Consider State Parks for Budget Vacation

If fears about the economy have kept you and yourfamily from taking summer vacations for the past fewyears, you're not alone. But many families now areready to take short, inexpensive vacations.

Consider spending a few days or a week at a nearbystate park. Many parks have cabins, lodge rooms oreven yurts to rent for less than the price of motels. They might have signups for dates far in advance, butcampsites are generally more readily available.

Check Web sites for individual state parks, as not allstate parks are alike. The Web sites will includeinformation on the surrounding area and special parkactivities, such as bike/run events, volunteer day andcertain amenities that might not be available each daydue to maintenance.

Check the amenities offered. Some parks are ruraland rustic with few amenities. Some have swimming, hiking, water skiing and even golf. Those with lakesoften have boat or fishing gear rentals. Many havehistoric displays in learning centers, and ranger-ledprograms such as wildlife photography and tracking.

Look at Google satellite maps to get an idea of thepark's available space and layout. If there'sconsiderable open space, think about taking sportsequipment, such as baseball gear, a croquet set orbadminton net. Are there biking trails? Take bikes foreveryone. Look to thrift shops if you don't have these,or borrow from a neighbor. The same with tents andsleeping bags if you'll be camping -- acquire them asinexpensively as you can.

Call the park directly instead of making reservationsonline, especially if you want more deluxeaccommodations such as a cabin or lodge room.(Most online reservation sites will charge you a fee toreserve through them.) If the accommodations foryour chosen dates aren't available, ask to be put on await list. Or ask for other accommodationsuggestions. You may have to put down a deposit inadvance.

If you live near your state line, don't forget to checkthe parks in your neighboring state.

Find out whether your credit union or auto club hasany special discount coupons for state parks, or askthe park.

One of the best parts of vacationing at a state park:You'll save on gas as you won't have to drive longdistances to reach your destination.

EASTER (continued):

• Also on Fifth Avenue in New York,Easter bonnet displays are in shopwindows. This stems from a Europeantradition of decorating hats with

flowers to celebrate spring. This tradition is not asstrong as it once was. Check your old family picturesthough, and you may see yourself or your parents orgrandparents all dressed up in Easter finery includinghats and bonnets.

• Today, Easter eggs are the symbol that everyoneidentifies with the spring holiday. The egg is a symbolof new life and fertility.

• New life is associated with spring because warmertemperatures and abundant water from rain or meltingsnow brings grass, trees and flowers back to life. Easterlilies are a beautiful symbol of purity, hope and life. These lilies are native to Japan.

• Louis Houghton, a World War I soldier is credited withbeginning U.S. production of Easter lilies. He broughta suitcase load of bulbs to the southern coast of Oregonin 1919 and distributed them to his friends andneighbors.

• Following World War II, Japanese lily bulbs wereinaccessible to foreign customers. The value of Easterlily bulbs in the U.S. rose tremendously, and theybecame known as “white gold.” Growers, who grew thelilies to beautify their own yards, started businesses forthe cash crop. By 1945, there were about 1,200 growerson the Pacific coast from Vancouver, British Columbia,to Long Beach, California.

• Today almost all of the bulbs for the potted Easter lilymarket are grown by 10 farms in a small coastal areaalong the California-Oregon border. Appropriately, thisregion is called the Easter Lily Capital of the World.

• In the Ukraine city of Kolomyia, there is an egg-shapedbuilding, the Pysanka Museum, that showcasesUkrainian Easter eggs known as pysanky (plural;singular is psanka). The eggs are decorated usingbeeswax in a wax resist method, and this folk art hasbeen around for thousands of years. There are over10,000 pysanky in the museum that opened inSeptember 2000.

Warts Often Fade on Their Own

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Would you addressplantar warts? I've been told they're from a virus inthe body and that nothing can be done for them orkeep them from recurring. Is this so? -- D.W.

