Recent All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Pierata (Pierro) is the latest addition to the burgeoning Aquis Farm roster,

after the operation confirmed their purchase of the four-year-old providing he passes a veterinary inspection.

Greg Hickman said yesterday that Pierata would not race again following the deal, with Aquis Farm later posting on social media: “Aquis can confirm they have entered a heads of agreement to purchase Pierata. However,

we stress the completion of the deal is subject to full veterinary inspection and fulfilling all stallion insurance requirements.”

Pierata broke through at the highest level at Randwick on Saturday after being placed three times in Group 1 company, with the victory seeing his value and appeal as a commercial stallion prospect soar.

“Being a colt and going to stud I think this is the right time (to retire him). He has won a Group 1 in great fashion and I think we maximised his potential (for a stallion deal) in what we would have got for him,” Hickman told ANZ Bloodstock News. Continued on page 2>>

Australian dual Group 1 winner Tarzino (Tavistock) and Reliable Man (Dalakhani), the sire of this year’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Sentimental Miss, will both stand for NZ$15,000 (all plus GST) this year to spearhead New Zealand breeding operation Westbury Stud’s six-strong stallion roster.

Tarzino, who won the 2015 Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and the Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) the following autumn, has four first-crop weanlings catalogued in next month’s New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka May Sale.

“I am sure he could have raced on and got better but the group decided this is the best time for him and now it is time to find another one.”

Pierata will join Widden Stud’s new acquisitions Trapeze Artist (Snitzel) and Written By (Written Tycoon), Arrowfield Stud’s The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice) and Showtime (Snitzel), Darley’s Kementari (Lonhro) and Aquis Farm’s fellow newcomers - the Japanese-bred Brave

Smash (Tosen Phantom) and Santos (I Am Invincible) - as Australian-raced horses who will begin their first season at stud in 2019.

A $160,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase in 2016 from the Kitchwin Hills draft by Hickman, Pierata went agonisingly close to his maiden Group 1 win when runner-up to Nature Strip (Nicconi) in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) in March and finished fifth in the T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) prior to Saturday’s win.

A juvenile winner at Randwick

on Anzac Day two years ago, Pierata won the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m) and was also runner-up to Kementari in last year’s Randwick Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m). Trapeze Artist, who will stand his first season for a fee of $99,000 (inc GST) this year, was third in the same race.

Pierata is a son of Group 3-winning mare November Flight (Flying Spur) and is a half-brother to Skyline Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner and Group 1-placed Ashokan (More Than Ready). His yearling half-brother by Rubick (Encosta De Lago) was purchased by Coolmore’s Tom Magnier and Ciaron Maher Bloodstock for $900,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale earlier this month.

Hickman said Pierata’s attitude had allowed the horse to excel as a four-year-old entire.

“He always wants to go out and do his best,” he said. “That is probably one thing we had to be careful of when we were working him - not that he wanted to over-race or anything - but he always wanted to please every time he went around.”

On the stud deal itself, Hickman commented: “They took blood from him to test his testosterone (levels) and had a look at him this morning and they are very happy with him.

“The lab test comes back sometime next week and when the contract is signed, they will bring a truck to come and pick him up.”

Hickman revealed the large syndicate had sold 100 per cent of Pierata and would not retain any lifetime breeding rights in the stallion.

“That was making things too complicated. We are all out, (the new owners) are all in and if the original owners want a foal by him they will have to pay the nomination fee,” he said.

“But they will have plenty of money to do that if they want to.”Meanwhile, Hickman’s other Randwick winner on Saturday, Top

Striker (High Chaparral), could head to the Ortensia Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Scone on May 11 or, if he misses the country carnival feature race, the seven-year-old is likely to be sent to the Sydney trainer’s Gold Coast satellite stable for the Queensland Winter Carnival.

Aquis buy stallion prospect SesarOn the same day the Pierata deal was confirmed, Aquis Farm also

announced that Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Sesar (Sebring) had been transferred to the Rosehill stable of Hawkes Racing.

Aquis Farm, who already part-owned the dual Group winner, has bought out its co-owners of the horse headed by Proven Thoroughbreds’ Jamie Walter.

Formerly trained in Brisbane by Steve O’Dea, Sesar won the Ken Russell Memorial (Gr 3, 1200m) at two before his Group 2 success at Randwick last October as a spring three-year-old.

Sesar, who has been leased back to his original owners by Aquis Farm until his racing career is over, has not raced since finishing unplaced in last year’s Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington last November.

