On This Date1715 – The first lighthouse in America was authorized for construction at the entrance to Boston Harbor. The original lighthouse is the last remaining manned station in the United States.

1840 – The British Parliament passed the Union Act, which united Upper and Lower Canada.

1872 – Elijah McCoy invented an automatic lubricator for oiling steam engines in locomotives and ships. McCoy become one of the most accomplished African American inventors in history.

Norse warriors who, during battle, wore coats made from the pelts

of bears. They fought in a nearly uncontrollable, trance-like fury, a characteristic that later gave rise
