The Hidden Costs ofMajor Appliances

The true price of a major appliance is what itcosts to take out of the store, plus what itcosts to run it once you get it home. Sinceappliances can account for a hefty portion ofyour monthly power bill, the lower price of anappliance on sale might not be much of abargain if you end up paying higher electricbills for the next 10 years.

Before you buy a new major appliance, lookat the energy-rating info. Laws require thatmanufacturers put Energy Guide labels onall major appliances. The labels must includethe results of independent laboratory testsand information such as the capacity andestimated annual electrical consumption fora particular model, as well as forcomparable models. EnergyStar appliancesmust additionally be much more efficientthan other average models. (For moreinformation, see www.energystar.gov.)

The U.S. Department of Energy has a Website loaded with energy-saving information. At www.energysavers.gov, click onAppliances and Electronics, and look forEstimating Appliance and Home ElectronicEnergy Use. Apply the formula to calculatethe energy used by your current appliancesand electronics, as well as any you intend to

buy. Remember to add in your "phantom"loads: appliances that use electricity evenwhen they're turned off. Examples of this aretelevisions and computers. (To turn themcompletely off, cut the power via a powerstrip.) A big question among computer usersis whether to turn the computer off during theday or to leave it on. A rule of thumb is to turnoff the monitor if you won't use it for 20minutes, and both the monitor and computer ifyou won't use them for two hours.

At EERE.Energy.gov, you can download aPDF booklet that covers saving energy, yourhome's energy use, heating and cooling, windows, lighting, appliances, majorappliances shopping guide and more.

Before you buy a major appliance, look onlinefor ratings. If you subscribe to ConsumerReports, you can purchase yearly access to itsonline database of test results andrecommendations. (It's a few dollars less if youalready subscribe to the magazine.) You canalso buy a one-month subscription if you're notlikely to use the service for a whole year.

We've all heard stories about moms who go aboveand beyond the call of duty for their families, butwhen is too much too much? A classic example isthe story of the mom who was determined to cleanup the kitchen before calling 911, even though shehad symptoms of an impending heart attack.According to Dr. Margaret Beahrs -- a cardiologistat St. Paul Heart Clinic in St. Paul, Minn., and ad-vocate for women's cardiovascular health -- sto-ries abound of women who put their family to-dolist before seeking care. "Just last winter a grand-mother chose to get the holiday baking done ontime, ignoring the symptoms of chest discomfortand shortness of breath," she recalled. "Unfortu-nately, she waited too long and came into the hos-pital too late.""Women tend to put themselves and their hearthealth last during the holidays and family celebra-tions," said Dr. Beahrs. "Mother's Day is an idealtime to remind women to have a heart.Your familyneeds you for a long time!"Here's how the kids can give Mom a heart-healthybreak. Set the mood and encourage her to relaxon Mother's Day and throughout the year with col-orful stained-glass votive candleholders. The kidscan design the lovely gift in three easy steps usingold, recycled juice glasses, bright tissue paper andhousehold glue.

Here's how:1. Cut plain tissue paper into 1-inch squares, trianglesand rectangles. Older kids might want to try heart, fish, star and flower shapes as well.

2. Squeeze white household glue into a small bowland dilute with a few drops of water. Brush a light coatof the glue mixture on the outside of ajuice glass. In an overlapping pat-tern, apply the tissue shapesover the glue. Smooth outeach piece with your fingersas you go along.

3. When the outside of the glass iscovered, apply another coating or two of the glue mix-ture over all of the tissue paper. Let dry for severalhours. When dry, the tissue paper will look bright andcolorful once again.Set a votive candle inside and gift wrap it with love forMom on Mother's Day.

StrangeBUT TRUE

You may recall the character of Tarzan from movies and cartoons as somewhat lacking in language skills -- "Me Tarzan, you Jane."In the novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs, however, Tarzan was quite a linguist, speaking French, Latin, English, German, Dutch,Portuguese, several dialects of Arabic and ancient Mayan.

It was expatriate British novelist, poet, dramatist and travel writer Lawrence George Durrell who made the following observation:"There are only three things to be done with a woman. You can love her, suffer for her or turn her into literature."

Researchers have determined that infants tend to react strongly to the color red -- and to no other color.

If you suffer from entomophobia -- the fear of insects -- you might not want to read the following tidbit of information: Those whostudy such things say that there are more than a quarter of a million different species of beetle.

In the mid-1990s, a Thai man who kept peacocks was killed by one of his pets when the sole male in the flock clawed him viciously. In retribution, the man's family killed the bird and cooked it in curry.

