I was struggling for inspiration of what to write this month, in this little introduction to the magazine, so I invited suggestions via Facebook! I was inundated with responses some sensible, some not!

Ideas for themes included Valentines Day, snowdrops and spring flowers, leap year and the breaking of Resolutions. Someone even sent me a little ditty that I thought I would share with you.

C harity Donation from local Business For the second year running Enterprise Chartered Certified Accounts of Tickhill, have not sent Christmas cards to their clients, instead they have chosen to donate the money to a very worthwhile Doncaster Charity

Platform 51, Doncaster Women’s Centre is a vibrant, multi-cultural community resource centre in the heart of Doncaster and offers a huge range of services for girls and women under one roof and through outreach into the Borough of Doncaster. The money donated from Enterprise this year paid for the Children’s Christmas Party.

Carmelle Harold, the Programme Services Manager commented ‘It was a really good party and every one who came said how great it was. The children loved Santa which one of our Volunteers did for us and she loved it even though she was really nervous and she was so pleased we asked her’

Keep your pet healthy and happy this winter

After the 'Light Spectacular' in December, a number of people said they would like to see the images of the

stained glass in St Mary's in more detail. You can enjoy seeing these at leisure on Thursday. March 1 in the Parish Room, starting at 7.30 pm. W OMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER ‘Let Justice Prevail’ On Friday 2nd March over 3 million people worldwide will be praying

and worshipping together during an annual day of prayer. The service has been prepared by the women of Malaysia, a country where women still face discrimination and violence. A New Vicar for Tickhill By now many will have heard that we have a new vicar coming to our Joint Benefice of St. Mary’s Tickhill with St.

M others' Union This month's meeting turned into a thoroughly enjoyable meander through members' remembrances

of Church involvement in the past and hopes and expectations for the future. Our Lenten project this year will be to fill jam jars with small change to support funding for for AFIA - Away from it All. This is a MU charity organised by Sheffield Diocese, which provides funding for extremely needy families to have a holiday. One of the Diocese's septuagenarian members recently raised money for the cause by a parachute jump! Next month on Tuesday we are looking forward to to Chris Cooke sharing her experiences with us of her work in Africa.

`Golden Oldies’ Tea Party Our `Golden Oldies’ tea party just before Christmas was, once again, a massive success. Students had raised monies prior to the party and presented each guest with a goody bag containing a Poinsettia & chocolates. These were very gratefully – and tearfully! received by our guests. Students also gave a special performance of the all singing and dancing Bugsy Malone.

The Easter tea party is on 29 March when we are looking forward to celebrating the 100th birthday of one of our partygoers.

Watch out Parliament – here comes the School Council!! On Friday 24 February the School Council are off to London on an exciting visit to the House of Commons. Students will learn how Parliament works, tour the amazing building and take part in an interactive workshop on “Your Voice” which will explore what students can do to make a difference on the issues that matter to them. Sounds fantastic!

Congratulations to two of our students who have been chosen to take part in the prestigious RIBI Young Musician Competition on 18 February. We’ll let you know next month how they got on.

What do the children at

Tickhill St Mary’s do all day?

When your child starts school all parents have to get used to their children having a life outside of home that they know very little about. When asked the question “What have you done at school today?” they will often answer “Uhm nothing..” That of course is not true, but it still leaves you as a parent wondering what they get up to.

Some things that the children learn at school are probably not what many parents would think of in the first instance. Speaking and listening to others, taking turns, playing fair, sharing and co-operating, following instructions, showing good manners and respecting themselves and others to name but a few. It will come as no surprise however, that children do reading, writing, maths, science, art, music, history, geography, religious education and PHSE.

None of these would be possible to learn without mastering the first skill: reading. Reading is tremendously important in our lives. Not only does it allow children to access other topics of learning, but it is also vital for driving a car, following a map, cooking from a recipe, installing a new piece of equipment, reading the instructions for a new game, using a computer, drawing money out of a cash machine, paying bills and the list goes on and on (I will try not to..).

Apart from all these things reading can also give enormous pleasure! To lose yourself in a good book is fantastic! Whether it is on a rainy Sunday afternoon or whilst waiting for a plane or just reading in bed before going to sleep nothing can replace it.

