Cook The Louisiana Purchase has been de- scribed as the “greatest deal in real estate history.” Real estate agents today would cringe at the thought of how small the commission would have been considering the acreage! In 1682 French explorer René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle claimed all of the territory drained by the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico to Cana- da for France. He named it Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV. When the French and Indian Wars ended in 1763 a treaty was signed establishing control over the Louisiana Territory west of the Mississippi River to Spain. Thomas Jefferson was President when the United States purchased the Louisi- ana Territory from France over a century later on May 2, 1803. Did you know that it was only twenty days before the pur- chase that the territory was transferred from Spain to France? Pretty quick changes! The official ceremonies for the transfer of Louisiana from Spain to France on No- vember 30, 1803 and then from France to the U.S. on December 20, 1803 were held in The Cabildo Sala Capitular (Capi- tol Room) in New Orleans. The Cabildo now houses the Louisiana State Muse- um. The huge purchase started as a negotia- tion for New Orleans and Western Flor- ida, which actually stretched across the Gulf Coast to New Orleans and Baton Rouge at the time. Access to the port of New Orleans and the Mississippi River for trade and sustainability of the new United States depended on this. continued on page 2! TIDBITS® LOOKS AT THE HUGELOUISIANA PURCHASE

by Patricia L. Cook

The Louisiana Purchase has been de-scribed as the “greatest deal in real estate history.” Real estate agents today would cringe at the thought of how small the commission would have been considering the acreage!

In 1682 French explorer René-Robert •Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle claimed all of the territory drained by the Mississippi River from the Gulf of Mexico to Cana-da for France. He named it Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV.When the French and Indian Wars ended •in 1763 a treaty was signed establishing control over the Louisiana Territory west of the Mississippi River to Spain. Thomas Jefferson was President when •the United States purchased the Louisi-ana Territory from France over a century later on May 2, 1803. Did you know that it was only twenty days before the pur-chase that the territory was transferred from Spain to France? Pretty quick changes!

Theofficialceremoniesforthetransferof•Louisiana from Spain to France on No-vember 30, 1803 and then from France to the U.S. on December 20, 1803 were held in The Cabildo Sala Capitular (Capi-tol Room) in New Orleans. Another place to visit that has a lot of history •about the Louisiana Purchase is Louisiana Purchase State Park, but it’s in Arkansas. A National Historic Landmark is at the junc-tion of Lee, Monroe and Phillips Counties to mark the initial point from which surveys of the property acquired in the Louisiana Purchase were initiated. Two surveyors in 1921 discovered the gum trees that were markedbythefirstsurveyorsin1815.In the history of the United States, the Lou-•isiana Purchase agreement is considered by many to be second only to the Declara-tion of Independence in importance.

LOUISIANA PURCHASE (continued)The purchase of the Louisiana territory •was for 827,987 square miles (2,144,476 sqkm)foronly$15,000,000!Eveninthosedays it was a super deal! This acquisition doubled the size of the ‘new” country and greatly increased its status and economic power. President Jefferson had appointed Rob-•ert R. Livingston, U.S. Minister to France and authorized him to purchase the City of New Orleans, portions of the east bank of the Mississippi River and free navigation of the river to allow for U.S. commerce. He was only authorized to spend up to $2,000,000. Now, he didn’t have email, a cell phone (or any phone for that matter!) so when news started leaking about pos-sible revocation of the use of the port of New Orleans, decisions had to be made. President Jefferson actually sent a special •envoy, James Monroe, to assist Livingston and boosted the authorized spending to $10,000,000. When negotiations started, quick decisions were necessary.N a p o l e o n •Bonaparte, the leader of France, decided he wanted to “unload” the en-tire Louisiana Ter-ritory! His minis-ters were ordered tofindoutwhattheU.S. was willing to pay for the entire area. Livingston and Monroe were confused and not sure what to do since this was beyond their authority. With quick thinking, knowing it could take months to get approval from the president, they de-cided to open immediate negotiations. Smart move, boys! The reason Napoleon wanted to make •such a fast sale was that he wanted to boost his powerful army in Europe. Headded the money from the sale of the Lou-isiana Territory to his war chest. Between 1805 and 1807 he becamemaster overmostofEurope.Political posturing occurred then just as it •does now. The Federalist Party, Jefferson’s opponent, was totally against the huge purchase. It helped the U.S. relations with FrancebutdefinitelyhurtstandingwithBrit-ain. There were even plans for some of the northern states to secede from the United States. They considered the western real estate to be worthless desert and were not for westward expansion. Hmmm…wonder what they would say today?! The Louisiana Purchase lands contained •all or parts of present-day Arkansas, Mis-

