DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I read a recent col-umn of yours where an owner said her cat tended to scratch and nip at her without warning. You said that the cat might have some socialization problems due to being a shelter pet, or might be experiencing some stress. Could I add that cats that are perfectly "normal" and loving also will scratch or nip if they are surprised or feel otherwise threatened. It's natu-ral. -- Cat Fan in Chicago

bat or scratch at strangers or even family members who reach out to them. Why? Well, like humans, cats have varying levels of "personal space," so to speak. And because they're fiercely independent, many have specific likes and dislikes -- opinions that can vary from family member to family member.

It's important to approach a cat, or any animal, with respect. Never sneak up behind or grab at a cat, and don't yell or make loud noises. Approach from an angle where it can see you clearly, and speak in a calm, reassuring voice. Hold out your hand for inspection, and let the cat come to you.

It's possible to figure out the most important sig-nals just from this move. If it sniffs at your hand, rubs its whiskers against it and backs away, the cat's not interested in being picked up or petted at the moment. If it approaches you after rubbing its whiskers against your hand, you're welcome to pet it. If it allows you to gently pick it up and doesn't struggle, great. If it jumps into your lap, you belong to it (just kidding -- sort of!).

This hasn't been a typical year for Jimmie Johnson ... yet.

Johnson, who will turn 36 on Sept. 17, has won 54 Sprint Cup races since he became a series regular in 2002. Then there's the matter of five championships. The last five.

This year Johnson has won once. The Pure Michigan 400 marked only his second runner-up finish.

On the other hand, Johnson, who grew up in El Cajon, Calif., ranks second in the point standings, and in his five championship seasons, he has never led the points at the end of the regular season, which is now just three races away.

"I'm very interested to see how this Chase goes," he said. "I think it's the hardest one to predict. It's going to be a close one. I don't know who to make the favorite. We'll just have to see how everybody responds to pressure when it really kicks up."

Johnson may not know whom to make the favorite, but it seems a bit absurd to pick anyone but ... him.

After all, no one else has ever won five straight championships at NASCAR's premier level. He could use a victory or two in the final three regular-season races, but his consistency to this point does rank him second, and consistency is important in the Chase.

Johnson was unable to hold off Kyle Busch at Michigan International Speedway, one of few tracks where he has never won. Afterward, he said his only regret was "not winning."

"I had every opportunity handed to me," he added. "(Crew chief) Chad (Knaus) made an awesome call to get me to pit road before the (next to last) caution (flag) came out. I had a second shot (after the final caution) at (Busch) on the restart and didn't have enough to get by.

"No excuses. I just wasn't able to get him today."Naturally, Johnson will rely on his experience in the Chase.

"You're go-ing to be tested in all areas," he said. "We all have weak-nesses, and we all have strengths.

"Really, the bottom line is being strong or adequate in your weak-est areas, and

• On Sept. 16, 1620, the Mayflower sails from Plymouth, England, bound for the New World with 102 passengers. The ship was headed for Virginia, but stormy weather and navigational errors forced the Mayflower off course. On Nov. 21, the "Pilgrims" arrived in Massachusetts.

• On Sept. 15, 1916, during the Battle of the Somme, the British launch a major offensive against the Germans, employing tanks for the first time. Although slow, the tanks showed promise and hundreds more were ordered.

• On Sept. 17, 1923, a fire threatens the University of California at Berkeley, kills two people and causes $10 million in damages. Homeowners fought the flames with garden hoses and buckets, and students from the University of California pitched in, as the fire came right to the campus gates.

• On Sept. 13, 1936, 17-year-old Cleveland Indians pitching ace "Rapid" Robert Feller strikes out 17 batters in a game, setting a new American League record. Feller allowed just two hits to help his team to a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia A’s.

• On Sept. 12, 1940, a collection of 600 prehistoric cave paintings and 1,500 engravings are discovered in a grotto near Montignac, France. The 5,000- to 17,000-

year-old paintings consisted mostly of animal representations. The Lascaux grotto's main cavern is 66 feet wide and 16 feet high.

• On Sept. 14, 1964, writer John Steinbeck is presented the U.S. Medal of Freedom. Steinbeck had already received numerous honors and awards for his writing, including the 1962 Nobel Prize, and the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for "The Grapes of Wrath." He also wrote "Tortilla Flat," "East of Eden" and the novella "Of Mice and Men."

