ERIC ALEXANDER, a local Riverdale resident and one of the premiere saxophonists of his generation, will be heading up an incredible line up of musicians for the gala including jazz legend Harold Mabern. Eric has been a tremendous supporter of KRVC, performing at our community jazz concerts and our outdoor festivals. We are thrilled to have him back at the Greenway Gala.

Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander has been exploring new musical worlds from the outset. He started out on piano as a six-year-old, took up clarinet at nine, switched to alto sax when he was 12, and converted to tenor when jazz became his obsession during his studies at the University of Indiana, Bloomington (1986-87). Eric then went on to William Paterson College in New Jersey. He advanced his studies there under the tutelage of Harold Mabern, Joe Lovano, Rufus Reid, and others.

“The people I listened to in college are still the cats who are influencing me today,” Eric says. “The legacy left by Bird and all the bebop pioneers, that language and that feel—that’s the bread and butter of everything I do.” George Coleman is a big influence because of his very hip harmonic approach. And I’m still listening all the time to Coltrane because I feel that—even in the wildest moments of his mid- to late-60s solos—I can find these little kernels of melodic information and employ them in my own playing.”

During the 1990s, after placing second behind Joshua Redman in the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition, Alexander threw himself into the whirlwind life of a professional jazz musician. He made his recording debut in 1991 with Charles Earland, and cut his first album as leader in 1992. Eric has appeared in many capacities on record, including leader, sideman, producer as well as composing a number of the tunes he records. His latest albums “Touching,” “Chicago Fire” and “The Real Thing” have all received critical acclaim. Eric continues to tour the world over to capacity audiences. He can regularly be seen in NYC jazz clubs.

HAROLD MABERN (born March 20, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee) is a hard bop and soul jazz pianist. Mabern was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee – a city that’s a capital of 20th century American music. Like fellow Memphis jazz artists George Coleman, Booker Little, and Frank Strozier, Mabern attended Manassas High School, and after an early attempt at playing the drums, he taught himself piano and fell under the spell of pianist Phineas Newborn Jr., an influence that would shape and linger with Mabern for the rest of his life.

Along with some other Memphis musicians, Mabern moved to Chicago in 1954 where he soon found work backing up tenor sax players Johnny Griffin, Gene Ammons and Clifford Jordon. He also gained further influence from studying with pianist Ahmad Jamal and played in the hardbop group MJT + 3, before going on to New York City in 1959.

One of his earliest significant gigs was an 18-month stay with Art Farmer and Benny Golson’s Jazztet. After the Jazztet disbanded, Mabern worked with Jimmy Forrest, Lionel Hampton, Donald Byrd and did a brief stint with Miles Davis in 1963. He worked with J.J. Johnson (1963-65), Lee Morgan(1965) and Hank Mobley — recording the album, “Dippin’ ” — Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard and Joe Williams (1966-67), and Mabern also played in a quartet with guitarist Wes Montgomery.

Decades later Mabern praised the joyous quality of Montgomery’s playing and personality and told an interviewer: “The music was challenging. He’d just start playing. He’d say ‘Mabern, play this with me.’ Now, if he had a specific thing he wanted me to play, like say maybe he wanted me to play a figure with him in unison, ok, and I’d pick it right up because of the fact that I’m self taught, always had to use my ears anyway… Then there’d be times when he’d say, ‘Mabern, you play this with me,’ and it might be the harmony part to what he’s playing…whatever way, it was always a challenge. He always said, ‘Mabern, you’re a bad cat.’ And I’d say, ‘Oh, I’m just trying to keep up with you.’ ”

Between 1968-70, Mabern led four albums for Prestige, the first being A Few Miles From Memphis with a lineup that featured two saxophonists, one of them fellow Memphis native George Coleman. As the 1970s began, Harold Mabern became a key member of Lee Morgan’s working group and appeared on several live and studio recordings in 1972.

In more recent years, he has toured and recorded extensively with his former William Paterson University student, the tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander. To date, Mabern and Alexander have appeared on over twenty CDs together. A longtime faculty member at William Paterson University since 1981, Mabern is also a frequent instructor at the Stanford Jazz Workshop.

RiverFest Success! It was a hot one! But RiverFest 2017 was a “way

cool” success. Coming off a soggy RiverFest 2016, the sun, at any intensity, was more than welcome. And if you were down by the water

listening to the sounds of Steve Oates, F/E/A/T/H/E/R, Mark the Harper, Ina May Wool and Randy Niles, you were enjoying Riverdale’s once-per-year version of paradise.

The tall ships were sailing, the food was cooking, the kids were bouncing (in and out of the bounce house) and the vision of an all waterfront Greenway along the Hudson River was alive for everyone in attendance at the College of Mount Saint Vincent on June 11th.

If you were on the main lawn you got to enjoy local talents like Seeing Voices, If But When, and Spuyten Duyvil. Headliner Tom Chapin entranced the audience with his performance of his brother Harry’s timeless classic Cat’s in the Cradle.

