There is a new step to be taken these days when it comes to guarding your credit: look yourself up online.

There are dozens of online sites that assemble public records and publicly available information and offer it for sale. Information that can be pur-chased includes telephone number, home address, real estate deed, professional licensing, lawsuits, births, divorces, marriages, deaths, household de-mographics. Bankruptcies, email address, felonies and tax liens can be included, and so much more. Some of them will provide a satellite map with an arrow pointing to your house.

Let’s say you look up your name on a site such as Intelius.com. You’ll likely find the name of your spouse and children next to yours. To your surprise you might find someone else’s name listed as well.

This might be your first clue that someone has stolen your identity and has taken out a loan or made a purchase, combining your infor-mation.

If this happens to you, act quickly.

Call one of the credit bureaus and instigate a credit alert. One is required to tell both of the other two, so you’re saved that step.

Go to creditreport.com and order your credit reports from all three bureaus. Read them carefully when they arrive.

While you’re waiting, opt out of as many online database sites as you can. Most of them don’t make it easy, but the fewer places that have your information, the better. Often there is an opt-out page, but you’ll have to hunt for it. You’ll need a photo file of your drivers license with the photo and number blacked out. You’ll have to upload or fax that information as well as specify which name you wish to have them delete. This can

Don’t Delay! Opt Out of Online Databases

be tricky: You might be listed as first name and last name, or your middle initial might be included, or your first two initials might be used instead of names. Ask for all of them to be deleted.

You’ll need to check again every few months. The reason: As more and more databases are shar-ing their records, or as you make transactions, your name could come up again. You’ll need to delete it every time you find your name appearing.

As a general rule, when you open a new account, opt out of having your information shared. It’s no guarantee that your name won’t get out, but it’s a small step.

• On Oct. 16, 1793, nine months after the execution of her husband, the former King Louis XVI of France, Marie-Antoinette follows him to the guillotine. At a time of economic turmoil in France, she lived extravagantly and responded to news that the French peasantry had no bread to eat by callously replying, "Let them eat cake."

• On Oct. 14, 1857, engineer and inventor Elwood Haynes is born in Portland, Ind. Haynes designed one of the very first American automobiles, the Haynes "Pioneer," a 820-pound, open-bodied, push-start vehicle with chain drive, a steering tiller, 28-inch bicycle wheels and a one-cylinder, one-horsepower gasoline engine. It had room for only one person and could not go in reverse.

• On Oct. 12, 1915, British nurse Edith Cavell is executed by a German firing squad in Brussels

for helping Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium during World War I. Cavell was honored with a statue in St. Martin's Place, just off London's Trafalgar Square.

• On Oct. 11, 1923, in a botched robbery attempt, three men blow up the mail car of a Southern Pacific train carrying passengers through southern Oregon. The explosives the thieves intended to use to open the mail car were too powerful, and the entire mail car was blown to bits.

• On Oct. 10, 1957, the Milwaukee Braves defeat the New York Yankees in seven games to win their first World Series since 1914. No one expected the Braves to win, as the New York team had already won the championship 21 times.

• On Oct. 15, 1965, David Miller, a young Catholic pacifist, becomes the first U.S. war protestor to burn his draft card in direct violation of a law forbidding such acts. He was later arrested, tried, found guilty and sentenced to two years imprisonment.

• On Oct. 13, 1975, singer Charlie Rich protests John Denver's big win at the Country Music Association Awards. Standing onstage to announce that year's winner, Rich opened the envelope, saw Denver's name written inside, reached into his pocket for a cigarette lighter and set the envelope on fire.

Q: My family owned one of the earliest television sets ever produced for consumers, a RCA Model TT-5. It is in a wooden cabinet and is the tabletop model. Almost everyone who sees it wants to buy it, but we have no idea of what it might be worth. Can you help me? -- Mike, Yonkers, N.Y.

