The Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Eastern Michigan Eagles and Western Michigan Broncos are preparing for games this month. First up is EMU as they travel to Montgomery, Alabama this Saturday (5:30 p.m. on ESPN) to play Georgia Southern in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl. It’s the second bowl appearance in three seasons for the Ypsilanti crew. Watch for Southern’s fine quarterback Shai Werts and his option offense. Western Michigan plays on Friday, December 21 (4 p.m. on ESPN) in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at Albertsons Stadium in Boise. Their opponent is Brigham Young University. BYU is a physical and talented bunch, but the Broncos’ defense has had some solid efforts this season. The 10-2 Wolverines settle for the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta, December 29 (noon on ESPN & WWJ- AM 950), as they play the Florida Gators in Mercedes- Benz Stadium. Coach Jim Harbaugh, of course, wishes his team was in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl or playing in the National Championship semi-finals at the Cotton or Orange Bowls. U-M will have to show up in Eastern vs. Georgia Southern Western vs. Brigham Young Atlanta motivated following their crushing defeat at the hands of Ohio State in Columbus on November 24 which ended Michigan’s Big Ten and national title hopes. The Wolverines only other loss was to Notre Dame. MSU (7-5) meanwhile plays in Santa Clara, California on New Year’s Eve in the Redbox Bowl at Levi’s Stadium against the Oregon Ducks (3 p.m. ESPN & WJR-AM 760). Coach Mark Dantonio's squad features a stalwart defense against star Ducks’ QB Justin Hebert. Sophomore Rocky Lombardi and senior Brian Lewerke have shared the quarterback load in 2018, with obvious mixed results. The Spartans lost Big Ten games to Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska and Northwestern. Hats off to the 15-0 Ferris State University Bulldogs as they play for the NCAA Division II Football Championship in McKinney, Texas on Saturday, December 15, 4 p.m. against Valdosta State of Georgia (13-0). Paul Rand: The Designer's Task at U-M Museum of ArtThe exhibition, Paul Rand: The Design-

er's Task, is showing now through Febru-ary 10, 2019 at the University of Michi-gan's Museum of Art, in Ann Arbor. Rand, a master of branding and corpo-

rate identity, was a giant of American design whose influential career spanned the second half of the twentieth century. The exhibit features posters, book cov-

ers, and packaging designs from Rand’s beginnings as a pro bono designer for arts and culture publications like Direc-tion magazine (an example is pictured) to his decades of crafting trailblazing corporate design for companies such as IBM. His visionary and pithy conceptions of

corporate and non-profit brand identi-ties—though often graphically mini-mal—embody the artist’s complex phi-losophy, interest in modernist aesthetics, and singular wit. Paul Rand: The Designer’s Task affords

viewers the opportunity to explore the genre of graphic design within the con-text of the art museum and examine how Rand’s intellectual process and impact on visual culture developed over time.

The University of Michigan Museum of Art is free to visit, although a suggested donation of $10 is appreciated. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, 12 noon – 5 p.m., closed Mondays. For more information, call (734) 764-0395, or see umma.umich.edu. The University of Michigan Museum of Art is located at 525 South State Street, in Ann Arbor.

SYMPHONIC NEWS

Ruth's Music Notes Ruth Crystal-Zaromp

I thought that the past weekend would be enter-taining, but it turned out to be so much more than that. The DSO on Thursday eve-

ning left the audience in awe. One tends to think that Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony would sound very routine after listening to it for the 100th time or so. However, even with a lifetime history of being ingrained in this music, the performance by conductor Carlos Miguel Pri-eto was exciting and entic-ing with new elements that we might not have heard before. Violinist Christian Tetzlaff

performed the Violin Concer-to in D Major by Brahms and the encore of a movement from a Bach violin sonata was totally engrossing. The next program of the