We try to teach the children the value and joy of books from an early age and that means not just decoding the words on the page. They do pictures from books they have read to them. (One of my favourites is when reception paint ‘Owl Babies’!) They play dress up as different characters from the books and build models of items from the story, like dream catchers from the BFG. So the next time they tell you that they have done ‘nothing’ at school, perhaps you might ask them what book they are reading at the moment.

E nergy

‘I sell here what all the world desires to have – power!’ Matthew Boulton, famous Bir-mingham entrepreneur in the Industrial Revolution, reputedly made this remark to James Boswell when the latter visited the Soho Foundry to see the manufacture of steam en-

gines. Energy is still a hot topic today. We all use it, gas, electricity, oil, petrol, and we all com-plain about constantly rising prices. According to the latest statistics the average household spends 7.5% of its income on energy, excluding transport. Government has a measure which it calls ‘fuel poverty’, where that figure rises to 10% or more. This measure is rapidly becoming unrealistic as at least 20% of us spend that percentage already. So energy, how we obtain it and how we use it, is a big issue for nation and individuals.

We can do something about it. It doesn’t need me to spell out the ways we can increase energy saving and energy efficiency in our homes. I find it difficult to believe the official claim that only 1% of UK homes meet a decent level of energy efficiency. Getting the loft fully insulated and making sure that our double glazing is effective has made a huge difference to our comfort and bills. There are still plenty of schemes, like the Government’s Green Deal to help householders. Many solar panels have appeared in Tickhill recently, no doubt to beat the reduction in subsidy level, but they remain another way to prepare for the future. And, of course, one can always switch things off rather than leave them on standby.

What isn’t likely is that those bills will go down. A quarter of the UK’s electricity generating capacity is due to shut down over the next ten years as old coal and nuclear power stations close and it will be costly to build the equivalent of 20 new large power stations. Demand for energy is increasing here but even more in the developing countries across the globe and we have to import so much of our energy. North Sea oil and gas supplies are dwindling. The UK is legally committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050, a tall order. Dependence on imports, often from volatile parts of the world, isn’t a happy situation.

We’ve got a lot of people to thank this month. Firstly we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who

supported our grand Christmas draw which was held on the 13th of December. To the companies who provided prizes, to the many people who donated items for the draw, to the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell tickets, and of course to all of you who purchased the tickets – thank you! If you were one of the many lucky winners then we’ve probably already been in touch, but you should find a list of winners wherever tickets were on sale.

During December we helped Santa visit over a thousand homes within the Tickhill & District area and gave out hundreds of Christmas cards. Thank you to all who greeted us so warmly and made such kind donations.

Santa’s reindeer won’t have gone hungry on Christmas Eve as children of all ages sprinkled magic reindeer food to guide Rudolph and his friends to their home. So thank you to all of you who supported us by purchasing Reindeer food, and again a big thank you to all of the local businesses and individuals who helped us sell the food.

And of course a big thank you to the many, many more people who have supported us at our fundraising events throughout 2011. At Tickhill & District Lions we pay all of our own expenses and administration costs, so you can be sure that every penny you’ve given will be carefully spent helping deserving causes over the coming year.

Tickhill Estfeld - Indoor Athletics

As we all returned to school or work in January I am sure

that many of us felt that a good New Years Resolution was to get a little more exercise. The pupils at Estfeld didn’t waste much time getting back to their fitness routine.

Since the start of term all of our pupils in Key Stage 2 have been taking part in indoor athletics in their games lessons, whilst Year 6 have been busy preparing for the Sir Thomas Wharton Indoor Athletics Competition which took place on 17th January 2012.

Twenty of our Year 6 pupils represented the school. They competed in track and field events which consisted of chest throw, speed bounce, vertical jump, standing long jump, soft javelin, individual sprints, hurdles and relays. Each individual event score counted towards the school’s final result so everybody’s contribution was vital.

A great atmosphere was generated throughout the event, with students cheering on their peers and parents and staff encouraging their children. The pupils demonstrated fair play and respect for each other throughout the fantastic afternoon. The afternoon finished with the relay events, allowing competitors from each school to be fully supported by their peers. Well done to everybody who represented Estfeld. The school is very proud of your contribution and your behaviour and attitude on the day.

