I n t e r d i s c i p l i n a r y R e s e a r c hIn this section a study of collaboration and communication within teams in theconstruction industry illustrates how distributed cognition has influenced researchin computer-mediated communication. Special attention is paid to the organisationof interactive events in co-located, media and virtual spaces.5 .1 A S t u d y o f I n f o r m a t i o n a n d C o m m u n i c a ti o n s T e c h n o l o g y i n C o n s tr u c t io n :I n S e a r c h o f a C o m m u n i c a t io n - B a s e d F r a m e w o r kAdvanced interactive technology is now becoming widely available. It is often regardedas a tool for making the hidden socio-informational processes more visible. Thusthere is a possibility of it supporting situations, such as those found in the constructionindustry, where people are often dispersed at remote locations, and have tocommunicate and cooperate 'at arm's length'. The most common reasons forcommunication problems are to do with the nature of the activity. However wellplanned the construction process may be, there are always unpredictable problemscaused by the conditions on the construction site, which necessitate changes indesign. Communicating what the site conditions are like on a given occasion, overthe telephone or in a memo is very hard and much of the important information islost due to the limitations o f voice and text as modes of communication. Mult imediacan provide a richer informational environment to supply the important informationto all participants, regardless of their physica l location. They can be virtually presenteven if the site is in Kent and the architect in Sydney.

This is also an exciting and attractive vision of technology making work betterand easier for people. However, immersing people at work into a computer gamestype of reality does not help them perform their tasks. They do not need to havetheir perceptions challenged by the strangeness of the reality on the screen. Theyneed relevant information presented in a way that they can use directly in problemsolving. The technology designers need to know what the relevant information isand how it can be represented in the real world, so that they can design effectiveelectronic representations. Analyt ical frameworks that address the issue of relevanceare hybrid, attempting to relate ethnographic studies and methods with a morestructured analysis of interaction to inform technology design.5 .2 D i s tr i b u te d C o g n i t io n a n d C o m m o n G r o u n d : A n a l y s is o f C o o r d i n a t io n i nC o - l o ca t e d a n d M e d i a S p a c e sA framework based on distributed cognition and common ground approaches wasdeveloped for the study o f construction teams working on a large-scale project. 4Distributed cognition provided a broad theoretical framework for investigating theways shared information is represented and used by such teams. The main goal of the study was toexplore the effects of computer-based representations on the teams' ability tocoordinate their diverse perspectives on design objects and tasks.Distributed cognition framework guides the analyst in describing a functionalsystem involving individuals who coordinate their actions using shared artefacts inthe process. These are also refen'ed to as common artefacts (Robinson, 1993), boundaryobjects (Star, 1989), collective cognitive artefacts (Nardi and Miller, 1989) andcommon objects (Heath and Luff, 1991) that are used by different people in thesame place at the same time. The analysis aims to account for the contribution of theenvironment in which actions take place, on the representational media normallyembodied in shared artefacts such as documents, diagrams, charts and other commonobjects, and on the interactions between people using shared artefacts to coordinatetheir activities.

Coordination of distributed work activities is regarded as crucial for the successof the entire collaborative task. Such coordination is also central to the study ofcollaboration within CSCW where the focus is on 'how co-ordination emerges, howit is maintained and what happens when it breaks down' (Rogers, 1993: 295). Inparticular, the entire working environment is examined to find the features thatfacilitate coordination of distributed activities. In the study of construction teams,this framework was used to analyse interactions and actions that involved the use ofnetworks, intranets and multimodal communication channels. The emphasis was onthe use of shared artefacts, both in co-located and media spaces, as determined bythe characteristics of particular situations in the course of a construction project.

Construction teams working together on a shared problem face challenges at twolevels. First, the usual composition of such teams requires that participants havediverse expertise and thus their distinct contributions to the shared task have to becoordinated. Second, agile teams are created to work together on a specific projectand are dissolved when the project is finished. Thus the team members rarely knoweach other well prior to starting work on a joint task, and consequently their individualperspectives on the collaborative situation must be coordinated 'on the fly '.

In the study of coordination of work within agile teams the focus was on theeffect these two factors - diverse expertise and team agility - had on thecoordin ation of joint activities. The informants in the design team consisted ofan architect, a structural engineer and a construction manager, all postgraduatestudents designing a building. The core group was co-located, and one participantwas remote, but connected through a dedicated phone line, NetMeeting and avideo camera. Their main task was to design a building so that the designspecifications meet the requirements of all parties and reflect their respectivecontributions to design. 5

The data were obtained through observations in naturalistic settings, such asgroup meetings in design sessions, informal meetings and small group discussions.
