TAKE A TIDBITS TRIP ABOARD THE
DREAMLAND EXPRESSby Victoria Westlane
Daydreams, pipe dreams, nightmares, and other such visions… This week’s Tidbits ex-amines those subconscious “movies” in our heads.
Humans sleep in different “stages,” and it •is during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage when we dream. REM sleep occurs about every 90 minutes, and the resultant dreams last longer during the later cycles of sleep. We typically experience our lon-gest and most vivid dreams during the two hours just prior to waking up. What’s more, the body is temporarily paralyzed during REM sleep. The “imagination” por-tion of the brain is extra-active during this sleep cycle, so the parts of the brain that control our muscles shut down so that the sleeper doesn’t become physically over-active during a vivid dream.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have •a Dream” speech was delivered from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Wash-ington, D.C. on August 28, 1963. Michi-gan residents, though, had been given a “sneak preview” of the speech two months earlier. Dr. King used key portions of his “Dream” oratory during a civil rights march along Detroit’s Woodward Avenue.Three days before his death, Abraham •Lincoln told his wife about a disturbing dream he’d experienced the week before. In the dream, he was wandering around the White House when he heard the sound ofpitifulweeping.Atfirst, hecouldn’tfindthe source of the noise. Upon entering the East Room, he saw a group of mourners sobbing around a coffin. “Who is that?”he asked a soldier standing guard. “The President,” the soldier replied. “He was killed by an assassin.”

One of the most common recurring dreams •is being caught in a public place wearing little (or nothing). Naturally, most of us are embarrassed during these dreams, but one company decided to “empower” women by using that image in an ad cam-paign. In 1949, the Maidenform company introduced a series of print ads depicting beautiful models wearing brassieres in-stead of blouses. They were pictured in a variety of situations that were described by captions, such as “I dreamed I went to the circus in my Maidenform bra.”MadameC.J.Walker was the first self-•made female millionaire in the United States. Walker lost most of her hair due to a combination of poor nutrition and antique hair-straightening methods. In a dream, a man came up to her and dic-tated a list of ingredients. Once awake, she copied down the list and discussed it with a pharmacist friend. Experimenta-tion led them to the creation of Wonderful Hair Grower, a salve that Walker person-ally sold door-to-door to other African-American women. The product ultimately launched her cosmetics empire.
THE DREAMLAND EXPRESS (continued)
While recording their multi-platinum al-•bum Rumours, the members of Fleet-wood Mac were in the midst of assorted romantic entanglements. Arguments be-came commonplace in the studio, and one day, Stevie Nicks wandered off to a separate studio to soothe herself by play-ing piano. A half-hour later, she came up with the song “Dreams.” Keyboardist Christine McVie dismissed the tune as “boring” because it only had three chords. But the band recorded the song for the album and then released it as a single, where it became their first #1 hit in theUnited States.Do you own •(or have you ever seen) a decorative item called a dream catcher? Typi-cal examples are shaped like a small hoop and draped with loosely-woven web. Feathers, beads, or other ornaments may dangle from the bottom of the hoop. The dream catcher originated with the Ojibwa Nation. It was traditionally hung above the beds of young children to protect them from the bad spir-its that delivered nightmares.A “pipe dream” is a fantastic goal that is •nearly impossible to achieve. The “pipe” in this case refers to an opium pipe; the term was coined when opium dens were a popular form of relaxation. While under theinfluence, smokersexperiencedloftyand fanciful visions while disconnected from reality. When “Daydream Believer” was pre-•sented to Davy Jones of The Monkees to sing in the studio, he admittedly disliked the song. He felt it was in the wrong key for his voice, and he didn’t care for the lyrics. (He was born and raised in Eng-land, where there are no “homecoming queens.”) It wasn’t until the song went to #1onthepopmusicchart inDecember1967 that he grudgingly admitted, “May-be it’s not such a bad song after all.”Mary Shelley was an aspiring 18-year-•old writer when she had a bizarre dream about an inanimate, man-like creature that was stretched out on a table. When the powerful engine attached to him was fired up, the body showed signs of life. When she awoke the next morning, Shel-
ley began work converting the dream into a short story. But by the time she was done, the tale ended up as a full-length novel. Her 1818 book, Frankenstein (or The Modern Prometheus), inspired the “mad scientist” literary genre. One of the most famous guitar sequenc-•es in rock history is the riff that opens the Rolling Stones’ hit “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Those raucous notes came to Keith Richards in a dream he had in a hotel room one night in May 1965. Richards woke up, grabbed his guitar, switched on the portable tape recorder on his nightstand, and played the notes that were stuck in his head. He then fell back asleep. Richards later said that when he played back the tape, there was just one minute of music, while the rest of it was him snoring.Scientists describe a nightmare as a •dream that causes feelings of terror or extreme anxiety. Nightmares only occur during REM sleep, and are most likely to occur in the last few minutes of sleep. Illness, stress, and reactions to certain medications may cause nightmares to occur more frequently.Writersweretaskedwithfiguringouthow•to bring a character back to life when Pat-rick Duffy decided to return to TV’s Dal-las in 1986. They did so by revealing that the previous season had been a dream. The network wanted to keep it a secret, however, so they came up with an elabo-rate scheme. Afraid that someone on the Dallas set would blab, producers went to another set with a new camera crew andpretendedtofilmDuffydoinganIrishSpring commercial. The actor lathered up in the shower, turned to the camera, and said “Good morning, I’m Patrick Duffy.” As the Dallas season wrapped, editors dropped footage of a soapy Duffy saying “good morning” into the cliffhanger epi-sode.