Special thanks also to the staff and pupils of Sir Thomas Wharton Community College who organised the event.

After a close competition, Edlington Hill Top School were declared winners and will progress to the next round of the competition, the Doncaster Finals at Adwick Leisure Centre later this term. Estfeld finished in a very creditable third place.

Our pupils will be competing again later in the term at the pyramid Swimming Gala and the Doncaster Schools Cross Country Competition.

M ayflower Animal Sanctuary, Narrow lane, Bawtry Nr Doncaster The weather has been kind to us so far but I dare say there is still time for the snow to arrive. As usual we have had a very busy Christmas. Dogs and cats still need feed-ing and cleaning whether it is a holiday period or not. So thank you to all the volun-

teers and workers that helped over this period.

We had 2 street collections on the run up to Christmas in Doncaster both on Sundays which is new to us, but again the people of Doncaster came up trumps with their generosity. We also took part in a Bag Pack in Marks and Spencer on 24th Dec, everyone was in the festive mood and again the very generous people of Doncaster gave around the £500 mark. So thank you Doncaster and Marks and Spencer.

The kitten season will be upon us very shortly and we have the most cats and kittens in our Sanctuary to date. We have nearly 60 cats and kittens that require homes. There are some really beautiful kittens, so if you are looking for a cat or kitten to share your life please come and see us. (there are lots of elderly lap cats too ) It would also maybe be beneficial to get your cats neutered before the spring. Some vets have deals on neutering so it may be a good idea to check out some local vets

I now have a sad story with a happy ending Mary the x spaniel came to Mayflower just before Christmas, after wondering the streets for several days before being taken in by the dog warden. We have been established for 10 years and unfortunately have witnessed many cruelty cases but this is by far one of the most intention-al act of cruelty we have ever seen. In our Vets opinion Mary has extensive wounds consistent with hot or chemical liquid being poured over her.

When she came to us totally traumatised her wounds were raw and bleeding and she had totally given up on life, not acknowledging anyone or showing any interest in food. With such horren-dous injuries the terrifying ordeal must have been unimaginable for her .. After 10 days of extensive treatment and lots of TLC her future is starting to look a little brighter, hopefully she will be having an operation to remove her damaged skin this week. After all the human abuse that she has suffered it's amazing that in such a short space of time she has responded so well and is learning to trust again. She is always pleased to see you and greets you with a waggy tail every time. It seems Mary doesn't hold a grudge with the human race and will hopefully be waiting to find her forever, loving home in the New Year. As a Sanctuary we are faced with situations like this far more than we should be. We ask our-selves why are people willing to inflict such injuries on any animal, we unfortunately have no answers…

Wadworth’s Pupils Had An Interesting Christmas !

Wadworth Primary School welcomes back the pupils from 2011 into 2012. Here are some of the interesting activities that the children have done over the Christmas holidays.

Angel from Year 5 was a dancer in the Doncaster Civic Theatre Pantomime Sleeping Beauty. The production was on the 8th of December till the 31st of December 2011. Angel was a juvenile dancer for the production.

Harriet from Year 6 and Alison Year 5 did a dancing show to 487 people at Parklands 23rd December 2011. The money raised went towards buying some more equipment for the Allegro Theatre Dance Academy in Balby.

Joe and Ethan Year 5 were both mascots for Doncaster Knights Rugby Club. They got to meet all of the players and the captain Glen Wilson. This was on 7th of January 2012 .

Eden in Year 6, Lilly Year 3 and Ebony Year 2, performed in front of 300 people at Goldthorpe theatre on the 17th – 18th of December 2011. The money they raised went to their trip to Disney Land.

Also Aisha went to Flamingo land, Alton Towers and Light water Valley. Zainab saw her new born nephew for the first time. Hannah went to Australia and went looking for Kangaroos. Last but not least Georgina was in a cheerleading competition and came joint third, the money went to her cheerleading group to get more sessions .