He was purchased by Walter and O’Dea for $160,000 at the 2017 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

16 for Better Than ReadyThe Paul Butterworth-trained Wishfilly (2 f ex Hussonova by Hussonet) has broken through at her fourth start to further extend the lead in the first season sire title (by winners) for Better Than Ready (More Than Ready). Her sire’s 16th individual winner, Wishfilly, who was purchased by Alchemy Racing Syndications at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast March Yearling Sale for $18,000, defeated Ruella (Rubick) by a nose, with Real Sweet (Real Saga) another nose away third in a blanket finish. The Lyndhurst Stud-based Better Than Ready is also the sire of stakes winners The

Odyssey and Better Reflection, with his first season success seeing his 2019 service fee increased to $33,000 (inc GST) after standing for $9,900 (inc GST) last year.

Ten for RubickIn the following race at Ipswich, fellow first season sire Rubick (Encosta De Lago) continued his strong recent stream of victories with Ruuca (2 c ex Mining Tycoon by Redoute’s Choice) becoming his tenth individual winner. Trained by Toby Edmonds, the Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia-bred Ruuca defeated Rothenburg (Rothesay) by two lengths, with Octavian (Olympic Glory) another long neck away in third on the Heavy 9 surface. Ruuca, who is a $150,000 Magic

Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate, joins Yes Yes Yes, the stakes-placed Biscara and the likes of Rubic Rose and Erno as winners for the Coolmore Stud-based Rubick. His service fee has been increased to $38,500 (inc GST) for 2019.

Edmonds sticks with familyToby Edmonds was far from surprised by Ruuca’s victory at Ipswich, with the colt a half-brother to promising three-year-old stablemate Usmanov (Choisir) who won his first start at the same course last October. Edmonds said although Ruuca’s win was impressive, he remains cautious about raising the bar with the Rubick colt. “I shouldn’t say we won’t go on with him this winter but a spell has been in the back of my mind all along," Edmonds said. "I really do think if we give him more time to mature he can be pretty good.” Edmonds also purchased the sister to Usmanov by Choisir (Danehill Dancer) in conjunction with Blue Sky Bloodstock for $35,000 at this year’s Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.

The Chairman’s Sale catalogue finalisedThe Inglis Chairman’s Sale catalogue has been finalised, with 60 broodmares, stallion shares and breeding rights set to go under the hammer on the evening of Friday May 3. Fast Fleet (Fastnet Rock), the dam of multiple Group 1 winner

Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega), and Maastricht (Mastercraftsman), the dam of Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible), headline the Chairman’s Sale wildcard entries, while the main catalogue of 53 includes the likes of Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Aloisia (Azamour) and dual Group 1 winner Srikandi (Dubawi), who is in foal to Coolmore Stud shuttler American Pharoah (Pioneerof The Nile). The session headlines a big four days of breeding stock sales at Riverside Stables, which also includes the Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale. Click here to view The Chairman’s Sale catalogue.

Chaillot set for anotherupset in Listed raceArchie Alexander believes there was no fluke about Chaillot’s (Testa Rossa) debut performance, prompting him to let the two-year-old filly take her chance in today’s ANZAC Day Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington. Purchased by her trainer and McKeever Bloodstock for $25,000 at the Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale from the Baramul draft, Chaillot was sent out a $31 chance on debut at Ballarat earlier this month and defied her starting

price to come from near last for a length and three quarter victory over Stay Gold (Toorak Toff). "She was very good on debut," Alexander said. “It was a good win and I think there was no fluke about it. She came from basically last to first and won easily. She has got 54 kilograms, we've got a top jockey on and I think she will run well.”

Distance no concernfor JenstarDavid Brideoake's assistant trainer Alex Woodhams has no concerns about the distance of today’s VRC St Leger (Listed, 2800m) at Flemington for three-year-old Jenstar (High Chaparral). The progressive filly is coming off a last-start fifth in the Galilee Series Final (Listed, 2425m) at Caulfield on April 13 and Damien Oliver will replace Craig Newitt in the saddle for today’s race. "She's poked around at home and as she's had a few runs over a trip now it's more about maintaining her and keeping her happy," Woodhams said, before revealing that Jenstar is likely to press on to the SA Fillies Classic (Gr 3, 2500m) at Morphettville on May 18.

Waterhouse-Bott attempting to go back-to-backGai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott are hoping Transact (Dundeel) can provide them with their second VRC St Leger in as many years following Runaway’s (Manhattan Rain) victory in last year’s race. The gelding has hit the frame in his last three starts, most recently when runner-up in the Galilee Series Final where he finished ahead of the reopposing Jenstar. "I pick out one horse each year for the race and Transact fits the bill this year as he's a dead-set stayer," Waterhouse told the VRC. "He doesn't have a great turn of foot. That's why I thought Linda (Meech) should have led on him the other day at Caulfield as he's a bit one-paced. If she had I think he would have gone close."