PICK OF THE WEEK“Appaloosa” -- I’m not a huge fan of Westerns, but there are two -- John Wayne’s “The Shootist” and “Tombstone” with Val Kilmer -- that I absolutely love. So, it’s always a pleasant surprise when I come across a Western that really entertains me. “Appaloosa” is one of them.“Appaloosa” stars Ed Harris, who is also thedirectorof thefilm.Youcantell this isa labor of love for him; his passion for the genre and this story comes through in every frame. Also starring is Viggo Mortensen. The two men play Virgil Cole (Harris) and Everett Hitch (Mortensen), guns for hire in the Old West. They go from town to town, running out desperados and bringing peace to simple folk who just want to start a new life.Which brings them to the town of Appaloosa. The marshall (an old friend of Cole’s) and his deputies are murdered by a sinister rancher named Bragg. Cole and Hitch take on the rancher and his crew, but things get a little complicated when a widow (Renee Zellweger) moves to town and begins a love triangle with the two lawmen.“Appaloosa” is an entertaining, well-acted and -directed film. Fans of Westerns willdefinitely want to add this DVD to theirlibraries, and it is well worth a rental for folks like me who aren’t fans of the genre.
DOG OF THE WEEK“Swing Vote” -- Kevin Costner stars in this ridiculous election-year comedy about the presidential election hanging on the vote of one man. And I use the term “comedy” quite wrongly. What was intended to be a satire of the American political process and a sort of Frank Capra-esque love letter to America is instead an overacted, Pollyanna-ish glop of treacle with all the bite of an earthworm. “Swing Vote” is a waste of your time and my time, and every copy of this DVD should be used to construct a prison for Costner so he never makes another movie again.
NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART“Tokyo Gore Police” -- From the same demented crew that brought us “The Machine Gun Girl” comes “Tokyo Gore Police,” an over-the-top action-horror flick about agroup of engineers who can grow weapons out of any wound inflicted on a person. The results are perverse, grotesque and shocking. The Tokyo Police Department therefore trains a special squad to combat these hideous and sadistic criminals -- with gory and spectacular results. Fans of cult Japanesecinemawilldefinitelywant thisin their collection.

According to Sigmund Freud, thefour most common dreams areteeth falling out, falling from aheight, flying, and being caughtnaked or near-naked. As to what
each of these dream symbolsmeans, scientists admit that
explanations are strictlyguesswork. Some psychologists
believe the teeth dreamrepresents a concern for