All the while, the NYC DOT (compliments of Councilman Andrew Cohen) was distributing free bike helmets, the Animal Care Center of New York was finding new homes for their furry charges, the Arm of the Sea Theatre was entertaining the crowd with their imaginative performance of the Rejuvenary River Circus, and RiverFest Talks, a first-ever environmental lecture series, was so successful that KRVC intends to continue and promote it throughout the year.

Kingsbridge Riverdale Van Cortlandt Development Corp’s (KRVC) Greenway Director and Lead Festival Organizer, Cliff Stanton opined, “we may still be several years away from breaking ground, but RiverFest reminds us how much the residents of the Bronx and visitors to our borough stand to gain from the Greenway. Good things come to those who wait.” Stanton went on to explain that expectations in the community, as expressed clearly by Festival-goers, were rising in advance of a long-anticipated Greenway feasibility study by the MTA. The study, expected to be completed by the end of the year, was generously funded by longtime RiverFest supporter, State Senator Jeff Klein.

KRVC’s Executive Director Tracy McCabe Shelton looked appreciatively at the crowd assembled for the pre-RiverFest movie night (the Disney classic Up) and shared her thoughts aloud, “they feel an undeniable connection to their River. They deserve the same access to their waterfront that so many other communities throughout the city and country enjoy. So help me, we will do all we can to help them get it.”

GREENWAY GALA

It was a perfect summer night July 26, 2017 to enjoy a movie on the lawn of the Van Cortlandt House Museum. Thank you

to the Museum for providing this spectacular space. Before the movie started everyone enjoyed mini golf, face painting, art projects and lawn art, and beautiful music from acoustic guitarist Steve Oates. Thank you so much to our sponsors Bright Horizons and Riverdale Family Orthodontics for bringing out their materials and give-aways to share.

Before the feature Mark Cabaroy (pictured at right), a Bronx filmmaker, shared with us his short film “The Invaders” from his web series. It takes us on a journey with young Angie as she tries to figure out what to do about space invaders who have come to earth. “The Invaders Web Series Angie’s Logs” can be seen on youtube. Then Broadway Producer Larry Ragowsky (pictured bottom right with Laura Carpenter Myers, Director of the Museum) led us in a sing-a-long to “The Sound of Music.”

through education.” She attended the event and participated in the ribbon cutting and did an art project with the kids. All the kids also enjoyed mini golf, spray chalk and face painting on the lawn outside the museum. Thanks so much to Laura Carpenter Myers, Director of the Van Cortlandt House Museum for helping us host this lovely event.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME The Kingsbridge Art and Music FestivalOn August 1, 2017, we were

honored to work with the 50th Precinct to help produce their National

Night Out Against Crime street festival. It was a beautiful day on 234th Street in the Bronx. Hundreds of people came out and enjoyed the food, music, art and activities. Thank you to Dragonfly 13 and Steve Oates who performed live on our stage. We loved having four fine artists participate in the festival including painter Rio Davies, mixed/media artist Valerie Deas, sculptor Deborah Schreier Grinberg and photographer Kristina Thorstenson. Thank you to the elected officials who attended. And thank you to the members of the 50th Precinct who help to make our neighborhood such a beautiful place to live. It is part of our mission to create opportunities for our community members to connect with their friends and neighbors and feel a sense of pride and belonging.

Truckin’ with KRVC in Marble Hill

It was our pleasure to hold this great event with the Merchants of Marble Hill on Wednesday, June 28th. The special day featured the KRVC

Truck which was first introduced to the community in April at our premiere event on the rooftop of Buffalo Wild Wings located on Broadway. The fun event had continuous live music, free face painting with a never-ending line of eager kids and a special arts and crafts project with items for boys and girls to create. There was an endless stream of yummy cotton candy for all ages that was provided by Orlando Kross of Flowers By Zenda who played a big role in making this day a big success for all. The event was followed by a dinner meeting and discussion focusing on issues regarding the Marble Hill community at Montezuma Restaurant on Kingsbridge Road. The evening was attended by key Marble Hill Merchants as well as representatives from Community Board 8, Senator Marisol Alcantara’s office, Assemblywoman Carmen De La Rosa’s office, Marble Hill Tenants Association and members of KRVC.

Movie and Music at the Museum

Music at the Museum

It was a gorgeous summer day and families came out from all over the Bronx to enjoy The Sing For Hope’s piano played by acclaimed

jazz pianist Sarah Jane Cion at the Van Cortlandt House Museum on Wednesday, June 14th.

The Sing for Hope Pianos places artist designed pianos throughout New York City’s parks and public spaces for anyone and everyone to play in the month of June. This year, Sing for Hope placed it’s 400th unique piano artwork in the five boroughs, making NYC home to more street pianos than any other city in the world. As NYC’s largest recurring public art project, the Sing for Hope Pianos impacts an estimated 2 million people each year. Find out more about the program at SingForHope.org.