Barrier blow for HightailHightail (Written Tycoon) will have to overcome a difficult draw if he is to land the inaugural running of The Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday. The Peter

and Paul Snowden-trained juvenile finished third in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) earlier in the season but has been drawn in stall 17 in the field of 16 plus four emergencies for this weekend’s $1 million contest. "Ten years ago, I would have thrown myself on the ground with that draw, but not these days," Peter Snowden told Racing.com. "There's nothing I can do about it. We've got to just try and get cover somewhere. You never know, sometimes you get a bit of luck, but you really need it from out there.

McCarthy’s double-handed attack on ShowdownElsewhere in The Showdown on Saturday, Brendan Mccarthy-trained close relations Luficer's Reward (Reward For Effort) and Oh So Rewarding (Reward For Effort) will chase the rich prize in the race restricted to two-year-olds by Victorian-based VOBIS nominated sires. Lucifer's Reward is a son of Petite Briefs (Brief Truce) while Oh So Rewarding is from Oh So Petite (Dash For

Cash), with both dams half-sisters out of the Snippets (Lunchtime) mare Petite Filou. "Knowing it was a race for Victorian horses we had the race in mind once they showed they had some ability," McCarthy said.

Mr Quickie to continue Derby campaignMr Quickie (Shamus Award) will be out to showcase his South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) credentials when he takes on older horses in Saturday's VOBIS Gold Heath (2000m) at Caulfield - his final planned lead-up race for next month’s Group 1 contest. The Phillip Stokes-trained gelding saw his sequence of six victories ended last-start when narrowly denied at the Melbourne track. "We've just lengthened his work a little bit now," Stokes said. "It's a small field and a competitive field, taking on the older horses, but I'm happy with him and I'm expecting a good run. The form has been franked from his last start. There was six kilos between the two and weight stops them.”

Rainer set for autumn redemptionJames Cummings is hoping Group 3 winner Ranier (Lonhro) can rediscover his best form when he lines up in the Hawkesbury Guineas (Gr 3, 1400m) on Saturday. The colt has had five starts this preparation and has failed to make the frame in all, most recentently finishing sixth in the ATC Carbine Club Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m) at Randwick on April 6. "It's fair to say he hasn't taken the next step this preparation, but at this time of the year he gets another chance," Cummings said. "He should enjoy the drop back to 1400 metres. It looks his type of race.”

Redzel to bounce backPeter Snowden admits he got it wrong by resting up Redzel (Snitzel) for too long following his spring campaign, but the trainer is adamant the dual winner of The Everest (1200m) is poised to find his best form when he races in the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. "He looks fit now - he looks the best he's ever looked," Snowden told Racing.com on Wednesday. "I gave him six weeks off (after last spring's VRC Sprint Classic) and I shouldn't have done it. But he'll be running well on Saturday and then he'll go to the (Doomben) 10,000 two weeks later."

Winter Bride after VictoryJoining Redzel in Saturday’s Victory Stakes is talented mare Winter Bride (Not A Single Doubt), who is going in search of a first success beyond Group 3 level. The four-year-old has been a model of consistency since joining Toby Edmonds's Gold Coast stables in late 2017, recording eight wins and five placings from 15 starts. "She has shown she is capable against some of the best mares in Australia and she just keeps on improving," Edmonds said. "She was a bit weak early in her career and has improved each campaign."

Orman’s Trustychance for 500Jockey Jim Orman can think of no better way to celebrate reaching his 500th winner than by scoring in another stakes race to boost his chances of an overseas contract. Orman, whose current tally of wins is 499, links with

Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) hopeful Trusty Lad (Reliable Man) in the Gunsynd Classic (Gr 3, 1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. "Trusty Lad has shown he can stay so we are on our way now after his good first up second at Eagle Farm two weeks ago," he said. "I am keen to apply again to get some international experience. Obviously to ride more stakes winners would help.”

Hickman fined over swabTrainer Greg Hickman has been fined $5,000 after Braces (Duporth) returned a positive swab to the prohibited anti-inflammatory meloxicam following his run at Rosehill on February 27. While stewards could not determine the cause of the low-level of meloxicam, Hickman pleaded guilty to presenting the horse to race with it in his system. Stewards took into account it was Hickman's first offence under the rule and fined the trainer $5,000 and disqualified Braces from the race.

