Q: I have a M.J. Hummel plate, “Apple Tree Boy and Girl — Little Companions,” that was issued in 1989. How much could I get for it? — Ellaline, Ormond Beach, Fla.

A: Your plate was introduced by the Danbury Mint and is part of a series, all originally available by mail order for $32.45 each. The complete set sold for $389.40, which included a display rack. According to Luckey’s Hummel Figurines & Plates: Identification and Price Guide by Carl F. Luckey and updated by Dean A. Genth (Krause, $27.95), your plate has a current value of about $25. Special is-sue plates are generally extremely difficult to sell on the secondary market.

• • •Q: I have four California Raisins figurines made in 1987,

but I am not sure what they are or what they might be worth. — Julie, Coolidge, Ariz.

A: The California Raisins are a close cousin to bean bag babies. They were a fad that became extremely col-lectible and then faded into obscurity. They were part of a 1980s grape-industry ad blitz. A quick check of the Internet revealed that a set of six recently sold for $7.

Blue-Cheese Sauce:In medium bowl, combine 4 ounces blue cheese, crumbled (1 cup);

1/2 cup mayonnaise; 1/2 cup plain lowfat yogurt; 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce; and 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper until blended. Makes about 1 1/2 cups sauce.

Creamy Honey-Mustard Sauce:In medium bowl, combine 2/3 cup Dijon mustard, 1/4 cup sour cream,

1/4 cup honey, and 3/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce until well-blended. Makes about 1 1/4 cups sauce.

Apricot-Balsamic Sauce:In medium bowl, combine 1 jar (12 ounces) apricot preserves, 2

tablespoons balsamic vinegar, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, and 1/4 tea-spoon freshly grated orange peel until well-blended. Makes about 1 1/4 cups sauce.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to pass on to your readers something I found that works very well for removing ticks: Icy-Hot. My little dog got a tick right in our own yard. I tried using a match, but I was so nervous that I might burn her. My sister told me to use Icy-Hot. I’m so relieved it did the trick! -- Diane O., Palmyra, N.Y.

DEAR DIANE: Interesting tip! One way that we used to remove ticks from our dogs many years ago was by smearing a dollop of Vaseline over the embedded tick, covering it completely. Eventually, the tick would suffo-cate or try to escape.

In recent years, however, veterinarians and disease-control experts have recommended against using Vaseline because it can take up to 48 hours for the tick to suffocate. Ticks need to be removed quickly -- within 24 hours or less. Why? Because after a day of feeding, the tick is completely engorged with blood. To keep feeding, it regurgitates that blood right

back into your pet -- and if the tick is carrying a disease like Lyme, your pet is likely to be infected.

Ditto with the old-fashioned match trick. When a lighted match is held to the tick, the tick often pulls out quickly -- but it tends to regurgitate as it does so.

So what’s the best way to remove ticks? Experts recommend tweezers, grabbing as close to the tick’s head as possible. Slowly pull the head out without twisting or jerking -- being careful not to squish the tick for the reasons listed above. If the tick’s head or part of its head breaks off in the skin, monitor your pet for a few days. It should be worked out by your pet’s own body, but if signs of infection appear, contact your veterinarian.

Graceville, Minnesota - February 16, 2008, Spokane, Washington) was an American singer and songwriter, best known for co-writing and first recording the rockabilly hit single “Hot Rod Lincoln”.

• Birthplace of Jack Conway (17 July 1887; Graceville, Minnesota - 11 October 1952; Pacific Palisades, California) director and film producer, as well as an actor of many films in the first half of the 20th century. His full name was Hugh Ryan Conway.

• Arthur Willard Davis (born June 6, 1942 in Graceville, Minnesota) is a former Major League Baseball first baseman..

Bishop John Ireland bought 80 acres for a town site and 120 acres adjacent to it for a farm colony in 1878. This purchase was made through his agent, Colonel J.R. King, and he named the town Graceville in honor of Bishop Grace who was Bishop of Saint Paul from 1859-1884. It was incorporated as a village by an act of the State Legislature and was approved February 18, 1881.

As early as 1863, Archbishop Ireland, then Father Ireland, became interested in the work of colonization of which he was destined to be the leader and director for a score of years. The purpose of the original organization, called the Irish Emigration Society, was to induce the famine and poverty-stricken families in Ireland to establish new homes here, free from the oppression of the English government. These people were the backbone of the initial Graceville colony.

This was the beginning of the extensive and successful colonization which brought hundreds of Irish, French, German, Belgian and Polish farmers to the area. Also, government lands were available and a railroad company was interested in these areas.

Colonization of an area means businesses also and many pioneers contributed a variety of industries. Even in its earliest days Graceville had many businesses including a butcher shop, a hardware business, a cigar factory and a pop factory. A cheese factory was opened by a Mr. Hastings. Due to the lack of interest in dairying among the farmers, and the difficulty of promoting sales, it was not successful. There were also a druggist, livery stable, general store and grain elevators.

At one time Graceville had two breweries, the Schlitz Company across from the old Milwaukee Stockyards, and the Golblatz Company located north of the James McRae residence in the south end of town. Carloads of ice were shipped from Ortonville for the beer warehouse and a carload lasted about three weeks.

The first schoolhouse was built in 1879. High school was not provided during the first years, but as the community grew, so did the school, and in 1898 the high school was established. A new brick structure was completed in 1929 and school bus service was inaugurated in 1936.
