Q: “Ugly Betty” is one of my favorite shows, and I especially love Vanessa Williams as Wilhelmina Slater. What has she been up to this summer during her break from the show? -- Haley J., via e-mailA: Vanessa has been a very busy woman. She played to sold-out audiences at the Tropicana in Atlantic City, released her eighth studio album called “The Real Thing,” just started back at work on the fourth season of “Ugly Betty” and is actively involved with the charitable education campaign called Express Success. Vanessa told me recently why she chose this particular campaign: to celebrate working women. She explains, “Dress for Success provides the opportunity for women who don’t have the means that I do to get proper training for the workforce, get some amazing clothing and be able to start on the path toward becoming successful women in business.” To find out how to donate or to see if there will be any events in your area, go to ExpressSuccessCampaign.com.***Q: Lisa Kudrow was my favorite performer on “Friends.” I’d love to know what she has been up to lately. -- Juliette F., Oriskany Falls, N.Y.A: Lisa currently stars as Dr. Fiona Wallice on “Web Therapy,” which is broadcast on LStudio.com. The show has received with rave reviews and features lots of familiar-face guest stars, including fellow “Friend” Courtney Cox Arquette, Rashida Jones, Victor Garber, Steven Weber and Alan Cumming, among others. An interesting side note: Prior to “Mad About You” and “Friends,” Lisa Kudrow was hired to play Frasier’s fiery radio producer, Roz, on the hit show “Frasier.” However, during rehearsals for the show, she and those involved knew that something wasn’t working in her performance, so she was let go. She was replaced by Peri Gilpin. However, one of the people working on “Frasier” also worked on “Friends” and suggested that she audition for the show.***Q: It seems like everything old is new again. First they made a movie version of “Transformers,” then “G.I. Joe.” What’s next? -- Steven W., Ashtabula, OhioA: Would you believe “Asteroids”? And yes, I do mean the arcade game. It seems that Universal Pictures has obtained the rights to the live-action movie of the popular Atari video game. While I’m interested to see how they will turn this into a feature film, I’ve always been partial to Ms. Pacman.***

If you suddenly lose your job, you’ll need to stop spending immediately and take the time to assess your financial position -- unless you do it ahead of time. Take the time now to position yourself so you spend as little cash as possible for at least a month after losing your income. This will give you time to think and get a handle on your situation. Here are some ideas:¥ Food is on the list of must-have items. Stock up on sale items with a long shelf life, such as canned vegetables, fruits, stews and meats. Drink mixes, powdered milk and boxed side dishes like macaroni and cheese need only to have water added. Keep track of expiration dates if you keep the food longer than a month. Use them up before expiration, and replace as you go.¥ Put aside essentials like toothpaste, bath soap, deodorant, laundry detergent and a few cans of oil for the car. Add in a new oil filter if you’re in a position to be able to change the oil yourself.¥ Utilities such as electricity, water and telephone -- can you pay ahead by a few months?Other things to do now:¥ Know within $10 just how much money you actually need to survive each month.¥ Update your resume. Get books from the library about how to create a good resume.¥ Check into networking groups in your area, and join one.¥ Make a list of social-services phone numbers, including local food pantries and meal centers. Know where and how you’ll apply for unemployment benefits.¥ If you don’t have a computer, learn to use the ones at the library. You’ll need them for your job hunt later.¥ Build up as much of an emergency fund as you can. Ideally you’ll have three to six months of salary banked for each wage earner in the household. If that sounds impossible, think about being down to your last $5. If worst comes to worst, what will you spend it on? Food ... or gas for the car to get to a job interview? Every dollar in your fund will count.¥ Find out how much unemployment pays in your area. That extra money will help stretch your emergency money.

