Twenty years ago a book called A Fortunate Life was published in Australia and quickly sold over half a million
copies. Its author, Albert Facey, was eighty-seven years old.
The back cover of the book gave this insight as to the nature of the contents. This is the amazing life of an
extraordinary man who lived with simple honesty, compassion and courage. A parentless boy who started work at
eight on the rough West Australian Frontier, he struggled as an itinerant rural worker, survived the gore of
Gallipoli, the loss of his farm in the Depression, the death of his son in World War II and that of his beloved wife
after sixty devoted years – yet felt that his life was fortunate. The reader will be stunned by the horror this man
endured in his childhood and humbled by his gentle acceptance of good and bad.
Perhaps the stand out words in the summary are …. an extraordinary man who lived with simple honesty,
compassion and courage. These words are important because they are the qualities that come from within and
so best described the type of person he was. Like Albert Facey, we are the sum total of our choices. The fortune
in our life will nearly always depend on how we deal with the small things of each day and the occasional big
event that will inevitably cross our path. Many a time our personal courage will be tested whether it be in a
circumstance of fear or plodding along when we feel like giving in, or when we are in a situation of uncertainty,
even danger, and stand firm.
Mary MacKillop was an ordinary woman who lived with simple honesty, compassion and courage. From humble
beginnings, Mary responded to the call to devote her life to the poor and the marginalised, giving of herself so
that others may have life. Together with Fr Julian Tenison Woods, Mary brought to fruition the dream of
founding a group of women who would then work in responding to the needs of children by way of education as
well as the poor, the destitute and the socially unaccepted offering shelter, food and comfort. She was indeed a
woman of deep faith, who above everything wanted to simply do God’s work.
However, Mary’s life was certainly not without its troubles and obstacles. Throughout her life she experienced
considerable sadness, bouts of ill-health and the stiff and unprincipled opposition of the church hierarchy
including that of her own Sisters. Steadfast in her faith, Mary remained committed to her calling, never wavering
in her commitment to undertake God’s work with incredible humility, fortitude, generosity and love. Indeed she
was a woman who showed great courage in all aspects of her life.
Last week, we celebrated the Feast of St Mary MacKillop of the Cross (Thursday, August 8) and may we learn
from Mary how to be people of courage; people who are willing to walk that extra mile despite the challenges
and troubles that come our way in an effort to make our world a better place to be, by responding to the needs
of those who may be poor, less fortunate, misunderstood and unaccepted.

District Athletics Carnival
On Wednesday the 14th of August, 27 grade 3-6 students attended the District Athletics Carnival at Joe Carmody Athletics Track in Newborough. The students participated in a range of athletic events and many of our students performed so well that they have moved through to the next round (Division Athletics). The students had a wonderful day, and their sportsmanship and attitudes reflected the expectations of our school community.
In the 100m relays, every team that we entered received a place. The 11 year old boys ran extremely well and came first in their race. Other notable athletes were Goy, Harmonie, Steve, Levi, Claudia, Emmy and Ramon, who came first place in their individual events. A special thanks goes out to the amazing parents that came to support our students and volunteered their time to run the shot put event. It was a great day and the students enjoyed the opportunity to represent our school at district level.