Yendall remains sidelinedDean Yendall will miss the Warrnambool Carnival after failing to recover from injury in time. The 45-year-old is still more than a month away from resuming following a nasty break to his femur in a fall from Stellar Collision (Star Witness) in Adelaide on March 11. "I can't remember the last time I didn't ride at Warrnambool," Yendall told Racing.com. "Christine's (Christine Puls, wife) riding but we've got Mia at school so I'm doing a few of the home duties."

Keating, Bryan injuredin Wangaratta fallJohn Keating and Alexandra Bryan were taken to hospital after falling off after the winning post in the last race at Wangaratta yesterday. Keating was unseated from the winner Bonfire Gold (Golden Snake) in Thursday's 1300 metre race when the horse stumbled and fell 20 metres past the finishing line. Bryan, aboard sixth-placed Another Prince (Kuroshio), couldn't avoid the fallen horse and was also dislodged. It was later confirmed that Bryan has broken her left collarbone, while Keating has sustained stable fractures of the T4 and T7 and a high neck fracture. Keating will now be transported to Royal Melbourne for further assessment.

Rock On Wood readyfor stakes testRock On Wood (Redwood) will attempt to break his stakes race duck when he takes his chance in the Anzac Mile (Listed, 1600m) at Awapuni today. The Leanne Elliot-trained gelding has won his two most recent starts and she is hopeful he can keep that winning run going today. “It is going to be his biggest test to date, so we will see how we go,” Elliot said. “I think we’re going to have to go back a bit from the wide draw (15). Hopefully we’re not too far off them and we certainly would have liked a better draw.”

Mercy Hill set for hat-trickMercy Hill (All American) will seek to bring up a hat-trick in the Bruce Amies Pharmacy Governor General's Cup (1600m) at Avondale today. The four-year-old mare has won her past two starts over a mile at Counties and Avondale respectively. “The way she has won her last couple in that sort of company, she probably looks well-placed,” trainer Richard Collett said. “We would have been keen to take her to a Saturday mile race, but the ones in her grade are on left-handed tracks at the moment. She is super hard and fit and we will see what she does tomorrow. She won’t act much on a track rated worse than a slow7, so she is getting pretty much towards the end of her preparation.”

Travis send off for SuperaSupera (Savabeel) will have her final race of the season in the Travis Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Te Rapa on Saturday. The Sir Peter Vela-owned four-year-old kicked off the season with two dominant wins before adding a Group 2 placing, a Group 3 win and a Group 1 second to her race record. “She’s come a long way in a short time,” co-trainer Ken Kelso said. “She was always going to take time being by Savabeel and out of the family of Ethereal. It hasn’t always been easy as she can be headstrong and she’s had a few temperament issues which are improving. We’re just lucky that Sir Peter (Vela) has allowed us to take our time with her and she’s kept improving right through so hopefully there’s better things to come next season.”

Viddora lame after trackwork hit outViddora’s (I Am Invincible) Chairman’s Sprint Prize (Gr 1, 1200m) bid is up in the air after the Group 1-winning mare pulled up lame following a routine piece of track work at Sha Tin yesterday. The Lloyd Kennewell-trained six-year-old worked on the all-weather track on Wednesday morning with regular jockey Joe Bowditch aboard but Hong Kong Jockey Club vet, Dr Peter Curl, later noted she was lame in her right hind leg. He said she would be closely monitored ahead of Sunday's race.

Schofield lookingforward to RattanChad Schofield is confident Rattan (Savabeel) can put in a good performance when he lines up in the Chairman’s Sprint Prize at Sha Tin on Sunday. A last start winner of the Sprint Cup (Gr 2, 1200m), the five-year-old gelding will be on the hunt for his first win at elite level. “I’d expect he’d run very well,” Schofield said. “This is harder for him at the level weights and with a horse like Santa Ana Lane arriving, but I thought he won on his merits the other day. I galloped him Monday on the grass, he had a very light gallop and felt really good. He’s come through his win very nicely and taken no harm from it. I’m hoping for a good draw and I’m sure the horse is going to come and run a good race again.”

Pakistan Star outto defend QEII crownPakistan Star (Shamardal) will be out to secure consecutive wins in the Queen Elizabeth II Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) when he lines up in the Group 1 at Sha Tin on Sunday. The six-year-old gelding will be having his second run for Paul O’Sullivan, having formerly been trained by Tony Cruz. "He's a got a bit of mileage on the clock now, the old boy," O’Sullivan said. “His last few races, he doesn't seem to have had much of a run in him. Once upon a time, he'd pull out at the 500 (metres) and keep charging to the line. Even the other day, he dashed and peaked on it. It might have been his condition, he'd had a fair while off - but he doesn't seem to have the big, long run he used to have."