E FFECTITIS. Along with half the population I take pills for my health. As a conscientious patient I read the leaflets that come with the tablets. They tell me what the pills contain, what they are for, how and when to take them and what to do if I take too many. They also mention

possible side effects. For my four drugs there are 130 listed. Common effects listed are: rashes, swelling of lips, constipation, diarrhoea, tiredness, breathlessness, flatulence, indigestion, sleep loss, bruising, weakness, wheezing, dizziness, headache, tingling, sexual difficulties, appetite loss, muscle pain, itching, flushing and impotence.

Many of these are common to all four leaflets. There are also others peculiar to only one of the tablets which called are ‘Rare’. They include sore throat, nose bleeds, gout, lung infections, pal-pitations, tinnitus, mood changes, depression, fainting, weight change, hair loss, memory loss, heartburn, confusion and many more.

I read about all these with mounting alarm because clearly I suffer from most of them. It is a remarkable achievement of the pharmaceutical companies to develop a drug that can cause both diarrhoea and constipation, but they have succeeded in my case. Flatulence is my constant companion with indigestion no stranger. Sleep loss I have at night but strangely is no problem during the day.

Weakness emerges when I try to rise from my armchair and is always followed by muscle pain. Tingling and rashes happen all the time. Sexual difficulties are not a hazard these days possibly because of impotence. Flushing I reserve for the toilet. Tiredness I have in an acute form re-lieved by long bouts of armchair contemplation. Appetite loss at least means that food bills are reduced. Even some of the rare side effects have not passed me by. Anyone I meet in the street knows about the memory loss because their names have vanished. Mood changes are fairly common and confusion is becoming chronic. Hair loss is accelerating. Sometimes I wonder whether the odd noises coming from my hearing aids may be the onset of tinnitus. Luckily gout has stayed away but it is disappointing that my frozen shoulder and housemaid’s knee have been overlooked. Once when I told a doctor of the pain in my right knee he said it was just my age. Nonsense! the other knee is just as old and doesn’t hurt at all.

The galling thing is that at the periodical medical check the nurse insists that I am in remarkably good health and refuses to admit that I suffer from Effectitis. They could easily suggest some medication to combat some of the side effects. The trouble is that any such tablets would only bring another alarming leaflet loaded with more of them.

Northgate Pre-School

The children and staff of Northgate Pre-school would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all the parents, carers, family and friends who came to support their nativity on Saturday 10thDecember at St Mary’s Church.

Such support is vital to the existence of Northgate Pre-School, a charitable organisation. Funds raised through the sale of entry tickets and raffle tickets amounted to over £100, from which a donation of £76 was made to the church. The remaining funds will be used to provide valuable equipment for the children in pre-school.

A Great New Event for 2012

Runners from across the country and even beyond will be hitting the streets of Doncaster next May as the town will be hosting its first mass running event for many years. The Brooks Run Doncaster 10k takes place on Sunday 13 May and will see people taking part in a 10k which will start and finish at the famous Racecourse and taking in the Markets area, Town Centre and Town Fields.

The event promises to attract participants from across the UK and even runners from abroad. A Corporate Team Challenge will also feature in the event, with teams of 3 or more employees from the same firm competing to win the Corporate Shield.

Following the 10k event will be a Community Challenge Family Fun Run for children and fami-lies, with all finishers receiving a medal and certificate.

Julian Moorhouse of organisers, Metres to Miles said “We are delighted to be working with the council to bring this event to Doncaster. The response has been tremendous, we had hundreds of people register in the first 36 hours, with entrants coming from London, Cumbria and even one entrant from the Isle of Man. It really is a great year to get the event off the ground, 2012 is a tremendous year for sport in UK and this event is for everyone”.

Councillor Cynthia Ransome, Cabinet Member for Communities said: “The event promises something for all, from the Family Fun Run to the more competitive races - each taking in some of the wonderful open spaces that we have in Doncaster.“

The event has attracted sponsorship from global sports brand Brooks, and UK Marketing Manager Mike East was delighted to come on board as title sponsor for the event for the next two years “We have been looking for a big event to sponsor in the North of England and Run Doncaster fits the bill exactly. The run appeals to the new jogger as well as the seasoned athlete and it’s great that it is in a place as accessible as Doncaster”.

