiculaire du Vieux Quèbec in Quebec City originally used a water ballast system of propulsion in 1879. It was converted to electrical power in 1907. It links the upper and lower parts of the only city in North America with historic city walls.

• The only water driven funicular still in good shape operating today is the Brom Jesus Funicular in Braga, Portugal.

• Several funiculars have been built in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado but the only one still operational is at Royal Gorge. It was difficult to build, with granite mountain walls looming around it. It descends 1500 ft. (457 m) to the Arkansas River with great views of the Royal Gorge Bridge overhead.

• The Katoomba Scenic Railway is part of a large privately-owned tourist attraction in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. It was built in the 1880s as part of a network of trams for a coal and shale mining operation.

TIDBITS ALL OVER THE WORLD:

AUSTRIA“Land of mountains, land on the river…” The first words of the Austrian National Anthem sing the praises of this beautiful, landlocked country in Europe.• Austria is in the Eastern Alps. The mountains cover 62%

of Austria with the highest point at 12,460 feet (3797 m).

• The official language, German, is spoken by about 90% of the residents.

• Austria was incorporated into Nazi Germany from 1938 to the end of World War II when the allies occupied the country in 1945.

• In 1955, Austria was declared a sovereign state and the occupation ended.

• Austria is one of six European countries that declared permanent neutrality and one of the few that included everlasting neutrality in its constitution.

• The red and white striped flag of Austria has been used since 1191. It was re-adopted after World War II.

• Vienna’s Tiergarten Schönbrunn is the oldest zoological garden in the world, founded in 1752. It recently opened a tree-top nature trail high above the zoo with views of the city as well.

• There are six national parks in Austria. The first was Hohe Tauern established in 1981. It is the largest nature preserve in Central Europe covering more than 444,789 acres (1800 km).

• Have you seen The Sound of Music? The hills that were “alive” and the real Von Trapp family were from Salzburg, Austria. It’s as beautiful as the movie!

• Salzburg is also well-known as the home of many famous composers. A statue of Mozart was unveiled in 1842 at Mozart Square.

• With the presence of so many musicians it’s no wonder that Austria is considered by many as the musical capital of the world.

• Vienna, the capital city, is located on the Danube River and has approximately 2 million people.

• Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Schoenberg, Gluck and Strauss are among the 2.5 million tombs in the Vienna Central Cemetery… more than the city’s population!

• The population of the entire country is about 8 million. It is bordered by eight countries.

• One of the greatest engineering feats of the 19th century was the Semmering Railway, built over the mountains between Gloggnitz and Simmering. It has 14 tunnels, 16 viaducts, 100 curved stone bridges and 11 small iron bridges. Still in operation after more than 150 years, it is a must-ride for tourists!

• PEZ candy was invented by Austrian Eduard Haas III in 1927 as an alternative to smoking. PEZ is short for peppermint in German. Twenty years later he invented the PEZ dispenser and it wasn’t until the 1950s that American sales started, cartoon tops were added and it was marketed for children.

• The white Lipizzaner Stallions train at the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. The breed dates back to when the Hapsburg Dynasty ruled Spain and Austria in the 16th century.