Four-time Pulitzer-winner and American poet laureate Robert Frost was named after Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

The neck of the trumpeter swan is the same length as the rest of its body.

You might be surprised to learn that air conditioning in private homes was available in the United States as early as 1929. Ofcourse, that was the same year as the great stock market crash, so few people availed themselves of the newfangled -- and expensive-- convenience.

Logano Strugglingin Sprint Cup

Joey Logano is struggling as a rookie in theSprint Cup Series, which really shouldn'tcome as too much of a surprise, sinceLogano is all of 18 years old.Ever since Mark Martin began ravingabout this kid who is destined to winchampionships -- Logano was 13 or so atthe time -- Logano has been widelyregarded as a star of the future. He had towait for his 18th birthday -- he'll turn 19on May 24, by the way -- to race in theNationwide Series for the first time. Hewon his third race, at Kentucky Speedway.Logano became the first driver to win morethan once at the age of 18 with his Pepsi300 victory at Nashville Superspeedway. In his rookie Sprint Cup season, though, the Middletown, Conn., native hasstruggled. He ranks 35th in the pointstandings.

Asked how much the Nashville victory meant, Loganosaid, "More than you think, that's for sure. It's been a longtime coming since Kentucky last year, and we should havewon a lot more. To get this is what this whole teamneeded."

Logano bears the heavy burden of driving Joe GibbsRacing's No. 20 Toyota in Sprint Cup. The number --and team -- earned fame with Tony Stewart, who wonchampionships in 2002 and 2005. Logano was namedas Stewart's replacement when the veteran star took therole of both owner and driver at Stewart Haas Racing. In the current configuration, Cup cars are much more

difficult to drive than their Nationwide Seriescounterparts. Logano is still trying to make the

transition. But winning is important for any young

driver's psyche."It's big for me," said Logano. "It's anawesome confidence booster, for sure.Looking and saying, 'Hey, I can dothis; I am here for a reason; I can winraces.' That's big. Just to reassureyourself of that."I'm sure this is just going to keepcarrying on, and now we just have tobuild on this momentum and keep

going.".

Mother's Day

Ihave 16 years of experience as a mom, so you can understandwhy I thought, "easy A," when I signed up to take a college-level child-development class.

It didn't take me long to realize that experience doesn't make you anexpert, according to my textbook. My haughty parental confidencewas shredded by the time I finished the class. I went in thinking I hadthe parenting skills of "Supernanny" and came out feeling like JoanCrawford as portrayed in "Mommy Dearest.""We're going to have to start over," I told my husband. "We're doingthis all wrong."But how do you start over from the beginning? How do you rewind tothe moment your children were placed in your arms at the hospitalthrough the stages of weaning, walking, talking, potty training, sending off to school?"Don't tell the kids; they'll never know the difference," he said."Besides, they're almost raised."I left class each day with pangs of guilt for putting them in front of"Sesame Street" before their eyes could focus, not nursing them untilthey were old enough to play organized sports, making them sleep intheir own beds at night, which according to research, if we wouldhave had a "family bed" our kids would have been better sleepers at

an earlier age. (Moms don't get much deep sleep, but the children do.Side note: During the first year after having a baby, new mommies loseapproximately 700 hours of sleep, according to Louann Brizendine,M.D., author of "The Female Brain.") I think it's more like 7,000 hoursof sleep, but I'm no expert.Obviously, it's too late to correct my mistakes. My kids actually caughton a long time ago to my mothering bloopers. "We're not being raisedright," a line from the movie "Carolina" that my kids like to repeat toeach other when they disagree with my parenting skills. They figured out my flaws together one afternoon when they weresmall and discovered me hiding from them. We weren't playing a gameof hide-and-seek, although I was seeking a moment of solitude in mycloset with my blanket and pillow after a particularly hard day ofon-the-job parenting."Are moms supposed to hide from their children?" my daughter asked.Probably not, but Bill Cosby put it this way, "Look at anything thatgives birth: eventually it will run and hide. After a while even a motherelephant will run away from its child and hide. And when you considerhow hard it is for a mother elephant to hide, you can appreciate thedepth of her motivation."Most of us weren't raised by child-development experts, and most of uswill never qualify as one. We're too busy in the trenches, gainingexperience that doesn't necessarily make us experts in the end, butcertainly gives us a front-row seat to how difficult and important the jobis. And let's be honest, it doesn't take a child-development class to bringon the mother guilt.

It simply takes childbirth.

Happy Mother's Day.