DSO classical series takes place this Friday morning and Saturday evening. Niko-laj Znaider will conduct and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras (pictured) will be perform-ing the Schumann Cello Con-certo. For more information,

check DSO.org. To hear Alvin Waddles and

Friends at Cranbrook Music Guild last Saturday after-noon revealed a rich light as the season progresses. The cooperation between Waddles, Marion Hayden (bass) and Djallo Djakate (percussion) enhanced the individual qualities of each. Waddles will also be appear-ing in a program honoring the 100th birthday of Leon-ard Bernstein at Kerrytown Concert House, on Saturday, December 15 at 8 p.m. Sunday was fulfilling to the

utmost with two unusual performances. First, Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, a piece

that isn’t performed very often because of its inane difficulties and seriously complicated Baroque style. Appearing at Christ Church Grosse Pointe, Scott Hanoian conducted a chamber or-chestra that was exception-al in its quality. Tenor Brian White’s German enunciation was extremely clear and un-derstandable and Bass Jake Surzyn supplemented in his quality of voice. The wife of Hanoian, soprano Meredith, is still growing in her vocal qualities since I first heard her some years ago. This performance of the

Christmas Oratorio is to be commended. Four out of the six cantatas were per-formed, parts 1, 2, 3, and 6, allowing the entire per-formance to be satisfying without being overdone for the audience. Grosse Pointe Christ Church will be per-forming the St. John Passion on Sunday, April 14, 2019, at 3 p.m. For more information, call (313) 885-4841. Finally, it was certainly a

relaxing end of evening to be able to see Menotti’s op-

era Amahl and the Night Visi-tors at the War Memorial in Grosse Pointe. This opera, dealing with

the Christmas idea from a child’s point of view is rela-tively short but totally en-grossing. The sets were col-orful, and the story might have been bearing the sad-der side of life, yet also re-vealed the hope and faith that carry us all through life’s difficulties. Natalie Nikolajevs as

Amahl appeared with deli-cate intonation and acting. The mother, Katherine DeY-oung was convincing in her role, and the three Magi and Page were entertaining. Conductor Oriol Sans held it all together, including the conducting of singers com-ing onstage from the back of the hall. Amahl will be showing

again at the Macomb Center for the Arts in two shows on December 22. If you want to entertain the entire family, this would be a very enjoy-able option. This coming weekend is

rich in events especially on

Sunday, December 16. The Pleyel series at the

Scarab Club is present-ing their first guest artist. Pianist Ling-Ju Lai will per-form works by Bach, Petri, Beethoven, Schubert, and Mendelssohn at 3 p.m.

At 4 p.m. in the Hill Audito-rium of Ann Arbor, Joyce Di-Donato will be giving a solo recital with distinguished conductor/pianist Yannick Nezet-Seguin collaborating with her. This should be ex-quisite.

This year saw an avalanche of theatrical releases (almost 150 from the major studios, and an astonishing 12,000 more titles were screened in the worldwide film market).Of course I didn't see them

all, no one could. But, from my still-pro-sized list of viewed movies, here are six that stood out for me.#1) A Simple Favor. I didn't

see a more surprising movie this year. Totally amusing.#2 Eighth Grade. Elsie Fish-

er as an insecure 13 year-old on her way to high school. #3 Bohemian Rhapsody. This

is Rami Malek's career defin-ing role as Freddie Mercury. #4 Spider-Man: Into the Spi-

der-Verse. A half-dozen Spi-der-man variants from other dimensions. Amazing.#5 Green Book. Racial, cul-

tural and intellectual divi-sions are bridged in this (mostly) true story.#6 The Ballad of Buster

Scruggs. Old West vignettes from the Coen Brothers. These six movies are worth

your time and attention. x 6

Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively star in A Simple Favor. My favorite movie of the year and the most clever, as well.

Elsie Fisher gives us a front-row seat in her Eighth Grade homeroom. From director Bo Burnham. Profoundly good.

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, the sadly iconic lead singer of Queen in Bohemian Rhapsody. Oscar-worthy.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Jaw-Dropping anima-tion from Marvel Studios. Super in every way.