291 for GalileoCoolmore Stud-stalwart Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) was provided with his 291st stakes winner yesterday courtesy of Cape Of Good Hope’s (3 c ex Hveger by Danehill) victory in the Blue Riband Trial (Listed, 1m2f) at Epsom. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt showed a determined attitude to fend off the late challenge of Cap Francais (Frankel) by half a length, with Turgenev (Dubawi) a further three quarters of a length adrift in third. Galileo currently stands at Coolmore Stud in Ireland for a private fee.

Cape cut for DerbyFollowing yesterday’s Derby trial victory, Cape Of Good Hope - a brother to Highland Reel and Idaho out of the Australian-bred mare Hveger (Danehill) - was halved in price for the Epsom Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) in June. Kevin Buckley, representing O'Brien and Coolmore, said: "Cape Of Good Hope has done particularly well over the winter and was only just ready to start so has run a wonderful race. He has lot to live up to as a brother to Highland Reel and Idaho. Ryan was delighted with how he handled the track."

Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale underwayThe Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale got underway yesterday with horses breezing down the straight at Doncaster ahead of selling, which is due to kick off at 11am today. 160 two-year-olds are catalogued for the sale, including the progeny of

shuttle sires No Nay Never (Scat Daddy), Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) and Cable Bay (Invincible Spirit). Click here to view the catalogue.

31 go forward for 2,000 GuineasA total of 31 horses remain in contention for the 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket on May 4 after the latest forfeit stage. The likes of Ten Sovereigns (No Nay Never), Calyx (Kingman) and recent Craven Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) winner Skardu (Shamardal) feature among the contenders, while ante-post favourite Too Darn Hot (Dubawi) was the most notable omission having been ruled out through injury. Meanwhile, 24 horses stood their ground for the fillies’ equivalent - the 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) - with the Nell Gwyn (Gr 3, 7f) quinella of Qabala (Scat Daddy) and Mot Juste (Distorted Humor) both among the names still in the mix for the Group 1, which takes place on May 5.

Ghaiyyath set for Prix GanayThe highly-promising Ghaiyyath (Dubawi), an emphatic last-start winner of the Prix d'Harcourt (Gr 2, 2000m) at Longchamp, will bid for his first Group 1 success in the Prix Ganay (Gr 1, 2100m) at Longchamp on Sunday. "We tried running a pacemaker for Ghaiyyath in the Harcourt but James Doyle on Lucius Tiberius couldn't get near him, so we won't need to do that again,” trainer Charlie Appleby said. “Ghaiyyath has earned a crack at the Ganay, in which he faces his first acid test. We know he likes Longchamp and I'm not worried that the distance is ten and a half furlongs as he wasn't stopping over a slightly lesser trip last time. He enjoys cut in the ground and hopefully should get some."

Crystal Ocean declared for Gordon Richards StakesSir Michael Stoute will bid for a tenth Gordon Richards Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) on Friday after last year's winner Crystal Ocean (Sea The Stars) was declared for the Sandown contest. The five-year-old entire scraped home from Fabricate (Makfi) – who reopposes – twelve months ago and will face a field of seven, including dual Group 1 placegetter Thundering Blue (Exchange Rate). France will also be represented in the Group 3 through the Andre Fabre-trained Trais Fluors (Dansili), a winner at Chantilly last time out.

Australian dual Group 1 winner Tarzino (Tavistock) and Reliable Man (Dalakhani), the sire of this year’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1,

2400m) winner Sentimental Miss, will both stand for NZ$15,000 (all plus GST) this year to spearhead New Zealand breeding operation Westbury Stud’s six-strong stallion roster.

“In his second season last year he was the third highest stallion on coverings in New Zealand behind Savabeel and Almanzor with

132 mares,” Westbury Stud general manager Russell Warwick told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“He is throwing nice foals who look very much like Zabeel, so we will find favour for them come (yearling) sale time next year.”

Reliable Man is the sire of eight individual stakes winners including Group 2 winner Belle Du Nord, while promising two-year-old Aalaalune was narrowly denied by Yourdeel (Dundeel) when runner-up in the Sistema Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) this autumn.

The racetrack deeds of Reliable Man, who won the 2013 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick before being retired to Westbury Stud, could be further boosted with Grinzinger Star and Trusty Lad being set for the South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) and Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) respectively.

“We feel at NZ$15,000 he is extremely good value and he has a number of good three-year-olds running around at the moment,” Warwick said.

“He won an Oaks this year and has three Derby prospects in the next month as well.

