What Does MoneyMean to You?

Does thinking about money make youhappy? Or does it make you stressed? Doyou work too hard, or not enough, and don'tunderstand why? Do you spend impulsively,or hate to part with a dime? A new book canhelp you understand the patterns of yourbehavior with money.

"The Secret Language of Money" by DavidKrueger and John Mann (McGraw Hill) issubtitled "How to Make Smarter FinancialDecisions and Live a Richer Life." Krueger, apsychiatrist, combines psychology, economics and neuroscience to addressquestions like the ones above.

Because there is a "secret" language ofmoney, many of us make mistakes. Nearlyevery chapter in the book contains a quiz, designed to help us understand why we dowhat we do. The quizzes are deceptivelysimple (such as "What is your currentincome, and what level of income would ittake to insure your happiness andcontentment?") It is in the explanations thatour patterns are revealed.

According to the book, all of us have a"money story," an unconscious tale we tellourselves about who we are, what moneymeans to us and how much we're worth. The

$&¢ Dollars and SenseBY David Uffington

problem is the secrets we keep from ourselvesabout money, whether it's how muchcredit-card debt we've really run up or the waywe rationalize an indulgent purchase. Forexample, when we make a risky purchase, there is a chemical component to our action, arush that comes in anticipation of making thepurchase. That same chemical reaction shutsdown the minute the purchase is made.Krueger shows us how to decipher what ouractions really mean.

"The Secret Language of Money" is for anyonewho's ever been in debt, been rich butunhappy, been caught in an impulse buy/returncycle with merchandise, made promises andbargains about cutting down on spending, been a workaholic or shopped to satisfyfeelings of envy or power. In other words,"Secret Language" has something foreveryone who spends money.

Something to think about: Name five thingsyou truly value. Then ask yourself which ofthose five things you would trade for money.Your answer says a lot about your relationshipwith money.

David Uffington regrets that he cannot personallyanswer reader questions, but will incorporate theminto his column whenever possible.Write to him incare of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail [email protected].

Tai Chi Has ManyHealth Benefits

Are you familiar with Tai Chi? I took just enoughclasses to realize what a wonderful exercise itcan be.

Tai Chi (pronounced tie-chee) has 19 gentle armmovements, called

"forms," done from onestanding pose withonly weight shiftsfrom one foot to theother while you dothe slowmovements. That, along withthe deepbreathing, isall thatneeds to belearned. After thatit just

requires a little practiceto smooth out the movements.

Tai Chi doesn't require any equipment or specialclothing, weight lifting, running or fast moving, andonce you learn it, the movements can be done athome.

What I especially appreciate are the health benefits.Research has shown that Tai Chi can help in therecovery of stroke patients who seek to strengthentheir muscles and regain their balance. A study atEmory University of 200 people above the age of 70found that 15 weeks of Tai Chi "significantly reduced"the risk of falls.

Another study found Tai Chi increased muscle strengthand shoulder flexibility, while yet another showed thatTai Chi is safe even for those who'd had moderateheart failure. Other research showed sleep benefitsand even increased mental health. A University ofIllinois study revealed that Tai Chi can increaseantibody protection after a flu shot. (Seniors tend not toget as much protection from flu shots.) Another benefitwas the ability to stand on one leg. Think about thatand what it means to your overall sense of balance. Inone study there was an 83 percent improvement.

If you consider taking Tai Chi classes, be sure to checkthe instructor's credentials: Experience really doesmatter. Someone with little experience might notunderstand the subtleties of the movements as theyapply to seniors.

It was American novelist, actor and politician Gore Vidal who made the followingobservation: "Today's public figures can no longer write their own speeches or books, and there is some evidence that they can't read them either."

Saba, an island in the Dutch West Indies, is the only place in the Caribbean whosenative population is predominantly blonde.

In Bohemia -- once a country, now a region within the Czech Republic -- it wasillegal in the 15th century to sell hops outside the country. In fact, it was consideredsuch a heinous crime that the punishment for violating the law was death.

The very first 9-1-1 emergency call was made on Feb. 16, 1968, in the small town of

Haleyville, Ala. It commemorates the event every year with a 9-1-1 festival.

Vinegar will dissolve the shell of a hard-boiled egg.

Those who study such things claim that between 10 percent and 20 percent of theUnion Army during the Civil War was under the age of 18. Records show that 127 ofthose soldiers enlisted at the tender age of 13.

Are you a somniloquist? You may be one without realizing it -- just ask yoursignificant other if you're not sure. He or she should be able to tell you if you have ahabit of talking in your sleep.

Much has been made of the epidemic of obesity in the United States. One study ofthe problem has turned up the following interesting comparison: It seems that theaverage portion of food served in America is 25 percent larger than that served inFrance..Thought for the Day: "A little government and a little luck are necessary in life, but only a fool trusts either of them." -- P.J.O'Rourke (c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Adoff of the bonnet (as the Brits would say) and hats off (as we Americans say)to Debbie Reynolds. At age 77 she is still beautiful, and very busy. At presentshe is taking her nightclub act to several places and working on a museum to

hold her collection of Hollywood costumes. Not only her own, but all she can collectfrom other stars of the past, including Marilyn Monroe's from"The Seven Year Itch." And from someone who has beenthere, when Debbie Reynolds is in a room, on stage or off,you KNOW she's there. If you're an Elvis Presley fan, Pelican Publishing has a newbook due out titled "The Genuine Elvis: Photos and UntoldStories About the King" by Ronnie McDowell, Edie Handand Joe Meadow. Many pictures, many untold storiesand everything else you can or can't imagine. It hits thebookstores July 1.Natalie Cole came through her kidney transplant oper-ation and is recuperating. However, she won't be tour-ing for some time. Her medics told her to "take it

