Hey, wait a minute! Paul Menard?Menard, 29, is ninth in the point standings.

In fact, he’s occupied that slot for two racesnow. He finished fifth in the Kobalt Tools 500at Atlanta Motor Speedway on March 7. In theseason’s other fourraces to date,

Menard’s finishes were 13th, 17th and 18th twice. He’s160 points out of the points lead.

“It’s been a good start,”said Menard, who drives theNo. 98 Petty MotorsportsFord. “The guys improvedthe cars a lot in the off-sea-son. We’ve got a good work-ing relationship with ‘Slug-ger’ (Labbe, his crew chief)and the merger betweenYates (Racing) and RPM(Richard Petty Motorsports)went pretty seamlessly.

“We haven’t had any real bad luck so far, so — knockon wood — hopefully we can keep that going and keephaving solid finishes.”

By the way, Menard, a native of Eau Claire, Wis., alsohappens to be ninth in the Nationwide Series. Like CarlEdwards and Brad Keselowski, he is running both seriesfull-time.

“Our last off weekend for the year was last week,” hesaid, referring to March 13-14. “We’re every weekenduntil November, which is what we love doing. We loveracing every weekend. I’ll probably miss out on a fewthings, but I’ll still have Sunday afternoons off when werun the Nationwide car (and Cup is idle).”

Menard’s formula hasn’t changed. The results have.“Last year we had the same goal of starting off run-

ning conservatively, but trying to finish in the top 20. ...This year, we’ve kind of had the same focus and justhaven’t had anything go wrong. We’re a lot better off inpoints and we’ll just try to keep that ball rolling,” he said.

For now, Menard will remain cautious.

“You’ve got to be aware of who is around you and whom you’re racing, andwhen people get mad at each other, stay out of their way,” he said at Bristol.“When we go to a place like Texas, you can probably do a little bit more, strategy-wise, to try and gain some track position.

“We’re not going to change our outlook.”

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Would you addressplantar warts? I’ve been told they’re from avirus in the body and that nothing can be donefor them or keep them from recurring. Is thisso? — D.W.

ANSWER: All warts, wherever they are, come from an infection with one of the morethan 100 human papillomaviruses — HPV. In-dividual members of the HPV family have apreference for particular body sites. Some headfor the soles of the feet to cause plantar warts.“Plantar” is derived from a Latin word mean-ing “sole of the foot.”

If a plantar wart isn’t kicking up a fuss, itcan be left alone. It’s not going to do any harm. Many such warts disappear without any treat-ment. Some can return, and there is not a wholelot to do about preventing a second visit.

However, there is much to do about a plan-tar wart that hurts. The method chosen for wartremoval must not leave a scar. A scar on thebottom of the foot causes more trouble thandoes a wart.

Look on the shelves of any drugstore forwart-removal products that contain salicylicacid, and follow the directions for applicationcarefully. Be patient. It takes more than oneapplication to get rid of the wart.

Duct tape sometimes works. That’s right —duct tape, the tape you buy in a hardware store.Cover the wart with a piece of it for six days.Remove the tape, soakthe foot and then gen-tly rub the wart with apumice stone, obtain-able in drugstores. Re-apply the tape after 12hours. You might haveto repeat this proce-dure for two monthsbefore the wart leaves.

If home remediesbring no success, thefamily doctor can stepin with more involvedtreatments.

Second-Guessing Dog’s DeathDEAR PAW’S CORNER: I recently lost my dog

“Mischa” to an illness, and I’m overwhelmed withsadness and guilt. Her death was very sudden; oneday she was fine and then she was not. I can’t helpwondering if there was anything I could have doneto prevent this from happening. Did I give her thewrong food? Was there something in hermedications she might have had a reaction to?I’ve had no answers from the vet. Am I wrong forconstantly second-guessing myself? Should I just getover it? — Devastated in Dallas

DEAR DEVASTED: First, I’m very sorry for your loss.Pets are so much a part of our families that losingthem can be incredibly difficult. “Getting over” theloss of a pet isn’t something anyone should be toldto do — it’s not unusual to feel sadness for a petyears after its death. A close friend of mine stillspeaks fondly of his dog King, who died when hewas a boy. And I often miss pets I lost years ago.

I personally feel that adults can grieve openlyfor pets in a way that they can’t grieve for humans. We have to bear up and be brave at the loss of arelative or friend, perhaps be the one who mustorganize everything. But for a lost pet there are nosuch barriers to just grieving for them.

On the other hand, you want answers forMischa’s sudden death. More questions should beasked of the veterinarian. What did her symptomspoint to — an infection, a reaction to something? That the vet has no answer at all is curious, but I’mnot familiar with the circumstances. Continuepressing for answers from the vet.