“Even a horse like Sully last year, he was beaten a nose in a (VRC) Queen Elizabeth, was fifth in the Moonee Valley Cup and was beaten

a nose in the Cranbourne Cup, so he was all around it last year.

“He has the Oaks winner and a smart two-year-old in Aalaalune, so he has those other crops coming behind which gives him that support. Apart from Pierro, I think he is doing as well as any stallion out there with the four-year-olds as their oldest crop.”

Westbury Stud will also stand Redwood (High Chaparral) and Swiss Ace (Secret Savings) for NZ$10,000 while El Roca’s (Fastnet Rock) fee has been increased to NZ$9,000 this year.

El Roca is the sire of two first-crop juvenile winners this season including the stakes-placed Bella Mente, who ran third in the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind Yourdeel, while maiden colt Moeraki is also stakes-placed.

“He has a Group 1 placegetter and a Group 3 placegetter, a colt and filly, two impressive winners and another five or six trial winners with a number simmering away ready to go,” Warwick said.

“Like Fastnet Rock himself, he won three Group 1s as a three-year-old, so the sireline is very much renowned for its improvement as they get older.”

Warwick continued: “Redwood is doing a good job. He quinellaed the Naturalism (last year), he has got a couple of really good three-year-olds like Platinum Invador and that horse has just sold for a lot of money to Hong Kong.

“Swiss Ace is very popular up in Asia and is doing a good job up there, so there is something there for everyone at all levels and an opportunity for people to make some money out of the game.”

Telperion (Street Cry), who is a half-brother to Group 1 winner Kementari (Lonhro), will stand for an unchanged NZ$5,000 this year to round out the Westbury Stud stallion roster.

Queen Elizabeth II Cup(Gr 1, 2000m) Dark Dream (All American)

With some possibility of rain on Sunday, trainer Frankie Lor said: "It looks like he's a good horse on the soft. If it does rain it will help him but last time he won on the fast track, so I'm not worried."

Deirdre (Harbinger)

Galloped 800 metres of the turf track and clocked 46.5 seconds (25.5, 20.9) under Yutaka Take.

Trainer Mitsuru Hashida said: "She was initially a bit nervous with the hot weather and humidity when she flew in, but she has settled into it. I asked Take to drive her stronger towards the end of the gallop. She moved very nicely and finished her gallop with very good speed. She's in good condition. Stretching out to 2000 metres will be to her advantage. She has already collected silver and bronze medals, so hopefully she can grab the gold one this time."

Jockey Yutaka Take said: "It was my first ride on Deirdre this morning. She is really easy to ride, she has settled in well and is in good condition. She moved nicely and had a solid, fast workout and I am looking forward to racing on Sunday. She really likes travelling, she is a proven shipper and has not had any travel sickness from Dubai. Since the field is very strong, including the high-class Japanese runners, to win the race she needs to step up on what she's done before. The 2000 metres should be more suitable for her compared to 1800 metres."

Eagle Way (More Than Ready) Trainer John Moore said: "He went one and

a half laps on the small track with a riding boy who is very light and he seemed very well in himself."

Eminent (Frankel)

Part-owner Hubie De Burgh said: "Sir Mark (Todd) reports he has settled in really well. He had an easy canter on the all-weather track this morning and looking at the vision, of the horse, on the big screen he looks absolutely amazing. We look forward to the battle on Sunday."

Lys Gracieux (Heart's Cry)

Worked on the turf and clocked 48 seconds (26.6, 21.4) for 800 metres.

Trainer Yoshito Yahagi said: "I asked the rider to keep her in a rhythm and comfortable while she was working today. This second time trip to Hong Kong has been the biggest factor for her, I was a bit worried about the journey from Japan by herself but she travelled over well and has settled into the surroundings here quickly. Just after she ran second in the Hong Kong Vase last December, we decided to bring her again for this race so this has been the plan. I think the 2000 metres is more suitable for her than 2400 metres. She raced from the back in the Vase but this time a more forward position would be better. She will be very competitive."

runner-up and seventh to Dark Dream in a Class 1 at the course and distance last time.

Trainer John Size said: "His last start, I think he covered a bit of ground, he was caught wide at some stages in a pretty fast-run-race, there was a good speed on, and the track was rather quick. I think he found it a little bit tough, he wasn't able to keep running at that tempo.

"Since then there has been some changes, the track won't be so fast, the speed of the race probably won't be so quick, he might even draw a gate for a change, all those things could help him earn some prize-money in the race.

