“There was buried treasure in the backyard just waiting to be dug up and the family knew it. So one day the granddaughter decided to excavate what her grandmother, an escapee from an oppressive Russian tsarist rule, put in the dirt years ago. Turns out it was $57,000 worth of Russian gold rubles.”
That’s just one story Colleen Rivera likes to tell. Witnessing such impressive finds is part of her job as a show manager for the Ohio Valley Gold & Silver Refinery’s traveling roadshow.
The Springfield, Ill.-based company is in Casper through Saturday looking to buy precious metals, jewelry, historical artifacts, antiques and other collectibles.
When someone brings in an item, The Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow evaluates it, makes an offer, then writes out a check sending that person home with some extra cash. Our job is to find buyers for items. We’re the middle man. We try to find someone in that market interested,” said Jeramy Weese, also a show manager for the Ohio Valley Refinery & Roadshow.
Weese said that when an individual brings in an item, the buyers will enter the details into their online system which connects with over 10,000 collectors. Items can range from coin collections to vintage guitars and everything in between. “If we can get someone to generate an offer, they agree to the terms and we give them a check on the spot. However, if more than one collector is interested, the offer can go higher,” explains Weese.
David Ford, a buyer for the company, said he enjoys traveling to different towns each week and finding new and interesting items. Just a few weeks back he had a woman come in who had bought a coin from the casino she worked at for a dollar the night before. She walked out that morning with a check for $50. She joked that this was the quickest $49 dollars she ever made.
So search through your closets and bring down your items to the La Quinta this week. Chances are, you will walk out with a little extra money in your pocket.

April 7 - 13, 2011
Deep down, some fans must know they're stark, raving mad.
It's in a good way. In fact, enthusiastic, outrageous, shirts-and-caps-col-lecting fans make the NASCAR world go around. The drink they're stirring is a margarita. Declaring the Reggie Jackson cliché obsolete on account of the statute of limitations, the fans, collectively, are the straw.
When that green flag waves, and Darrell Waltrip commences to hol-lerin', they are crazy as Charlie Sheen. Sheen wants some of what those folks are on.
God love 'em.But it's unreasonable to believe that either, a) NASCAR, or b) Rick
Hendrick doesn't want Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win. It's no more reasonable to believe that NASCAR wants Jimmie Johnson to win the Sprint Cup championship every year.
Even in Daytona Beach, Fla., most things are on the level. Many folks seem to think that the media has a bias. This is because it's
difficult for a journalist to think in the head of a fan, who thinks anyone whose opinion is different from his is biased. He or she is biased against him or her, and it's true, simply because he or she isn't, in fact, him or her.
He is on first. She is on second. Him is at short. Her is at third. Who's on the hill? I Don't Know. Likes to throw curves.
What has recently become apparent is that many fans think it's perfectly appropriate for members of the media to jump up and down, stomp and cheer wildly after a driver wins a race, which begs the question: Do they want the media to be biased, or don't they?
Alas, this profession has its own set of rules, same as a plumber, a pediatrician and a politician. OK, maybe politician is a poor example.
Being stark, raving crazy, it's natural for fans to think the media ought to be stark, rav-

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please explain urinary tract infections. Why do they recur? My doctor pre-scribes antibiotics, but shortly after I’ve completed taking them, I have another infection. What do you suggest as treatment? A pharmacist told me that I needed one or two days in the hospital to flush out my kidneys. -- S.A.
ANSWER: Urinary tract infections fall into one of two types. Upper tract infections indicate that the kidneys are involved. These are serious and less-common infections. Lower urinary tract infections are bladder infections, and they are very common. That’s the kind of infection I believe you have.
Women are prone to develop bladder infections for a number of reasons. One, the tube (urethra) that empties their bladder is much shorter than in males, so bacteria can gain access to the bladder more easily. Secondly, the opening of the female urethra is in a place with a large population of bacteria. And thirdly, sexual relations massage bacteria into the female urethra and bladder.
A bladder infection -- cystitis -- provokes frequent trips to the bathroom, an urgent need to quickly empty the bladder or suffer an accident, and pain, usually described as burning, during urination.
Women with repeated bladder infections need to be evaluated to see if the infection is a relapse (an infection with the same bacterium) or a new infection (infection with a different bacterium). The approach to treatment hinges on that infor-mation.
If a woman has another infection with the same bacterium, the doctor can put her on the same antibiotic for a longer period of time and can continue to treat long after symptoms have gone. The continued treatment is with a reduced antibiotic dose.
Another way to prevent a recurrence is to give the woman a prescription for an antibiotic that she takes after intercourse. Home remedies can be helpful. Drinking 8 ounces of cranberry juice daily benefits prevention of the most common cause of these infections. The kidney flush sug-gestion is not a good one.
The booklet on urinary tract infections delves deeper into these common maladies. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
• • •DEAR DR.
D O N O H U E : I have a small lump on the back of my left wrist. It’s soft and doesn’t hurt even when I push on it. It’s been there for at
least two months. I don’t remember injuring it. Lumps freak me out. My brother had bone cancer. When I see things sprouting on me, I think of cancer. Could it be? -- F.L.
ANSWER: It’s not likely to be bone cancer. A more likely bet is a ganglion. That’s a kind of cyst
filled with thick, gelatinous material. It com-municates with the wrist joint or with one of the wrist tendons. If it doesn’t hurt or interfere with wrist motion, you can ignore it. It if does, a doctor can remove it without much fuss. Many ganglion patients want their doctor to drain it. Drainage is possible, but the recurrence rate is very high.
• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual
letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.
