2017 Annual Report


No matter who we are or where we come from, we all deserve to have a decent life and decent housing. Every person should have the opportunity for safety and stability. Every one of us should know we have the power to take care of ourselves and to build our own futures. The “hand up” we extend allows families in our community to know the peace of mind that affordable and secure housing provides. Habitat families acquire the financial skills necessary to help them break from poverty. Families experience the feeling of accomplishment and gain strength that comes from earning, paying for, and building or repairing their own home.

Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities had a very successful year empowering families to become stable, self-sufficient and secure through affordable and safe shelter. We completed our 100th home and celebrated the 5th anniversary of operating the ReStore Health and Home division. We had approximately 3025 individuals volunteer with us this past year, built 5 new homes, and helped an additional 21 families improve their current homes through our neighborhood revitalization and repair efforts. In addition, we diverted 1.5 million pounds of material from area landfills. We could not have accomplished all of that without your support.

As we move into this new year we will be celebrating our affiliate’s 25th anniversary and the 15th anniversary of our Habitat ReStore, both exciting and momentous occasions. We hope you will join us in celebrating these achievements. We also hope we can count on your continuing support as we move forward helping families repair or build homes. These homes will serve as the foundation for the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to thrive. Homes that represent the journey to a brighter future!

This year’s Neighborhood Revitalization program in the City of Moline’s Floreciente neighborhood

can best be described in one word – IMPACT! Our Neighborhood Revitalization program has

allowed us to serve more families in this area with an expanded array of products, services and

partnerships. We continued to listen and work with residents and stakeholders to improve the

quality of life in the neighborhood while helping support the resident’s vision for the future.

With volunteers and funders, we helped strengthen and inspired hope across the neighborhood.

100th Home Block/Brush with Kindness Program

The location of the affiliate’s 100th home landed right in the heart of the Floreciente neighborhood.

Partnerships were established with the nine property owners on this special block to complete

exterior improvements to their properties. From concrete repairs to painting, power washing to

porch repair – every property received a special Brush With Kindness.

Critical Repair Program

Four Critical Repair projects were completed this past year. In addition to replacing worn out

materials, repairs included accessibility modifications, electrical and plumbing repairs, and new

roofing and siding.

Thrivent Financial Project

Community and Thrivent Financial volunteers joined forces with seven local Moline churches to

replace two handicap ramps and seven porches in the neighborhood. This show of force removed

hazards and provided five families with safe access to their homes.

Healthy Home Workshops

Three Healthy Home workshops offered Floreciente residents information on saving energy and

maintaining their home. We partnered with staff from the Lowe’s Home Improvement store in

Moline who shared their expertise on a variety of topics.

work day sponsors

You can always find a Habitat job site open

on a Saturday; but, we often find companies

and organizations who want to participate in a

day of team building and volunteering at one

of our job sites during the week. For those

groups we offer a workday sponsorship.

Volunteers from across the community show

up to represent groups big and small. From

long time ardent supporters like John Deere

to new groups like CNH Industrial. In 2017,

we had 31 organizations sponsor work days.

Work Day participants can help with new

construction or Neighborhood Revitalization

projects by completing tasks as complicated

as cement work or as challenging as

dry-walling. No special skills are needed to

volunteer, but we do get professional help

from time to time when the ringers from Bush,

Estes, or Russell Construction companies

When Edoh and N’Labiko began their Habitat

journey their oldest daughter, Comfort, was

only 4 months old. They selected a park-like

lot in Davenport. With Edoh’s hard work and

N’Labiko’s dedication it wasn’t long before Comfort was picking out a “pretty pink” light for her “very

own” room. By the time of the dedication the family welcomed a second daughter, Gracia. The

rain poured down on the day of their dedication but that didn’t dampen their spirits or prevent their

new home from being filled with love.

This family’s success and growth since applying to be a

partner family has been unmatched. Sophie and Theo

entered the program as a young couple. They celebrated

Christmas in their home this year as a family of 4.

Christopher was so excited for his new home he wasn’t

about to hold still for a family photo on the day of their

dedication. In early December, he also became a big

brother to Lily.

In addition to the growth in their family, both have also seen

job promotions since entering into the Habitat program. We

look forward to the bright future that lies ahead for this

beautiful family.

