Neatest TIDBITS® VISITS SOME INTERESTING LANDMARKS by Kathy Wolfe Across the continent, travelers can visit varied sights, from the beautiful to the unusual to the downright strange. This week, Tidbits focuses on a few of each. • Towering 605 feet (185 m) above Seattle is the Space Needle, built for the 1962 World’s Fair. With a foundation 30 feet (9.1 m) deep and 120 feet (36.5 m) across, 467 cement trucks worked an entire day to fill the hole. The paint colors were named to relate to the Fair’s theme of “Century 21” — The legs of the Needle were Astronaut White, the core painted Orbital Olive, Re-entry Red for the halo and Galaxy Gold for the sunburst and pagoda roof. At the time of its construction, the Space Needle was the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. It cost $4.5 million to build, but underwent a $20 million renovation in 2000. Bemidji, Minnesota, is home to the 18-foot- tall (5.5 m), 2.5-ton Paul Bunyan and his companion Babe the Blue Ox, built in 1937. The pair greets visitors near the Chamber of Commerce building on the shore of Lake Bemidji, which is said to be Paul Bunyan’s birthplace. The building also features the “Fireplace of States” built during the Great Depression, which includes stones from every American state and every Canadian province. Q: How do you predict rain in Seattle? A: If you can’t see the Space Needle, it’s raining. If you can see the Space Needle, it’s about to rain. OVER 4 MILLION Readers Weekly Nationwide! TIDBITS GETS FIRED UP ABOUT

NATIONAL BOSS DAYby Stanley Drummond

Bosses are people, too. (Really!) And every year on October 16, America pays tribute to them.• Actually, National Boss Day was created in

1958 by an Illinois secretary named Patricia Haroski. She chose October 16 because it was her father’s birthday. Her father also happened to be her boss at the time. Nevertheless, she felt that bosses in general were underappreciated, and registered the date with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as an official observance.

• Interestingly enough, a 2005 survey done by an international human resources consulting firm revealed that the majority of employees would not trade places with their boss. The primary reason given was the change that would result between them and their co-workers. They could no longer ignore or laugh at any slackers in their department; they’d be responsible for any poor performers.

• Hallmark started selling Boss Day cards in 1979. While they don’t reveal actual sales figures, they do disclose that the “holiday” is poised to break into the list of top 10 card-send-ing events within the next few years.

•On Feb. 6, 1820, the first organized immigration of freed slaves from the United States departs New York harbor on a journey to West Africa. The immigration was largely the work of the American Colonization Society. However, the expedition also was partially funded by the U.S. Congress, which appropriated $100,000 to be used in returning displaced Africans.

• On Feb. 5, 1878, Andre Citroen, later referred to as the Henry Ford of France for developing

his country's first mass-produced automobiles, is born in Paris. Citroen allowed potential customers to take his vehicles for a test drive -- then a new concept -- and also let people buy on credit.

• On Feb. 4, 1938, Walt Disney releases "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," his first full-length animated color feature. Naysayers warned Disney that audiences wouldn't sit through a feature-length cartoon fantasy about dwarfs. In June 2008, the American Film Institute chose it as the No. 1 animated film of all time.

• On Feb. 3, 1959, rising American rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson are killed when their small plane crashes in an Iowa cornfield. Singer Don McLean memorialized the musicians in the 1972 hit "American Pie," which refers to "the day the music died."

• On Feb. 1, 1974, Ted Bundy kills his second victim, marking Bundy as a serial killer. That summer Bundy attacked at least seven young women in Washington. He was caught in 1977 in Florida and eventually confessed to 36 murders. He was executed in 1989.

• On Feb. 2, 1980, details of ABSCAM, an FBI operation to uncover political corruption in the government, are released to the public. Thirty-one public officials were targeted for investigation. In the operation, FBI agents posed as representatives of Abdul Enterprises, Ltd., a fictional business owned by an Arab sheik.

• On Jan. 31, 1990, the Soviet Union's first McDonald's fast-food restaurant opens in Moscow. Throngs of people line up to pay the equivalent of several days' wages for Big Macs, shakes and french fries.

Inmates in Alcatraz Prison resided in cells that were 5 feet x 9 feet (1.5 m x 2.7 m). The prison was closed in March of 1963 because it became too expensive to operate, with costs of $10 per prisoner per day, compared to $3 at other federal prisons. Over the years, eight people were murdered by inmates, and five inmates committed suicide.

The prison was closed in March of 1963 because it became too expensive to operate, with costs of $10 per prisoner per day, compared to $3 at other federal prisons. Over the years, eight people were murdered by inmates, and five inmates committed suicide.

Q. How can you tell the hikers from the mule riders when they meet at the saloon at the end of the day?

A. The hikers will be sitting because they can’t stand up, and the riders will be standing because they can’t sit down.

Don’t make plans to scatter the ashes of your loved one from the Golden Gate Bridge. Under a California Penal Code, it is illegal to throw any type of object from any toll bridge. Anyone doing so will be charged with a misdemeanor.

Financial Success in 12 Simple Steps

If you need to re-set your New Year resolutions and start again, consider using the financial success list below from the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). There are 12 steps in all. Check off each one as it's accomplished, perhaps one a week.1. Track spending for a month. Write down every dime you spend. At the end of the month, you'll know where your money is really going.2. Create a budget you can live with, using the figures from the above step.3. Reduce your debt. Stop using credit cards and spending money until you have your finances under control.4. Commit to save. Put away

10 percent of your take-home pay, and save any extra money until you have an emergency fund.5. Review your credit report. By law you get one free report per year from each of the big three reporting agencies.

This is your opportunity to find errors and have them fixed. Call annualcreditreport.com at 1-877-322-8228 for your free reports. It will verify via phone who you are.6. Get your FICO score. Whether you're at the top or bottom of the scale, you need to know. If your number is less than it was in the past, you need to investigate why.7. Get organized. Whether it's a shoebox or a more elaborate setup, what's important is that you know where to find things.8. Stop incurring late fees. Pay your bills on time, ideally the day you get them. Not only do late payments cost you money in fees, but too many of them on your credit report will drop your credit score.9. Stop paying overdraft fees. The more organized you are

about your finances, the less likely you are to overdraw your account. 10. Contribute to Flexible Spending Accounts or Health Savings Accounts to lower your taxable income.11. Check your insurance and be sure it covers your current needs. Ask about discounts.12. Consider refinancing your mortgage. A lower interest rate can save you money in the long run. For more information go to the NFCC website at www.DebtAdvice.org, or call 1-800-388-2227 to find a certified financial counselor. The website also has a Twitter link with a helpful hint each day. They're worth reading.