Can caffeine cure Alzheimer’s disease? That’s what researchers are wondering. In 2006, at the Byrd Alzheimer’s Center and Research Institute in Tampa, Fla., caffeine was shown to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in mice that were specially bred to get it. Over time, the caffeine protected them in areas like memory and recognition. Here’s how they believe it works: The caffeine suppresses an abnormal protein called beta amyloid in the blood and brain -- at least in mice. That protein produces plaque that blocks nerve cells in the brain. Now, in 2009, scientists at two research centers in Florida have shown that a certain amount of caffeine (the equivalent of five cups per day) actually can reverse the effects of Alzheimer’s -- again, at least in mice. The protein levels were reduced significantly. In other words, it could be an actual treatment. Those of us who are familiar with the ravages of Alzheimer’s know what a blessing it would be to find a cure.As an initial test on humans, researchers already tested the blood levels of some seniors who don’t have Alzheimer’s, and the caffeine reduced the amyloid protein levels.I see a few problems with this. How many of us can handle five cups of coffee a day? Caffeine is a stimulant. Those of us with blood pressure or heart issues certainly shouldn’t try it, especially to the degree that the mice did.Still, according to the Byrd research, there’s some thought that caffeine also can reduce the risk of certain cancers and Parkinson’s disease.Until results of human clinical trials come out, there are other ways to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s: Stay mentally active, take care of blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and be sure your diet includes antioxidants.

I used to have money in my wallet, I swear, but lately it’s being drained like water from a bathtub. We had the big talk with our kids, the talk parents approach with sweat on their brow. The MONEY talk. The allowance we started giving them when they were younger, from the looks of my bank account, isn’t covering their basic entertainment, tithing and shopping needs.I’m hearing more often, “Mom, can I have some money?”“Dad, I want to go, but I don’t have any money.”One simple word explains it, they say, “Inflation.”It’s expensive to be a kid, after all.Somewhere along the way, we’d read or heard that children should receive money because they are a part of the family. We believed chores should be associated, so we told the kids when they were younger that they would receive money for doing chores around the house, but that part of the allowance was given to them just because.“Which part is for cleaning the bathroom and which part is ‘just because’ money,” they soon started asking. So the payment system in our house was in need of an overhaul. Before the talk with the kids, the husband and I tossed around how we approach the upcoming budget negotiations. We consulted friends about their methods of paying their children. I read books -- and found that some writers strongly believe that money shouldn’t be connected to chores. But we’ve always believed in child labor, and most of the books I read and parents we talked to do as well. The younger the kids realize that money is earned as a result of work (cleaning their bedrooms, keeping the house picked up, taking out the trash and helping with the yard) the better. After all, mom and dad have to work to earn money. So we sat down with the children, who were asked in advance to list their categories of spending and an estimated budget. As you can imagine Dad and I had to scale back numbers a bit. After realizing they were finally getting a raise after a decade, and wouldn’t have to band together with their classmates to start a Kids for Higher Pay union, they were a little more excited to do their jobs around the house. That is like real life isn’t it? We all feel a little more pride and eagerness in our work after receiving a raise.

Q: I heard that Aaron Spelling was married to actress Carolyn Jones (Morticia, “The Addams Family”). If true, when and how long were they married? -- Francis W., via e-mailA: Aaron and Carolyn were indeed man and wife from 1953-64. Prior to “The Addams Family,” Carolyn worked with Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Anthony Quinn. After she and Aaron divorced in 1964, Carolyn, a natural blonde, donned a coal-black, long-haired wig to portray her most iconic character, Morticia Addams.

FISHY FACTS (continued):• There are seven known species of gar fish in the world, all located in North and Central America. Alligator gars are the largest of this type of fish. They are located primarily in the Southeast United States in coastal areas. They can grow up to 10 ft (3 m) and can weight up to 300 lbs (140 kg). The females of the species can live up to 50 years, nearly twice as long as male gars.• Although similarly named, Queen angelfish and angelfish are different species of fish. Sometimes they will mate, producing a rare but natural hybrid of fish.• Do you know what a baleen is? A baleen is a keratin plate in the mouth of a baleen whale. Keratin is the substance that finger nails, hair and horns are made of. Baleen whales use these plates (often called whalebone) to filter food such as plankton or small fish. Baleen was once used in such everyday items as parasols and corsets and over hunting whales for their baleen has caused many species to become endangered.