Divine Performing Arts to Dazzle Denver Audience
For most Americans, the Chinese New Year is often overlooked or is noted in passing by glancing at the zodiac covered place mat at our favorite Chinese restaurant. This year, The Divine Performing Arts invites you to celebrate the Chinese New Year in style and spectacle! The Colorado Chinese Media Association is delighted to bring Divine Performing Arts, the world’s premier Chinese dance and music company to Denver on January 30th and 31st at the fabulous Temple Buell Theatre. Show times are Friday at 8:00 pm and Saturday at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm. This is one of the most spectacular shows you will ever see!Divine Performing Arts brings to life classical Chinese dance and music in a gloriously colorful and exhilarating show. Its masterful choreography and graceful routines light up the stage, with gorgeously costumed dancers moving in stunning patterns. Based on ancient heroic legends and modern courageous tales, the charm of a Divine Performing Arts show is not to be missed. “We’re thrilled to be able to bring entertainment of this caliber to the community,” says Vivian Lam. “The show
promises to be as educational as it is entertaining and should appeal to the whole family as well as a wide range of people. You could travel all the way to China and never see this kind of quality.”An unprecedented collaboration of leading Chinese dancers, choreographers, and musicians, Divine Performing Arts seeks to breathe new life into traditional Chinese culture and provide an experience of sublime beauty. Based in New York, the company is a nonprofit entity thatis consciously independent of China’s political regime, under which the traditional arts have long suffered; included among Divine Performing Arts members are those who practice Falun Gong. Falun Gong is a peaceful, spiritual discipline founded in China in 1992. By 1998 it was estimated that there were 70 million practitioners in China and 100,000 million world-wide. In June 1999, the Communist Chinese government banned the practice of Falun Gong. The Divine Performing Arts company has broken ground by giving artistic treatment in its shows to not only classical themes and tales, but also important social issues in contemporary China.Last year Divine Performing Arts performed for some 600,000 live audience members as it toured 66 cities around the world. The
company has previously sold out Radio City Music Hall. Its shows have been called by critics “superb,” “resplendent,” “inspired,” and “wonderfully positive.” “The performances by Divine Performing Arts not only tell us a great deal about the values and ideals of China’s past,” says Vivian Lam, “but also about what is happening in China today. It truly is a world-class performance that is remarkably uplifting.”This year the Divine Performing Arts is touring 20 countries and will perform in over 80 cities worldwide. This is the second year that the Chinese New Year Spectacular will come to Denver. For more information about the Chinese New Year Spectacular go on-line to www.DenverSpectacular.com. By Samantha WeaverIt was Canadian-born author and educa-•tor Laurence J. Peter who made the fol-lowing sage observation: “The man who says he is willing to meet you halfway is usually a poor judge of distance.”Successful inventor and businessman •Thomas Alva Edison received only three months of formal education, at a public school in Michigan. Those who study such things claim that •the human skull can be compressed by 10 percent before the bone cracks. It begs the question, though: How did they testthehypothesis?Only male mockingbirds sing; the females •of the species are silent. In 1740, a judge in an ecclesiastical court •in France tried a cow -- yes, an actual bo-vine -- for sorcery. The poor animal was found guilty and sentenced to hang from the neck until dead.If you’re like the average American, you •consumed more than 250 eggs last year. The first photograph of aUnitedStates•citizen was taken in 1839. The subject was Samuel F.B. Morse, a painter who also happened to be the inventor of a sin-gle-wire telegraph system and developer of the Morse Code. You’ve probably never heard the term •“univocalic”; it’s one of those specialized words used by those who study the Eng-lish language. The word refers to a piece of writing that uses only one of the vow-els. “Strenghthlessness,” for example, is the longest one-word univocalic in Eng-lish.Experts say that in the United States, ap-•proximately 3.5 billion tons of soil are lost everyyeartoerosion. That’senoughtofilla freight train so long that it would circle the globe 19 times at the Equator.

HAHAHAHAHA. HUH?The problem with topical references in a TV sitcom is that by the time the series goes into syndication, many people won’t remember the name or event being discussed. Here are several examples we found just from watching a few TV comedy reruns from the 1980s-90s:
“Excuse me, •Krystle Carrington.” This remark was directed at those who were “putting on airs” or acting as if they were “above” everyone else. Krystle Carrington was the oh-so-elegant and wealthy character played by Linda Evans on the 1980s prime time soap Dynasty.“You got Madge and Martha Raye mixed •upagain, didn’tyou?”Whenacharacterdiscovered her elderly mother’s dentures in the dishwasher, she spat out this quick quip that referred to two commercial spokeswomen. Madge promoted Palmolive dish detergent (“You’re soaking in it!”), while Martha Raye hawked Polident denture cleaner.“How gullible do you think I am? Do•I look like Donna Rice?” Gary Hartwas a frontrunner for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1987 when reports of marital infidelities surfaced.Hart denied the rumors and invited reporters to “follow him around.” Two Miami Herald reporters did just that, and captured Hart aboard a yacht with 29-year-old Donna Rice (clad only in a T-shirt) on his lap. Rice later told the press that she was unaware that Hart was married, or that he was running for president.“FiguredoutwhichonewasShinola?”In•the early 1900s, Shinola was a popular brand of wax shoe polish. Because of the alliteration of the name and the appearance of the product, a common phrase used at the time to emphasize someone’s ignorance was: “He doesn’t know [censored] from Shinola.”“I am the battered consumer. I drive a •Gremlin, for god’s sake!” The Gremlin was a sub-compact car manufactured by the American Motors Corporation during the 1970s. It was the subject of much derision over the years and placed
number four in Car Talk’s “Worst Car of the Millennium” poll.“Sort of like a deer caught in the •headlights. I only thought pregnant sixteen year-old girls had that look until I saw Dan Quayle on TV.” During the 1988 Vice Presidential debate, Dan Quayle defended his youth by stating that he had as much experience as JFK had during his presidential run. Opponent Lloyd Bentsen drew shouts and applause from the audience when he responded, “I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy.” An obviously wounded Quayle had to pause before replying, “That was really uncalled for, senator.”“Right now, Squeaky Fromme has •a better grasp on reality.” Lynette ‘Squeaky’ Fromme was a member of the notorious Manson Family and was one ofCharlie’sclosestconfidantes.In1975,she made history by pointing a gun at then-President Gerald Ford as he glad-handed a crowd. Her pistol didn’t fire, butshewillalwaysbeknownasthefirstfemale held for attempted assassination of a U.S. president.“You thought Giorgio Armani was a •puppet on The Ed Sullivan Show!” Giorgio Armani is, of course, a noted fashion designer, but his name is somewhat similar to Topo Gigio, an adorable mouse puppet that appeared on The Ed Sullivan Show. This variety show ran from 1948 until 1971. For many years, it was the television venue for entertainers that were “hot,” or at least on the verge of becoming hot.