L ocal Bus Services Following operation on Friday 27th January, 2012, service 305 will be with-drawn. HOWEVER, a NEW service will

be introduced from Tuesday 31st January:

SERVICE 304 - Tickhill-Stainton-Maltby-Braithwell-Micklebring-Clifton-Conisbrough-Balby-Doncaster

This service will run on TUESDAY and FRI-DAYs only. This is a step in the right direc-tion, to give us some sort of link to Maltby. Options for this service include alighting at High Street, Maltby, and getting onward travel to Dinnington or Rotherham. You would get approx 2 hours at Dinnington, and 2/2.5 hours at Rotherham. On the return from Rotherham, it is possible to get the bus to Micklebring, Braithwell, or Stainton, have a couple of drinks at one of the local pubs (bus stops right outside), and return on ser-vice 304 to Tickhill. Don`t forget also, the new Wetherspoons pub will be opening in March, so you could use this bus for that also. I will be looking at all the possible connections and attractions available, and more information can be acquired from myself. EX ART STUDENT AND RESTAURANTEUR TO PROMOTE ARTISTS Art lover and restauranteur Gina Moore who runs the Garden Room Restaurant at Braithwell nr Rotherham was looking at ways to combine her love of art with her love of food and at the same time give emerging artists a leg up on the business ladder. Gina remem-bers how difficult as a young artist it was to get people to notice and buy her work which had led her to changing careers and going onto run a restaurant. On a chance meeting with one of her customers jewellery designer Chris Rose Linacre from Barnsley they hatched on the idea to offer one day art courses where the public get a chance to meet the artist, ,create something for themselves to take away and of course enjoy the delectable delights on offer at the Garden Room Restaurant.

Throughout January and February art will also be on the menu every Tuesday, starting with Chris offering jewellery classes on Tuesday 17th January where those attending can create a beautiful necklace or bracelet. Key to the classes is not just learning techniques but pushing creativity too. T ickhill and District Local History Society Our Christmas Social on 15th December was attended by over 50 members and guests and lived up to the high standards of the past few years. The Millstone put on an excellent hot buffet and this was followed by a light hearted talk entitled “Who Do You Think They Are” by Frank Morley. Altogether it was an excellent start to the Christmas

festivities and we thank Dorothy Bradley, our hardworking Secretary who organised the event. Changing the subject, have you ever googled “Tickhill Butchers”? Possibly not, but if you do, on the first page of about 30 references is one to an article about “Shops and Shopkeepers” on the Society’s website. Not much use if you want to buy meat but it does show how far and wide the Society’s (and Tickhill’s) name is spread across the internet. During 2011 the site had over 1500 visitors / month with over 3000 pages being viewed every day from many parts of the world. Local History is obviously popular but this level of website activity says much for the quality of the site and its ease of use. Steve Payne has been responsible for the website since its inception and we thank him very much for his valuable work. The website address is www.tickhillhistorysociety.org.uk

Our archivists have been busy perhaps inspired by mutterings about a Local History Fair in Tick-hill next summer (more news later). A local resident has recently loaned us for copying some priceless documents from which a lot can be learned about the social history of our town over several centuries. If you have any old documents gathering dust and would be prepared to loan or give them to us please contact either Lesley Nicholson in the Library or Sally Tyas (742847) or John Millington (744945). Thank you.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday 16th February when Gordon Taylor, until recently Vicar of Tickhill will give a talk entitled “Not of this Parish”. It is likely to be an interesting and amusing evening. The meeting will be in the Methodist Schoolroom, Northgate, starting at 7.30PM. Visitors will be most welcome.

T ickhill Scouts I would just like to start off with a request to the gentleman, we have your name, who purchased a television from a local large supermarket and gave his home address as the Scout HQ. If he would like to deliver the actual TV to us we would be most grateful

otherwise, would he care to buy himself a Television Licence. We are being harassed by the TV Licensing Authority about our lack of a TV Licence and it has threatened to visit the building with an enforcement team. We do not have a TV nor do we intend possessing one in the near future.

During a recent meeting that I was not present at someone asked the question – what has Tickhill Scouts done for the village? An excellent question which just goes to show that we do not shout loud enough about what we do for others. Apart from providing a safe, welcoming building for youngsters aged between 5 and 25 and adults of any age supervised by trained committed adult leadership, what have we done?

