Reading: Comprehension Skills

1. ‘...chimneys that plumed with thick,

white smoke’ In this sentence, what

does ‘plumed’ imply about the

amount of smoke?

2. What date was the hottest day the UK

had seen in over thirty years?

3. Why were people shocked about the

weather?

4. What do you think that Simon Thomas

may do next?

A Very Unusual Winter

Children across the country splashed and frolicked in

the paddling pool, wearing their swimming costumes

and thick streaks of sun cream. Windows were wide

open, fans were out of stock in most high street shops

and the ice cream van hadn’t made so much money

in ages. It was the hottest day the United Kingdom

had seen in over thirty years... yet it was the 21st

December.

For as long as anyone could remember, the 21st of

December had been an icy, cold day. Commuters

walked to work, wrapped up tightly in thick coats

and scarves, past chimneys that plumed with thick,

white smoke as families gathered around the

fireplace to keep warm... but not this year. Something

very unusual seemed to be happening and one man

– Simon Thomas – thought he knew why...

Maths: Simplifying Fractions

We are no longer able to publish

Maths- No Problem material on our school

website.

Today we will be completing lessons 12 &

13 on Simplifying Fractions. The guidance

for this can be found on Class Dojo.

Spelling: Contracted Words with Apostrophes

The spellings this week are words that include apostrophes for contraction.

e.g. could not = couldn’t

These words are always tricky to spell, because of the schwa vowel sound.

Observation - If you were in the rainforest, what can you see?

I can see a fine mist spreading through the canopy of the beautiful rainforest.A slither of snakes slide through the undergrowth towards the shade of the thickest shrub.

Senses – Anything you think you could HEAR, TOUCH, TASTE, SMELL but not see.

I can feel the gentle haze of the spray from the waterfall as it descends into the plunge pool below.I can smell the plethora of flowers as they sway in the breeze of the understory.I can hear the crunch of bone-dry leaves being crushed under my hiking boots.

Imagination – What questions would you ask yourself if you were in the rainforest?

What sort of creatures are hidden in the undergrowth?Which direction should I investigate first? What is making that rustling sound? Is it always this hot?

Emotion – What are you feeling as you are in the rainforest

The fear I am feeling at this moment is unbelievable as I cansense that there are many creatures larger than me.I am amazed by the amount of different species all around me.I hope I escape from the depths of the forest before nightfall.

Click the link and listen to the rainforest sounds as you complete the Imagination and Emotion sections.

Today and Tomorrow: Independent Research

Choose an animal you are really interested in.

It can be from any habitat and not just from the rainforest that we have been studying in Literacy this week.

Create an information booklet or poster about this animal.

You may want to include:

Where it lives, what it eats, where it sits in a food chain, what countries it is found in, how large they are, if it could be a pet or not, if it is endangered or not and so on.
