The media is changing at a startling rateNew ideas and technology are playing a central role in evolving Journalism faster than it ever has before.Social media is becoming increasingly important as a way of communicating with audiences. Hyperlocal media, where independent publishers target a small community of people in a geographic area, is becoming much more common.

Between them the Huffington Post and Buzzfeed write nearly 1,000 posts a day. A significant proportion of these posts are written by free contributors.

TIP 1: Who do you want to engage with?Facebook (The biggest) 1.3 billion active monthly users, who share 2.5m pieces of content every minute. Facebook Messenger has an additional 500m active monthly users.

Twitter (Young audience) - More than 300m people a month use Twitter and around 350,000 tweets are sent per minute. Half of its users sign in each day.

Instagram (Female-bias) Instagram allows stories to be told through pictures or up to 15 seconds worth of video. Has audience of around 300 million active users, which has grown rapidly. It is used by almost two-thirds of all American teenage girls.Snapchat (Ultra-young audience) - Just under half of Snapchat users in America are aged between 18-24. It tripled its number of daily video views from two billion to six billion in half a year in 2015.

Chat apps - WhatsApp Users can sign up to receive text, pictures and video messages.The app has almost one billion monthly active users.

All these platforms are free.

TIP 2: Build a community

To thrive local news organisations need to develop a community of readers.

People who will return regularly, contribute and feel valued.

This is much more work than a mass-media model but audiences have fragmented.