easy" for a while, but that doesn't mean she can't vocal-ize and keep those "pipes" clear at home. In about four months,

she should be airing them in public once again.John Lithgow is back in action on the tube, joining the cast of "Dexter" on Showtime. He will play Walter Simmons, Miami's latest serial murderer and new nemesis of Dex-ter Morgan. And Kristin Chenowith is looking forward to playing the lead in "TwelveMen of Christmas," a Lifetime movie based on the novel "Decent Exposure."Big doings in Las Vegas at the CineVegas Awards when John Voight and WillemDafoe are feted for their body of work. Two finer actors you couldn't find anywhere, but not many have fathered an Angelina Jolie. And speaking of Angelina, I've been a Patricia Cornwell fan for years. Read all of hermystery books, and now I'm happy to learn Angelina has signed to make a moviebased on one of her books. Which one I don't know as yet. What I do know is Angieand Brad continue their happy relationship and house full of kids. Rumor was goinground that Brad and Angelina were buying the house in the New Orleans Garden Dis-trict where "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" was shot. I checked it out, and"t'aint so"!Many of you may remember the wonderful antics of mime Marcel Marceau. Nowcomes word that the battered top hat with the single red flower he always wore wenton the block at a Paris auction house. No word as yet as to how much it went for, butyou can bet your last American dollar it sold for big bucks!Offers pouring in for Chris Pine. While he decides, he's flexing his acting muscles onthe legitimate stage in west Los Angeles. Here's a big star who can ACT. Lots ofthose in the old days were big stars, but not big actors.

BITS 'N' PIECES: Looking back, it's hard to realize how many stars died in ac-cidents. Jayne Mansfield was killed in a car crash. Likewise James Dean. Carole Lombarddied in a plane crash. Vic Morrow killed by the rotor blade of a helicopter when filming "Twi-light Zone." Grace Kelly died a car crash. Leslie Howard was shot down during World War II.Natalie Wood drowned. Unfortunately, there were more.(c) 2009 King Features Synd., Inc.

Hornish Jr.Making Adjustment to

NASCARDOVER, Del. -- Sam Hornish Jr. is getting thehang of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Hornish, from Defiance, Ohio, has quite theimpressive resume. He is a former winner of theIndianapolis 500 and a three-time IndyCarchampion. When he struggled in NASCAR,many observers anticipated that he might returnto the open-wheel ranks, but the challenge ofadapting to stock cars appealed to him.

Though he was runner-up to Regan Smith in theRaybestos Rookie of the Year race, Hornish wasonly 35th in the final standings. He has stuck withthe NASCAR experiment, and recently hisperformances have notably improved. He finishedninth at Phoenix, sixth at Richmond, 16th atCharlotte and 13th in Dover's Autism Speaks 400.

Falling from the spotlight in NASCAR

didn't faze Hornish.

"I've never really considered myself somebodythat needed a bunch of attention," he said. "To beable to sit back and watch what other people aredoing, and not have all the pressure on you all thetime was

good. It enabled mesometimes to learn a little bit moreand also be able to kind of fly under the radar and

to be able to make my way in and out of certainareas.

"The better you do, the more consistently thatyou're in the top 15, the top 10, you're going toget more and more attention. Obviously, I wantthat because it means we're running well, but asfar as needing it, keeping the sponsor (Mobil 1)happy is the first thing, and then also keepingmyself happy as far as how we do on the racetrack are the two most important things."

Part of Hornish's transition has involvedadapting to NASCAR's longer races.

"I had all that experience running the Indycars," he said, "and a lot of times Iconsider those sprint races because they're200 laps or 200 miles. Everything that werun over here is 400 or 500 laps, or 400 or500 miles. Sometimes it's a matter of pacing

yourself to get to the end with all the fendersintact."

Afew years back I tried to become a gardener. I think of it as my big scienceexperiment. I did all right for a beginner, but still left a lot to be desired.

My squash came down with a fungus. Many times I had to snatch my cantaloupeand eggplant out of the mouths of hungry turtles, and one pumpkin survived out ofthe whole packet of seeds I planted. The lone pumpkin prematurely fell off the vinein August, as did our hopes for an autumn pumpkin on the front porch.I planted another garden the next spring and compulsively checked on its progress. The tomatoes didn't look much larger than when I planted them. Flower seedsgerminated, but I became frustrated by not seeing blossoms. A corn stalk sprouted. One out of 20 planted.I felt impatient. Sometimes I'm like that as a mother, too. This morning I passed by my son's bedroom and noticed that his drawers wereclosed, but every article of clothing he owns stuck out.The clothes I folded neatly yesterday are now wrinkled and smooshed."I don't know howmany times I have to show him how to do this," I grumbled as Irefolded.I picked up a wet towel in my daughter's bedroom floor, gritching, too, as I hung itup in the bathroom to dry.Keep your feet off the furniture. Remember to be helpful. Clean up your messes. These are lessons I've taught for years. But sometimes parenting does feel like onestep forward two steps back. And you wonder when you are going to see growth. If I'm going to keep this gardening comparison going, I must admit that when Istepped into my garden years back, I did see progress. The seeds became plants, and if I'd taken my measuring stick out I would have been amazed at just howquickly things really did grow.My disappointment comes when I expect too much, too quickly, and forget aboutthe joy that comes in watching something beautiful gradually unfold. In gardening and in parenting. My son's clothes may look as if he slept in them, but when I survey his room I seethat his bed is made, and I didn't have to ask him. He also fed his dog without beingtold. The towel may be mildewing on my daughter's bedroom floor, but I didn't have toask her to get up and get ready this morning for an appointment. She popped out ofbed and into the shower on her own. I also overheard her encouraging her littlebrother.Blossoms are there ... if I'm willing to look for them.