"He's a little bit disadvantaged as far as ratings are concerned: the Group 1 international winners are far superior to him on paper but our four-year-olds have always acquitted themselves well in this event, so probably because they're coming off a Derby preparation they have that background and they're racing at home, so they have some good advantages that way, so hopefully the home team runs well."

Win Bright (Stay Gold)

Galloped on the turf and clocked 1:16.5 seconds (28.5, 26.3, 21.7) for 1200 metres.

Jockey Masami Matsuoka said: "He has not done too much during the export quarantine period since he left Japan, so I took him for a steady gallop today. My only concern was to keep his rhythm during the work and he moved nicely. It was good work today."

Champions Mile(Gr 1, 1600m)Beauty Generation (Road To Rock)

Trainer John Moore said: "This morning he went around on the big track, just one and a half laps at a nice, open canter. I put him on the big track because the small track can get busy and I don't want to risk him getting caught up in a traffic jam. He did it very nicely."

Romantic Touch (Northern Meteor)

Jockey Matthew Chadwick said: "He's coming up against Beauty Generation and a few other horses going through the grades nicely. He tries his heart out, he's a genuine horse, and he's shown that he can match up to some of the best on his day with the right run. Just get the best run and see if we can pick up some prize money."

Chairman’s Sprint Prize(Gr 1, 1200m)Beat The Clock (Hinchinbrook)

Trainer John Size said: "He's fine and he seems very strong at the end of the season. He's got to the correct age to be a good competitor, his international (Hong Kong Sprint) run was his second run back from a spell and he's done well since then. He's going to go into the race in very good condition and it's a pretty strong race."

Enzo’s Lad (Society Rock)

The Michael Pitman-trained New Zealand visitor cantered on the all-weather track.

Hong Kong Jockey Club consultant Mark

Player said: "It was his first time on to the track since arriving on Sunday and Brittany (Moore) who rode him told me he was bright and well and feeling good in himself."

Nac Venus (Daiwa Major)

Worked on the turf and clocked 54.6 seconds (30.6, 24.0) through 800 metres under his exercise rider Hirokimi Tamogi.

Tamogi said: "I did not ask her too much this morning because I wanted to save her energy. It was an unfamiliar track for her, which made her a bit eager to grab hold of the track. But she felt good today. She is in good form and has been the same as how she is at home."

Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega)

Cantered one lap of the all-weather track under regular rider Will Stewart.

Hong Kong Jockey Club consultant Mark Player said: "Will told me the horse felt great and seems to have come through the flight in very good order."

Viddora (I Am Invincible)

Cantered on the all-weather track under big-race jockey Joe Bowditch.

Trainer Lloyd Kennewell said: "I think her

form is pretty good. Her run the other night in Dubai was terrific. It was a top class race. Blue Point is obviously one of the best sprinters in the world and the Americans, who ran second and third, are always hard to beat there. She beat the rest quite comfortably and she's better around the turn and on a firmer track.

"Santa Ana Lane? We have beaten him in a Group 1 so that's one good thing we have up our sleeve. He's gone to another level that horse, of course, and if he's travelled well and settled in well, and races to where he's up to at the moment he's going to be hard to beat. We're confident about our mare and what she can do and we're looking forward to getting out there on Sunday. We intend to give her a gallop tomorrow morning."

Castelvecchio’s (Dundeel) [121] impressive victory in Saturday’s Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick has resulted in the colt

becoming the equal top-ranked juvenile of the season, writes Ken Boman.

After settling back in fifth place behind a fast pace, Castelvecchio demonstrated his class and stamina in drawing clear to score by a length and a half from Loving Gaby (I Am Invincible) [113] with Lady Lupino (Sebring) third in the fast time of 1:33.31.

Castelvecchio’s performance was rated by Timeform at 121, which is the highest rating returned in the Champagne Stakes since Pierro’s (Lonhro) [127] win in 2012.

It was also a new career peak for Castelvecchio being two pounds superior to his 119-rated placing behind co-juvenile leader Microphone (Exceed And Excel) [121] in the Inglis Sires’ (registered as ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes) (Gr 1, 1400m) on April 6.

In the other feature at Randwick on Saturday, the weight-for-age All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) went to the Greg Hickman-trained entire Pierata (Pierro) [121] who recorded a deserved victory, his first at elite level after placing on three previous occasions.

After enjoying a good trip under Tommy Berry, Pierata finished strongly and held off a late bid from Godolphin’s Osborne Bulls (Street

Cry) [120] with Siege Of Quebec (Fastnet Rock) [118] a good third.

The win was not exceptionally highly-rated, however, with Pierata’s 121 figure being two pounds below the 123 winners’ average rating in the race for the past five years.