From June 5th to 25th this one-of-a-kind piano was on the porch of the Van Cortlandt House Museum in the Bronx. The museum piano was painted by Alexander Tuchinsky who teaches Special Education to 1st and 2nd graders. Ms. Tuchinsky said, “My first graders invented a song about never giving up. I am an artist. How I have decided to practice being an artist is

KRVC Jobs Networking Event

Club KRVC with the Riverdale Music Studio

North Riverdale Block Festival 2017

The North Riverdale Avenue Block Festival on Sunday, May 7th was a wonderful success. The rain came

and went and the crowds stayed to enjoy the mini golf, bouncy house, live music all day from jazz trio 718 and rock band Rocky and the Pressers, a performance by the Riverdale Rising Stars, and a Masala Bhangra demonstration from Deb Kolb of the Riverdale Y. The restaurants on North Riverdale Avenue were out serving delicious food. We are so grateful to all our sponsors who helped make the event possible and came out to share their businesses. Thank you to State Senator Jeff Klein, State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and City Councilman Andrew Cohen for their support. Thank you to Stacey Natal for the beautiful photos.

PHOTOS: STACEY NATAL

On May 18th, Alma Micic and Rale Micic of the Riverdale Music Studio brought their wonderful

students to Club KRVC to perform. The students sang and played guitar to a wide range of pop, jazz, and show tunes. The Club was full with friends and family who came out to support the performers. There was a true sense of pride in our community, and tremendous support for these budding artists. Many thanks to Rale and Alma.

KRVC is hosting a Jobs Networking Event on Tuesday October 17, 2017, from 7-9pm. This free event for the community will take place at The Riverdale Y and serves to bring local businesses and nonprofits together with

area residents to highlight job opportunities and solicit resumes. Businesses and nonprofits will staff tables to inform the

public about current and future employment and volunteer positions. Additionally, KRVC will staff a table with information about effective resume writing and how to search most effectively for jobs in today’s market.

The Jobs Networking Event supports local businesses and nonprofits to recruit qualified candidates and gives local residents a forum to find out about full-time and part-time employment opportunities, speak directly with a business or nonprofit representative and present resumes.

KRVC’s first Jobs Networking Event in 2016 was a success, with more than 50 people attending in the hopes of finding full and part time employment in our area. These job seekers ranged greatly in age from early twenties to early seventies; people with High School Diplomas, Bachelor and Masters Degrees as well as PhDs. Some people were looking for first time jobs but many were skilled individuals with a wealth of experience, looking to return to the work force having taken time out to care for children and look after aging parents. Business and nonprofit representatives were able to talk with interested applicants and job seekers were given the opportunity

to present their resumes. These resumes are posted on KRVC’s Jobs Bulletin Board at http://www.krvcdc.org/resumes. Additionally, available employment positions in our community can be viewed at http://www.krvcdc.org/jobs.

This year, KRVC is delighted to partner with The Riverdale Y for its Jobs Networking Event on Tuesday, October 17 2017. The multi-purpose room at The Y affords a large space for all event participants and for light refreshments to be served. Additionally, KRVC is very pleased that the following businesses ave already confirmed their participation: Kingsbridge Heights Community Center; Montefiore; Wells Fargo; Studio 360, Architecture-Interior Design; Delaj Hair Salon.

To participate in the Jobs Networking Event as a business or nonprofit, or to request more information about attending the event, please contact KRVC’s Jobs Program Coordinator, Holly Makin, MSW at [email protected] or at (718) 543-7100.

In our KRVC office, located at 505 West 236th Street, KRVC hosts a workshop series. On October 3rd from 7-8:30 pm, we will hold a “Parent Math Night: Helping Your Kids with the New Math.” This workshop will be facilitated by Robin Schwartz of Math Confidence and will discuss how Math has changed since you went to school and how we can help our kids learn and enjoy Math. Tips for Math success will be shared including how to study for Math tests and how to develop Math confidence. Feel free to bring your child’s homework/workbooks/textbooks. Message from the Executive Director

Fall is always a busy time for KRVC. We are looking forward to producing a block festival, our gala and several other community events including a Halloween Party, Holiday

Celebrations, Club KRVC Cultural Events, our annual Jobs Networking event, workshops and more. This fall, we are also producing our first Art Show at the Amalgamated Houses. We are so excited about this new partnership and event as part of our Culture at KRVC program in Van Cortlandt Village.

I hope you enjoy this KRVC News issue which highlights some of our spring and summer events. We produced block festivals, RiverFest, Movies in the Park and a Truckin’ with KRVC event. Our work, beyond events, includes our Hudson River Greenway and Broadway in the Bronx Initiatives. We hope to have more news soon on the Hudson River Greenway when the MTA releases the report funded by State Senator Jeff Klein. We have also enjoyed working with Senator Klein and Councilmember Andrew Cohen’s office on our street beautification initiative for the Broadway Commercial Corridor. Many ideas have been generated for ways to improve and enhance Broadway in the Bronx.

KRVC Works is our jobs program, which continues to thrive with eleven consultants. Over the summer, under the program, KRVC had three fabulous college interns: Alexa Edwards, Sophia Pinney and Jordan Stanton.

In the fall, KRVC is saying goodbye to Farrah Rubin. Farrah will move on to work for Senator Klein. She will be missed at KRVC! Our new Development Team will include Shari Hall, Linda Manning and Nancy Moukas. We look forward to a productive fall and to continue to work with everyone in the community on a range of issues and initiatives.

Thank you!—Tracy McCabe Shelton