baleen has caused many species to become endangered.• Ever heard that fish can’t swim backwards? This is true, but not entirely. Quite a few fish can swim backwards, but generally do not. Eels, however, often swim backwards and most fish that commonly swim backwards are members of the eel family.• You’ve probably heard this one too: a shark can’t stop swimming or it will die. The truth is a shark can’t stop breathing or it will die. To breathe they must constantly move water over their gills, meaning they must constantly force water through their mouths and over their gills. However, some species of sharks can rest where the current is strong enough to push water over their gills and some sharks have even developed gill muscles and can pump water over their gills without moving! One of these species is the nurse shark, which has spiracles (small openings in their skin) that pump water over their gills.

FISHY FACTS (continued):• Did you know that the sea horse is one of the only fish that can swim vertically?• If you are a fan of Comedy Central’s Colbert Report, you might already be familiar with the barreleye fish. The show might be for laughs but this fascinating fish isn’t a joke! There are two dark circular nodes on the front of its head which may look like its eyes, but they are actually its nostrils. Its eyes are really located within its translucent cranium - that’s right, it has clear skin. You can see right inside to its tubular eyes and brain. It’s too amazing not to see for yourself, so check it out by entering barreleye fish in your favorite search engine.• The world’s smallest fish is also on the translucent side. This transparent fish can be found in the swamps of Indonesia on the island of Sumatra. They live in highly acidic water, 100 times more acidic than rain. Not only are they the world’s smallest fish but they are also the smallest vertebrae. About the size of a fingernail clipping, this teeny swimmer

¥ “Take a dry cloth to wipe out the canister that cornstarch comes in. You can use these canisters for your child’s crayons, or when there’s a group of children, everyone can have his or her own crayons. You also can use these canisters for erasers, pins, buttons, beads, etc. It’s the yellow canister with the blue top.” -- D. in Virginia

¥ “You can easily muffle the noise of a tabletop sewing machine by setting it on a scrap of carpet. If you use a slightly larger piece of carpet, it will give you a place to put your scissors and other tools without them sliding around. You can even use a corner for pins if you glue a little square of cork on the back of the carpet.” -- J.J. in Florida

¥ To use every last drop of toothpaste in the tube, do this: As your tube dwindles, squeeze from the bottom, then roll up the excess tube. Secure it with a rubber band, clip or clothespin.

¥ “When I last moved, I used packing peanuts for some items. When I was taking photo frames down from the walls, I removed the nail for each item, stuck it into a packing peanut and taped the peanut to the back of the frame. At the new location, there was no searching for nails to rehang the pictures -- they were already at hand.” -- M.S. in New Mexico

they are also the smallest vertebrae. About the size of a fingernail clipping, this teeny swimmer was discovered by Maurice Kottelat of Sweden and Tan Heok Hui.• Apparently, fish can get seasick. One scientist, German Dr. Reinhold Hilbig, performed a series of tests that studied the effects of weightlessness in fish. Just how did he do this? Dr. Hilbig placed forty-nine fish in an aquarium inside a plane and sent it up into the sky. The plane pulled a steep dive to induce weightlessness. According to Dr. Hilbig, eight of the fish became disoriented and behaved much like humans do when they get seasick.• 40% of all fish species live in fresh water.

FISHY FACTS (continued):• The stonefish is the deadliest fish of all, so far as venom is concerned. Stonefish have caused death in humans when stepped on.• The coelacanth, a bony fish found in the Indian Ocean off the East African coast, was thought to have gone extinct at the end of the Cretaceous period 80 million years ago. It wasn’t until a living specimen was netted off the coast of South East Africa in 1938 that scientists realized they still existed! A second coelacanth was found again in 1952 and the fish has since been nicknamed the “living fossil.” They are cousins of both lungfish and modern reptiles.• Lungfish are a native fish of South America, Africa and Australia. They have no gills but instead have developed lungs - hence the creative name. Lungfish haven’t changed much since they first appeared millions of years ago. They have long, snake-like bodies which can grow up to the length of a grown man. Because of their lungs they can live with little to

LAST FACT:• Did you know that a group of herring is called a siege?