ANSWER: All warts, wherever they are, comefrom an infection with one of the more than 100human papillomaviruses -- HPV. Individualmembers of the HPV family have a preference forparticular body sites. Some head for the soles ofthe feet to cause plantar warts. "Plantar" is derivedfrom a Latin word meaning "sole of the foot."

If a plantar wart isn't kicking up a fuss, it can beleft alone. It's not going to do any harm. Manysuch warts disappear without any treatment. Somecan return, and there is not a whole lot to do aboutpreventing a second visit.

However, there is much to do about a plantar wartthat hurts. The method chosen for wart removalmust not leave a scar. A scar on the bottom of thefoot causes more trouble than does a wart.

Look on the shelves of any drugstore for wart-removal products that contain salicylic acid, andfollow the directions for application carefully. Bepatient. It takes more than one application to getrid of the wart.

Duct tape sometimes works. That's right -- ducttape, the tape you buy in a hardware store. Coverthe wart with a piece of it for six days. Remove thetape, soak the foot and then gently rub the wartwith a pumice stone, obtainable in drugstores.Reapply the tape after 12 hours. You might have torepeat this procedure for two months before thewart leaves.

If home remedies bring no success, the familydoctor can step in with more involved treatments.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past six months, Ihave had no energy. I teach third grade. My doctorchecked my thyroid gland, and it turns out it's notworking well. I am now taking replacementthyroid hormone. How long does it take for me torecover my former energy? Also, my cholesterolwas high. Is that part of this deal? -- M.O.

ANSWER: It can take three to six months for yourhormone level to reach a normal plateau. That'swhen you'll feel like your old self again. A personwith low thyroid hormone often has a rise in bloodcholesterol. The level will fall as soon as thereplacement hormone is working.

The booklet on thyroid problems discusses bothunder- and overactive thyroid glands. Readers canorder a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No.401W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for$4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printedname and address. Please allow four weeks fordelivery.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What causes skin tags? They hang from my neck and under my arms. --D.H.

ANSWER: Their cause isn't known. Your doctorcan clip them off without any fuss. By age 69, 60percent of us have one or more of them.

Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answerindividual letters, but he will incorporate them inhis column whenever possible. Readers may writehim or request an order form of available healthnewsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475.

It's hard to imagine what life was like beforethe widespread availability of refrigeration, isn'tit? Some people have decided to find out -- andyou might be surprised at how many. Although

EASTER (continued):

The world’s largest pysanka is located in thesmall town of Vegreville, Alberta. Thisartwork was chosen by the many Ukrainianimmigrants in the region to honor the RoyalCanadian Mounted Police in their centennialyear of 1975. It has inscriptions written inEnglish, Ukrainian, French and German:"This Pysanka (Easter Egg) symbolizes theharmony, vitality and culture of thecommunity and is dedicated as a tribute tothe One-Hundredth Anniversary of the RoyalCanadian Mounted Police who broughtpeace and security to the largest multi-cultural settlement in all of Canada."Professor Ronald Resch, of the University ofUtah, designed the giant egg, the firstcomputer modeling of an egg. It actuallyachieved nine architectural, mathematicaland engineering firsts! The giant pysankaturns in the wind like a weathervane. Now,that’s egg-straordinary!

• Eggs come from chickens, but another Eastersymbol, the rabbit, is known for its highfertility. German settlers in Pennsylvaniabrought the Easter bunny to America in the

1700s. Children hoped to find colored eggshidden in their caps and bonnets. Later, thebasket would become the container of choicefor Easter egg hunts of all types, both indoorsand out.

• Edible treats shaped like Easter bunniesoriginated in Germany during the 1800s.They were not the chocolate bunnies we findnow but were made instead of pastry andsugar.

• Today, the chocolate bunny is the prize ofmost Easter baskets. Whether hollow orsolid, dark or milk chocolate, in a box orwrapped in colored foil, they are immenselypopular. Did you know that over 90 millionare produced each year? By the way, 76% ofAmericans think the ears should be eatenfirst!

• Love them or hate them, Peeps® are also verypopular at Easter. In fact, they are the best-selling non-chocolate Easter candy. Peeps®