souri, Iowa, Minnesota west of the Missis-sippi River, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, nearly all of Kan-sas, the parts of Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado east of the Rocky Mountains, the portions of southern Manitoba, southern Saskatchewan and southern Alberta that drain into the Missouri River, and Louisi-ana on both sides of the Mississippi River, including the most important city of New Orleans.New Orleans was founded by the French •in 1718 and its location as the southern-most major city on the Mississippi River made it extremely valuable. It was made the capital of New France in 1722. Spain gained control in 1763 but French influ-ence still, to this day, remains strong. A lot oftheFrenchinfluencecamefromAcadi-ans, who were Canadians who refused to pledgeallegiance to theKingofEnglandand came south. Cajuns are the descen-dents of the Acadians.New Orleans is old, but it is not the old-•est city in the state. The oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase is Natchitoches (pronounced Nack-a-tish), in northwest Louisiana. It was established by the French four years before New Orleans in 1714. The beautiful brick Front Street with historic buildings dating from the 1800s overlooks Cane River Lake, which originally was part of the Red River, until the river decided to change its course. A 33-block area of the city is a National His-toric Landmark District, with many historic homes, churches, and commercial build-ings.The best time to visit Natchitoches is when •the “City of Lights” is all lit up at its annual Christmas Festival. The festival has been heldthefirstweekendofDecembersince1927.TheChristmas lights that reflect inCaneRiverLakestayonthroughthefirstweek in January. One more thing about Natchitoches – did •you see the movie, Steel Magnolias? It wasbasedonatruestoryandfilmeden-tirely in Natchitoches in 1989.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Change is still dominant for Rams and Ewes, both in theworkplace and their private lives. This is also a good time to look at a possible relocation if that has been one of your goals.TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Doing things for others is what you do well. But don’t forget that Bovines thrive on the arts, so make some time for yourself to indulge your passion for music and artistic expressions.GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) While the Ro-mantic Twin considers where to go for his or her upcoming vacation, the Practical Twin will start making travel plans now to take advan-tage of some great bargains.CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your sensitive naturehelpsyoudealwithadifficultemotionalsituation. Be patient and continue to show your sincere support wherever (and for whomever) it is needed.LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re making progress as you move through some unfamil-iar territory. And while there might be a misstep or two along the way, overall you’re heading in the right direction. Good luck.VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Some good news arrives -- and just in time to re-mind you that you’re making progress. Per-haps things aren’t moving as quickly as you’d prefer, but they’re moving nevertheless.LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) This is a good week to step back and assess the facts that have recently emerged to see where they can be used to your advantage. Also, don’t hesitate to make changes where necessary.SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You should begin to experience some support from those who now agree with your point of view. This should help counter the remaining objections from die-hard skeptics.SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21)Don’t letyouraimbedeflectedby trivialmatters as you try to resolve a confusing situ-ation.Taketimetofindandthoroughlyassessthe facts before making any decision.CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The possibility of moving to another location has come up. But before you dismiss it as un-workable, it’s worth checking out just in case it does have some merit after all.AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) New relationships -- personal or work-related -- show mixed signals. Best to assume noth-ing. Let things play themselves out until you have something substantive to work with.PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your abil-ity to make needed changes without causing too much, if any, negative ripple effect comes in handy when dealing with a sensitive matter either on the job or in the family.BORN THIS WEEK: Although you like things to go smoothly, you’re not shy about making waves when you believe the situation calls for it.

A social worker who had recently trans-ferred from the big city to the mountains was touring her new territory. She came upon the tiniest cabin she had ever seen. Intrigued, she knocked on the door. “Anybody home?” A child’s voice answered, “Yep.” “Is your father there?” “Pa? Nope, he left before Ma came in.” “Well, is your mother there?” “Nope, Ma left just before I got here.” “Are you never to-gether as a family?” “Sure, but not here. This is the outhouse!”Jerry is recovering from day surgery when a nurse asks him how he is feeling. “I’m OK, but I didn’t like the four-letter word the doctor used in surgery,” he answers. “What did he say?” asks the nurse. “OOPS!”A mother takes her son to a psychiatrist and says, “Doctor, I’d like you to evaluate my 13-year-old son.” “He’s suffering from a tran-sient psychosis with an intermittent rage dis-order, punctuated by episodic radical mood swings, but his prognosis is good for full re-covery.” “How can you say all that without even meeting him?” “Didn’t you say he was 13?”My wife and I went to a “Dude Ranch” while in Texas. “Darling, shh,” said her mother. “Calm down and tell me what he said that was so awful.” “Oh, Mama, it’s so embarrassing,” cried the still sobbing bride. “He said words like COOK, IRON, WASH, DUST!”A middle-aged man was waiting for the bus. Hearing Solution FactsMore than25million people in theUnitedStates have a hearing loss and have never tried a hearing aid as a solution. Here are some of the main reasons why individuals did not pursue help.

Inadequate Information:1. Many people are not aware they have a significanthearing loss and therefore are in need of information. Most hearing loss is acquired gradually. This slow progression allows individuals and family members to adapt to the loss without realizing it. Stigma and Cosmetics:2. Many individuals believe that people will view them as less competent, less attractive, or old as a result of using a hearing aid. Cosmetics no longer are a barrier to hearing aid use. With the advances of“openfit”technologyhearingaidsarenow virtually invisible. Hearing aids now come in a variety of colors as well to match hair color.Misdirected Medical Guidance:3. Many well meaning physicians give out inappropriate information regarding hearing loss and the treatments available, advising patients that they are not a good candidate for hearing aids if they have hearing loss in one ear only, if they

have “nerve deafness”, or if they can communicate in quiet. All three of these situations are now treatable with properly fithearingaids. Not Realizing the Importance of 4. Hearing: Another reason for rejection of hearing aids is people have forgotten how important hearing is to their quality of life. We live in a noisy world where communication is key. Individuals who live with untreated hearing loss often withdraw from social situations, have increased anxiety, feel isolated, and can suffer from depression. The Erroneous Belief that Hearing 5. Aids Don’t Work: Many people judge hearing aids based on what they’ve seen their grandparents wear - old technology. Recent research indicated that 90% of hearing aidwearerswere satisfiedwiththeir hearing aids and 93% of those same individuals stated their hearing aids had improved their quality of life. With new programmable digital chips and directional microphones satisfaction in noisy environments has improved as well. With“openfit”technologytheuserhasamorenaturalsoundquality, thefitis more comfortable, and there is less whistling (feedback).Unrecognized Value:6. Most individuals

don’t understand that hearing loss can restrict more than communication. Properly fit hearing aids have beenshown to increase earning potential, improve relationships, reduce difficultycommunicating, reduce frustration, enhance emotional stability, and increase the likelihood of attending social activities.Price: 7. Although hearing aids are available in a range of prices some individuals with hearing loss do not have the disposable income enabling them to purchase hearing aids.