A: Your television set -- with a five-channel tuner -- is extremely rare. It was manufactured in 1939, has

Old TV Set

a 5-inch screen and is worth about $15,000.• • •

Q: I found an old coffee grinder at a flea market. It is a mill that was manufactured by John M. Waddel of Greenfield, Ohio, and is the “improved” model 1050. I paid $50 for it, and think I probably got a bargain. -- Andy, Albuquerque, N.M.

A: Your coffee grinder, according to the original sales description, was designed as a good, low-priced mill “with burr and shell so constructed as to grind very fine.” It likely was manufactured during the 1890s and is probably worth in the $95 to $150 range. Collectors should be aware that grinders are still being manufactured, and reproductions of the older models are plentiful.

• • •Q: I recently inherited several dozen pieces of

costume jewelry, mostly from the 1940s and '50s. Some of the pieces are designs by Eisenberg, Duette, Corocraft and Natty Creations. Can you recommend someone who can help me establish the values of the various pieces? -- Sam, Norman, Okla.

A: Janet Lawwill is an expert who can help you. She buys, sells and appraises vintage costume jewelry as well as estate pieces. Her contact information is P.O. Box 36269, Tucson, AZ 85740; www.sparklz.com; and [email protected]. A good reference is Warman’s Vintage Jewelry: Identification and Price Guide, by Leigh Leshner (Krause, $24.99).

Q: With the Emmy Awards a recent memory -- and Jane Lynch doing a fabulous job hosting -- I was wondering if you could tell me who will be the host for the next Academy Awards? -- Deidre S., via e-mail

A: Actor/comedian Eddie Murphy, 50, has been selected to host the 84th annual Academy Awards. The ceremony, which is to be held Feb. 12, 2012, will mark the first time that the fun-nyman has hosted the show. His selection as the only host marks a return to the single-host format, which has gone by the wayside in re-cent years as the Academy opted for multiple hosts -- some choices successful (Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin) and some not so successful (James Franco and Anne Hathaway). Eddie says he is “enormously honored” to be given hosting duties, and I’m excited to see what he has in store for viewers.

• • •Q: I read in your column a few months back

that Alicia Silverstone had given birth to a son, and it got me to thinking if she has plans to re-turn to the big, or small, screen soon? -- Darren F., Portland, Ore.

A: Alicia returns to her comedic roots with the help of Amy Heckerling, who also gave the beautiful actress her big break when she was chosen to portray Cher in the classic high-school comedy “Clueless.” With Amy writing and directing and Alicia starring, the new film “Vamps” is gearing up to bring to the new influx of vampire movies what “Clueless” brought to high-school-comedy movies.

“Vamps” centers on Alicia (“Goody”) and Krysten Ritter (“Stacy”) as they try to live as

“good” vampires in New York City. “Vamps” also stars Sigourney Weaver and Malcolm Mc-Dowell, and should hit theaters some time next year.

• • •Q: I’m so glad

that “The Mental-ist” has returned for its fourth sea-son, and I wanted to know when the previous season would be out on DVD. -- Steven S., Akron, Ohio

A: Simon Baker and the rest of the crew have their work cut out for them this season, but now you can relive season three -- which proved to be spellbinding and suspenseful in its own right -- anytime you’d like at home, as Warner Home Video recently released it on DVD. “The Mental-ist: The Complete Third Season” is a five-disc collection featuring all 24 episodes, plus two featurettes and some unaired scenes.

• • •Q: I know you’re a fan of “Conspiracy Theory

with Jesse Ventura,” so you might be able to tell me: Will it be back for a third season? -- Patrick L., via e-mail

A: I am thrilled to report that truTV recently announced that an eight-episode third season of “Conspiracy Theory” will air in 2012, with Jesse at the helm and June Sarpong at his right hand, along with newcomers Tyrel Ventura (Jesse’s son) and Sean Stone (Oliver Stone’s son). Like me, I’m sure you can’t wait to see a new season of myth-debunking, truth-seeking and Ventura-style entertainment.