Last year we raised over £1000 for Safe@Last – a homeless teenagers charity. We raised £75 for Children in Need. We planted a large number of daffodils in the verges near the Travellers rest and Castle Close. We supported Guide Dogs for the Blind. Via the Global Challenge the scouts raised funds for SOS Leatherback Turtles and Tigers. We assisted the Lions with their Father Christmas collections in Tickhill and Bawtry. We have held Jumble sales where admittedly we have made some money out the items provided by the generous Tickhill folks but, in addition, we have then recycled the leftovers to Charity shops and, if that fails, we recycle everything else responsibly. We also organise the annual Tickhill Gala with little to no financial support. Not too bad for a small organisation of about 100 youngsters and 15 plus adults.

It is a pity that it becomes necessary to write such things but sometimes it is necessary to defend our corner. We are very thankful that the majority of Tickhill people support us and realise that we are useful part of the community.

On Thursday 12th January a much loved supporter of Tickhill Scouts sadly died. Jill Gunn was a remarkable character who became involved with us over 20 years ago. She has worked with Cubs and Scouts as a helper particularly in the craft areas. She was also a camper of some skill. Cooking was her forte and she was just at home cooking over an open fire as she was using gas. Jill was never phased by the large number of scouts, cubs etc who always seemed to suddenly need feeding a full breakfast or a dinner. Between us we devised methods of bulk cooking which were totally unconventional but worked. The cook tent was a source of much hilarity when things went awry but nevertheless wholesome nourishing food was produced under the most testing of conditions. Over the latter years Jill’s contribution has been her annual Christmas Wall Hanging and some exquisitely worked Christmas decorations and cards. Although, during 2011 she also produced about 30 pot bags for the cubs to keep their cutlery and crockery in at camp and had just asked me to find the rest of the material so she could make some more. She was not averse to scolding me in the street if I had not done something she wanted me to do and she called a spade a spade. Jill will be sorely missed by all of us in the Scouts and Guides but she leaves many fond memories behind.

Tickhill Town Council

During the last few months as Clerk to the Council I have been asked many far reaching questions, mainly relating to crime, dog fouling, parking and public toilets.

If you see any crime being committed, no matter how small, please report it. If the police are not informed, they cannot act upon it. It is also possible to attend the P.A.C.T. (Partners and Communities Together) meetings held monthly at either Bawtry or Tickhill. This is an informal opportunity to raise issues with the Police.

The next one is on the 9th February Tithes Lane Tickhill. Start time 1800hrs. A useful contact is Tickhill Bawtry SNT (Safer Neighbourhood Team) on Facebook for all of those who have an internet link. The SNT telephone line is 01302 385338 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. Other useful numbers for contacting the Police can be found at the back of this publication.

Dog Fouling is another issue. If you are a dog owner or walker, please ensure you are responsible. If your dog fouls anywhere please pick it up, take it home if there is not a bin available and put it in your own bin. After completing training, we now have in Tickhill a D.M.B.C. authorised Officer, Cllr Cannings, who can now report incidents of Enviro-Crime. This covers, Litter, Car Litter, Dog Fouling, Graffiti, Fly Posting and Fly Tipping. These are not third party reports but must be witnessed by Cllr Cannings.

Parking is another issue. Please refrain from parking on foot paths and grass verges. If you have a drive please use it. Prams, push chairs and pedestrians have the right to use the foot path, not cars. Try getting together with neighbours and park on one side of the road if it is narrow. You may be surprised how convivial it could be.

The last issue is the public loos. I have been asked many times about the re opening of the loos, and I have been told Bawtry have such a luxury. I have investigated this and ‘Yes’ they do, but it is financed from fees obtained from parking in their town. They also have a small road sweeper that has a snow plough attachment. All financed from their Parking Fees. Before my time the issue of charging for parking in Tickhill was approached but it was not acceptable for the shop keepers or the residents. The only other way we could finance this is to increase the Precept, which will in turn put up the Council Tax. That would probably be an even greater issue. It is worth pointing out our only revenue is obtained from the pavilion and domestic council tax, and nothing from business rates.