• On Sept. 18, 1987, cesium-137 is removed from an abandoned c a n c e r - t h e r a p y machine in Brazil. Junkyard workers, fascinated by the glowing blue stone inside and completely unaware of its dangers, distributed pieces to friends, relatives and neighbors. Hundreds of people were eventually poisoned by radiation from the substance, and 40 contaminated homes had to be demolished.

As the new school year approaches, many student-ath-letes, as well as their parents are excited about the upcoming athletic events. Students are eager to demonstrate their new found strength and agility on the football field, as well as illustrate the teamwork necessary to successfully execute a set and spike play on the volleyball court. It is important for student-athletes to learn the basics of teamwork, but it is crucial for coaches, parents, and medical staff to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion.

The grid-iron days of school athletics never focused on the importance of recognizing head injuries, this can be at-tributed to the lack of understanding that concussions can and do occur in student athletes. As student athletes become bigger, stronger, and faster, the likelihood of head injuries will become more common. It is the role of the coaches, trainers, and the educational system to provide the appropriate and preventative training to the student athlete so that proper body mechanics are utilized during competition as to minimize the risk of injury. Also, prior to engaging in any form of physi-cal contact, each athlete should undergo a Standard Assess-ment of Concussion, also known as the SAC, to establish a baseline evaluation of each participant. The SAC evaluates

areas consisting of orientation, immediate memory, concentra-tion, delayed recall, neurologic screening, and exertional ma-neuvers.

A concussive brain injury, often referred as a milder form of a traumatic brain injury, usu-ally result from direct, physical

blows to the head, face, or neck. They may also develop as a result of direct impact to any portion of the body resulting in unexpected pressure being transmitted to the head. Concus-sions will cause short-lived changes in mental status, but do not necessarily result in any loss of consciousness. According to the American Academy of Neurology, concussions are graded from a level I to level III based upon the clinical presentation, duration of symptoms, and loss of consciousness.

Attentiveness on the part of coaches and parents is necessary in order to identify the possibility of a concussion. If your child or player demonstrates nausea or vomiting, dizziness, blurred vi-sion, confusion, amnesia, short term memory deficits, difficulty concentrating or remembering, slurred speech, or drowsiness they may have suffered a concussive brain injury

Any athlete who has potentially suffered a concussion should be medically evaluated. Each student should undergo a Standard Assessment of Concussion to determine if a change from baseline has occurred. If there is a decline in the SAC score this would be indicative of a mild traumatic brain injury suggestive of a con-cussion. A CT scan or MRI often do not demonstrate any acute abnormalities, but may be utilized at the discretion of each evaluating medical facility. A CT scan is the test of choice for emer-gency evaluation, where as an MRI is more effective in localizing injuries in those athletes with persistent and residual symptoms. Qualifying a patient for CT imaging is dependent upon the suspicion that a concussion oc-curred, along with demonstrating a

Glasgow Coma Scale score below 15, a suspected skull fracture, two or more episodes of vomiting, amnesia, or an extensive mechanism of injury.

Student athletes who have been medically evaluated and discharged from the local emergency room, must be continu-ously monitored for a period of 24 hours to ensure no knew symptoms have developed. Current guidelines as estab-lished by the American Academy of Neurology emphasize a mandatory step wise approach to recovery extending over a period of one week or more. The student athlete may only return once they are asymptomatic, and successfully pass the Standardized Assessment of Concussion evaluation.

The following chart illustrates the appropriate daily pro-tocol that must be followed in order for the student athlete to return to competition

It is critical for the student athlete to receive adequate time to recover from mild traumatic brain injuries; this ultimately will decrease the occurrence of future injuries due to second impact syndrome. Preventative education and the use of appropriate techniques will minimize injury and ultimately result in a successful season.

A: It has been more than a century since the first Teddy bears were manufactured in the United States. Most of the earliest ones had humps on their backs, elongated muzzles and jointed limbs. Named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt and his much publicized bear hunts in the American West, the toy bears quickly became one of this country’s favorite toys. Your bears are from a much later period, circa 1980s, and -- according to several collectors I contacted -- probably valued in the $50 to $75 range. As with most collectibles, the value of an item is based on rarity, condition and demand. I found your Sebastian bear listed on eBay for $55.

• • •Q: I have a book that was published during the late

1920s or early '30s entitled “The Child and His World.” Is it valuable? -- George, Albuquerque, N.M.

A: “The Child and His World” was a multi-volume set published by Midland Press in its New Human Interest Library series. Most volumes in this set sell in the $15 to $25 range, depending on condition.