The rating was also four pounds under Pierata’s 125 career best achieved when a nose second in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) on March 23 and when easily winning last year’s Sydney Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick.

Earlier on Saturday’s card, the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman-trained The Chosen One (Savabeel) [112+] showed he is a young stayer with spring claims by staging a bold performance in winning the Frank Packer Plate (Gr 3, 2000m).

After settling at the tail of the 12-horse field, The Chosen One finished strongly under a well-judged Blake Shinn ride to score decisively by a length and a half from the Chris Waller-trained Dealmaker (Dundeel) in the quick time of 2:00.97.

Timeform rated the effort at 112+ which was a pound below The Chosen One’s 112-rated performance when the colt made late ground for fourth behind Angel Of Truth (Animal Kingdom) [121] in the ATC Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) on April 6.

The Chosen One’s victory in the Frank Packer Plate also compared favourably to the winners’ 111 average rating for the past five years, his 112+ figure being one pound superior.

Castelvecchio’s victory sees him become equal top-ranked juvenile for 2018-2019

The Ocala Breeders' Sales (OBS) kicked off its Spring Sale of Two-Year-Olds in training during a solid session on Tuesday, with gains in

average and median prices when compared

with the opener of last year's record auction in Ocala, Florida.

From 304 head cataloged on the day, OBS reported 151 horses brought a total of US$14,243,500 compared with 168

selling for a total of US$15,904,000 at last year's opening session. The average price was US$96,240, compared to US$94,667 in 2018 while the median price was US$58,500, compared with US$52,000 a year ago. The buyback rate was 30 per cent; it was 20 per cent last year.

On Tuesday, a dozen horses changed hands for a price of

US$250,000 and above, compared with 14 at that level a year ago. This year, there were no horses selling above US$500,000 on day one, compared with two individuals last year.

"I think it was a good start," said Tod Wojciechowski, OBS director of sales, noting there was broad-based activity by domestic and foreign buyers. "I think it demonstrated the international importance of the sale. I have been impressed with the wide variety and array of buyers from all over the world. We saw buyers from Korea, Japan, the Middle East, domestic, and I think we will see that throughout all four days."

The top price Tuesday of US$430,000 was paid by Timothy Hills, agent for Patrick Welsh, for a son of Hard Spun (Danzig) consigned by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables. The chestnut colt worked a quarter in :21 flat during the under tack show. He is out of stakes winner Katerbug (Pulpit), a half-sister to stakes winner Outplay (Bernardini) and he was catalogued as Lot 207.

Narvick International, agent for Katsumi Yoshida, went to US$425,000 to acquire a son of Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) consigned by Niall Brennan Stables, agent. Catalogued as Lot 169, the bay colt breezed a quarter-mile in :21 4/5 during his pre-sale workout. He is a half-brother to Graded stakes winner Isabella Sings (Eskendereya), out of stakes-placed Isobel Baillie (Lomitas).

Some consignors said the first day's action could have been impacted by conditions during the first day's under tack show workouts on April 15, when the horses breezed into a strong headwind, and by two days of workouts that were cancelled due to rain and strong winds.

As a result of the Friday and Saturday cancellations, there was a long day of workouts Sunday, with buyers left to inspect those horses Monday and early Tuesday before the noon start time.

Some 200 of the horses offered on Tuesday breezed on April 15.

"Unfortunately for those horses selling early that got hit with the headwind that first day, and then with the change in the schedule, I think people got a little behind (in looking)," said Dunne.

"I think people came in late and almost bypassed today with the combination of the

times the horses went and the time they had to do their work. I think it's just going to get stronger as it (the sale) goes and I think we're seeing a little bit of that now with the horses that breezed the second day, they're starting to sell stronger."

"It's not like the deck is stacked any particular way; horses fall in the catalogue the way horses fall," Wojciechowski said of the first day.

Dunne said the buying pattern on Tuesday

reflected buyers' desires for horses that posted the fastest workout times.

"It's all or nothing," he said. "Whether people want to admit it or not, it's all about time. It's understandable if you're an agent or a trainer and you're trying to sell a horse to someone, it's hard to explain why you want to buy one that went in :21 4/5 when there is one down the shedrow that went :21 1/5. I would say those horses had a huge disadvantage. "

Eddie Woods, whose consignment sold all 14 horses sent through the ring Tuesday, said the market was similar to what has been seen in other domestic sales over the past several years, with the usual emphasis on quality.

"It wasn't pretty or anything, but they sold," Woods said. "The top end is solid, like always, and then after that it gets really tricky."
