Location
The biome taiga is found in the latitude lines of 60° to 75° latitude which is most of Canada and the northern part of Europe and Asia. The taiga is also called the coniferous forest or boreal forest.
Climate
The taiga 6 months out of the year is below freezing with the lowest temperature being -65°. In the summer in this biome is warm humid and rainy.
Nutrient Flow Cycle
Biodiversity
Some animals that live in the taiga are wolverines, bobcats, lynx, snowshoe rabbits, elk, moose.
Niches
Lynx- Eats small to medium animals and ground dwelling birds.
Snowshoe Rabbit- Eats plants, prey for bobcats and lynx and other predators
Elk- Eats plants, prey for bobcats and lynx and other predators
Moose- Eats aquatic and terrestrial plants
Plants
There are 3 types of trees that live in this biome: fir, spruce, and pine. One there types of trees live here because each tree releases a toxin that poisons the soil so different types of trees can not grow here.
Food Chain & Web
GPP & NPP
The gross primary productivity and the net primary productivity in this biome is low because it is so cold for most of the year.
Succession
The main way in which succession occurs this biome is through forest fires which is a secondary type of succession and it happens in order to get rid of areas with old and sick trees. There are actually some trees in the Taiga biome that will only release seeds when there is a forest fire called the Jack Pine
Human Impact
MDC- Russia and Canada Cutting down trees for lumber and mining endanger the environment
LDC- A small Portion of Mongolia, which is located between China and Russia, contains a taiga forest. The taiga forest is located on the northern side of Mongolia and you can find moss and lichen in many of the trees. They also cut down trees.