We are challenged to find a family that is as hard

working as the Harper family. Each adult member of a

partner family is expected to complete 250 sweat

equity hours for their homes. Tracy and Barry doubled

that by completing over 500 hours each towards their

home and our first home in Milan, IL. Daughter, Grace

even got in on the action earning 20 hours, or an hour

for every “A” she received in school.

Perseverance, persistence, and passion. Michelle, Jerry

During their time in our program they were faced with one

challenge on top of another. From financial challenges of

car repairs to having to become caretaker to their

caregiver; we couldn’t be more proud of this family and

their ability to pull together time and time again.

Koffi and CeCe welcomed their third child shortly after they

moved into their home and were also joined by Koffi’s mom

who came from Africa to help with the growing family. The

family’s enthusiasm and willingness to perform their sweat

equity hours made this family stand out from the beginning.

They made it into their home this year in enough time to get a

bountiful harvest from their incredible backyard garden.


Habitat for Humanity Quad Cities reached a significant milestone when we dedicated our 100th house in June of 2017. To fund this special project we had 96 individuals step up, each donating $1,000 to the home. In addition, the Moline Foundation supported this build as did long-time volunteers Scott and Amy (Penry) Sisul. When Scott and Amy decided to get married, they also decided to use this special occasion to celebrate and support Habitat. They held a Habitat themed wedding and reception and in addition, asked their guests to donate to Habitat rather than purchase them gifts. They also made a personal donation to support this build. We were proud to have them serve as honorary co-chairs of the 100th build alongside eleven year old Jack Kakert. After attending a home dedication with his mother, Jack quickly realized the importance of our work and contributed his own money to help with the building of this home. The home was built for Theo Tapoayi and his wife Sophie Gbadamassi-Gloh. Theo and Sophie were extremely gracious with their time and generously shared their dedication with the record number of people who wanted to help celebrate this important milestone for Habitat. They also served as Habitat spokespeople during various press interviews and events throughout the year. The 100th home is situated in the heart of the Floreciente neighborhood in downtown Moline and was the eighth home to be completed in this neighborhood. In addition to our 100th home, the whole block got some extra TLC with the help of the Neighborhood Revitalization program. Partnerships were established with property owners on this special block to complete exterior improvements to their properties in an effort we called A Brush With Kindness.

ReStore sales continued to grow in 2017, as they have during the last 10 years. Sales have increased nearly three fold since 2008 while contributions to the affiliate increased almost 700% (during that time period). This has been accomplished by the work of an incredible paid and volunteer staff that operates ReStore throughout the year. By the end of 2017, ReStore had an average of 83 volunteers contributing approximately 1200 hours per month. That’s the equivalent of 7 full time staff. Our hard-working box truck required replacement in 2017 due to some serious mechanical problems. You might not have noticed the difference since we were able to find a very similar looking truck and reuse our old box. Our pick up service is a critical tool in keeping our sales floor fresh and exciting. Staff traveled as far as Freeport, IL and Dubuque, IA this year for some valuable donations. Health & Home celebrated their 5 year anniversary in the fall. The services we have been providing the community got the attention of the local press who featured us on KWQC’s Paula Sands Live among other outlets. Home medical equipment is the fastest growing revenue line in our stores and it continues to be a huge blessing and resource to the community.

Our annual golf outing had an interesting twist this year; there

was no golf! For the first time in its history the Golf Fore

Homes outing was cancelled due to weather. Rain during the

week leading into the event and a steady down pour the day

of the event created impossible conditions for the course and

our golfers. Despite the rain, all of our sponsors and a large

majority of our participants allowed us to keep their entry fees

enabling us to still raise over $11,000 for homebuilding in the

Quad Cities.

In addition to the sponsors, Indian Bluff Golf Course in Milan,

and Guy and a Grill, also graciously allowed us the weather

cancellation without penalty to our event budget. We are

grateful for their cooperation and look forward to a dryer golf

outing next year!

2017 Habitat highlights

Crawfish Boil We were blessed to be the charity recipient of Hi-Neighbor

Publications Crawfish Boil at Kelly’s Pub in June. This afternoon

event, coincided nicely with our 100th home dedication. Friends,

supporters, and crawfish aficionados all came out to celebrate the

amazing build team that made our 100th home possible!