One night I was out at a restaurant, and the waiter brought a bowl of rice to the table. It grabbed my attention away from the dinner conversation because the presentation was so beautiful. The rice looked much more appealing than the rice I serve at home. Then I realized why. When I make rice, I always put it in my trusty white bowl. By contrast, this bowl was burnt orange on the outside and lapis blue on the inside. Stunning.Color is powerful. Fresh, bright colors can make you happy and fill you with energy. Yellows and oranges can warm you. Reds can get you all fired up, and greens and blues cool and soothe. When you see them alltogether, it’s a colorful fiesta of feelings. No wonder kids are so expressive with color.Watch a room of preschoolers fingerpaint and you’ll feel energy bouncing off the walls as they take paint out of the jar and swish and swoosh big, bold, colorful designs. Then they grab a fresh sheet of paper and start all over again! Bring color into a hot summer day with your preschooler by making a cool fan from a standard white shirt gift box, a wooden paint stick and a palette of markers. Then teach your young artists a simple trick to make the marker designs look like watercolors. Here’s how to make a flat-sided fan:1. Cut off and recycle the four sides of the top or bottom of a plain, white standard-size shirt gift box, leaving the large rectangle. Trim off all four sharp corners with scissors so that the fan won’t poke your skin when you wave it.2. For a handle, glue or tape a flat wooden paint stick in the middle of a shorter edge of the glossy side of the cardboard. Place the fan lengthwise in front of you with the handle coming out at the bottom. 3. Use markers (Mr. Sketch brand works well) to make simple designs all over the fan, such as zigzags, circles, dots and wavy lines. For fun, first practice making the designs in the air with your fingers and hands before drawing on the fan with markers. 4. Dip a paintbrush in water, and then brush on the design made by the markers. The water magically spreads the color, similar to madras plaid. When dry, decorate with craft feathers, if you wish.***Donna Erickson’s award-winning television series “Donna’s Day” airs on public television nationwide. Bowyer’s Got to Keep Up -- Or Else

Clint Bowyer finished 29th in the Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. He can’t afford another misstep in the eight races leading up to NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup.After the first six races of the season, Bowyer ranked second in points. Now he’s 16th and has eight weeks to work his way into the top 12 and make the Chase. Kasey Kahne presently occupies 12th place. Bowyer trails him by 135 points. He’s still got time, but it’s not going to be easy. Two years ago, Bowyer finished third in the Chase. Last year he was fifth. At age 30, Bowyer is one of NASCAR’s bright young drivers. He came up driving the dirt tracks near his hometown, Emporia, Kan. He won races in Loudon, N.H., in 2007 and Richmond, Va., in 2008.Now, however, Bowyer faces a stern challenge. A year ago his team, Richard Childress Racing, placed all three of its drivers in the Chase. This year, at least for now, all four (Casey Mears was added) are outside the top 12.What’s it going to take to make the Chase?“Just be consistent,” said Bowyer. “I’m fairly confident we can get at least two of us in. You know, (Jeff) Burton has been on a little bit of a down slide, but I feel like we, with the ‘33’ team, have really capitalized on learning some things and had a good, at least a solid, last few weeks.“I think we’ve stopped the bleeding, so to speak, on the bigger race tracks, the mile and a halfs (like the next stop, Chicagoland Speedway). ... We had some bad luck and had 250 or 300 points wiped out from right underneath of us there within a month, and it takes a while to get those points back.”Bowyer, by the way, is a fan of NASCAR’s new “double-file restarts” rule.“We are all about our fans,” he said. “We can’t do this without our fans, and we’ve got to make sure that we are putting on a good show for them. If they are enjoying our show and our product on race day, that’s what it’s all about.“So I feel like it’s added a new level of excitement and kind of given NASCAR a wake-up call. ... Those double-file restarts will definitely pick up the pace a little bit.”Bowyer hopes it’s his pace and not just the sport’s in general.***Monte Dutton has covered motorsports for The Gaston (N.C.)
