SRINAGAR: At a time whendoctors in Jammu andKashmir have been asked towrite generic drugs, DoctorsAssociation Kashmir (DAK)on Wednesday said that thesedrugs would help to reducedeaths among cancer patients.

Welcoming the move,President DAK Dr Nisar ulHassan said research hasshown that inexpensive genericdrugs significantly decreasemortality among cancerpatients.

Two studies published in theLancet medical Journal found

that the use of two inexpensivegeneric drugs - aromataseinhibitors and Bisphosphon-ates-significantly improvedsurvival rates in post-menopausal women withbreast cancer, he said addingthat generic drugs make treat-ment affordable for cancerpatients and, as a result, savelives.

"Majority of cancer patientsdie for want of treatmentbecause they cannot affordcostly branded drugs," he said

adding that use of genericdrugs in other chronic medicalconditions, like diabetes, hyper-tension and other cardiovascu-lar ailments would result inlong term adherence to essen-tial therapies.

While generic drugs accountfor 88 per cent of prescriptionsin United States, in JK, hesaid, doctors prescribe moreexpensive brand-name drugswhen equally effective andcheaper generic versions areavailable.
